This was the first cutscene I got in the game, some 25 years ago on the Sega CD version. I felt devastated, because I had no clue that my failures on missions had consequences for a bigger overall story, and as a kid I was horrified that these furballs would kill innocent civilians.
Damn... and to think that there was no age rating back in 1990... Thankfully, I played the SNES version as a kid. It only shows a blue planet in the cutscene and the text has been changed from "murdered" to "captured".

This wasn't the ending. This just was in the middle of the game to let you know that you were doing pretty poorly.
