Why Dragging a Walleye is Costing You fish in Your Trolling Spread...

  • If you troll on Lake Erie or any lake with planer boards, then you more than likely have found yourself dragging a fish you did not know was hooked from time to time.
    Our underwater trolling camera taught us that this fish being dragged may be costing you fish on your other boards.
    We have been recording the last 2 season underwater fish strikes on Lake Erie and one thing we learned was just how loud the line can be amplified underwater with any tension on it from a fighting fish. Those sounds are not helping your other lures attract fish... Watch the videos and check any of boards that you suspect may have a fish ASAP!

    Just a thought, but it seems to me that the angle of the camera may be altered just a bit when not running true (when dragging a fish) causing the water to flow over the microphone pick-up at a slightly
    different angle, which may be causing the loud noise that we can hear on audio, but not necessarily a noise that is transmitted into the water column

      @DirschOnTheWater  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah good thought … another gentlemen mentioned that idea and we will test it some more coming up the audio mainly comes from the line tension from what we can tell slicing through the water like a guitar string. One thing is for sure… the commotion of a fish being hooked is all fish and lure and line. That we know does not help on fish like sheephead left in the water. I huge question still remains about distressed fish and if they emit anything. That other fish pic up on. Fun stuff to sort through and analyze. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope to see you in the water coming up this Fall!

      @DirschOnTheWater Maybe throw a dipsy on the end, let it pull hard to the side and see what the audio is like. One thing is for sure, if I'm dragging fish, I'm usually dragging two....lol

    Lately if I get all 10 rods out and I don’t have fish signs I immediately start running through the gear from where I started and more often than not it’s exactly what’s happening we’re dragging a 14 inch walleye sometimes as many as 4or 5 . There are too many fish out there right now and they’re hungry I don’t like to see lures in the water for more than 20 minutes and 30 minutes tops without checking. Great video.

      @@mikeyd5969 I believe that is spot on . We can only fish 7 rods with the 3 of us and not making a mess in my boat . That is where we are comfortable and effective.
      Yesterday we were tournament fishing and the bite was hot. We went through the fish on my fish finder… thought we might have had a bite but did not check it despite my own video. 15 minutes goes by and I was like guys something is wrong…. We had 2 on each side that hit about the same time and were dragging. 🤦🏻‍♂️ the other three rods went ice cold. We needed to go back and watch our own video.

    One idea i had and am going to try is to add more spring holes on my planner board. What usually happens is the tattle flag is either too tight or to loose. Just got the idea my last trip out, so gonna give it a shot and see if it helps detect those draggers and swimmers better

    Is the camera in line/ attached to the leader and lure?

    • @DirschOnTheWater
      @DirschOnTheWater  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@livebig247 we attach it to a swivel at the end of braided line coming from the reel. On the end of the camera there is an eyelet we put another pin and swivel and tie a 3 foot mono leader that is lighter than the braid. If the lure gets hooked on the bottom( which has happened ) we want the mono leader to break…. Not the braid. Camera is a couple hundred dollars and that would get expensive on a regular basis. We only use this camera on a spinning reel for now to be nimble with it and quick if we have a problem we can open the bail and maneuver to the camera. In deep water it is a no issue unless you are dropping down 50 feet.

Lake Erie doesn’t have a ton of visibility as you move off shore and the closer we put it to the lure the better we were at seeing the fish. It’s a real touchy scenario. @@jackrussell8672 good question …. Sound can travel thousands of miles underwater because water particles carry sound waves better than air, allowing them to retain their energy longer. The sound channel, an area in the ocean where sound waves refract up and down, also helps sound travel long distances without losing much energy. ( copied and pasted the findings )

      No offense taken. Seclusion is great. We are definitely not a charter. We are just private fisherman who really do enjoy the lake. I used to stand on the front of my boat and cast for hours a day and now I’ve come to enjoy trolling and the science of it, and getting the lures at the right depth to catch the fish it’s become somewhat of a passion to understand how all that works together to catch a big fish. You have proved nothing to that theory . You`re connecting the leader to a metal rod connected to a plastic case with a mic in it which will pick up any kind of vibrations making it sound horrible under drag from a fish . You have shown no research to what is happening with out a camera attached.

      I’m sorry you have a different expectation of proof of the concept that dragging fish impacts your spread. I liked your idea on proving it without a camera. I am all ears on how you would propose doing that. I am not being snarky either, what do you propose to juxtapose what I have presented? I have seen some of your water wolf footage. Do you have another way to record ? What was your idea?
      What is not in dispute from the videos is the commotion that a hooked fish creates underwater is impactful to the environment around it on Lake Erie. The videos we have recorded over and over have shown the amount of disturbance in the water and other fish moving away from the disturbance not like mahi mahi do from my days living the Florida Keys where a hooked fish attracts.
      They say critics can make us better and feedback is a gift. I always like to say give good gifts.
      Convinced or not my recommendation to fisherman stands and that their assumptions about fish being dragged has a negative impact on nearby lures. When in doubt check it then is our learning. The commotion is not luring more fish in.
      Thanks for watching and commenting. Would love to learn from your insights on the water as record more .
