The fandom takes self-love a little too literally for this show... (That is- Steven x Pink Steven is way more popular of a ship than I, personally, think it should be considering the whole point of "Change Your Mind" was to say that Steven. Is. One. Person. He is not a human. He is not a gem. Like Garnet says. "Your soulmate is your compliment. Not your missing piece." The Steven and Pink Steven ship goes against that considering that they are literally each other's missing pieces because they're the same entity and person. But anyways, rant over. Lol.)

That 1st episode made me realize why no one ever connected that rose was pink. She didn't have healing powers until she learned how to be a better person just like how the other diamonds didn't get their level to powers until they learned how to be better. Pink didn't have those powers at all before then she only had the power to shatter and break things and the inversion of that was to heal.

Also explains why Stevens powers kinda worke in "reverse" from the moment one where Jasper confronts him in the begining of future.
Steven goes from passiv to agressiv with his powers. Pretty much the oposite of Pinks power development.
Steven thinks of himselfe as bad, useless, not needed, so his powers turned "bad" too.
Oh my God I was wondering why they never connected that and Yes your so right. That makes all the diamonds new powers make sense.

I totally agree that Everything’s Fine was hard to watch. It was lowkey more disturbing than I Am My Monster. The confrontation scene at the end was honestly the most tense scene in the show. Zach’s voice acting also made the episode that much better, he did great. I was honestly disturbed at the beginning when he shattered the window by saying “I’m FINE!” Wow, what an episode.
Also the music in I Am My Monster POPPED OFF. The piano when alexandrite formed was so sick.
Zach's an amazing actor, and I hope he goes on to have a fantastic career.

Also, when he said, "find something better to do with your life..." I felt bad for Jasper.
"Steven, you never gave up on me for some reason I don't understand."
Damn. This hurt. I mean this whole finale hurt, but that hit me in a way I wasn't expecting. Hearing that, I had this realization that Peridot is still not over her past. She still sees her old self as irredeemable. Even after all her growth, she still can't look back at that version of herself and be ok with who she was. She can still look back and wonder what he saw in her to make him not give up, despite now BEING the thing he saw in her. Peridot, for all her snarkiness, still has some self worth issues, which pinged my own and then the tears just started streaming. And the way they bookended her story was perfect- "Be the Steven you want to see in the world."
She's already shown that she can help people look past their past and towards a better version of themselves with Lapis, so, even if she cant understand what Steven saw in her, she understands the chance that he gave her. That was freaking beautiful to see.

I honestly don't have any complaints about how they handled the finale with steven's leaving. I think for the writers to write a definite future for Steven would be a disservice to the show and the message it was pushing. Steven can now do anything he wants, and imo for the writers to write steven's future FOR him in a way takes away HIS choice. What goes on in steven's life from here on out is completely up to him, even if we don't get to see it. As much as i would like to see steven's adventures in all 39 states, I'm ok with leaving it up to imagination. Personally I think his time away from beach city would just amount to doing the normal everyday human things he never really got to experience, as well as just plain going to tourist traps like their version of NY's statue of liberty or the Bean in Chicago. But that's one of many futures Steven has ahead of him and that's ok. Whatever it is, I'm sure Steven Universe's Future has great things ahead of him :)

Silly question, but you know Steven's not real, right? He doesn't have a choice to begin with. What you describe here is literally what the writers did for every single aspect of him. It wouldn't be any different to writing the rest of the show.
I get what point you're going for, but the phrasing is kinda nonsensical and silly. Kinda makes it sound like you're a little TOO attached to what, at the end of the day, is still a fictional character who does not exist in any capacity outside the show, even if we all have real feelings for him. It's not like he's out there living his life somewhere, as nice as it is to feel like that's what's happening - his life effectively ENDS when people stop writing him.
Connie has been my favorite character since bubble buddies and MY GOSH. SHE IS A GOD. I love how SHE was the one to be the most concern about him and was taking action. My gosh I freaking love her so much
She's consistently been the most reasonable person the entire series.

I feel like with Connie, she was pretty selfish earlier in the series as she would put her own needs and wants above those of steven, so her realization of this fact contributed even more to what she had to say at the end because it applied to everyone, her included.

The most important detail in I Am My Monster is that it’s Steven’s tears which heal his corruption. He was shown that he had all that support from all these people who love him, but what that really did was ALLOW Steven to take the first step to healing himself.

I started to cry when you started crying. When the cookie cat song came on, I remembered myself singing the song as a 12 year old whenever the episode came on tv. And then the Being Human song came on and I BAWLED. OMG. my brother kept asking me " why are you crying ?" I couldn't even answer. It was just beautiful.
Also the Steven and Connie kiss AHHHHHH IVE BEEN WAITING SINCE 2013 OR WHENEVER BUBBLE BUDDIES CAME OUT FOR THAT
The thing that made me cry is when Steven started crying into lions mane. I broke down right then and there. I couldn't stop, also when the end credits started I was crying so much. Im still crying, this show was so amazing.

The sound of Steven's crying hurt me so much. Just that uncontrollable sobbing! I cant.

"If every porkchop was perfect, we wouldn't have hotdogs" was all I thought about when you mentioned the odd cookie cat representing that life doesn't go to plan
when spinel and white started arguing about "no it's my fault" then I stopped crying my eyes out and was like "bruh, steven's a monster and you're arguing about who's fault it is"
Honestly I hated that episode. It genuinely made me happy that the show was ending.
This entire season was filled with Steven being a jerk.
1.) He tried connecting with Jasper because he couldn't accept there was someone not grateful for his actions.
2.)He took over Amethyt's job placement program, thinking he could a better job than her (he couldnt).
3.) He wanted to help Volleyball, not for her sake, but for the sake of undoing what his mother did.
4.) He wrapped himself up in working at Little Home School so he wouldn't have to deal with the other gems.
5.) His botany hobby turned out to be him spewing out all his resentments of the other Crystal Gems.
6.) He tried holding his Beach City Buddies hostage to keep everything how he wanted it.
7.) He kept pushing Connie to skate with her friends, despite her wanting to be with him. Then sat and felt sorry for himself.
8.) He proposed to Connie. In what felt like a desperate attempt at leaching off her dreams.
9.) He ignored Greg trying to tell him how miserable his childhood was. Instead looking at him like a fool.
10.) He constantly brushed off everyone's inquiries if he was okay.
11.) When Jasper encouraged him to embrace his power, he used it to shatter her. No, he didn't mean to do that. But he did mean to hurt her.
12.) When he went to the Diamonds for advise. And to be honest, their advise wasn't bad. Yellow can heal physical issues. Blue can put you at peace. Taking away your anxiety, so you can talk about your problems more clearly. And White can help you face your inner thoughts. But Steven doesn't use White's powers like they were meant to be. He decides to be petty, and try to smash her gem. And for those who say "Yeah, but that's because she removed his gem", remember she honestly thought her sister Pink was hiding in the gem.
11.) He returns to Earth, and goes into one of the most disturbing denial benders I have ever seen.
And when it all came to a head, and Steven transformed (and yes, apparently he was doing that to himself), how does everybody react? "It's all our fault!" " We knew something was bothering him. But he kept pushing us away. " (honestly, how is that one their fault?) "We should have devoted ourselves to Steven's wants and needs". Okay, maybe not that extreme. But that was the atmosphere everyone was giving off. And did anyone else notice they all turned into a bunch of sobbing sallies, after getting hit by that pink energy wave that Steven gave off when he stomped his foot? Was he influencing that somehow? Connie was the only one saying "Never mind the blame. Just help him".
Also, anyone else notice they never did resolve what was causing this? They couldnt. To do that, they'd have to acknowledge that he was doing it to himself.
Altogether, a most cringe-worthy example of wokeness.
@@ericbrower611 It's totally fine you didn't like the episode or even the overall season, but the points you made aren't exactly faults against the writing. The intention was for Steven to not be making good decisions and acting irrationally the whole time. He was going on a downward spiral because he didn't know how to cope with his own traumas and figure out what to do with his life. He absolutely did things the audience was not supposed to agree with. It's also true the diamonds, the gems, and even Connie at points didn't figure out what to do until the very end. I think it played well to White Diamond's character that she would make Steven's breakdown about herself.
I don't think this was an example of wokeness, just about how damaging it can be to ignore problems you're facing and not reach out for help. Anyways that was just my take. I don't think the ending was 100% perfect, but I don't think it was bad either.
@@ericbrower611 Steven has always been the selfless type of person(if you noticed). He wasn't really a jerk, just a person going through trauma, anxiety and depression.
1) He was scared that everyone he helped and loved grew up without him.
2) He is thinking irrationally in the series because he didn't have a clear mind.
3) He didn't grow up in a normal lifestyle (Go to school, Doctor appointment, etc.)
4) The people didn't notice Steven's feelings because he always pushed away since he didn't want to be a burden.
5) Those moments where he wanted to help was because that's what he was best at doing, solving other's problem but not his own even if it lead to mistakes.
And so on...
To the people who responded to my commentary;
Paris & Magalia, Thank you for a well written, well thought out response. Though our viewpoints may be different, I think you understand the point that I was making. As for Fallout, you just keep fantasizing ( I suspect you do that a lot when you read the comments section).
My point wasn't about why Steven had PTSD. Everyone would agree it is a terrible condition. My point was how he was dealing with it. And worse yet was the reactions of his father and the other Gems. The worst thing you can do for a person with PTSD, or any psychological trauma, is let their condition be an excuse for their behavior. They'll never be able to get past it otherwise. It wasn't until he opened up to how he was feeling (And yes, how he was feeling and reacting. Not what any of the others might have felt or done) in therapy, was he able to begin to heal.
@@nuclearwire9543 They all deserved better. That was part of my point. Steven's self denial was blocking everyone's attempts at helping him. And when it finally bubbled over, they all went into this sackcloth and ashes routine, that I just found annoying.

"Everything's Fine" honestly was hard for me to watch, but because a lot of it reminded me of my own mental spiral. I was just there to help people and I repressed my emotions for a long time. And then "I Am My Monster" I think is honestly a good visualisation of a mental breakdown. I cried so much during that because a lot of that is what I needed to hear when I was going through a similar experience two years ago. Especially Connie's moment with Steven before Steven turns back into Human Steven. I've watched that episode multiple times and I bawl every time I get to Connie's part. God. Growing Pains and I Am My Monster are my favorite Future episodes.
I feel almost exactly the same. People keep on saying how his breakdowns are played for laughs, but if you’ve actually gone through that it was almost exact, at least for me. I’ve always related to Steven, but every time I watch Everything’s Fine I just cry my eyes out. I’ve spiraled and I still do and it was so painful to see something, that others sometimes have to watch me go through. It just really hurts to see people saying it was an unsatisfying ending when it helped me so much.
It was a great ride with this show. Now I want one two things (thumbs up if you want it, too) :
1. Give us a complete box set of "Steven Universe" on HD Blu-Ray, Cartoon Network. I mean like all episodes, specials, the movie, commentaries by Rebecca Sugar and the voice actors, perhaps some sing along music videos, a soundtrack exerpt, illustration and autograph cards perhaps, all nicely packaged up in a glittery shimmering box in Crystal Gems colors, topped off with a little Lion mascot plushie and little glass stones that look like the Gems perhaps. That would be glorious. I'd import that in a heartbeat. =D
2. Fans, please animate Steven's and Connie's wedding! I want to see that. ♥

Steven becomes a mindless monster because he spent his childhood fighting mindless monsters and at the point of total despair he could only see himself as an element of destruction in the world. I can really relate to that.
The amount of foreshadowing that Rebecca put into this show killed me. My friend and I freaked out when we realized that Cookie Cat was referring to Pink this entire time, and it’s been apart of the series since the very beginning.

I literally cried so much over the ending. I’ve been watching this show for almost 7 years, and it’s wild for it to be over. It has taught me about dealing with anxiety, and healthy relationships, and healthy mindsets. One of my favorite things about the show is how it teaches the audience, and doesn’t treat its audience like babies. It’s almost bittersweet; I’m extremely sad that everything is over (for now, at least), but at the same time it’s exciting to see what the crewniverse is going to go on to do. There’s so much talent and I’m so excited to see what everyone creates. Love your vids btw! ✨✨(also I literally broke down at the video at the end, and everyone saying goodbye. I COULD N O T I SOBBED)

I think Jasper getting revived easily was actually the best thing to tell the story... because it made Steven just like the Diamonds. White, Yellow and Blue have done unspeakable atrocities with their powers, but as we see in Homeworld Bound, they're using those same powers to fix those problems. They aren't acknowledging the hurt they caused, thinking that fixing those problems they started is enough. They're acting like... everything's fine. If Steven wanted to, he could have never told anyone that he shattered Jasper, just like how the Diamonds don't really acknowledge what they did (YD calling the Gem Mutants 'awful experiments' instead of 'rage induced mass murder').
If Jasper stayed dead, then Steven wouldn't have the anxiety about him being able to do horrible things without consequence. If Jasper had done something to save the say, it would have rewarded Steven for killing her. Her casual existence in the world after her death is a reminder of the hidden horrors of Steven's powers.
Also... if you're okay with watching anime, I recommend Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It's a fun and somewhat spooking ride FULL of music references (like the Aztec Superhuman ACDC). The first three parts are on Netflix. I recommend subtitles, but the dub is also good from what I hear.

okay I'm glad I'm not the only one who *burst into an explosion of tears* with the cookie cat bit. for some reason that's the thing that got me the most
When the cookie cat scene happened, and Garnet said in a distressed voice he left his family behind, this scene really played with the fact that garnet took a glimpse of steven's future right at that moment, and how she was scared to lose him with the hundreds of different scenarios where he didn't come back. This really shows the fear that we face as individuals when someone/something we know leaves and we think to each other 'are we still going to know/love/be/grow up together?'. I think Garnet's interpretation of this line is highly important to the audience as it represents us, who don't want the show to finish (and can hide our worries about it). However, the last final scene shows how we can still visit the show, and love and embrace what it did for us as individuals trying to find ourselves, and as a community that it brought together. This has been a great run together and I'm forever thankful for the cast & animators

I really liked that part of his break down included feelings of violent aggression towards others. That's so realistic but it's the kind of thing that's so taboo to talk about because it is so dark, I was blown away to see it shown in a kids cartoon

Something I really liked about the solution and what part of his problems were, was just not talking to anyone about how he's been feeling because all these emotions are ugly and he knows how much people look up to him and he's worried how they'll react if they find out the kind of unpleasant things that are going through his head. Really none of his individual issues were solved, he just needed to see that no matter how ugly he thinks he is or how unpleasant what he's going through is, he has people that love him anyway, it doesn't even matter when he's a monster they still love him, and that lifted all that pressure off him. He obviously still needs to work through his issues and now he finally knows he can because he can acknowledge those issues without the fear that everyone is going to leave because of it.
Really enjoyed the video, I cried all over again during this. Thank you for doing these videos, it's been nice to sorta re-experience Steven Universe with you.

I also cried really hard at the "I'm my monster" episode. It hit too hard. And it was very good. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and impressions - there is a lot of pieces that I missed or did not read into them the things that you did, and it was very valuable to hear that.
Concerning Jasper, I think it is actually very good that she did not do something grad after being resurrected. It is a very strong stance of every life and every person being valid and important. They don't have to be good or important personally to you (including playing a big role in your story later) for it to be important to save them.

I think the message that some trauma is always going to linger even after you move on is important. The scars, both physical and mental won't always heal or heal completely.
I feel like she hid it for two reasons. One being that she knows it upsets Steven and she's still processing her own trauma (having him coming in acting crazy saying he's fixing stuff is probably pretty scary) and that she might also have heard that Steven is going through stuff and doesn't want him to have another reminder of all the stuff he couldn't fix.
But I still do like that it's mostly covered because while we can see it peaking out, we don't know if it could be a bit better. Chances are that she'll carry it forever, but that's okay. Being hurt and not completely healing is perfectly ok and no one should put the pressure on themselves of going back to who they used to be. She can live her new life as she pleases and she won't let her cracks get in the way of that.

@@Direwolf181 is this theory because of the roundtable episode? Yes there are pink flowers, but you can see in all the shots that none of them match up against her skin. And that the pink ones don't have straight lines, all of the petals being curved.

If you'd like other shows to watch, the Netflix reboots of She-Ra and Voltron are fun to watch (the ending of Voltron isn't the best but overall it's a fun watch). My Hero Academia is also really amazing! The Dragon Prince is good, and it's written by one of the writers from Last Airbender (which if you haven't seen that definitely watch it its one of the best cartoons of all time!)

Dude. I am so happy that this show exists! I'm emotionally wrecked because it is over. But I'm also happy that a cartoon was able to impact me in such a huge way, get me so connected to the characters and teach me so much! And I am definitely recommending this series to anyone I know! I joined in a bit later ( right before Diamond Days) and rewatched all of the episodes and I just got hooked! This show is such an inspiration for me. And I will definitely take all of this show with me through the rest of my life! I hope other shows take Steven Universe as an example of a truly special saga that was not afraid to talk about deep topics that not many others touch on!

I just had a thought.
Garnet is singing the cookie cat song with everybody at first. And the reason she spoke the line "He left his family behind," with such seriousness, is because at that moment, she saw with her Future vision that Steven was going to tell everyone he's leaving. And it broke her heart, so she couldn't sing anymore.

Same! My friend was complaining that there “wasn’t enough action,” but if there was, I don’t think Steven would be able to recover. If he had hurt anyone else, I don’t think it would’ve been possible for him to recover. It would just be too much.

Imo Everything's Fine is a lot more heartwrenching, especially his breakdown which was just so uncomfortable to watch.

Also. I don't know if you care about anime yourself but I'm gonna put this out there for quarantine: Fate Zero, the prequel to Fate Stay Night, is a character driven battle anime that is also known as Fate No Budget Limit. Because it is a well done prequel the narrative tension is derived not from who will win the ultimate goal, but how the characters you would recognize from the original show get from point A to point B in their lives, and how come other characters aren't present in the original show. There are about 7 main storylines that run simulataniously to varying degrees because the show assumes you already know who the protagonist is for the first half. If you haven't watched Stay Night, you end up picking a favorite candidate and cheer them on. 11/10 do recommend.
When you said how every one in your family came in your grandfathers last moments hit me hard becase my first watch though I did not see it as that but I lost my grandfather in 9th grade and this year my senior year my grandmother died and every one came to say there good byes before they had to pull the plug and in both deaths everyone they helped or showed compassion to came which I can not look at that Sean of everyone comeing to help and be there for steven and any other way now.

After Steven started crying into lion’s face I balled my eyes out for 10 min, this show has done so much for me and seeing the main character go through the events that happened made me so emotional in a way that I can relate to a lot that happen in this mini series. I’m glad Steven is getting the help he needed and recovering just like I did 😭😭😭

Steven universe I absolutely relate to so much.
As a young kid i whatched the show I was around the same age as steven. I even look like steven before and after withiut the curly hair. I dealt with things that a kid shouldn't go through same as Steven and the episode "Storm in the room" is my favorite episode because that's what I went through my mom passed away when I was young and she had issues she went through and when she passed it seemed she left me with them. She was the nicest person I've known but she did have some secrets and her family, much like the diamonds had issues with everyone. And I was the middle ground.
And how I'm seventeen close to Steven's age and I'm going to be leaving to college far away and just like steven its hard but I'm going.to nove on.

Rebecca Sugar said something along the lines of Steven's selflessness being his biggest flaw to the point where he didn't really have a real sense of self and that this was hinted at in the extended opening where he said "I will fight to be everything that everybody wants me to be when I'm grown" because his whole life he's been trying to be who he thinks they want him to be instead of trying to figure out who he his for himself. It got to the point where he literally broke. This fucking show, man. It's so damn heavy

the ending of the final ep when it cuts to the credits blew my fricking mind and i was already just sobbing but that made me cry even more
Firstly, I loved how the show wrapped up with Steven, let's get that out there. However if we ever _do_ get supplementary material in the future (despite the Crewniverse saying it's over, the future is still open), I would like at least a short comic about how the others are doing. Like, Freckles and Bangs Lazuli, The Offcolors, Cactus Steven...just Little Homeworld shorts, essentially. Maybe the Crystal Gems fighting off stray corrupted gems and Bluebird in Steven's absence. *But* if it just ended off where Future did, then I'm fine with that too.
All this time, watching Steven Universe, I have longed to be able to share the experience with someone. Your videos give me that, and I want to say thank you.
Steven Universe Future has been very hard for me to watch. I loved the character of Steven so much, but I didn't realise how much of my own ideals I projected onto him, until he began to depart from my peace-love-harmony view of him. This happened first in Change Your Mind with the destructive rage of Pink Steven. Then the fight with Jasper really drove the point home that my headcanon was not the real canon. But the character that evolved in Future was far richer and deeper than Steven the Compassionate Peace Warrior that I had imagined, and despite the real pain I experienced going through this epilog, I am grateful for what the Crewniverse did. The ending was the perfect blend of bitter and sweet.
But we still don't know what was in the chest!

Since they're more of them than four of them, I consider myself as a crystal gem after Steven Universe came to an end.
