    ►WHAT'S IN THIS DOG TRAINING VIDEO:
    Taking your reactive dog for walks in new areas can be stressful! I want to take you along on this walk with Louie, a reactive dog. We go a new route that's popular with other dogs, so I'll show you how I handle his increased pulling AND how I work on his reactivity to dogs.
    *Why a collar? I prefer harnesses for leash training to protect the dogs neck, but I also try to respect client preference.

    These unedited videos are so helpful and also encouraging!! I love the narrations that you do explaining choices, body language etc, very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing these and I LOVE how much you talk to him on your walks, I'm the same with my pups, I can't help myself so it warms my heart to hear you with Louie🥰

      Thanks! I'm so glad you talk to your dog too 😊 I always find it so strange when people essentially ignore their dogs on walks 😂 Plus: dogs LOVE it & it helps keep them engaged (which helps the training). I'm going to be releasing more unedited Louie walks in the next couple months as well as some unedited reactivity training with other clients!

      Yeah, it wasn't great. I'm used to being trolled by people that prefer aversive training methods, but getting a nasty message from someone "on the same side as me" felt extra bad! Thank you for the kind words though 🙃
      I loooved filming this series with Louie and watching him change. It's one thing in person, but even for myself it's neat to look back on the video clips and how far he came. Hopefully end of May-ish once I get other planned reactivity content out the Louie series will come back & get wrapped up. I never showed his "finale"!

    I have hypermobile eds, so leash pulling is very painful for me and causes dislocations. You have no Idea what it means to me to be able to find methods without corrections to stop and prevent leash pulling I was beginning to think I would have to use a prong collar to save my joints but after using your techniques within two walks there was major improvement thank you so much for these videos. I can finally walk my GSD by myself again. ❤❤❤

    I just want to say thank you. I recently became the owner of a almost 7 month old Rottweiler girl puppy who is very reactive and just now learning to walk on leash. After watching your videos earlier today I decided that on our quick bathroom leash walk I'd try the rewards and had some treats in pocket "just in case" we bumped into this angry neighbor whose complained about her breed. No neighbor thankfully ...but instead a mom and toddler. I decided to quickly go back inside but my keys fell out of reach, so I desperately used the treats and to my pleasant surprise she (my pup) stayed focused on the treats and ignored the mom and baby who took a while to pass us. I'm excited to continue theses methods, thank you so much!

I'd rather focus on building a solid base of skills THEN worry about the finesse 🙂

      Thanks, I’m so glad to hear they’re helpful! I’ve been filming some unedited sessions with other reactivity clients that I’m excited to share too. Every dog is so different!
      For my tutorials I REALLY like showing the process with an untrained dog, and since I unfortunately didn’t film teaching Louie to fix his leash, I didn’t want to demo it with him. However, Brooks (dog I have a “drop” tutorial with) guardians agreed to let me film it with her 😊 So I’m going to have a tutorial out for that soon! It’s a personal pet peeve of mine to fix a dogs leash & it’s super easy to teach them to do it themselves 😊

    Hi it’s Katie from Grateful Sun Tarot. I don’t know how I show up on TH-cam. I am rather technologically challenged!!😂. Great video thank you. I’ve been trying to get Daisy to be less reactive to other dogs. She is getting a little better not reacting to people as much. Quick question though. When I give her treats when she is tense or trying not to react she is quite grabby. How do I get her to be more gentle taking the treats. She is so gentle taking them at home when she’s not reacting to anything. It’s not like she’s trying to bite me it’s more of a grab and go thing if that makes sense.

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Katie! Nice to see your name on this platform 🙂 Normally for teaching dogs to take treats more gently, I like starting with ~ 1:32 of this video th-cam.com/video/umt0jF9MHeI/w-d-xo.html where I'm working on un-cued impulse control. Essentially if they try to take it too roughly, they lose access. However in your case, I'd also say that taking treats too roughly can be a sign they're close to threshold and possibly need a bit more space from their trigger during training when possible!

    I love these unedited videos! Thank you! May I ask what treats you use for Louie?

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And of course 😊 I always bring two kinds: a standard treat and something more epic for the reactivity training/difficult settings.
      I also change up what I use in those categories to keep it interesting, and also depends on what other clients I’m seeing that day & allergies (why you’ll sometimes see that certain things are in plastic baggies in the treat pouch).
      1. Standard dog treats with Louie I’ve used: Beef liver (Costco), chicken sticks (Costco), and dried cod (from Homes Alive petstore). The cod he loved but the smell almost killed me, so I’d never buy it again 😂
      2. For the epic reward, I usually use real meat that I cook. Louie’s gotten both pork chops and ground beef (he prefers ground beef).

    2:28 I love this small little detail: It shows how force free training is more complex than "stuffing treats down a dog's throat". It's a simple example of how you can quickly alter a dog's behavior without using punishment, force, or intimidation. Sure, it's not long term behavior change necessarily, but a lot of people would insist on punishing the dog somehow in that moment, when they're doing nothing wrong, it's just a preference thing for us :). So...anyway lol, awesome detail!

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I completely agree. A vast amount of training is simply trying to get the dog to act in our preferred ways rather than them *actually* doing anything "bad". I don't believe trying to sculpt an animal to our preferences warrants anything aversive, ever! (Plus, force free works. Don't be an unnecessary jerk haha)

    • @kat200214
      @kat200214 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@happyhoundsdogtraining Absolutely 100% agreed!! Oh, I have a question for you, it's just an honest question and not meant to come across as insulting or critical, but why not have a bit of a longer leash on Louis? Perhaps something like 8-10ft would make leash training a bit easier for both of you, but perhaps not. The leash you currently have on him just seems a bit short for a species that naturally walks faster than us, and for a species that loves to follow their nose haha!

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zero insult taken! I'm always happy to have questions. I mentioned this briefly in the video, but Louie didn't get upgraded to an 8 ft leash until week 3. His guardian originally walked him on a ~ 3ft leash when we met and struggled to "control" him (he's bigger & stronger than he looks in these videos haha). Despite my reassurances that it would make things EASIER if we upgrade his leash, she was still worried. So we compromised with 6 ft leash at first, and once she saw the improvement, we went to an 8 🙂

    I also love letting my 7 month old puppy (Jack Russel Terrier/mix) sniff a lot and explore the world but the problem is that she's mainly sniffing to look for food droppings and it's very difficult for her to resist it. There's lots of everything around my residential complex from bread, bones, meat...) and sometimes people would even set up poisons, which I'm terrified of. We work on "leave it" and "drop" commands and they sometimes work, sometimes not as she's still learning. But often by the time she sniffs something out it's already in her mouth before I even realise as it is apparent to her nose but not the human eye! Any advice? Thank you, love your vids!

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oof, I'd be scared of the poisons too. That's awful that people are doing that! Have you used my tutorials for leave it and drop? I teach "drop" a bit differently than most people because I want an IMMEDIATE response, so I'll link that tutorial here if you haven't watched it: th-cam.com/video/4sDCPXcZkEM/w-d-xo.html. I'm also going to link a tutorial for how I train an advanced leave it that works on walks: th-cam.com/video/M1UvdL4-3B8/w-d-xo.html. If your dog finds something super interesting on the walk and they struggle to listen to your cueing, I often suggest bringing that item home (use a poop bag to carry it if it's gross) so you can practice with it in those containers!

    And how do you define pulling at the very beginning when their pull is BIG and usually constant?
    I foster so my dogs have often been conditioned to pull.

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Haha I know what you mean; some dogs ALWAYS seem to have leash tension. Louie is about 70 pounds, so I could always "feel him on the leash", especially at the start. You'll notice many times in the Louie series I get lazy and hold the leash with just a couple fingers.... I'd define "pulling" as any level of tension where it would be uncomfortable to do that (hold the leash with a couple fingers). To be clear- I'm NOT suggesting holding the leash with one finger 😂 More so just mean lack of pulling would mean that you COULD. If I felt like I needed to grip the leash with my whole hand = that's pulling.

      Have you watched this video about the exercise I used to help manage Louie's threshold as we went outside? th-cam.com/video/st-ferrvuhs/w-d-xo.html. Other things to keep in mind: if sound bothers her, it's definitely worth doing some sound conditioning (example traffic noises & such): th-cam.com/video/4mMF_XAX2b4/w-d-xo.html. It's made a massive difference for some reactive dogs I've worked with. Last suggestion is depending on your living situation, walking her LESS and letting her stress hormones truly stabilize between walks can also be helpful 🙂

    Do Louie’s guardians take him on walks outside of your training sessions? Is consistency of the cues between yourself and his guardians a challenge?

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oooh I love this question, and no one has asked it yet on any of Louie's videos! 🙂 His guardian did walk him in between my sessions, yes. She watched what I'd filmed so that she could match my cues & steps for teaching him to walk without leash tension, but she did switch gear ~ 1 week later than me each time due to worries about control. Also, during the time I filmed with him she mostly used treat scatters or kong hand to distract him if there was dogs. She wasn't comfortable at first working on his reactivity, so she just focused on leash skills and reactivity management. Now that I've wrapped up filming though she is continuing his reactivity training & he's doing so well 😊
