Keep in mind that Neville was born in the first half of the previous century and died in 1967. “Man” is a traditional reference to mankind. Meaning all people. Also the pronoun “he” is generic, not gender biased. If Neville was around physically today, he would probably say it as “Humanity” or “Humankind.” And “he” would be replaced by “they.” Consciousness, which was Neville’s underlying subject, has no gender.
