  • Bupropion is an antidepressant and a smoking cessation aid. The drug has been tested in many other conditions, including ADHD, obesity, and seasonal affective disorder.
    It has multiple pharmacological mechanisms and it's still not entirely clear how bupropion works.
    Some recreational use has been reported, though the substance usually isn't very pleasant and it can be dangerous.

    I used to be on Wellbutrin. One time when I was on it, I smoked a small amount of weed before I took a shower. When I started to take the shower, I became convinced that the bathroom detached itself from the house and was hurling through space and I was freaked out that if I opened the door I would be sucked into space.

    • @TheDrugClassroom
      @TheDrugClassroom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      That may be your response. However, it's not the response most people have. Antidepressants don't help everyone and they may not even be the best first-line treatment in many cases. Yet they are a useful tool for a very large number of patients.

    • @TheDrugClassroom
      @TheDrugClassroom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Do you have any evidence that supports that view? It's an incredibly weak argument. Even very low-tier evidence can get published in the many journals that exist. A documentary in the absence of actual data isn't evidence.

    • @hypolaristic
      @hypolaristic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      There are so many similar stories out there... It either saves or takes someone's life. People can become a different person on alcohol too i.e. sober being the nicest person and become violent when drinking. Especially the first weeks on SSRI's are critical for risks like suicidal behavior.

    • @TheDrugClassroom
      @TheDrugClassroom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      It doesn't either "save or take someone's life". The vast majority of people have either no response, a beneficial response, or minor negative short-term effects. The rate of death or severe adverse effects is very low, which I also mentioned on the TDC site.

      @Mia-xs4pc Bupropion has considerably less intrusive side effects from my experience than SSRI (the main reason why I stopped my SSRI other than the fact it did not work). The only really problematic side effects to look out for are excessive stimulation, insomnia, SI, and seizures. I personally have experienced none of these and the only thing I get is a headache when the meds wear off (similar to a caffeine withdrawal) and it in fact even improves my sleep.

      @Maryam PTSD cannot be cured by medication but antidepressants may decrease many of the symptoms, depending also on which symptoms you suffer from most. Bupropion might be better than SSRI in PTSD, because of less side effects and improving not so much serotonine but dopamin.
      But PTSD can only be cured with traumatherapy, I would highly recommend IRRT ( Imagery Rescripting & Reprocessing Therapy) it took away all my panic attacks, flashbacks, intrusions, fear of knifes, constant fear of my loved ones dying, breathing problems, tachycardia, the sense of beeing stuck on the day the trauma ocurred... I finally felt alive and human again and was able to go through the pain, anger, dispair and sadness, let go and move on :) I think it is important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with that uses a method of reprocessing, eg. IRRT or EMDR. Medication may help make the current situation more bearable. I hope you get better soon! :)

    I just hit 4 weeks not smoking today (11/8/17) and I feel so much better and I still can't believe that I quit cold turkey so easily. My mood is much higher and I'm no longer depressed. I haven't felt so free from my own mind for many years. Zoloft never did this for me. Wellbutrin XL is the best anti-depressant for me. I take it first thing in the morning and it lifts my mood and energy without any negative side effects. I can’t tell I’ve even taken it, other than the fact that my energy is higher. I did lose my appetite (and about 10 lbs in the first 4 months) when I first started taking it but that effect has gradually decreased and now my appetite has fully returned. I quit smoking almost immediately upon beginning Wellbutrin since it made it impossible for me to get a nicotine high, so smoking was just frustrating and gross. Just 25 mg of Zoloft had me hallucinating and blacking out within 3 days (probably a severe adverse reaction) so if anyone else is having issues with SSRI’s, I’d definitely suggest trying bupropion. Umm but don’t snort it? 🤦‍♀️ Thanks for this video. I was curious how the drug worked.

A combination of Wellbutrin and coffee would give me major palpitations and tachycardia. Once I cut the caffeine down, those symptoms drastically decreased.
    The major positive that I can notice thus far is that it definitely increases my energy and ability to focus. I've gotten so much more stuff done and have increased my ability to focus on tasks much more effectively. Prior to this, my depression left it hard to get up off the couch to do anything other than the essentials (i.e. go to work, eat, do laundry when it was overflowing). Now I find myself looking for things to do.
    DO NOT TAKE THIS BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP. I typically take it about a half hour after I wake up. I work night shift so I take it at 5pm and then 6 hours later (I work 12 hour shifts). This seems to be the best for me. You'll have to mix it around and see what exactly works for you.
    Also, I've seen other videos where it says that your have decreased alcohol tolerance. YOU SHOULD NOT BE DRINKING WHILE TAKING WELLBUTRIN. It is contraindication completely and can cause an increase in seizure activity.
    It is honestly hard to tell if it's affected my depression. My anxiety is a bit worse on this but nothing that I feel I can't manage. What has really helped is therapy. TO NOTE: I began therapy 3 months before going on any antidepressant. So this has been supplemental to that. I feel that worked the best for me.

    I've been on 300mg for 2 and a half years. I was on celexa only for a long time before I finally added Bupropion. When I was on only celexa I would often get strong waves of depression and hopelessness. I was emotionally unstable and felt drained all the time. I was definitely lacking something in my brain and when I started taking Bupropion it felt like it replenished whatever I was missing. It took away the overbearing waves of emotional pain that used to overcome me all the time. That being said, although I consider it a huge help, I still get depressed sometimes but I've been able to pull myself out way easier ever since taking Bupropion I've never experienced any side effects other than dry mouth. I sleep fine but then again I've always struggled with chronic fatigue. I don't know if Bupropion made a huge difference in that regard but maybe that's because I'm just a naturally low energy person.

    I take bupropion for my depression and ADD. At first I took 150mg and the first week was horrible. I was maybe even more depressed than before but because my doctor told me that could happen and it would only last 1 week maximum I knew I wouldn't feel like that forever. After the first week I didn't notice much difference before I was taking bupropion. My doctor upped the dosis to 300mg and immediately after taking it the first time I felt like a whole different person. I can even sit still and focus on my work now and I feel better than I have in a long time.
    I also smoke weed to help me sleep and I had no bad experiences with it so far.

    The effect of Bupropion is doubled sided: Sometimes at lower doses it improves depression, but depending of the other medicines you are taking, it may come to undesired effects. Several times I became very euphoric, then, agitated, then, angry and finally agressive ( Which I never was ). I noticed that it was due to bupropion, and I had to calm down using bromazepam to control. Even using the same doses every day, the results may be unpredictable, so, I avoid it. This drug even when used for depression can both bring heaven and hell to earth. Take care with bupropion and never mix with other stimulants.

I get these microwavable chimichangas that I usually love, and eating it is like eating a piece of fuckin garbage. So basically the point is stimulants can cause some people to be repulsed by food. I use this, and its been a big help. It doesnt cure my depression, but it gives me relief from constant fatigue.
    Before I was taking 30mg of Adderall twice daily and not getting any help. Im now reducing my Adderall. I also realized, I had the will power to quit smoking cold turkey. I still had urges but it was so much easier to say "nah, I dont want to go get smokes".

      My doctor just prescribed me Wellbutrin XL 150mg I haven't started taking it yet. I'm taking 20mg of Adderall 3 times a day. I'm hoping that when I start taking the Wellbutrin I can cut down on how much Adderall I take. Thanks so much for your comment! I feel less depressed already! Also how soon before you noticed any effects from the Wellbutrin? If I may ask..

      Also congratulations on quitting smoking!! I quit smoking 5 years ago, the only thing that got me off smoking was using a vaporizer. Which I still use... when I started vaping it was before the juul or anything like that. I walk around with one of those big duchy box Mods. But it keeps me from going back to combustible cigarettes. Maybe Wellbutrin will help me quit vaping!

      Bupropion, varenicline, or nicotine replacement will generally be tried first, though there's some evidence for naltrexone.

      I've read tinnitus sometimes stops, sometimes it doesn't. It can continue after three months of discontinuation, if it's acute. But it may be associated with hearing loss, the 'neuronal' type, which means it cannot be solved with any type of surgery (but can be treated).

    I took Wellbutrin for ADHD and Anxiety- It made my libido skyrocket to the point where I was thinking about sex all day. Then extreme depression slowly started creeping in after about 3 months. My doctor then prescribed me Adderall which is like a limitless pill. I am currently taking Adderall IR 10MG x 3 daily.

      @Jen 1990 I'm on Vyvanse 60mg and an Adderall 10mg IR "rescue dose" if I need extended coverage. (Vyvanse only lasts for about 6hrs for me) It is literally like a limitless pill...

      It is heaven and hell. Led my family down a dark path just from getting it iv mixed with morphine and pushed through with saline while in the hospital. It was so good I was scared shitless and for good reason. Next 14 years were lockup, addiction, and bad decisions. Wonderful drug some people just don't need to know what it feels like; iv anyways. Much different orally.

    I usually take a pill with wellbutrin & dose. This month they gave me an oblong tablet with: I 71 printed on it. Is that form a recognized pill for Bupropion HCL XL 300 mg tablet?

    Question. Wondering if anyone has an explanation or can relate to me when I say Bupropion causes severe depression during the first few weeks taking it?
    I have ADHD and was prescribed Bupropion after talking with my doctor about alternate medications. I've never really been a depressed person, quite the opposite i'm usually very active and optimistic, but after 1 week taking Bupropion I suddenly have very severe depression.
    I was also prescribed Mirtazapine, which may or may not have some sort of interaction; Idunno.
    I get random fits of crying, feelings of paranoia, a sort of existential angst, I don't want to be around anybody, and these terrible feelings are so overwhelming that day-to-day life has become even harder than it was before I was even diagnosed. Again, never had any of these symptoms before. These have all appeared 1 week into taking 150mg Bupropion XL.

    • @noobsfearme
      @noobsfearme 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Inner Voice Appreciate the feedback. I didn't know it impacted your emotions as it did because it isn't like most ADs, or so I was told, but that first week included a lot of mental stress for me that otherwise wouldn't be there.
      It could have been Mirtazapine as well, Idunno.
      I ended up stopping just before week 3 because the side-effects were mostly gone by week 2, and i'm just an impatient person that got frustrated by the lack of results. That, and week 1 was pretty hell.

    why is it bad when taking tramadol?
    i was on an SSRI and tramadol, i was getting headaches once in a while during sex or any strong physical activity but i felt good. i felt more like myself, with more energy and focus.
    My psychiatrist switched it to Bupropion XL. first month i got 150mg daily, i felt tired all the time, sad, and just not good. she upped it to 300mg, i still feel tired and just not good.
    i wanna ask her to switch me back to SSRI cuz i cant stand this medication :/ even if i have to give up tramadol. i would give up tramadol in a heart beat. ill rather be in pain and happy than still be in pain but now im sad and tired all the time...
    anyone else feel tired, twichy, foggyness, no motivation.. etc with bupropion/ Wellbutrin ?

    I took this for years. stopped abruptly, and I feel like I'm going through withdrawal. My whole body is sore. I can't hardly hold down any food at all. Some other things but those are the 2 that really stick out. Has anyone else experience this, or maybe I'm just having the flu? I want to take one pill and see if it helps but I don't want to draw it out longer. Anyone?!?
