Three things.
First the E doesn't stand for equality, it stands for Equity. It's not about equality, it's about "getting even".
Second, these people screaming "representation matters" don't actually care about YOUR representation, or mine, but theirs. And that is what we are seeing in... honestly in most western media these days. Do you remember when John Luigezamo was asked about his thoughts on the Mario movie and he whined about a lack of Latino representation in a movie about Italians in a magic world? And the truth is, there prolly are a lot of queer and progressive people in creative fields such as gaming.
Another thing is that for as much as the DEI crowd say they care about diversity, notice how the attempts to slander media from actual diverse locations. See the recent examples of Stellar Blade and Black Myth Wukong. It reminds me when western creators tried to paint Japanese anime and games as inferior, strange and perverse. Because if media effects culture, they don;t want anyone else to dictate culture.

Don't have them shove it in your face, don't have that be their only real trait, just let them be their own people, with the color of their skin as a sort of backdrop. You get what I mean.

It feels very patronizing honestly, these companies/developers are like “hey person of X identity group, we put a terrible caricature of you in our game/product, buy it now okay?
Kinda like how hundreds of thousands of pieces of mainstream media have done the exact same thing to appeal to white people for the past century?

And the craziest thing is that the majority of LGBT people aren’t even fond of the way games are handling gay characters-it’s so frustrating to see them make characters so unlikable when they’re trying to cater to a small demographic. Why can’t they just make a character like able. If they’re gay, they can be gay but at the very least make them likable and a normal character!

Not with everyone "queerifying" everything . One Piece is an example of ACTUAL representation of many different cultures and lifestyles and yet the mob still gets upset 💀
There's gotta be a reason in the background of it all that we don't fully understand. Ain't no way so many companies are purposefully losing money like this if there's no alternate incentive. Unfortunately it's at our expense, clearly we don't matter on the large scale.

In Sektor's case, I disagree. Except for the Sub-Zero romanic interest, every Story thing you could give to OG Sektor, everything went to Sub-Zero already. Grandmaster by nepotism? Sub-Zero got that. Idea to come up with Cybers? Sub-Zero had that.
Tbh, it's mostly inconsequential for Cyrax. It's Sektor that has to deal with the blows due to having to share aspects with Bi-Han conceptually

I think it's a big problem that a bunch of my friends who are of the LGBTQ+ are talking about how they don't like what the gaming industry is doing about it
If that is the case, not just for your friends but for other people of that community, then what's even the point of this type of treatment? Like, are these businesses allergic to respect, logic, and money? The point of a business is TO MAKE MONEY, yet every time they do this pandering, they LOSE money. At this point, it is clear as day that not only are they greedy because they use pandering to attempt to make money, but they are also stupid as a bag of bricks for not realizing it doesn't work. The cherry on top is that they disrespect that community by representing them as obnoxious to no end.

I just want to clarify, DEI doesn't mean diversity, equity and inclusion they are just the words that make up the acronym, DEI is actually forced inclusion through the moral disguise of equity with the end goal of complete diversification. In videogames and entertainment honestly it's whatever, the consumers of the market will eventually show the developers of the market that pandering to 3% at the expense of their primary player base is not a profitable business venture. The real issue takes hold when DEI affects things that actually hurt individuals such as employment...at that point no matter how they want to justify the discrimination it is simply unjustifiable.
At the end of the day, diversification of people requires the same terrible behaviors associated with purification of people.
Seeing as how Ubisoft, is now making a custom "mentorship program" for game development for women and non binary people specifically and not men just proves your point. this gives these groups of people a head start in comparison to what men get, this is in no way or form equality it is literally like you said complete diversification. The thing is this will lead to people who are not passionate about gaming to get into the field, like most women and non binary people may see this as just a job opportunity not as a thing to do out of passion.

I think Apex is a bad example. Sure they spinning a sexuality wheel for each character but it doesn't force itself into the lore to where it ruins it or anything. Like the only important lore point that involves character sexuality is Loba and Valkyrie's relationship.

To me games like overwatch 2 and Tekken and street fighter 6 does diversity right. Have characters around the world, they arent ugly and they don't make it a big deal what their sexuality or color are. And this is a huge shock for overwatch 2 since many western studios do a terrible job at it. Super RARE blizzard W. Im a Christian and tracer who is a lesbian is my 2nd favorite character. Thats how good they did with it
Mass Effect is another series I think actually handles this real well.
We have an openly bisexual race (the asari; which includes Liara and Samara), there’s also LGBTQ+ characters like Kelly Chambers or Steve Cortez.

I don’t understand, is there something innately “off” or “forced” about not having white or straight characters? Are we considering being “white” in a video game to be the norm when it’s not even that it is, but that the “norm” doesn’t exist to begin with? Maybe your mind is misguided but not a single character in Overwatch mentions their “race,” only their nationality and the entire preface of the game is about a global team of superheroes. The game isn’t trying to be “diverse,” that’s just how the game is literally founder on. And for Tekken it’s the same thing; why are non-white characters considered “diverse” when characters can just be made because game devs want to make certain characters? You’re trying to force this message, that non-white people and queer people are the “others” in gaming when the entire point of gaming is to avoid all of that. Characters are just that- characters; stop interjecting your own identity politics into the sphere.

Honestly didn't realize Judy was gay until AFTER she got in my pants. Sera from Dragon Age Inquisition, same story. Yet during the R6 crossover for Ghost Recon Wildlands I figured out immediate Frost and Cav was a couple while my straight friend had it fly over his head.

Ok fair enough, you made solid arguments but i feel like the conversation around DEI and "woke" stuff in media has overshadowed talking about the actual game, the gameplay, level design, art style, narrative. It is a constant culture war that has gotten very tiring and very toxic. Like, a character being gay doesn't affect the quality so why are people so obssesed with that nowadays?

Probably the same reason people didn't like the last of us 2. Because the characters were written bad. See it's one thing to have a minor character with bad writing, it's easy to look past. When that person is someone like Abby, who is a character you play for half the game, then it becomes hard to ignore and sours the story the game is trying to tell. That's just my two cents though.

What is worse is that these same characters are sometimes modeled off of beautiful women, they make the character look ugly. I know some people want characters to relate to, but games are about escapism, having fun and playing as good-looking men and women. It is more about self-inserting if you see what the women making these games look like.

I'm genuinely confused as to why would someone gets so fired up for something as trivial as a video game having many lgbt characters. Like is the forced inclusion pointless? Yes. But does it matter or affect the players in any way, shape, or form? No. You can argue all day how most people would prefer hot people in games, to which I can understand, but what's so inherently wrong with having those gay people in games. Don't play them if you don't like them, they didn't add them for you.

Mileena and Tanya being queer was something that was established years ago since MK X. They were already a thing by then. It wasn’t something that came out of nowhere in MK 1

They race swapped deadshot because of the movies most people did not know who the suicide squad were before that movie and I refuse to argue that so most people are accustomed to seeing him as a black guy this very thing happened to the guardians of the galaxy they look and act completely different to any version pre mcu so deadshot being black has less to do with DEI and more the fact most people only saw the movie and in that he was black and to avoid confusion
