Facts, reminds me of an native American version of ghost rider from a comic I saw once. It made the pre-existing character unique, made sense with the lore, and added a different perspective. That's what these characters should be about. Adding things of value, not just adding for the sake of looking "Cool".
Same with the Crow as well. Multiple people came back from the dead but had different back stories. For example, Iris Shaw was a pregnant female cop who was murdered but she didn't go on a killing spree like Eric when she became the Crow, and stayed true to who she was. Like you said, adding to the lore. I don't know why these people take things like this away.
Making Aqualad black in young justice is one of my favorite race swaps (granted it was a completely separate character from OG Aqualad but let's be honest Kal is way cooler then Garth) He was strong, he was natural born leader the other characters good look up too, had cooler powers then Aquaman (electricity and water constructs hell yeaaaah!) and to top it all off, he was the son of pre existing villain, Black Manta! Which adds stuff to the lore and what not. Aqualad was so damn cool in that show. Also getting to become Aquaman in season 3 But him being black wasn't an aspect of his personality. It was just a design choice for the best version of that character.
I didn't care because kid sidekicks as a whole is fucking dumb idea. Always hated them, the worst part in any Batman story used to be fucking Robin, now it's race swapped lesbians drinking coffee and talking about feelings.
Kinda similar but Marlon Wayans was cast as Robin in a 2 picture deal for Batman Returns and Batman Forever but ended up getting cut from returns bc there were too many characters and then 3 was directed by Schumacher(instead of Burton) who decided to recast Robin.
@@DemigahI mean given that there are already multiple versions of Superman being white, a slight race swap wouldn't be a big deal imo. Especially for live action where the goal should be to hire qualified actors regardless of their race, geherally speaking. Like I'd love to see how Denzel Washington would play the Joker because he's one of my favorite actors.
The issue I have with race swapping establish characters is because they never give black characters who are originally black or any other race in the comics a chance and they take the easy way out by race or gender swapping them
Nah fax and it feels wierd and outra place like they tryna reinvent the charsceter or something and its usually minor heroes thay dont have that much history or coverage that get raceswapped
And how do you suggest that these new characters grow, get popularised in the modern day and get more adaptions along the way without it being blatantly thrown in out=r faces? Sounds aggressive, but it is a genuine question.
@@Demigah 1. Wdym by "blatantly thrown in out=r faces"? I don't understand. 2. Just make good character development, advertise the characters, and you will see a growth in popularity.
@@Demigah the same way the popular heroes did it. By having compelling stories and good characterisation. After all, the established heroes have had decades to build their popularity because of the writers behind them. All a new character needs is a writer who actually gives a dam about making them the best they can be and giving them good stories to feature in.
@@ultradeathboy not hard to make people forget when he wasn't really remembered in the first place. He was always kind of insignificant until the last two decades
@@Demigah Yes… that was in the Ultimate comics. They wanted the Nick Fury of that reality to look like Samuel L Jackson, so they invented a character who is the son of the original Nick Fury, Nicholas Joseph "Nick" Fury Jr and I think, *I THINK* that a deal was made with the actor but I don't know if it's real or is just a rumor. Technically they are adapting that version of the character although the JR part is not mentioned and his father is Jack Fury and not the original Nick Fury, possibly they did it to simplify the family tree and not confuse casual fans.
About Nick Fury being black, he wasn't based on the white Nick Fury. He was based on the Ultimate Nick Fury in the Ultimate universe who the MCU looks identical to. There's also another comic showing that Black Nick Fury is the son of the white Nick Fury.
I am split on race swap. I hate it when a preexisting character is changed but I have zero problems if it’s a new universe and the character is different in that as that makes a lot more sense.
Ur Val Zod point is huge. U rlly put that into words well. Superman is the hero for everyone. And honestly I think alot of ppl hate on Superman growing up but once we get older we realize why he is such a great character. He’s the most human of all the heroes and he’s an alien with immeasurable strength.
It's because Jackson is incredibly charismatic during a time when Marvel was being a major hit with audiences that had no idea what Marvel even was beforehand
I don’t see Red hood being black. At least not the Pattinson-verse. I could see him in the DCU though. The reason why I feel like him being white is better is because he’s was designed to look like one to one Bruce Wayne except the fact that he went down the opposite path. The Pinnacle of Batman who kills. He in fact resembles Bruce Wayne’s face the most out of the whole family aside Damien Wayne.
@@Demigah according to Matt Reeves, his plan is to work on the Nightwing storyline right now. and way back when the Batman first released, Matt Reeves was talking about having the ambition of doing the whole batfamily saga for Pattinson. However, he never discussed further about what members of the bat family to be included
Don’t want Red Hood to be black. Here’s a bright idea. How about we make Mr Terrific, Cyborg, Vixen, Black Lightning, Static Shockajd the many other amazing DC characters and make them awesome and mainstream? Of better yet, make a new original character and make them as compelling as Red Hood? Hunh?
It's hard when nowadays they make new black characters for the purpose of them being a hero for minorities. I don't want a black Jason Todd, I want a Jason Todd that just happens to be black
@@Demigah it became hard because of the recent forced diversity and aggressive pandering alongside predictable and drab storytelling that has turned off the audience. But I really believe that if they try it once with an original black character and if the story is great, people will sing it’s praises. Black people and people of other races. I’ve seen it before.
@@DemigahStan Lee made a black batman in the past who outfit looks like man bat and he made him black not for a race swap he just thought it would be interesting and it was a rags to riches thing and if I remember correctly he was a boxer before hero DC labeled him and the others Stan created as from earth 6
Too be fair to Brother Voodoo, he was a character on his own. He just happened to become sorcerer supreme at one point and time like other characters in Marvel.
Race swapping in media can be pretty ridiculous, especially when it feels like it's being done just to push a certain agenda. It's one thing for fans to have their own interpretations of characters, but when it's forced on you, it's just cringeworthy. And when they start race swapping real historical figures, that's a whole other level of absurdity. Just imagine being remembered for something important even after 100's of years, only to have your legacy overshadowed by a completely different version of yourself made by some hate all men karen.
At first I was like "Black Jason... Alright that's a little hard to imagine." but as Demigah went on I was like "Ok I'm starting to see it. That makes a lot of sense, I can see that being pretty cool if they did something like. Red Hood with waves and scars. Or something like that."
Bro that fucked up joke of Tim Fox was hilarious, you'd make a great writer on the boys 😂😂 this is Kripke levels of social commentary and im here for it.
Why I hate race swaps is because not only it is lazy, it's racist because they only see legitimatcy in classic white characters (youngrippa59) and every time they create a "new" character and it's terrible they fall on racism
I don't think the way to go is making a BUNCH of black heroes, cuz what's the difference from having a bunch of white ones? We KNOW why you made 'em all black, it's goofy.
@@DemigahThe answer should be to give already established black characters better stories and more prominence. But race swapping gets more attention apparently so that’s what we get.
As a white guy, I am all for a black Jason Todd, and I agree that it could work way better than him being white. And to be honest, I don't mind if any character has their skin color changed as long as their purpose and personality aren't affected by it. I love characters for who they are, not for what race they are portrayed as. But I absolutely hate when characters are changed to minorities in the name of diversity when the only real reason is to get appeal and hopefully make more money (which never works, idk how they haven't learned their lesson) Your examples comparing the likes of Nick Fury to Deadshot and Velma are perfect. We want our heroes to be real people, not political statements.
John Stewart is so fucking cool. So glad he’s coming with James Gunn DCU. I’m gonna need him to get Static on the phone immediately tho, he needs to be here. Also as a white guy, black Red Hood sounds awesome. Being honest though, most race swaps are just downright lazy and are given to characters who absolutely don’t need to be.
Speaking of Black Red Hood, that reminds me of John Boyega saying he wanted to play Red Hood in a live action film, I think he could pull it off very well
Dick Grayson, Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom are Romani, but they are still depicted white Duke Thomas, Firestorm, John Stuart, and Batwing exist, but DC doesn't want to use them that much Thalia and her father are Middle Easterners are depicted white, but it depends which region in Middle East so I don't know.
That's a view point i also share, i dont really care about race swap as long as they don't: A) Change the character completely into something they're not or B) Make their skin color their *entire personality.* And unfortunately most change of the color palette is usually one of these two things which is why i like if not love characters like Miles Morales and Val Zod whilst also not liking what they do with characters like Velma for example
I just want it to be authentic. No DEI or companies using race as a shield for criticism. A character being developed. A character we can see as a person and not just companies pulling something.
The problems are 1: The people being *racial swapped are rarely ever simply that, they're often also given a trait or more normally associated with the racial ethnicity they've been changed to. 2: Only probably 40%, at most, still look like the character but with a different racial ethnicity. Like Hugo in Gotham, Wilson in Ben Affleck's Daredevil and actually Johnny in Fant4stic. And 3: The people behind the *Racial swapping sometimes do it with the wrong character. Like look at 2015's Fant4stic movie, it would have made more sense to turn Ben black instead of Johnny due to the fact that he's got Hood Life, had a rough life growing up and is already the token minority of Fantastic Four in general with him being Jewish (Cuz for some reason now, that's been legally turned into some kind of racial ethnicity instead of just a religion)
Only problem is id be expecting jason to make a comment about someone's aunty or instead of guns just roast them to all hell with the african accent🤣 Now that i think about it itd make the show 10/10 automatically
One of my problems with race swapping nowadays is that often times they alter the characters personality as well or not bother writing a character for them because they think it would appeal to those who want more representation, with one of the worst examples being that shitshow called "Velma"
to a certain extent, i kind of hate creative liberty haha these stories like the hbo harley quinn show. DON'T change the characters, just give us more of what we already love
Mans has some good points. I feel like Red Hood will show up in live action next in the DCU, just because it's already an established universe. But I could definitely see you voicing him in animation at some point.
Same here. I'm African-American and I'm sick to death of all the race swapping. At first I found it amusing and flattering but once they started doing it too much to other characters then I started getting annoyed and insulted. Example Jimmy oslen a red head white guy in the comics and in Superman TAS. Now they flipped him from white to black. All in the name of useless diversity
That Jason Todd idea is actually really good. But yeah typically I don't care about race or gender swapping (I used to but nowadays I don't care as long as it's done right) but typically it's done to shield from criticism. Like Rey is basically gender swapped Luke Skywalker in all but name and is written incredibly poorly. But instead of acknowledging it, Disney just writes fans off as "woman haters"
I'm always the fan of making the Robins more unique in design. They can do it the way, they originaly did. Have Jason Todd as a ginger (which is, tbh more tragic. Like, imagine being born without a soul) and dye his hair black, to look more like Dick. But after time, he wants to be his own person. This cluld be in his late Robin or Red Hood time. A black Jason could be sick. Like imagine Red Hood in his murder time, with a dark, menacing Keith David like voice, like I think you can pull off. What I also like is giving Tim longer hair, like shoulder long. Would fit his "tired, more introverted and smart kid" type. In contrast to that, Damien shorter hair, to show he's more of a soldier.
All I wanted to say is that I have never had any problem with relating to fictinal character just bcs they don't look like me. Idk if anyone could have this problem...
Only these narcistic activist hacks need to see "themselves presented", by their logic, as a white man I shouldn't love Snipes' Blade or any Denzel Washington role but if I say I don't like or care they gonna say that I'm a razzzist which is just fuxking funny. Same with women.
I agree with this. Every point made Just dont agree that characters like miles morales, or Falcon captain America, are considered to raceswaps. They are "side kicks" who take on the name after the main They are they're own characters entirely Its not the same as like wallace west or how every redhead is turning black in DC *cough* jimmy olson * cough*
2:54-2:56 Well it's not, because Jason Todd's troubled childhood is not exclusive to us black folks. I grew up in mixed low income neighborhoods, and I knew many white kids who came from broken homes. I knew white kids who could probably steal the hub caps off a car to get some cash, if they haven't already. Although in the end this validates what you said earlier in the video about his race being the sole aspect of his character. Because Jason's backstory could happen to anybody. So writers doing it for DEI reasons would be stupid.
The main issue with RS is that a lot of the times, its pointless. They tend to choose ginger characters to be black and what started as a coincidence is now a pattern. Personally I'd love to see more inclusion of established/new black characters like they did with Bloodsport in the new Suicide Squad. Duke Thomas is also a good character to look more into as he's one of the memebers of the bat family. Making Jason black is a risky concept, not many writers would know how to go about portarying the character correctly as DC has shown they have no idea what to do with Jason anyway. Its a good idea I'd personally would love to see fleshed out, but I doubt we'll see it anytime soon.
I know I'm a bit late to comics and superheroes as a whole - hell, my first superhero movie was the 2012 Avengers movie (damn was it good) and I didn't really get into superheroes until 2016/2017. But for me, my one big issue with race swapping is that I want to see an as comic accurate portrayal as possible. That means, how the character looked in the comics should be as similar, if not on point to the actor in live action. It's not that some actors can't pull off some characters (Nick Fury played by Sam Jackson is the only Nick Fury I know, Will Smith playing Deadshot was just cool - he made that movie for me and even Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam had its moments too), but unless the actor is that good and the potential is there, it's always a struggle for me personally to accept, especially when there are some darker skinned heroes who absolutely should take a greater center stage - like Static Shock, John Stewart's Green Lantern, Luke Cage just to name a few examples. I'd even go as far to say new original heroes could be created, because while the classics are always classic, there's nothing wrong with throwing something new into the mix just to spice it up. That's just my opinion I wanted to share. Love your take as always, Demigah.
the issue though is why take an existing IP and outright race swap the main character? why not create something new? or take the OG IP and create a story line that leads to the a new character taking their place and then they can be of new race. but just outright switching the character and saying deal with it is wrong.
I remember when race swapping bit someone in the cheeks A twitter user race swap a character in the manga (or adult manga, i dont remember which), saying that representation matters... the person was had a response from someone who said "Congratulations! You made a sex slave black!" What we learn children? Dont race swap a character unless you have a good reason
I remember hearing about that it was the funniest thing because the person was so proud of themselves for doing this and someone had to quickly remind what they doing is not it.😂
I mostly hate that a lot of race swaps take the place of already existing black characters We got so much more to offer than electricity but they don’t have a big name to them and writers don’t feel like building a big name And it’s hard to push for the og black characters cause weirdos will scream woke over anything with melanin on it 💀
What we need isn't some black revolution, they just need to start small. Involve static, Green Lantern Jon Stewart ETC in more projects to do with bigger heroes, then let them get a comic based on the events that transpired with them. With good writers and a heavy storyline, the characters will popularise themselves
I hate those tiktok mfs that scream woke whenever someone who isnt white or straight is on scene, once it doesn't affect the story its fine, atp the word woke is only used as an excuse for them to be freely racist

My thing is why do you have to change characters that are white for no reason instead of actually using characters of that race and making a good movie,tv show or game about them. Making them popular and well liked.
Ion gon lie jason has the black part already played out His dad left moms dead he was a criminal when he was young all u need is some dark skin and for him to be called JT short for Jason todd
You already have tons of people that think batman is the poster boy for white privelege, so if you make Jason Todd black, you'd also have to deal with those people calling his storyline racist because Bruce would be his "white savior".
Spin the narrative in a way where it doesn't make him adopting a black kid seem like he did it for such reason. A child is a child. I doubt he'd be thinking about a child's colour when they need saving
@@Demigah Yeah, they could simply maintain the story exactly as it is, changing only the color of his skin. I don't know why the guys at Disney never thought of doing that to their race swapped characters.
The Milestone universe is LOOOOONG overdue for any sort of mainstream recognition. We need Static, Icon, and the rest of the crew on the big screen. So many original Black American IPs get swept under the rug for crazy reasons.
Ngl I don't mind race swapping for certain characters but I hate making characters LGBT when they never have been before for not even a good story or no story at all they just wanna make them LGBT for the sake of it instead of using actual gay characters😂😂💯💯
@@Demigah there are so many lgbt characters already that are cool they don't need to turn characters into that for no reason especially when it made the character have a worse story. DC has done this to big heros
I think people will complain if Jason Todd was black. He has the toughest backstory, rocky relationship with Bruce, died horribly and by popular vote and a killer. People will think they wrote him like that because of prejudice. I’m all for it, but you know how people are.
I always hated the implication that a non-white character had to be carried by the legacy of an existing and beloved character. Everyone is too scared and insecure to try to stand on their own.
When u were talking about superman I completely related to that. Only in the last two years have I learned to love characters who r symbols of kindness and that we need someone that kindness in the real world.
We need ORIGINAL black heroes, why change falcon into captain America, he is THE FALCON. Also Bucky was the one who should have been the new cap. They should focus on Spawn, Static shock and even Batwing

He was strong, he was natural born leader the other characters good look up too, had cooler powers then Aquaman (electricity and water constructs hell yeaaaah!) and to top it all off, he was the son of pre existing villain, Black Manta! Which adds stuff to the lore and what not.
Aqualad was so damn cool in that show. Also getting to become Aquaman in season 3
But him being black wasn't an aspect of his personality. It was just a design choice for the best version of that character.
I didn't care because kid sidekicks as a whole is fucking dumb idea. Always hated them, the worst part in any Batman story used to be fucking Robin, now it's race swapped lesbians drinking coffee and talking about feelings.
While I agree with you on the idea of Jason, I still rock with white Fury.
That man was a menace in the comics, even whipped a congressman.

That Nick Fury is based on Nick Fury Jr from the ultimate comics, which is the son of the original Nick Fury, technically it is not a raceswap.
But black NF was created with Sam Jackson in mind
@@Demigah Yes… that was in the Ultimate comics.
They wanted the Nick Fury of that reality to look like Samuel L Jackson, so they invented a character who is the son of the original Nick Fury, Nicholas Joseph "Nick" Fury Jr and I think, *I THINK* that a deal was made with the actor but I don't know if it's real or is just a rumor.
Technically they are adapting that version of the character although the JR part is not mentioned and his father is Jack Fury and not the original Nick Fury, possibly they did it to simplify the family tree and not confuse casual fans.

The Pinnacle of Batman who kills. He in fact resembles Bruce Wayne’s face the most out of the whole family aside Damien Wayne.

Don’t want Red Hood to be black. Here’s a bright idea.
We already had a black Superman character his name is Icon and his sidekicks name is Rocket they're both from Dakota like Static shock
Well at least they are different persons
Id rather have our own characters our own franchises. Race swapping characters is usually a scapegoat to mask past racism with these franchises

Bro, I'd love to be a part of that show in any way
The issue is each Robin has to look like the last one, to confuse others to think there's only one Robin, instead of having spares.
@@ceaser2124 That's a good point. Duke Thomas, for example, deserves more time in the spotlight.
Race swapping already well established characters is the definition of "Stop touching shit!"
As a white guy, I am all for a black Jason Todd, and I agree that it could work way better than him being white. And to be honest, I don't mind if any character has their skin color changed as long as their purpose and personality aren't affected by it. I love characters for who they are, not for what race they are portrayed as. But I absolutely hate when characters are changed to minorities in the name of diversity when the only real reason is to get appeal and hopefully make more money (which never works, idk how they haven't learned their lesson)
Your examples comparing the likes of Nick Fury to Deadshot and Velma are perfect.
Speaking of Black Red Hood, that reminds me of John Boyega saying he wanted to play Red Hood in a live action film, I think he could pull it off very well
I remember that!
My Main Problem is when it's Done to Check a Box
Dick Grayson, Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom are Romani, but they are still depicted white
Duke Thomas, Firestorm, John Stuart, and Batwing exist, but DC doesn't want to use them that much
Thalia and her father are Middle Easterners are depicted white, but it depends which region in Middle East so I don't know.
I personally think that the people of dc and marvel should just make more characters of difference races instead of race swapping in my opinion

Same. It's not about relating to them, I just think it would work in some cases
Every point made
Just dont agree that characters like miles morales, or Falcon captain America, are considered to raceswaps.
They are "side kicks" who take on the name after the main
They are they're own characters entirely
Its not the same as like wallace west or how every redhead is turning black in DC *cough* jimmy olson * cough*
2:54-2:56
Well it's not, because Jason Todd's troubled childhood is not exclusive to us black folks.
I know it's not exclusive, I don't think any lifestyle fully is, but I'm saying if he was black, it would work
Nah I would have to disagree with you on that and I'm black and wanted Jason todd to be black is kinda cringe
