I don't understand what kind of restoration is this if he didn't change not even a single capacitor. After 40+ years, electrolytic capacitors are done and need to be replace. Also belts and rubber parts needs to be replace and calibration needs to be done as well. This is not restoration, it's just a dust cleaning. Don't be fooled by this clip, restoration si far more complicate compare to this dust cleaning
Agreed!. It's not necessary to get the dust out of every crack and crevice. But cleaning pots and switches and DeOxit plus belts, pucks, and caps are a minimum. I would not have removed that head stack and guides from the base either.
You did an excellent job with the mechanical mechanism and cleaning, but I think you should have replaced the electrolytic capacitors because the device is very old
I agree; all he did was clean the mechanics. A 30 year old reel to reel is absolutely going to have dired out caps. And not nearly enough heat sink compound on those transistors. Not to sound critical.
Good morning sir. Analog recording it's used for in the music business. I had one of these many years ago. Same problem but no one could fix it here. Thank you for this video. Wow!!?!!
I have not seen one of these since 2002. We were still sending shows via courier to NYC on tape. I switched all our shows still using reel to reel over to digital and I uploaded them to NYC WE took our reel to reel machines out of service a month later and that was the last time I used one. The remote units plugged into CTCSS remote trigger units that turned the unit on and off. Back in the day we had 3 or 4 of these each with its own CTCSS remote trigger and we would record the entire weeks promos, talents, commercials and music and we had the CTCSS tones loaded into buttons on the console so we just pressed whichever tone we needed to start the next machine and we would have to put the stop tone on the start of the other reel. It took a list of the actions of each reel. WE would " head and tail" each cut. So the tail of the talent doing the intro into the song would have the tone to start the music reel and the head in the music reel cut would have the tone to stop the talent reel. It was a lot of work.
This is an old-timer tape player that needed the most amount of attention. This is what was used during the Radical 60s era. It was used right long before tape cassettes and tape cassette players were invented.

Nice video but you should have put some kind of wood oil on that cabinet and then used jewelers polish for the front top faceplate...trust me, it works miracles.
You 're looking at this antique ...someone likes to restore it..at the same time, why?.There are thousands of people doing this on the Internet...that nostalgia, the figure will win...it's all in the trash in 5-7 years...Or all to the museum

All he did was clean. No restoration. No capacitor replacement. Any bad circuits are still bad, just clean. I see no power being applied to the two boards he 'tested". You should not oil meters! New belts? Nah old ones are fine. Are we missing another video perhaps.
I enjoyed the cleanup and lube of this Teac. I do not recall this model but seems to stand out from all the more purely mechanical tape transports. I noted your cleanup of the reel motor drive units did not include any testing of the torque capabilities of the drive motors which appear to be good old brush type dc motors and not brushless servo motor design like the direct drive capstan motor? As I recall reading such motors are good for so many hours and then they start to deteriorate due to worn brushes. I would love to see how and if they can be restored because these would be a definite weak link in future reliability based upon how many hours are on them. Also the tape you used to demonstrate the machine is apparently recorded in a different formal because I heard some audio playing backwards on this 1/4 track format deck. But it is impressive the deck came back to life after complete disassembly, cleaning and reassembly..
This is a fantastic video. You seemed to be really skilled. Where are you located? Do you have workshop? Do you sell reel-to-reel used and restored Tape recorders?
Your video inspired me to restore a similar Teac, but I was disappointed you chose not to show the screws (at least partially) being replaced. I found I had put the upper portion of the recorder back in the wood frame only to find I needed to screw down the black bar at the top "before" putting it back. Certainly my bad, but you gave no indication it needed to be done before dropping in the tape portion. I would recommend editing them in a way that gives some indication of all aspects if you are offering these as a help. It can still be done in less than 45 minutes if edited properly.

I just wish you could have explained Exactly what you used during the process.. i.e. types of fluids you used for various parts cleaning and lubrication oils or grease. I have about 6 reel to reel machines in my recording studio (Tascam 80-8, Sony TC 355, Teac 3300, Tapesonic 70 DFT & TRSH etc.) which I would love to restore and I've tried to maintain them ; but the job seems overwhelming when you do a full "field strip" down to the chasis. Did you have a schematic?? Insofar as I'm down to my last box of magnetic tape, I'll just try to keep them running with alcohol & Q-tips until they die a slow death. But, very nice job.

You did an excellent job with the mechanical mechanism and cleaning, but I think you should have replaced the electrolytic capacitors because the device is very old
