Seeing your infected wounds and Deon's ear..and having antibiotics, we're blessed. Made me think about sailors from days gone by and how tough those men must've been to survive. No medicine, bad food, bad water (not all the time) and how little cuts heal slowly on a boat. Crocs and gators scare me! I couldn't imagine getting caught by one and experiencing the death roll they do...yikes! Glad you didn't get caught by the croc and glad you healed! And as always, thank you for taking the time to capture, edit and narrate your videos!
Yeah its sure nice to have access to good medicine. Tiny cuts get infected so fast in the tropics, I know it and take care but still, it can get out of hand really quick. Crocs are on another level and I'm pretty scared of them, much more so than sharks.
Outstanding! Your synopsis of the excesses of western culture was spot on. The people of the world who have done nothing to contribute to the tragedy of climate change, but rather have lived in harmony with nature, will bear the brunt of our stupidity.

I plan to go sailing around the world, and I see the videos you uploaded on TH-cam, and I'm inspired by you. You are a great and special person. You are connected to reality and you have human love. I am your fan and thank you very much
A great reality check on where our world is heading ..... it’s been an inspiration watching your videos and look forward to following in your footsteps one day .... thanks for sharing 🤘
Vernon.. this certainly was 30 minutes of viewing pleasure! I sincerely believe you have captured the meaning of life. As you explained at the beginning, the difference in the way the rat race society functions.. it is actually completely disfunctional, and so good to see you enjoying your interaction with people who value and love the things in life that are truly important. You are an inspiration to all who have opened their eyes and long to live a life that`s real.. I`m a year or two from getting my own boat, but when that moment arrives I`ll be leaving the blind chaos behind , living permanently aboard in as much self sufficiency as I can find or invent. Every time I watch one of your videos it reinforces my thinking and my determination to live before I die, I`m no spring chicken but the dream is strong and will arrive. My son will be joining me, at 29 years old he`s had enough of the Matrix (a bit clich`e but true nonetheless) already. You`ve got life spot on, and time is the most valuable thing we can ever have. Good on you mate, I thank you!
Good on you Steve for having a goal for a life you find worth living. Im happy with my life and don't regret anything much at all. I still have a lot of things to acomplsh. Maybe we'll meet out on the big blue one day. Life is for living!
Thank you for your video. First one of yours I have seen. I appreciate your mixed content between sailing and your taking the time to meet and visit with the local people, sharing your thoughts and experiences, and your honest heart towards these locals . . precious, and valuable !! I hope to do the same in the near future with purpose. Shalom ~
I really enjoy that you show how sailing is so much more than the boat and the ocean. It's a chance to contemplate, to get away from the busy-ness of our lives, the intrusiveness of the Internet. I'm about to go sailing tomorrow on my O'day 20 on a beautiful mountain lake tomorrow in Virginia. I've never sailed offshore before, but one of the things I'm so impressed with is your attention to safety, backup systems and having a boat that seems so strong and easily manageable by a single person. Also, I totally agree in having systems that are not all inter-related with each other. Independent GPS, etc make so much more sense. Convenience has a cost when those systems are all tied together. My friend has a Tesla and a small battery failed last week. As a result, he couldn't even open his car door, trunk or hood. He had to get a jump from another car battery, through prying open something in the bumper to get at some dragon clips, just to get in the car. The battery can't be replaced by a neighborhood battery dealer so his car is stuck in his garage for a week. This is the problem with interrelated systems that seem so "cool" at first.
Thanks Craig. Yeah everything seems to get more connected. All connected to the "cloud" and Ai running everything. Out at sea I feel like its the last freedom and I plan on keeping this. I hope you get a similar feeling sailing your lake, must be magical up there.
Vernon Ive recently moved to png and my dream is to sail and basically do what you're doing. I'm a civil engineer and had a very privileged life. I had watched a few of your videos before and I really enjoyed them. I liked your approach to meeting people and your non judgemental and open way. This video was a revelation. At 60yo it has opened my eyes to whats important and particularly the impact of climate change. I'd like to thank you for giving me a lightbulb moment, the video was life changing for me , you elucidated whats wrong with western lifestyle. As an amateur photographer I love your pictures but most of all how you care about the subject. More power to your elbow and if I can help you please let me know. Mick Kelly
Hi Mick. So nice to hear from you, thanks for taking the time to write. Where in PNG have you moved too? I love this country and cant wait to return for a longer visit. When viewers of my photos or videos say that they have been inspired, energised or in some way positively affected then I guess I've done my job and achieved what I set out to do. It gives me great please when people like yourself write. Take care and I hope you'll enjoy my upcoming videos.
Thanks! I'm a pretty honest and straight forward guy. I do think that my style will change, but not because of how many followers I might get but just because I'm creative and don't want to just keep putting out the same stuff. Its actually pretty easy to get popular on You Tube, there are very easy rules to follow. Obviously having a hot girl aboard and in every thumbnail, being disorganised and have stuff constantly breaking, keep the viewers waiting to see if you actually survive. I try to stay away from those winning methods and just give a raw account. I will also always try to get the best cinematography I can, most other channels lack in this department.
With all the myriad of sailing channels these days, I’ve become very selective of which ones I follow. I’ve found your channel to be one of my favorites. As much as I eschew the TH-cam sailing channels that have only a small portion of their content actually devoted to sailing and mostly devoted to themselves, I found your focus and reflections on the differences between the so-called developed and undeveloped worlds in this particular video to be very thought provoking and insightful. Thanks much.
Thank you Bobbie, I feel pretty much the same way about the many YT channels out there. I try not to follow the "tried and true" methods other use and just be honest
You’re one heck of a human being, cheers for reminding us about human spirit at this time especially what the world is going through now. I will keep looking out for this channel
2:00 I'm from North America who loves water more than land and I'd like to say "HELLO BROTHER!" I know it's not the same an time has passed but there's no better time than NOW!puff on be blessed and safe passage to come 🌬️💨⛵
Loving your channel mate. I'm new to sailing and have just bought an old rusty 36 footer, found your latest video about the interior and was instantly hooked. You're clearly a brilliant photographer and that shows in your footage. But your down to earth commentary and the interactions you have with people really bring it up another notch and keep me coming back for more. Keep it up!
Very glad to have found you. Great sailing stories...Your message is inspiring, Connie and I are working hard on the boat work, we moved from land and are excited to learn and explore.
Still working full-time here in BC and restoring our classic for new horizons and adventures. Really enjoyed your video message regarding life, stuff, and the importance of real people and places. Just about to start learning how to edit video as well. @@SailingLearningByDoing
I LOVE your videos. You are an inspiration. And honestly, you've made me completely rethink how I want to interact with the world. You've given me a whole new perspective. Thank you.
Thanks Noah. Man, I'm so happy to hear my videos have had that affect on you. I have been inspired by many different people throughout my life and I thank them all.
@@SailingLearningByDoing And those experiences that you've had, you summed them all up and poured them into your videos so more of us can get the tiniest taste of what we should be living for. I really appreciate the reply. You are totally right about how society has become so consumed by material things, and I will admit I am guilty of it, but I really appreciate you bringing it to light. Thanks again. Keep on doing what you're doing, you really are an inspiration to a lot of us.
What a journey, Vernon. Great words on the capitalist quagmire we wade around in. The footage and commentary have been awesome. It's been a real pleasure to go with you on your journey and looking forward to the next instalments. Kia kaha e hoa!
Watching your videos has given me a good idea of how it works as a solo sailor and helped me in my decision to aim to head off cruising in the next couple of years. I've had the boat for a year now (she's a 1977 Islander 36), but knew that it was a big decision to make, so I've hesitated until recently. I think you've shown that yes, you need to prepare well, but that also sometimes you just need to do it and find out for yourself!
Hi Adam, well I'm very happy my videos have in some way inspired you to make a decision. Theres always going to be that little voice on one side that says "wait a minute, this is crazy" That little voice stops many people from ever doing anything. There is always going to be something that could in theory go wrong, but then you could also get hit by a bus tomorrow. Prepare yourself as well as you can, set a deadline and get out there.
🇨🇦 Your so right about people, there are a few of them struggling to grow up and find their spiritual connection with the creator and this earth we share with one another! As we say; One Planet, One people Please. 🌎 We have to eliminate all forms of prejudice in order to progress. We just found your channel and like what we see and here so far.
Love your videos on sailing!! Have watched every one of them so far, looking forward to 2019! Your videos are no BS, which I love, and you really interact with the locals, which means a lot.
I think I have watched all of your episodes. You are an inspiration, Vernon! I kind of got knocked down a bit of late, but I intend to follow in our wake in the not-too-distant future. Living in Thailand at the moment and plan to buy a boat in Oz. Then I will head through all of the areas you have shown and beyond. I was planning to do this anyway... then I found your videos. Can't wait to see what the next season turns up! And hey, if you need crew for a couple of weeks at some point... ;)
G'day mate, thanks for the comment and stoked you like my videos, plenty of new ones coming soon. That sucks you've been having a hard time but sometimes that makes the success taste all the much sweeter. You could probably find a cheaper and better equipped boat in Mayasia or Thailand than in Oz. Around Langkawi there are always great boats for sale as lots of people get scared to cross the Indian Ocean and sell their boats there.
The channel is great. You inspire me as a solo sailor to start a channel. It's my first year out cruising, and I find it pretty difficult to find time to do it, but I think it's time to get off my ass and step it up!
Cheers Brock. Yeah it takes some time for sure, specially the editing, for me anyway. Had to learn that from scratch. I try to take 1 days a week to film.
Very documentary really enjoy your format and narrative. You are quite the philosopher type . Complement fyi . Looking forward to more travels Cheers and fairwinds from the @captains.chair
As always love the video. You are down to earth with your views, I can say I think around the same . One question, we are just starting out on You Tube only on E. 11. We mainly use a GoPro, but would love to have your opinion on what else to use. Kim
Thanks, glad you liked the video, bit of a behemoth that one. I use go pros a lot but they have their limits for sure. The audio on them is horrible, I use an external mic on mine. I use 4-5 different cameras throughout my videos as I have yet to find the perfect all-in-one camera. The thing with GoPro is that everything is in focus all the time, theres no blurry background. That makes it easy but theres no cinematic feeling. Using a newer smart phone can give you good results, after that you've got to step up to a more expensive DSLR.
Thanks for another great video. Can you provide more info on the navigation app you are using?. Looking forward to your next video.Keep up the great work.
Cheers Bevan. That app I mentioned is called Ovitalmap. Its a cheese app and takes some figuring out but i rely on it now. Basically you download the satellite images for the region you're in or going to and then it overlays your position onto those images. I see where I am and my track and can zoom in and see rocks, reefs etc. Amazing tool!
Thanks for the recap Vernon. Spot on with your comments about how we’ve lost our way. The people on those islands have “nothing” by Western standards yet have happiness figured out. Gut wrenching that our ignorance in destroying the planet will directly impact them. Thanks for sharing your journeys and telling these stories. We need more of this.
Hi guys, yeah glad you liked it. Its one of the main reasons I brought a boat and learnt how to sail, to be able to go see for myself what is important. I'll keep telling these stories and hopefully inspire a few others at the same time.
Hi Vernon, Massive problem with this video - it is W A A A A A A A A Y too short mate. We love your videos so very much. Very PROUD to be able to support you in a small way just to say THANK YOU for making such incredible videos. Can't wait for the new season ! Our "normie" friends are waffling about a new season of "Game Of Thrones" - we are hanging out with baited breath for the new season of "Learning By Doing" ! Cheers, Gavin & Amanda PS - that attack on Dion sounded horrible. Not being able to help while a rotten old handbag was trying to eat your mate must have terrible. You sounded so laid back; yeah, after a few minutes I went & picked him up in the dinghy . . . hehehehe ! The reality of the moment must have been quite different.
Haha, thanks guys and thanks so much for your continued support. If only you could convince your "normie" friends to watch something real! Yeah that croc attack was surreal, it all happened in slo-mo and we were both just happy to be alive. If it had gone for me, being out in the deeper channel I think it would have got me. Dion was lucky to be close to shore.

Hi Vernon, I’m glad you had a good time traveling through Solomon and PNG without any problems/troubles. I’m from both countries and they both get their share of bad representation from the western countries. Most tourists read too much into the troubles they potentially might run into and end up not having a good time coz they scared all the time. Anyway, i’m happy you had a first hand experience and hope you keep sailing and sharing with us. Safe travels my friend.
Hi Dugar, yeah man, had a wonderful time in both countries and will for sure go back for a longer time. The people I met were super friendly and I never felt in any sort of danger.
Hey Vernon, great vid. You have done well with where you've travelled not to encounter and strife. I haven't travelled, though from other streamers and forum accounts, there is piracy happening around Indonesia
Thanks Shane. Piracy is like shark attacks, if it happens then the whole world hears about it. I'm not saying there is zero risk, what I'm saying is that there is risk wherever you go and it not a legitimate reason for me not to go and explore these places.
@@SailingLearningByDoing totally agree mate, personally I'd prefer a gun to help back me up to protect myself and my wife. Though I wont take one.If we never went anywhere "because of" or "just in case".... we will never go anywhere or do anything. Hi Bob, thanks for watching. Yeah I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable going far offshore in a 27ft boat even though I've met a few who do it without problems. The cost would be far lower of course but I enjoy the extra space I have, larger water tanks, more stability at anchor etc.
Really nice vid! Perfect lifestyle, snow and ocean... Just a weee tiny bit envious. Hahaha. Looking forward to the coming episodes... But where in Switzerland is this episode filmed?
If you're into podcasts then I gave a pretty good explanation of my work with Volcom in a recent one: wearelookingsideways.com/podcasts/073-vernon-deck This coming season I'll be exploring the Raja Ampat region a bit more, might head up to the Philippines as well. Indian Ocean at some stage for sure but maybe not for 2-3 years yet. My goal is to sail around the world as SLOWLY as possible.
Just being devils advocate: showing these places to the masses, such as Noro, Morovo Lagoon, and Ontong Java; do you think helps or could possibly hurt these incredible oasis' of humanity? Possibly putting these people and places on the map could create a tourist boom. Also, the dichotomy that this video shows is incredible. We (majority westerners) get lost in our own day to day lives that we never bother to lift our heads out of our phones and give a simple "how are you?" to a stranger. It almost has become taboo...on the opposite end of this observation is in these little atolls that you find. Where the Solomons, welcome you with open arms and take interest in your life story...it's really cool knowing people out there still know how to live life, and not live someone else's advertised life! Thanks for opening our eyes!
Hi Michael, yes I've thought about that issue. I really don't think a tourist boom could feasibly happen in those areas. Just knowing a name is still quite a long way from actually making the effort to go there when there is no infrastructure, tour packages etc. I would hate to go back to any of these places and see and hotel block being built!!! Maybe in future I should just mention the approx part of the world I'm in? Thanks for watching the video and feeling something. These days if you actually start a conversation with someone you are seen as some sort of weirdo. So sad. Please share the video with anyone who you think might appreciate it.
Just found your videos I'm not a sailor but I'm in the process of building myself a homemade pontoon house boat and plan on living on it probably till I get tired of it I live in Florida am going to try to run the boat on solar power been looking at a fellow in Panama with a boat called the sharkslicer he runs it on electric motors straight off solar panels got a long way to go with this project though
Hi Clarence. Yeah in your part of the world its super easy to live off the solar. You just need do have the right balance of solar panels and batteries. And it very affordable nowadays too. Good luck
Love your videos Vernon. You're a massive inspiration. What's the name of that app you use again for satellite imagery navigation? Heard you speak about it on the ocean sailing podcast as well.
Mate i am about to head off from townsville directly to the Solomon Islands, then work my way up to new Ireland then along the top of papua then up to the Philippines. I will be sailing a fastback 32 catamaran. Have you got any advice.
@@michaeltrothe4945 as it looks right now you'll still need to quarantine in Honiara. I wouldn't do that as the anchorage there is pretty unsafe and I'd not want to leave my boat unattended for more than a few hours. Who know, maybe in a month it will be different🤞🏻
@@justme.9711 GoPro cameras are pretty incredible really. We have 2 hero 9's now and they are pretty awesome. Actually often they are too sharp and saturated and I end up pulling the colours back down in editing.
Again you charmed my soul and even no frostbite !!! How are you earning money 💰? Photo shoots of ??? Ahhh just heard you explain your photographer work. Stay safe and in wonderment 🍀👀🍀
Hi Phil, good question. I brought the first one hoping it would be the boat that ouwld take me around the world but as it was my first ever boat I really didn't know too much. I figured, full keel, solid GRP hull, heavy, short strong mast would all be good things. For many people that exactly what they see as a "blue water" boat. It was a great learning boat for sure and I'm glad I had her. But she was over 40 years old and the maintenance alone would have ruled her out from long passages. The hull had a lot of flex and most or all she was just plain slow. In the trade wind areas she might have slugged along but anywhere close to the equator I would have been motoring more often than not. My new boat is a custom built offshore race boat, built with exactly that in mind, going fast over long distances. She is very simple, easy to sail and needs very little maintenance. She will sail hull speed in 10 knots and with my asymetric spinnaker she'll move along great in even 5 knots of wind. In the Solomon Island, PNG and Indonesia you just cant find spare parts and often not even diesel. So having a boat you can SAIL everywhere is key. I used slightly over 100L of diesel last season and sailed 3500miles.
@@SailingLearningByDoing Thanks Vernon for the comprehensive reply and some good points as im currently in the market looking for a blue water yacht in NZ, cheers
Very interesting review! I wonder what happened to the young guy.... he seemed so excited about the trip.... did he get bored? Depressed? Just curious. Cheers mate!
Hi Dan. Yeah it was a shame he didn't last. Pretty much as soon as we oct sight of Australia he went his bed and really didn't get out again for 8 days. Had some sort of mental meltdown. He came right when we arrived in Honiara but I sent him home as I didn't need that sort of crew.
@@SailingLearningByDoing :O :O A reply :D I'm sad because I'm coming towards your newest video too quickly, and then I'll have to wait for another one :P But I guess that means I'll have time to do some tidying and thinking about if to sell apartment and start living, or if to keep apartment and continue merely existing in this "work to live and pay debt"-world. There's no guarantee I'll be happier with a boat or a convert sprinter to camper .. Nothing's guaranteed at all really, but I am a bit tired of working day in and day out and having most of my money just sink into bills. (Regardless of it being my own fault) Even if I manage to sell both my last motorcycle and my car/truck I'll have to have an income every month.. If I sell I could work 3-5 months a year and do whatever the other months. Downside is no longer having property here in Oslo.
People that get ripped off in certain places... you have to ask yourself why, where is thier head at and what kind of energy they’re producing. I figure if your genuinely nice and giving (like you are) it really is not an issue.
Yeh you're right there. I found that if I went and showed interest(which i genuinely have) in what the locals are doing, their cultures etc then they really welcome you and are truly generous.
I find single handing to be more enjoyable. Good crew is great but you, the captain, have to worry of peoples safety, , comfort, schedules, needs, etc. When by myself, the absorption of my surroundings is unhindered. Makes for memorable time.
Yep you're spot on, I feel the same way. When sailing alone I act completely instinctively without really thinking about things, I just become one with the boat and the conditions and act accordingly. Its such a great feeling.
I’ve gotta say that I’m really enjoying your videos. Both of my daughters are successful professional photographers augustvan.com and nicolefranzen.com and I’m a traveling sailor. Because of the synergy we have I’ve shared your vids with the girls in hopes they’ll get the same inspiration from you that I have. I wish more people had your positive and graceful attitude. The world would be a better place. Thank you
It's a cliche, but true, that the more people have the more they want. I guess these less affluent societies often have stronger inter-personal bonds which they value above material possessions. In the wealthy countries we need to be greedier for social capital which will in turn make us less greedy for material capital. In the long run that shift will make us happier and the planet healthier.
2:44 Amen dude, AMEN! We have too much! We are in zombie mode!! Same shit day in and day out, and if you don't have have an apartment or house then people will call you homeless or look down on you.. There was an article a few years back where they called a dude here in Norway homeless, even though he lived in a camper.. He's not fucking homeless, he's just houseless and apartmentless. A home can be an effin cave... It's all about what you make it.. IN 2019 you're supposed to have debt, work like a busy little ant, don't ask questions, especially not about what the government is doing with globalism etc... If you do ask questions you're weird.. Even though chances are one is one of the people with eyes open. Right now I want to leave what I have.. it annoys me every day that I have to work day in and day out just to pay bills .. (Granted, it's I who caused it.. ) But why should we work 12 months a year?? Only reason is to sustain the zombie world we live in.. I want to work MAX 4-5 months of the year. With a salary that pays €2500 after tax a month, 4-5 months of work should be more than enough to sustain someone financially rest of the year.
Yes! I agree completely. How different would our society look if people earned less, worked less and spent more of their time creating, helping others etc. Working 100%, having no time for family or friends and then spending all your hard earned money on rubbish is just a fools game. People play this game without questioning it because its just "what you're supposed to do"
Vernon, great stuff , really enjoyed your video. I have spent 3 months mentoring in Java, felt the same way about what the western world has lost track of what is more important in life. I sail too, bought a Catalina 36 from Scarborough Qld 12 months ago and sailed her home to Gippsland Lakes Victoria, Had my first two month cruise as a skipper with Jodie th-cam.com/video/YguwV9Bu4LM/w-d-xo.html and more to come,. Love the shots of you sailing with the spinnaker, you have a down to earth and honest approach, and hopefully one day we can sail past each other, who knows. cheers Paul & Jodie
Ah cool. I know she’s been put up for sale. A few people have asked me about her. I don’t have contact with the current owner, just know him on Instagram as Woodyblackworth.
Haha, I thought some people wouldn't know that word as its a pretty specific term. Its a coral tower or column. The water might be 5m deep but coral bommies grow up to the surface in some places. So if you drag anchor at night you cant see them, your depth sounder doesn't detect them and you are in trouble.
In general people in the cities walk around actively avoiding eye contact or walk with their phone in front of their faces. Of course there are exceptions, small towns and communities.
First of All, great footage and a pleasure to watch. At some stage in the Video you talk about climate change and the effect it has on the people on the Island. Since you seem to be a self aware and philosophical guy, I wonder if you do you have an innere conflict about your impact on klimate, since you do travel a lot and for work you obviously need to. Not judging just curious?
Hi Mut, firs thanks for watching! Yeah obviously I think about that a lot. For 20 years I've been flying around the world, sometimes 7-10 times per year for different jobs. Since I brought my boat in 2015 I've only been working 6 months per year and living on the boat the other 6 months. While on the boat I estimate my foot print to be close to 90% less than what it is when I'm working. I used 60l of diesel, 100l of petrol, 16kg of Butane from May till Dec. I created almost no rubbish in this time as I acquired food from local gardens and caught my own fish. I don't think a few individuals are going to change anything, we need a system change and a mentality change in order to make any real difference. I'm hoping my videos will motivate some people to get out there and see fir themselves first hand whats going on and also to see how beautiful our planet really is.
You're right! Our western livestyle is about laziness and comfort. Saving the climate is about taking the comfort and some possibilities away. Thats Not popular and nobody elects people that want to take something away. People need to realize what's at stake. Taking the bicicle instead of the car is healty and might save you a heart attack. Eating less Red meat might save you from cancer. Making holidays in a exotic country is a good Story to tell but someone from that country might find your country exotic. Many people have seen more from foreign countries than what's on their doorstep. People should think about the concequences of there doing more often. Thanks for your input, and bon voyage.

Awesome life experiences, plus great storytelling and video editing throughout. By the way, those 5 seconds starting at 8:52 blew my mind. 🤟
Thanks. I just re-watched that episode and felt like I've never seen it before. What an amazing year that one was.
A great reality check on where our world is heading ..... it’s been an inspiration watching your videos and look forward to following in your footsteps one day .... thanks for sharing 🤘
Thanks guys, glad you getting inspired.
Vernon.. this certainly was 30 minutes of viewing pleasure!
Sailing Learning By Doing awsome, just awsome hope to be doing the Sam soon
Wow, I enjoyed every second of your story.
I'm so glad!
Shalom ~
Thank you, and welcome to our channel. I hope you'll enjoy some of our other videos. We try to keep all the videos very honest and simple.
I'm living in Switzerland and you're speaking from my heart :) Need to go back on the water!
Mountain fever
I love your videos. I only hope your style won't change as the popularity of your channel grows!
Excellent summary of your trip Vernon. Just out there doing it, without the b*s* . Making it so easy to journey with you - thanks!
Glad you liked it Domino.
You’re one heck of a human being, cheers for reminding us about human spirit at this time especially what the world is going through now. I will keep looking out for this channel
Thanks William, I'm nothing special, just living the life I want to live.
Well worth it to spend this 29.15 time.It was good to hear your opinion about people.
Keep it up!
Hi Sam and congrats on your new boat, you can now look forward to all you money and time going into that.
Loved your last year season, can’t wait for the next, thanks heaps.
Very glad to have found you. Great sailing stories...Your message is inspiring, Connie and I are working hard on the boat work, we moved from land and are excited to learn and explore.
Hi guys wow you have a beautiful boat! That must need a huge amount of work to keep in good shape. Where are you hiding next?
Still working full-time here in BC and restoring our classic for new horizons and adventures. Really enjoyed your video message regarding life, stuff, and the importance of real people and places. Just about to start learning how to edit video as well. @@SailingLearningByDoing
Fantastic video Vernon - absolutely loved it :)
Wise words legend!!!!
Thanks
What a journey, Vernon. Great words on the capitalist quagmire we wade around in. The footage and commentary have been awesome. It's been a real pleasure to go with you on your journey and looking forward to the next instalments. Kia kaha e hoa!
Thanks Tom
I absolutly love your videos!!!! well done
Thanks Maggie.

Nice channel and worth the watch for sure! Recommend this channel to anyone watching other sailing channels
Thanks Charley, glad you like my work. I would love it if you shared my channel
Thanks for sharing Vernon! Appreciate your honesty. Hope to cross paths some day!
Its a small world so chances are good:)
That goes for me too Vernon lol. I treasure your videos, giving me a window on your world xx
Great summary Vernon , Im really enjoying your journey, and I really enjoyed your podcast too thank you for sharing 👍
absolutely love every single one of your videos!!!! kind of wanting to see more days in your life videos but great work and keep going!
I will try!
so inspiring !!

Love your videos on sailing!! Have watched every one of them so far, looking forward to 2019! Your videos are no BS, which I love, and you really interact with the locals, which means a lot.
Thanks Nathan, glad you're liking them, cant wait to get back
Love it, man! Just very real -
I like you ways of thinking
Hi Vernon, catching up on your episodes.
Hope you enjoy!
amazing mate, thx
@@SailingLearningByDoing Thanks for the tip. I will give boats in Malaysia and Thailand a look. :) Cheers!
What one kiwi can do, another kiwi can do. inspirational video
Go for it
The channel is great.
Looking forward to more travels
Cheers and fairwinds from the @captains.chair
Thanks for watching, more coming soonish.
@@SailingLearningByDoing thanks for that, will try a mirco phone with the GoPro. 😁
Nice video, refreshingly honest with no bullshit. well done.
Cheers David
Wonderful Videos your living my life(
Thanks for the recap Vernon.
Hi Vernon,
Massive problem with this video - it is W A A A A A A A A Y too short mate. Cheers, Gavin & Amanda
PS - that attack on Dion sounded horrible.
Amazing 👍👍
Thanks 🤗
I dig your videos. Your living a cool life.

wow, what an awesome adventure! So cool! Thanks for sharing
Awesome stuff mate keep up the good adventures 🤙
Thanks mate.
Thanks 👍
Sailing Learning By Doing Hello Vernon from Dania Beach Fl. Where are you sailing now? Question got to ask you where do you get your shirts? Classic 👍🔥✌️

I really enjoyed your videos there interesting and adventures, very inspiring and informative, being an Australian as well you’re very relatable, I watch a lot of sailing videos I don’t have a job I don’t have much money but I’m happy, I’ve had a lot of adventures as well but it’s so good to see other people visiting there dreams so thank you 🙏 live it up while you can cheers 🍻
Cheers Peter, you seem to have a good positive attitude. I was actually born in Nz!
Thanks for all the work u put in to these videos it’s awesome I’ve been watching all your videos it certainly makes me feel like exploring I have a north shore 27 a bit small to be going where your going but I’m going to do a bit of a trip from Sydney to Brisbane soon keep up the good work look forward to your next inspiration thanks Bob
😊 kiwi a well you had me there lol 😂 no worries still love ya work won’t hold that against ya haha cheers
Haha, onya mate.
Really nice vid! Perfect lifestyle, snow and ocean... Just a weee tiny bit envious. Hahaha. Looking forward to the coming episodes... But where in Switzerland is this episode filmed?
Thanks! I filmed this high up on the glacier in Arolla while on a Splitboarding project.
Can you give us a rundown of how you became a photographer for Volcom? Where's the next destination for the sailing too? Indian Ocean? Kuril Islands?
If you're into podcasts then I gave a pretty good explanation of my work with Volcom in a recent one: wearelookingsideways.com/podcasts/073-vernon-deck
This coming season I'll be exploring the Raja Ampat region a bit more, might head up to the Philippines as well. Indian Ocean at some stage for sure but maybe not for 2-3 years yet. My goal is to sail around the world as SLOWLY as possible.
Loved it! Keep ip up man
Just being devils advocate: showing these places to the masses, such as Noro, Morovo Lagoon, and Ontong Java; do you think helps or could possibly hurt these incredible oasis' of humanity?
Good luck
Great job brother!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love your videos Vernon. You're a massive inspiration. What's the name of that app you use again for satellite imagery navigation? Heard you speak about it on the ocean sailing podcast as well.
Thanks man, happy you like the videos. That app is called Ovitalmap. Sorta tricky to figure out in the beginning but works great.
Mate i am about to head off from townsville directly to the Solomon Islands, then work my way up to new Ireland then along the top of papua then up to the Philippines. I will be sailing a fastback 32 catamaran.
Have you got any advice.
Wow, that will be awesome. Is PNG and The Solomons open again?
@@SailingLearningByDoing i believe so, doing it solo and heading off in a months time
@@michaeltrothe4945 as it looks right now you'll still need to quarantine in Honiara. I wouldn't do that as the anchorage there is pretty unsafe and I'd not want to leave my boat unattended for more than a few hours. Who know, maybe in a month it will be different🤞🏻
Thanks , I was planning on hitting the southern islands first and work my way up there. I will check with my army mates who will be up there then
Would you be able to list the navigation app that you used? You live in a nice, scenic place!
I use Navionics and Ovitel for the satellite images.
Hey Mate, I know your a pro photographer, but what did you film the thumbnail/sunset with? was it just a gopro and if so, which one???
Hey. Yeah it was 3-4 years ago now but I think it was a go-pro 5 maybe?
@@SailingLearningByDoing That's awesome. I don't have your pro eye or knowledge, but it still looked like some great colour/s. Thank you greatly.

Ahhh just heard you explain your photographer work. Stay safe and in wonderment 🍀👀🍀
Cheers Michael. Take care
I curious as to why you changed yachts from the one in the earlier videos as the first boat looked more like an ocean going yacht
Nice video bro
Very interesting review! I wonder what happened to the young guy.... he seemed so excited about the trip.... did he get bored? Depressed? Just curious. Cheers mate!
Hi Dan. Yeah it was a shame he didn't last. Pretty much as soon as we oct sight of Australia he went his bed and really didn't get out again for 8 days. Had some sort of mental meltdown. He came right when we arrived in Honiara but I sent him home as I didn't need that sort of crew.
27:08 You sure deserve 100k +++ subscribers.
Thanks Andreas, if it happens it happens but I'll keep putting them out regardless.
(Regardless of it being my own fault)
Even if I manage to sell both my last motorcycle and my car/truck I'll have to have an income every month..
This video is not long. It's perfect length it looks like
Spot On mate. I'm stuck in the rat race myself and dream of swapping it all for a sailboat and life on the water.
Start by dreaming then slowly make it happen
Cant see that that theory working out Ben.
PS if your just picking up an need a hand for sail north America Puget sound got a slip for ya
Thanks mate, maybe one day I'll be up that way, seems like an interesting place for sure.
(Granted, it's I who caused it.. )
But why should we work 12 months a year??
What does "bommy" mean?
Haha, I thought some people wouldn't know that word as its a pretty specific term. Its a coral tower or column. The water might be 5m deep but coral bommies grow up to the surface in some places. So if you drag anchor at night you cant see them, your depth sounder doesn't detect them and you are in trouble.
@@SailingLearningByDoingOkay cool Vernon! Thanks for explaining. No coral on the Canadian great lakes here, sadly.
Haha, nope. Makes it easy for navigation but a little less interesting for snorkling
So when you say hello and smile they don’t say hello back? Where were you? Here in Canada we say hello right back! Cheers! 👍 from 🇨🇦
In general people in the cities walk around actively avoiding eye contact or walk with their phone in front of their faces. Of course there are exceptions, small towns and communities.
Learning By Doing ... well a BIG hello from me! 😄👋.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Well thank you very much!☺️
1:46 old lady thought you were stalking here
Keep it up awesome stuff way more enjoyable to me than regular made up shit on tv👍👍
Thanks Chad
Hey Vernon very good vidéo like others you have done. Îm starting m’y Own travel at sea from france and i Start my TH-cam Channel. Hope you like it. Matohotasailing.
Thanks for watching, I'll watch out for you.
Western world is based on economics. "WE WANT YOUR MONEY". And that is power. That's one reason I want to escape this society. Dutch btw.
Exactly! And if you don't want to buy into that then you are classes as "lazy, worthless and bad for society"
Hydrogen peroxide, bubbles out the wound, must, plus diatomaceous dusting powder, cotton and sterile gauze.
Thanks for that Attila, I'll try to find some of those things next time I'm in a city.
This is so unfair and inhuman not to happy to say hello to outsiders.
What a blooming hypocrite
Thanks for clearing that up.
