  • I anchor out front of a small village that was destroyed by an Earthquake. Some locals showed me around the ruins and I saw the clean-up effort going on. A few people lost their lives and there was lots of injuries but it was 3 days after the quake before any help arrived from outside. I felt like a bit of an intruder though so didn't stay very long. A bunch of kids came out to my boat for a sunset fish and music session.
    I also answer a bunch of questions from viewers.

    I bought the boat to get away from peo....I bought the boat to go to lies crowded areas. Vernon...I just realized why of all the sailing channels, you're the only one I support. You and I are similar in many ways. Thank you for all your videos, your honesty, and your hard work on getting your content created and uploaded.

    Hello mate, Curt here from Az USA.. love your videos, and I’m getting ready for my sailing adventure... you’ve been a great inspiration for me to just let it ride and try my hand at going for it on my own as well. Thank you Sir for the wonderful content

      Yes Curt, happy for you that you're close to the kick-off. I'm glad you have found some inspiration in my videos. What boat have you got and where will you be heading first?

      I’ll be going boat shopping hopefully by mid February in the Miami area, as I live in Arizona.. from there I plan to run east towards the DR and PR. I’m gonna be working and living in the usvi seasonally, and then cast off during hurricane season around the Caribbean the first couple years.. but the eventual plan is to sail south to Brazil and Argentina.. as far as boats, I’m a fan of the Cheoy Lee, and other Asian built boats. But I’ll have lots to look at in south Florida.. Thx for the response friend.. 🤙🏼

    Great video, I really liked the Q&A. I'm looking forward to your story about your journey coming soon. You are an inspiration. Enjoying what you do for work, I think, as you do, is critical. And to be in a place you can access the natural world for adventures is also key.

    thnx mate....another dandy.
    felt my first quake about 10 days or so ago. (i'm canadian, live in n.e. thailand) a 6.1 hit about 300 km n.e. of here on the thai/laos border, i was sitting on the couch and felt myself swaying...thought i was having a dizzy spell but then saw the curtains swinging a bit. it was so minor that only a couple others in the village noticed it but it was felt in bangkok which is another 500 km away. so i can check that off the bucket list, but that's as close as i want to get to one.
    great channel....always enjoyed.
    btw....about not giving out the GPS coordinates. i appreciated your reply/reasoning to that gentleman who inquired.
    btw....i've got my name picked out for the boat i'll never have. james taylor had a lovely song which had a sailing type theme called "terra nova" which i think means "new land." so when i drift on to sleep at night and think nice thoughts, terra nova is the boat i sail. : )

    • @SailingLearningByDoing
      @SailingLearningByDoing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Bert. I grew up in New Zealand and we got shaken quite often. I remember quite liking the sensation as a kid. Earthquakes are completely normal but our concrete houses and steel bridges are not flexible enough.
      Terra Nova would be a great name for a boat. First boat might be better with Terror Nova though;)

    • @bertski60
      @bertski60 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SailingLearningByDoing as i drift off to sleep sailing the "terra nova", although i haven't sailed a nautical meter in my real life...i find myself an expert sailor somehow.
      anyhoo....if you want the name it's yours (not that it's mine to give), but "terror nova" would stick in the brain longer, no doubt. i'd go with that one actually...it's better.
      thnx for the reply, mate. (listen to james taylor"s "terra nova".)

      @@SailingLearningByDoing That village made me think of the story of the 3 little pigs. The 1st little pig would be the cleverest of the pigs, in that part of the world. After the earthquakes, he had the know-how and access to materials to rebuild his own house.

    I have not a question but a small request. When I watch videos I always open google earth and take a look at what is to be seen there. Sometimes it's easy to find the places you visit on a map but this is one of those that is hard to find. Could you please add a google maps link in your video descriptions to some of the anchorages/villages you visit?

    • @SailingLearningByDoing
      @SailingLearningByDoing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Andrew. I'm on the fence about wether to even name the places let alone give co-ordinates. Main reason is to leave these sorts of places "undiscovered". I like to find my own places of interest and never really research places before going there and I'm sure others coming behind will appreciate "discovering" places for themselves. If you like personally to know the locations then hit me up: info@vernondeck.com

    Hey, Vernon. Another great episode - such a shame about the village but what a testament to the resillience of the local people!
    I tried looking for the ovital app in the Android play store but there doesn't seem to be one - unless it's called something different there. I went to the website and tried downloading there but it wouldn't work...

    Hello Vernon, on the subject of leaving the boat for 6 months this is exactly what I am looking to do in this part of the world in the not so distant future with my family. You are part of the inspiration to do so... Do you always go back to the same place? There are really almost no options around PNG and Indonesia? Is Ramja Ampat sufficiently protected from tropical storms and hurricanes/typhoons? I really need to understand the seasons and routes in this part of the world...How could I learn more about it? Thanks! Good winds, and good luck on your amazing journey.

      Hi Tone. Plenty of people leave their boats at Helena Marina in Sorong. Its owned by Wick, a nice Ozzie guy. I have left my boat in the area now twice but next year I'll be heading west and will next live my boat in Langkawi, this time next year. Novemeber till June in Raja Ampat is the calm season, mostly glassy flat sea's. July till October is trade wind season. There are no Hurricanes as its right on the equator but there are local squalls that roll through.

    17:51 Regarding radio ,if you have no licenses, how are you legally using the radio?
    I'm have a SRC/VHF certificate which is mandatory here in Norway at least if one wants to use VHF radio on the boat.

    • @SailingLearningByDoing
      @SailingLearningByDoing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Andreas. I did mention that I DO have a license for the radios but what I was getting at is that doing the license is just a formality and you dont actually learn how to Use the HF radio. VHF is simple, you just turn it one, pick an appropriate channel and go for it but HF is way more complicated.

    • @AndreasEUR
      @AndreasEUR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SailingLearningByDoing ahh, my bad. Here in Norway there's a test to see if one knows how to use the radio :p

    Hey, Vernon. I have been thinking about this for a while... if I were to sail around to some remote areas of Indonesia, what are some things locals could really use? I am thinking things like tools, fishing gear, etc. I was thinking I would stock up on these things to trade or give to those in need. Any thoughts?

    • @SailingLearningByDoing
      @SailingLearningByDoing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Max. As far as Inod goes I've only been in the Raja Ampat and Halmahera areas so far. From my experience so far I feel like trading stuff is far more widely done in the Solomons and PNG than Indo. It could be different for other areas though. Basically I wouldn't go and buy anything. Pretty much every person living in a western country has a garage/attic full of old clothes, kids toys, books and other stuff that is junk to them but gold to a person from a small village. Before I left Australia last year I put a couple of posts on local FB sites and within a week I had about 200kgs of kids clothing, books, hand tools etc that people brought down to the marina. This way you are recycling, the people donating feel like they are doing something good and the recipients are more than stoked.
