How the Sahara Desert is Turning into a Farmland Oasis - GREENING THE DESERT PROJECT

- In the African Sahel a country called Niger bordering the Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world, is stopping desertification and turning is deserts into an Oasis.
Regenerative Agriculture is leading the way with a technique called Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration or FMNR
FMNR was pioneered in the 1980s by Tony Rinaudo and Australian Agronomist who is widely known as the forest maker. The innovative technique has been adopted by local farmers through peer to peer learning making it cost effective and easy to implement. Over the last 40 years the visual results and the data have shown FMNR has been extremely successful in turning desert into farmland. It has regenerated 5 million hectors of degraded land, 200 million trees have been restored and has benefited 2.5 million people increasing house hold income by 18-24% the available arable land has doubled since the severe droughts of the 1970s and tree density has 10x since its all time low in the 1980s.
This is an extraordinary achievement considering Niger only receives on average 6.5 inches of rainfall a year and 80% of the country is considered a desert. The country has been effected by severe droughts and suffered huge land loss over the last decades and as a consequence Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world. However Niger has been turning this around, by turning its deserts into a farmland oasis through the technique of FMNR which you will learn more about in this video.

Very interesting! Since 1 third of the world is desert I think this is a great initiative and its all done naturally with regenerative agriculture unlike some other videos I've seen floating around about Saudi Arabia regreening the desert with horrible chemicals. We need more greening the desert initiatives, especially in northern Africa, the desert is advancing and needs to be stopped. So glad Tony rinaudo saw something that could be done easily and cheaply, more natural regenerative ideas is what the world needs more of!
Fresh fruits and vegetables are vital to communities to survive. This can help eliminate hunger and many sicknesses.
This isn't good. It would be much much better to either, A, conserve the forests we already have, or B, plant native tree's in area's that have been deforested. The reason why this isn't going to help against climate change is because of color reflection. Yellow-white is more reflective on the heat from sun, while green takes in more heat from the sun. If you are planting this in the desert, while you are turning carbon into oxygen, your heating up the planet more, and wasting lots of water.

I did a similar thing on a much smaller scale. More than 30 years ago we moved into a suburban house with a typical grass lawn. In spite of running the air conditioner 24 hours a day from February to October, the inside of the house was virtually unlivable. The front door on the Eastern side of the house would get so hot it would burn your hand if you touched it. I initially planted 60 hardwood trees on the property surrounding the house, and 90 Holly bushes around the perimeter of the property. The trees absorbed and blocked the direct sunlight hitting the walls and roof and the Holly bushes blocked the reflected sunlight bouncing from the lawn into the walls of the house. Now, 30+ years later, over a hundred additional trees have come up naturally, The house stays comfortable all year long and the natural wooded area surrounding the house is self maintaining. The woods require no mowing, weeding, chemicals or watering. In the mid summer months ,when there are periods of drought, the neighbors grass lawns die and turn brown while our yard is still green. Our electric bill went from almost $400.00 a month to $89.00 a month and there are no more lawn care costs.

@@fgcpeak9591 If you take the money saved from not having lawn care expenses, add the money saved from about a 75% reduction in your electric bill and put that money into a ROTH IRA,; over 30 years with compounded interest will make you fairly wealthy. In my case it paid for the initial cost of the house many times over.
We just did this to our front yard. It faces south. Saving more money to do some more next year. It will be a few years before the trees will be big enough to benefit us. With Global warming I wish everyone would plant more trees for shade. If everyone would do a little something in their own part of the world, it would greatly help the whole.

A house can be thought of as having walls and a roof. The roof receives only direct sunlight while the walls receive direct sunlight plus reflected sunlight from the lawn. That is why the shrubs and bushes were critical in reducing the heat hitting the house. I planted Buford Hollies because they did not require any human intervention to thrive.

He has not only saved land from being swallowed by the Sahara, his practices are being proved in the American Southwest desert regions which once believed cattle overgrazing was the cause of desert expansion when in fact it was the cattle footprints opening seed pods to prevent desert expansion -which he also believed until his own research proved him wrong.

This is so amazing and inspiring. 2 months ago I attended the Graziers Conference in Pennsylvania and saw a guy who was restoring the desert in Mexico by capturing rainfall and grazing cattle, and in 6 years or so, it turned from desert to prairie and the rains came more. Also there was a guy there with a company called Trees for Graziers and he was planting black locust in grazing fields and it was improving everything, and giving the cattle pods to eat in the fall after the grass stopped growing. The cattle beating their hooves and pooping and peeing does amazing things to the microbiome of the soil. The trees do other things like some shade, roots hold moisture. We just had farming wrong and this all can be corrected with education world wide. At least we can try. Traditional farming makes deserts. That's where the dust bowls came from in the US back in the day.

Rotation grazing is a good use of cattle. Otherwise, they get destructive.

Texan with no relevant knowledge, but I think the major difference between the Sahara and Australia's deserts is Aus deserts are much, much older than the Sahara. I'm not up on all the ways this makes a difference, but i would think the same techniques used in desertiying or recently desertified areas might not be as effective there and might not be a good idea.

The film is a lie. It was the idea of two different African Men who started the regreening of the deserts. They did not do it by trimming plants. They captured water and used manure to start the regreening of the desert. There are many videos giving credit to the right people and showing exactly how they did it and when it all started, and it wasn't in 1983. This the man who brought the desert back to life. Repairing environments not meant to be deserts is imperative. It’s so very important to preventing famine and the suffering it causes, including war. This is brilliant.
Greening the Sahara would be a drastic change with profound consequences globally, regardless of the precise degree of warming. Weather patterns, ocean circulation, and entire ecosystems would all be altered. The change should be seen less about a specific temperature change and more about a transformative shift in the Earth's system.

So great to see FMNR getting the publicity it deserves. Over 1.5million views! I met Tony in 1989 when I was working for USAID as Natural Resources Management Specialist in Niger and was immediately impressed by the work he was doing. He continues to promote FMNR to this day and it is really encouraging to see the worldwide spread and impact of this simple practice. The part I love the most is how the practice is passed along from farmer-to-farmer, peer-to-peer, with a minimum of costly project administration expenses, so typical of the many other well-intentioned, but less effective efforts.

Giving local people the knowledge and the means to be proactive in improving the situation for themselves and their progeny is far better than having them wait in food lines and knowing their grandchildren will do the same. Yes, it is estimated that there were 50 to 100 million people in the Americas but 90% of them got wiped out by ep!dem!cs not by the conquests of Columbus.

According to historians, the natives have been in America for almost 15000 years and it was centuries after their settlement that they spread and developed into a variety of tribes with different practices and cultures. Keeping big agro firms away is what's good for the environment because they are just about how much money they can take for their rich shareholders and are not locally connected. Local farmers working together in cooperations is the way forward.

This is an example of amazing transformation of desert land. Hats off to vision and courage of a man who put his tremendous efforts to start this project. One thing I've come to realize, living in the US, is how so much of our cities and suburbs have become Concrete Jungles. You have parking lots everywhere, streets that are multiple lanes wide, and plenty of other structures made entirely of concrete. For the spaces that aren't concrete, they are usually nothing but grass, kept only a few inches high, with no other plant species growing there. This can be especially true in suburban residential areas; as far as I know, insurance companies are happier if you have nothing but grass in your yards. Wow I am an Aussie who watches documentaries on everything especially greening the desert as Australia is mostly one big desert too, but I’ve never heard of this amazing man or the work he’s been doing in Africa! God bless him and the people of Niger as they have done so much great work in restoring their land. And yes he does deserve a Nobel prize! Australia would be even easier to restore due to the artesian bore which the Gov refuses to open up..Literally could make the desrt bloom in no time at all...Not including the massive amounts of CLOUD seeding which has taken place in east const of Australia which has flooded much land but really in the wrong areas.

I know this probably isn't the most ideal place to talk about religion but I really do want you to know that God loves you. You may not love Him or care about Him at all, but He still will continue to love you. You are a beloved son or daughter of God. He knows you personally and He truly and deeply desires for your happiness. He loves everyone who has every lived on this earth, with a perfect equal love regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, faith and values and beliefs. The Lord loves you more than you can think or comprehend. The Lord accepts those who come unto Him whether your early, late or just in time who desire to change. The Lord will accept you wholeheartedly and forgive you if you are willing to change. He will never be too busy to talk to. He will give you strength you need to overcome and conquer your temptations and will give you the strength you need to endure through your trials and afflictions. Paul said that The Lord will not give you temptations that you cannot resist, but that in your temptations, He will provide a way for you to resist, overcome and conquer them. He will provide a way. He wants to bless you and reward you abundantly in Spiritual and physical things. The Lord knows you and will not forget you. You are loved. You are utterly amazing. You have incredible potential. You are not forgotten or ever will be forgotten or forsaken. You are special. You are unique. You really are one of a kind. You have been reserved for this time and The Lord needs you on His side.
It just simply would not be the same without you. That is just how much the Lord need you on His side.

Worth mentioning that the degradation referenced, here, stems from a 1970's decision by the World Bank, telling countries of the Sahel to convert their prime agricultural land to cotton production to finance their debts. Food production then moved onto unsuitable soils, pushing pastoralists even further afield. Voila, soil degradation, forest destruction and desertification, all of which produced the regional famines of the mid- and late-70's.

This is a good point. History has taught us that cotton production is very taxing on the soil. Look at Georgia in the USA. After a little over a century of large scale cotton production in soil that was ideal for it to begin with it got to the point where crops were failing all the time. Although Dr. Carver was able to turn it around there, cotton farmers there did have to adopt Dr. Carver's methods to really change things at the time.
@@davidtherwhanger6795 - a century ago a lot of USA farmers were growing hemp. The first Levi jeans were made of hemp. The CABAL couldn't make their zillions via hemp so a STATUTE was passed banning hemp. The farmers didn't realise the hemp was what the bar stewards called marijuana. But you probably know this. But the point I wanted to make was that hemp didn't exhaust the soil like cotton.

As a Conservation Planner, I find this to be a very positive and unique approach. Even the US could and should adopt some of these measures. Instead farmers think that they have to farm edge of field to the other edge of field and not allowing any kind of buffer or fish/wildlife cover & habitat. Makes me mad

I live in Alaska. Which strange enough, much of it is in fact is classified as a desert. There's not a lot of precipitation. What we do get tends to stays.
Tending to our enviroment and stewarding our wilderness is part of being an Alaskan. These are principles I grew up with. My dad just called it good stewardship. I don't think it should be relegated to people living in remote and diverse environments. Help the world you live in grow. Be part of the world where ever you are. It changes you.
