    Man, that temple with all its intricate carvings is a treasure. Just imagine bearing witness to a thousand years of history and still standing or the stories it could tell if it could talk...

      Old wooden structures are pretty rare in China too, special place!

      You can see wooden structures from Tang Dynasty in 山西, most famous are 佛光寺and 南禅寺. only four left from Tang Dynasty in China now, three of them located in 山西.

    Hey Nick, thanks for your video which brought back lots of happy memories. I lived in Zhangye for three years some 25 years ago. It was a much different place then - undeveloped, though still recognisable from your film. There were few tourists then, I saw maybe four or five in the whole of the time I was there. I was the only resident laowei within 500Km. Dafosi was free to enter and no-one bothered about photography. Anyway, thanks again and I shall watch your other videos about my old Gansu stamping ground.

    Rainbow mountain is spectacular for photography lovers. Pingshanhu is for adventures

    The city center definitely seems a lot more laidback vs the hustle and bustle in bigger cities. Makes me feel lazy from just watching it haha...

    ZhangYe aka GanZhou was the provincial capital of GanSu/LiangZhou historically, until the founding of Ming dynasty, a royal noble prince: Zhu Yang, 14th son of Zhu YuanZhang were granted king of Su(GanSu) wanted to conceal his ambition & influence in front of his royal nephew by petition the Imperial court to move him to a less significant LanZhou that rose into the modern provincial capital of GanSu

    Zhangye is a must go destination in Gansu. It is on the last stop for anyone who does a round tour from Xining. From Xining, there are two options available for those who decide to charter a car with or without driver, the long circle or the short circle, either way it is going to end in Zhangye before returning to Xining. As usual, thanks for sharing this awesome video.

      My high speed train from Lanzhou went via Xining - i'll head to Xining sometime soon i think, still looking into doing a bike ride around Qinghai Lake

    Gangsu is an underrated province. It is probably the most diversified province in China in term of cultural, people, climate and geography.

    Several years ago we did visit the DaFoSi and saw the impressive reclining Budha statue. The temple was first built over 900 years ago and remains a vibrant Buddhism temple and tourist attraction.

    Hexi corridor was named because it is the narrow strap to Xiyu, today's Xinjiang. Xiyu belongs to Han Dynasty. In the North, it was xiongnu and south was Qiang. So hexi was the key area to control Xiyu.

    zhangye is named by hangwu emperor in han dynasty(he named 4 cities at once in gansu along the hexizoulang), its name stays the same for more than 2 thousand years, same as the other three cities in the same region, they were written on history books from 2000 years ago

      Didn't really see any creepy crawlies, just a few camels :D Actually this place was Pingshan Hu, not the rainbow mountains. Very Very beautiful though!

      That’s a pity. It’s a spectacular place only 1 hour away from the city. And less than 4 hour hike to the glacier! Absolutely great place!

    Do you consider exploring inner Mongolia? There are big and lush grasslands and Not a lot of people are covering that part of China. It is a vast area with a lot of Geographic diversities too

    Yeah, the names of the towns in Hexi corridor such as Zhangye, Jiuquan,Dunhuang are from that emperor 2 thousand years ago and never changed. Yanni has a musical masterpiece for Hexi Corridor

      Yeh, same as the Mogao grottoes in Dunhuang. Some things you just have to travel and see for yourself! The Buddha was special though, just huge, filled the temple.

    I enjoyed Pingshanhu back in the early 80's. As a Canadian though, it's much too dangerous to visit China now.
