Brian, thank you for this video. It was the first time I have asked myself “Why do they call them harmonic balancers!”
I have engineering background, and know what a harmonic is, so your explanation made perfect sense.
I would never have thought they would separate at the rubber/metal interface such that the timing can be off. Thanks for that lesson.
You used a metal screw device inserted into the No 1 spark plug hole, turned it till it made contact with the piston at what is supposed to be TDC, then spun the crank, I guess to find the exact point of TDC, which is important if your system might ever be off.
You weren’t all that clear about how you did that, and you didn’t say what that device was or where you got it. I would like to know those things if you don’t mind taking the time.

new harmonic balancer made my engine run smoother and it downshifts better as well

If the outer ring shifts it won't throw your timing off UNTIL you use the marks to time your engine.
