    Thank you for this method. I’ve tried to catch walleye with repeatability every way possible. Three weeks ago I stumbled on your video, and went and bought 2 f7 flatfish and rigged up like you showed. In 6 trips I have boated 25 keepers here in Indiana. Never in my 65 yrs. have I had that much fun. Let’s mention that this rig also catches all the different fish in the lake. Thanks again, gone fishin..

    Love it.... My dad ran that rig for years here in Michigan.... Really works well in the spring time in small Rivers that walleyes come up to spawn.... Same set up but he ran a small treble then to a Snell the leader of the flat fish was about 8-10" of 12-14lb trilene and a good ball bearing swivel.

    This is actually pretty genius. With a regular walleye worm harness you need a bottom bouncer, which is great for deep water. But when they're in the shallow water I'm restricted to lures and spoons, which work great but only when they're aggressive. Definitely going to give this a try!!

    I'm going to ask the dumb question I guess lol what size death hook do you generally run and do you prefer the ones with the built in swivel? Also what lb Floro? Love your channel. Learning new things with every video. Thanks much. God Bless. Northern lower Michigan here. Ogemaw Co.

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I'm remembering correctly, I usually run a size 2, 4 or 6. I like to go on the smaller side if there are nice panfish around. I'm kind of back and forth on the swivel, because I do like to thread my crawler up over the eye of the hook. The bulk of the eye, knot and tag end of the line help hold the crawler in place. If you thread up over the swivel it kind of defeats the purpose of the swivel. But with just a couple of inches of line behind the flatfish, the swivel kind probably do have more action if you don't thread too far up the hook. So the short answer is I'm still experimenting. I go with 20lb floro. I don't see a reason to go any lighter. Thanks for watching, KPO.

    • @kevinkev500

      James, that "hook" is actually a handle designed for one handed netting. If you look at the vid again, imagine my hand on the black part and the hook part on my fore arm. It's pretty cool if you're the only one in the boat. The only thing I saw on the net was "Rivers and Lakes". Not sure if it's the company or the model. Thanks for the question. KPO

    I like the premise. I'll be trying it on a large, shallow river, slow to moderate current, 1 1/4 oz in-line sinker, 36" leader to the F7, 6" leader to the #1 slow death hook w/crawler or leech. Slow trolling up and downstream, 1mph or less. My question is does the flatfish have a typical diving depth or will it run higher than the sinker?

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gerald, I'm sure different colors work better than others, but just like other lures that depends on many things; water clarity, fishing during the day/night, local walleye menu. I usually stick to the rules of thumb; stained water bright colors (chartreuse, firetiger or something that glows) clear water more natural colors (silver, white) although white has been good for me in all types of water. Either way that crawler looks like a crawler. Thanks for the comment and let me know how it works out for you, KPO.

    Going to be drift fishing from a head boat on Lake Erie in a couple days. Would like to try this if crawler harnesses not working. Usually fishing 15’-25’ deep this time of year I’d guess. Would you use the same inline weight (1 oz or so) I’m using for the crawler harness or use a bottom bouncer?

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Same weights should be fine. But you will be trolling slower with the flatfish. That might cause them to run deeper than expected. If the flatfish are trolled too fast they just turn upside down or sideways. Let me know how it works out.

The boat crew were initially recommending crawler harnesses which did ok. I don’t think I got any bites on the flatfish setup, but, as he said, we may have been drifting too fast! Just came from a walleye trip up in northern Ontario about 2 weeks ago. We portage into outback lakes(most people do not like too walk a 1 1/2 mile portage). These lakes are not stocked, all natural reproduction. Trolled using spinner and worm combo such as in your video. Once the walleye were found, we would drift with a white jig head and worm combo. Just killed em. Got a lot of fish in the slot limit but kept a lot of good eaters. Picked up a couple of over 24 inchers but put em back to breed. We are going back in August and I will try your set-up. The only thing that sucked about the trip was: Black flies, Mosquitos and runnin out of beer.

    Good video. The "industry" is crooked. I'm talking about the manufacturers and those promoting them. There are many very good lures that, suddenly, are not good anymore. This according to them. Yes, there are new lures that are very good and the technology helps with that. But how come some lures like the flatfish, and the daredevil are not good lures anymore today? They still are and you will catch fish with those. Thank you for this video because you're also addressing this very important point I'm talking about.

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, thanks for adding that in. One thing to consider is that many "Pros" really need to move the needle of selling a product. So many great ways to catch fish involve live bait. Most live bait techniques don't sell products. So when a "Pro" tells you this or that is the best way to catch a walleye/bass, this "Pro" may have other motivations than just helping you catch more fish.

      Well, I usually add a little weight to the set-up (1/8 oz split shot). That along with the crawler makes the Flatfish sink very slowly. So now my depth is very speed dependent. If I am trolling, I might be letting out 100 feet to get down 4 feet. If I am wind drifting (slower) it might be 50 feet out to get 4 feet down. When I wind drift, I am always experimenting because the speed is never exactly the same. Thanks for watching, KPO.
