It sure is refreshing to hear about manufacturers who ACTUALLY listen to the concerns of their customers (and potential customers) and make changes based on that input. This is surprisingly rare. The studio that made Sonic the Hedgehog movie listening to the complaints of people when they release the teaser is another excellent example of listening to your customers (and that worked out great for them too, as the movie ended up doing really well).

Pole Position was always one of my absolute favorites! I played it all the time on the Namco Museum collection I had for PS1! And the fact this comes with Pole Position 2 is like a cherry on top of the ice cream sundae! Super cool little cabinet and I love the charm it has all over it!
Sorry, but anyone that has experienced a full sized pole position cabinet knows that it is not authentic without LOTS of cigarette burns on the ledge nearest the steering wheel. 😂

thats fantastic jon!! they really did a great job here..i could tell you were having fun playing...and it made me want to put a quarter down for next up😊😊😊
This is really cool and I may have to go get one. I remember when Pole Position first came out. The arcade in my town at the time had one of the "sit-down" versions and I remember the line to just wait to play it at the time. I did not recall there being a brake pedal as well as a gas pedal, but I went and looked it up and turns out the "sit-down" version did have a brake pedal, but the "stand-up" version did not. The local retro-cade just down the street has a "stand-up" version. I just played it recently, so that is fresh in my memory. Since I was able to play it so much recently, I actually got good enough to complete a full race (3-laps as the machine at the retro-cade is set). Awesome that this little machine featured here also has Pole Position II. Also, a bit of trivia. The "Test Track" circuit was actually supposed to be the Indianapolis Speedway, but they could not get licensing for it, so the developers just called it "Test Track". Also, the Fuji Speedway has since been re-configured since that game came out, so the real track layout no longer matches that of the video game. Also to add, another bit of trivia. The "Seaside" track was supposed to be the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix (US Grand Prix West) circuit.
Great review! Just ordered mine! Can't wait! I spent over fifty dollars one summer in '82 playing PP1 with my brother (and Dragon's Lair, too). What great memories. Thanks for bringing them all flooding back.
Looks and plays brilliant. Always liked how My Arcade actually seem to listen to feedback over the years and we can see that with the evolution of their products. Doesn’t feel like too long ago we had NES roms, Dpad screwed joysticks, screen tearing etc. Will we be getting the Pole Position Pocket Player reviewed soon? I tend to buy those and hoping to see your thoughts.

A rare 5 token rating on top of that how could you go wrong🎉🎉 deathly ordering mine today and soon I'll be able to legally drink and drive in the comfort of my own home!
I think this is a little perfect version of that great game. There is no better way to enjoy Pole Position, if not using the real cabin. Congrats to my Arcade and thanks to you Jon
very nice review! Back in the day, in the arcade, I was the Maestro. I could not be defeated. Also, I was the king on Pacman and Bump N Jump. What I loved about the arcade heyday, the golden age, was that i could go and for five bucks worth of tokens, have a great, entertaining afternoon.
From someone who has a 1982 Pole Position arcade cabinet, this does looks like a cool little machine with the analog steering. The only problem I see is that you need to go into low gear at turn sharply left at the same time around the hairpin bend to have a decent game and potentially finish the race. That looks hard to do with your fingers having to press the accelerator, steer and change gear all at the same time. To be honest, once you start the race, you can keep your foot welded to the floor really and the upright machines like I have don't even have a brake pedal. So you could tape the accelerator pedal down and just concentrate on steering and changing gear :)
Well, just bought this. That's some good looking pole position. One would think in 2024 that our mini arcades could handle more than 8-bit racers, but I'll take anything I can get. 👍👍

Pretty cool little Arcade. I wonder how much it would have cost to just put a little bigger screen or if they made the arcade a little smaller to look more to scale to screen ratio.

Happy Christmas come early! It looks really cool and not so throw away as the first gen NES emulated ones! Hope they get Namco back for arcade Rolling Thunder 1, 2! Thanks for sharing! 👍
Pole Position is such a well-refined game. This mini looks to be quite the thing -- especially since most emulated versions of Pole Position II seem to have borked control responsiveness whereas this one gets it right. Very cool!
Awesome stuff! Great news on the steering wheel being analog. Now ... are the gas and brake pedals pressure-sensitive (the arcade machine they're pots), or just on/off? (Buying it anyway, just curious).
The gas/brake feel to be digital to me. I didn't detect any variability based on pressure, but I think the emulation is interpolating speed based on how long you're holding it down, maybe? Seems to have a fast attack and slow decay, if that translates at all.
"My Arcade" knocked it out of the park with Space Invaders, especially getting the reflected screen to appear on top of the moon background, and it played superb. This Pole Position, after they listened, looks like they have done the same, and looks an instant buy for me. I just hope we in the UK get this, and it's not exclusive to the US. I really wish Arcade1up would listen to their customers, then they might actually release something worthy of the money they ask. I recently bought a Pac-Man Deluxe, and while the cab is superb, the emulation is terrible, the lag is unforgivable, the joystick is awful - and its gate is 8-way, while all the included games originally used a 4-way gate.
They are using an old version of MAME in this player. You can tell by two things: The HI and LO in the corner of the screen was a hack used in early versions of MAME to show your current gear. This was later dropped for a superimposed graphic of a gear shifter that you see in current versions of MAME. The Pole II title screen has the II logo slightly in the wrong spot on the screen. This was an old bug that went unnoticed for a long time but was eventually corrected.
Fuji Speedway was in the original. I've never played that version, actually. I had Namco game collections on PC and GBA when I was little, and both of those had a modified game that featured "Namco Speedway" instead, and the billboards were changed to feature other Namco games (I remember seeing Dig Dug and Tower of Druaga). Disappointed that those billboards aren't in this version, they looked better. Still, this machine looks pretty cool, and the inclusion of the sequel (which I didn't even know existed until now) is a great touch. But I wonder if it would've been better if the pedals were actually down on the "floor" (more likely the top of your table/desk) so you can press them with your fingertips without having to grasp the cabinet. Like the Vectrex console from 1982, which had a tabletop controller intended to be used like an arcade deck.
I'd love to see if this could be modded with a larger screen! My Arcade dodged several bullets by implementing suggested control panel changes! I WILl be ordering this, thanks for this helpful video!
I need My Arcade to make the pocket player version NOW! The reason why, it's because the controls on this cabinet look hard to use, so, I think the pocket player's controls are easier and better to use.
Pole Position was the first arcade game I ever played. I remember playing it at the local pizza place my family went to while we waited for our take out order.
I think the key to winning was to use the low gear as opposed to using the brake and never letting go of the gas pedal. This may be tough to succeed without a 3rd hand. Great review though and very impressive.
"prepare to qualify" most iconic video game sound bite of all time.
Have to cover your mouth when you say it (like Kenny) to get the full experience.
I used to work QA at Konami and Michael Klug was my manager in the early 2000s! Super nice guy! He is the record holder for Pole Position...

Pole Position was the first arcade game I ever played. I remember playing it at the local pizza place my family went to while we waited for our take out order.
LOVE MY ARCADE!!!
This was a great review. I would love for them to do RAD RACER, RC PRO AM or even OFF-ROAD.
Got mine through the link
Thanks dude
I wonder if there’s a way to recess the monitor ?
This looks like a home run to me.
I think the key to winning was to use the low gear as opposed to using the brake and never letting go of the gas pedal. This may be tough to succeed without a 3rd hand. Great review though and very impressive.
