Man THIS guy was so much more than a lead guitar monster. He was cut from the cloth of Edison and all the great inventors. He was broke and didn’t have money for gear and had to resort to tinkering with what he was able to obtain. When he got a Marshall he experimented with the variac and other things. He ruined pickups by dipping them in wax. You would think someone wirhout money would be terrified to rip open a Marshall or take pickups out of a guitar for fear of completely destroying the equipment and not being able to financially replace it. Ed was one a kind and we were blessed to have him for so many reasons.
The modern day Beethoven! We miss you Ed. Your boy is kicking ass! EVH/WVH! ✊🏽

The stories of many guitarists that asked to play through Eddie's rig and were allowed all end up saying, " It still sounded like me."
Yep. Same with Gilmore, his guitar tech said you could give him a ukulele and he would still have the feel. It's in the fingers.

He's making apologies for something he doesn't need to apologize for. He changed the guitar and music landscape forever. But he always took heavy criticism for his music being too busy and not soulful enough. He was rejected by a lot of prominent guitarists that came before him and probably the one that hurt the most for him was Eric Clapton, which was a boyhood hero for him. He talked about Clapton in early interviews. Once he heard and felt the rejection he never really talked about him again. So many times Ed's playing was written off as gimmicks. Which i think played a role in him wanting to write more serious music with keyboards and Roth leaving the band over creative differences. Ed is sort of reconning things here. Again, he shouldn't feel like he had to but EVH had some of the best gear a teenager could hope to have in the early 70's. His dad even went in debt and bought him a Les Paul when he was around 16 and he had a Marshall stack. Marshalls were hard enough to get for working musicians and he had one as a teenager! EVH wrote the music and played it like he wanted to play it. Dude was a major inspiration for me. The people who knew EVH very well said he was a pretty shy guy and i think we can see that here. No apology necessary. Edward, you made beautiful music. All of those guys were jealous of your talent.

Couldn't afford much more....if you had a MXR Distorion you were rich. A Les Paul? No effing way. Those didn't come till you're 19 or 20. Mine came at 50 when my Mom died and left me couple bucks❤🙏
This is part of why I praise Eddie. Make do with what ya got. You don’t need high end gear to sound good.
