    I’ve watched almost all of the Louie videos, read the Prey Drive book and watched many of the other videos.
    Maya (reactive/very bad walking on leash) had the best walk we’ve ever had this morning!! Yay!!
    I had been working in my yard first for a week and today we did a short walk in our relatively quiet neighborhood.
    Using a longer leash and higher value treats, she was great at check ins, name recall and being overall calmer. One bunny she noticed in a yard and she pulled. we stopped and I walked my hands up the leash!! Perfect.
    One question. She is very reactive to bikes, motorized bikes and motorcycles. They come and go so quickly, how can I help her with that.
    Thank you for helping us have such a lovely walk today!!

      Wow, best walk ever is AMAZING 👏 So happy to help!
      I actually have an upcoming video featuring my client Fynn and his extreme reactivity to skateboards which I think would help you. In general though, it's all about working the dog under threshold (watch this: th-cam.com/video/G1UVxRIBMEs/w-d-xo.html). I would purposely go to a spot where you're likely to see bikes, start at a large distance, and reward her for watching them but staying calm. Over time, get closer and closer 🙂

    THank you for all your helpful training postings. our newest dog is a 7 month old puppy (all ready 40 lbs)- some kind of Shepard, English setter mutt mix. Her name is Lucy. She is so smart. She has figured out to come back to my side whenever she feels like a treat! and generally can be good when nothing else is around, but she is SUPER friendly (other side or kind of reactivity) as she wants to meet everyone and every dog. She seems highly impulsive, as if she just can't stop herself in those situations. That is when her pulling is the worse. I will start trying more of your tips! Thank you again. I work at a rescue so there's immediately tons of stress and noise the second the dog leaves, plus a lot of the dogs don't get as much exercise as they need. in this case would you recommend just doing the 'kong hand' until we can get to quieter area?

      When you're leaving the rescue and the dog is quite stimulated, can they see other dogs? Or mostly just noise? Kong hand is great if the stimulus is viewable, and I also like adding this exercise (th-cam.com/video/st-ferrvuhs/w-d-xo.html ) to settle the dog settle & focus on you if it's simply loud!

    Hi I follow you on instagram and am so grateful for your content! I think those dogs may be border collie, husky, beagle, and american pitbull terrier. They are cute whatever they are! I have a rescue dog named Harry. He's estimated to be 4 years old. We've had him a little over a year. He was fostered with multiple dogs (for a few months) in two homes but we learned quickly that he was reactive so I'm not sure why these behaviors were not shown before. He sees a vet behaviorist and we are still trying to find the right medication for him (it's been almost a year of trialing new meds). He was diagnosed with fear based reactivity to people and dogs. I feel like I have made no progress with him for the past year and it's been very disheartening. My main issue is that I feel like Harry goes over threshold so easily even with a lot of distance. So training has been very hard because you are supposed to do it when they are under threshold. I am looking forward to your reactivity videos.

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining

      Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind feedback 🙂 I find on walks I try to make guesses about Louie's breed, then I go back and see his brother Diesel and am unsure again. 😂They're definitely adorable though!
      Louie also has fear based reactivity, so I think you'll find his sessions helpful. One of the things I'm going to show/discuss on his unedited walks is how I can tell when he's ramping up even when there's nothing around and how I bring him back to focus/a more calm state. I find a lot of my reactivity clients that have those huge explosions (even from a far distance) have a dog that's been teetering near threshold for awhile already and that trigger just pushed them over the edge.

    Going to start using these things tomorrow morning. I had to get a waist belt leash and I've had to walk them separately - really taking a toll on my time and feet! - because I can't manage my boys on walks (1.5 year old and 9 month old St Bernards). Really hoping this helps. I would love to be able to take them for walks in the woods but right now they'd kill me with their pulling if I did. We're definitely not at this stage yet but anticipating success...do you have any videos or suggestions on how to walk two dogs simultaneously without them getting tangled?

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Separating them for walks can feel like such a hassle, but it really is worth it during training (especially with large dogs)! Louie's guardian needed to walk him & his brother Diesel separately while working on Louie's leash skills & reactivity.
      I don't have any video's walking two together yet, but one thing I DO suggest is picking a different training side for each dog & only rewarding them on that side. So for example, Louie would be rewarded on my left side & Diesel would be rewarded on my right. Even if you just want to focus on loose leash rather than heeling, I'd watch this video: th-cam.com/video/4fUVXntWPOM/w-d-xo.html and add in the indoor/yard practice to build a reinforcement history for their respective sides.
      Also, if you're still struggling with pulling during loose leash walking, I'd also suggest watching this video for more advanced tips: th-cam.com/video/r57ovJpsm8M/w-d-xo.html

    We recently adopted 2 rescue dogs who were a bonded pair. They were both pullers but the big one (32 lbs) is getting better. The little one (13 lbs) is still pretty bad and pulls practically the whole time. They are both very reactive to other dogs. We have a hard time training them because they distract each other and always want to be in front of the other. Do you have any helpful hints? We tried walking them separately (my husband and I) but they both get pretty upset.

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Congratulations on the new dogs, and good on you for rescuing dogs with some behaviour struggles! My suggestion would definitely be to walk/train them independently until they’re both semi-proficient. Since they get upset when separated, I’d focus on that first however! Build enjoyment to going outside with you individually, THEN work on leash training. I’d keep sessions really short for a week, and I suggest trying these to activities when you first go outside:
      Use a pattern game like this to really engage the dog as you leave the house: th-cam.com/video/st-ferrvuhs/w-d-xo.html
      And then play a simple “recall” game like this for ~10 minutes: th-cam.com/video/E1bY5ZeUxXQ/w-d-xo.html

    Oh, I love this very much
    I’m going to try this with my dog who is a Border Collie and he’s very over aroused everything sets this little dog off and does not work on a leash at all and when I try to use food, it doesn’t calm him and actually revs him up, and he bites at my hand very hard to get out the food so I don’t know if that’s a good idea for this dog, but I may try it
    As two dogs that are combination of different breeds, did you know that there could be more than one father?

      If you find he’s getting bitey for treats he might be pretty close to threshold! You’ll see in my unedited video of Louie (that Ill post this week) he gets much more grabby with treats when he’s overstimulated versus calm. There’s a few things I do to help improve that!

    HI! I just started following you in IG. Where was this video 2 years ago ?!? LOL I have a rescue mix breed, female. Luna is her name, she is 2 years old. We were told she was a chihuahua dachshund but after her going from 10-40lbs (we were told she would be no more than 15 lbs) we did a DNA test, she is Boxer, Cattle Dog & Chihuahua. My only struggle with her is sniffing. I understand letting her sniff and I do let her. She is the dog that will be walking focused then instantly turn back or to the side and pull to get to what she wants to sniff or when I do let her sniff she wont stop to continue the walk. She used to be wonderful with returning when I say her name but recently she's decided she doesn't need to respond to me anymore and wont look at me. We walk every single day (weather permitting) at least 2 miles, longer on the weekends. I've been trying to only allow her to sniff as a reward because most times when she pulls to sniff what she wants it gets her into trouble, its likely something that will end up in her mouth YUCK! 2 months ago we just adopted another pup, a Chihuahua mix (16lbs at the moment, we will DNA test one day) I will check out the rest of your videos and get our new pup Minnie on the right track :) and hopefully I can get Luna back on track. I wonder is it her age, 2 years old, that shes acting out not wanting to listen like she used too. ok this was long, sorry about that! thank you for listening and I look forward to following a long. Great video!

      Welcome to my channel! The "where was this video 2 years ago?" made me laugh 😂 Better now than never? Haha. That's QUITE the shift in breed expectations, but I bet she's adorable! I want to say a few things about your question. 1) Sometimes if we try to limit something we make it MORE valuable, and therefore more difficult to grab attention from. Limiting sniffing is likely increasing the value when she does finally get to sniff. Just something to think about! 2) As a training exercise for grabbing attention after a sniff I strongly encourage you to practice that up/down game I mentioned with distance. Essentially, drop a treat into the grass (encouraging the sniff) then back up ~10 feet and try to say your dogs name right after they've found the treat. When she glances in your direction, present that treat for her to come get. It helps build the behaviour of sniffing then re-orientating focus back to you! 3) For gross things that you don't want her to get I always recommend training a solid "leave it" cue. In an upcoming video of Louie he finds a dead bird and I realize that he doesn't know leave it lol. My tutorial for teaching the cue is here: th-cam.com/video/umt0jF9MHeI/w-d-xo.html 4) I like putting two different kinds of leash walking on cue. For me "ok" means loose leash/go wherever you want/sniff as much as you want. "Heel" means walk my pace, by my side, without breaks. It IS intentionally strict because I typically only use it when I really need to get somewhere. If clients are feeling frustrated with sniffing because there's moments they just want to walk rather than the stop & go I encourage training both cues so your dog isn't left guessing which "version" you want. . This tutorial will show you how! th-cam.com/video/4fUVXntWPOM/w-d-xo.html

      Smart pup! 😂 If it’s a pretty easy situation/skill, I just wouldn’t give in. Offer that lower value reward a few times in row so that your dog understands that’s all that’s coming for now 😂 If they refuse the reward, no big deal. Just carry on with your walk! Alternatively, as silly as it sounds, try pre-mixing a few pieces of cheese into the salmon treats so there’s a *hint* of cheese flavour on those too.

    Owner of Poppy, a 2 year old working-line German Shepherd. She is amazing, knows all her words and is very very smart. But..... pulls on her leash and is super reactive to other dogs. It's my fault. Even as a pup I took her to the dog park to play. Thought I was doing the right thing to socialise her but now when she sees another dog, she wants to play and jump all over them. But she's a German Shepherd and so other dog owners see a German Shepherd that seems to want to rip their dog to bits. I need to teach her that on the leash is work time, off the leash is play time. You videos look very promising. First thing we shall address is her leash skills. Then her reactivity. I'll let you know how we go.

    • @happyhoundsdogtraining
      @happyhoundsdogtraining  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Leash skills are an INCREDIBLY important part of reactivity training, so it's smart to start there! Try not to blame yourself for her reactivity. We can only do the best with what we know at the time, and there's SO much advice out there telling dog guardians to prioritize socialization.I'm actually filming a socialization video with a young puppy right now because I wanted to talk about how to build positive associations without teaching our dogs that they are going to meet every person & dog they see 🙂 I'd love updates about how your progress goes during training!

    Came back to this video to see if there’s anything else I can try - do you have any extra tips for a super excitable 1.5yo border collie who walks well on leash in familiar areas, but when we go somewhere new she starts pulling like a steam train because she can’t wait to explore and I’m walking too slowly for her liking (ie. at a brisk human pace rather than at 100kmph)? It’s not that she pulls now and then to get to a particular smell, she just pulls the entire time because she wants us to go faster. I’ve tried calling her name and the up/down game and she does respond and come back, but then she just immediately goes back to pulling every time. I’ve also tried stopping and only moving again once the leash is slack and keeping that up for the whole walk, but it didn’t make a difference. What am I doing wrong? 😭 Is there anything else I can try?

      Hey! Great question. I wish you asked it in about 2 weeks because I’m filming with a client this week that I call my “whiplash client”. 😂 He pulls, takes a treat for his name, then immediately adds leash pressure again. I’m going to show three things I do to change that quickly, so stay tuned for that video! But, I’ll write them out here too ☺️
      1. As soon as you get to a new area, I’d add in 5 minutes of this game BEFORE you start your walk. It’s very simple, but it’s extraordinary at teaching your dog to reorient back to you/check in. When dogs get to new areas they’re often quite stimulated at first, so this is a nice “warm-up” before walking. It also helps burn off some of their excess energy: th-cam.com/video/E1bY5ZeUxXQ/w-d-xo.html
      2. I’m not a huge fan of the “be a tree” method (stopping & waiting for slack before continuing). I know lots of trainers are, and it works well for some dogs, but for most dogs I find it just causes frustration. I’m also a fairly impatient person, so I find it frustrating for me to always have to stop hahaha. Instead, as soon as your dog has any tension, I’d call their name & immediately start walking the opposite way! That way your dog has to catch up to YOU. Reward as soon as they’re at your side. This helps keep the training in motion (so the reward is actually occurring for what you wanted which is walking with a loose leash), and teaches longer durations of zero tension before a reward (since they’re busy catching up to you). If they pull again, turn again. For the first while you likely won’t get very far, but it’s really effective over time!
      3. This is easier to demo than write out… but if you use the current method where you’re rewarding your dog for returning to you after the tension, I’d ALSO toss a second treat behind you after the one from your hand, then start walking. This puts your dog behind you so they again have to catch up, and builds duration of walking with a loose leash.

      @@happyhoundsdogtraining Thank you so much!! I’m going to keep an eye out for that video but I’m so glad you also took the time to write all this out because we’re on holiday this week so every walk is super exciting for her (and me!). These methods sound so clever, I’m going to try them for the rest of the week and see what works! I find the “tree” thing frustrating too, still I’d be willing to stick with it if it turned out to be effective but she just didn’t get it. Thanks again!

      Ok I had to come back again and tell you that you are AMAZING because we just got back from the calmest walk we’ve had since we got here! I started with the first game as soon as we got out the door and also repeated it a few times along the way, and I did the turns and dropping an extra treat every time she pulled. It took about 30 min and then she was able to calm down - I think it could’ve worked even faster but sometimes we couldn’t do the turns because of people/traffic, so I had to wait until we reached a safe area. And then we had a gorgeous relaxing walk where I finally didn’t have to worry about slipping and breaking my neck because of her pulling (it’s very snowy/icy and it’s also her first big snowy winter so she’s even more excited). We both had a wonderful time! Thank you SO much for giving me these tips even though you have a video on them coming out in a bit and you could’ve just told me to wait. I wish we could come train with you in person but unfortunately we’re on a different continent. I did buy your Prey Drive pdf yesterday (my dog is just like yours, if something moves she will chase first and ask questions later 😭) and I’m looking forward to working on that with her when we get back home 🙌

    For some reason the facial pattern reminds me of a rat terrier my friend owns!

      The colouring and some of the physicality (except the size) definitely appears rat terrier! I can see it. It would also explain his extreme desire to chase small animals 😂

    what if my dog doesnt pull, but instead statues? he's an 9 month old afghan hound - he is very single minded and really hard to convince to focus on me, and even if i get him to start walking again he'll whine the whole time we are not moving in the direction he originally wanted... i feel so cruel and like such a bad dog parent when i'm just trying to lead him to the dog park - which is something i know he enjoys doing. i'm not sure how to get him to trust me and cooperate

      Ah interesting! I’ve definitely worked with dogs that freeze on walks, but it’s typically when they’re being lead somewhere they don’t want to go. I’ll link a short I created with one of my clients to show how I worked on it with him (he’d start stalling as soon as he knew we were heading home 😂). Watch this: th-cam.com/users/shorts1JkMuOvajF0
      I try to only reward them when they’re moving again, then slowly increase the duration of walking prior to rewarding. However, I would also suggest really watching your pup to make sure he genuinely does like the dog park… it’s uncommon for a dog to stall when going in a direction they’re excited for!

      @@happyhoundsdogtraining thank you for the link, ill try to follow the advice :-)! would you be willing to make a video teaching us games like the up and down game, to help create a dynamic for the dog to understand when to expect treats during walks?

      @@santacalma I can definitely do that! 🙂
