FAVOURITE Dog Enrichment Toys & How I Prepare Them
I love this video (and all your videos) and want to try this method with my golden who very aggressively barks/attacks the vacuum (only time I see him act like this and I feel bad as he must be so stressed/scared). Question - what do I do when I need to just quickly vacuum and don’t have time for it to be a training session?
Thank you! So glad you enjoy them 😊 Depending on your dogs sensitivity these are a few things clients have done that might work for you: put them out in the yard while you vacuum, put them in a separate room with music on and a snuffle mat, or hire a dog walker or ask a friend/family to take your dog out for ~30 minutes twice weekly while you quickly clean. They’re all a bit of a hassle, but short term until the training works 😊
Thank you for this excellent information. I have a Jack Russell who likes to chase my chickens and pluck them, and I now have a much better understanding of his psychology and how to hopefully, help him to stop. May I make a constructive criticism for future videos? This is in no way intended to be offensive, but it would make your videos far more listenable, if you could adjust your tone. You speak in a very monotone way, which for some, is very difficult to listen to for any length of time. Right at the end, as you signed off, your tone was more expressive and annimated and that form of speaking would make your lengthy videos far more enjoyable. Thanks so much and I hope that was constructive.
I’m glad you found the video helpful, but I’m not sure what to say to your comment about me being monotone… I’ve been told I talk too fast, too slow, too high pitch, and also that I sound like a man 😂 I think my takeaway is that I won’t be for everyone and that’s ok! I make these videos to share my dog training knowledge as best as I can and I hope they find the people that need them 😊
1) longer leash, avoid tension 2) varied treats 3) refocusing games when unfocused 4) start in a low distraction environment during calm traffic periods 5) train name recognition with recall skills 6) don't self-reward pulling to scents 7) reward dog if he offers a check-in 8) anticipate and interrupt pulling 9) avoid provocative situations by distracting and calming (management) 10) don't overdo walk training. Keep limits. Do shorter excursions.
I've never heard of a functional reward toy (new to all this) because, like you mentioned, my Spanish Galgo couldn't care any less about the most delicious treat when distracted by a moving squirrel, cat etc while on our walks. He's killed a few in our backyard but never eats them. Our walks are lovely until he sees one. Hopefully this will help.
I hope it helps! For my own dog (and many others I’ve worked with) starting with a fur toy as the reward worked way better!
How do you train hiking on a long leash and allow freedom and enjoyment for the dog without having them get far ahead of you and pull? Our dog stays on trail and does not venture out to the sides (sides = thick woods), but he walks faster than us and reaches the end of his leash quite easily. We have trained the word "check" where he stops and waits a few seconds for us to catch up, but soon reaches the end of the leash again. We can't have him "check" a hundred times during a 30 min hike. What would you suggest???
Hello! I enjoy your video about dog prey drive. I am trying to get my dog to stop chasing and putting her mouth on my cat. Do you have a specific video for this? Thank you, Chris Webb
It’s not specifically about cats, but this video walks you through the step-by-step process I use to stop animal chasing 👉 STOP Animal Chasing: Complete Dog Prey Drive Tutorial th-cam.com/video/A7D9tE40xoE/w-d-xo.html
I've watched several "leave it" videos and yours is the best I've seen by far.
Wow, thank you so much!! 🙏

Does anyone know if this strategy requires keeping treats for every walk? Or do the dogs eventually learn to walk without treats also? Thanks for your help!
I phase down treats a LOT (my dog might get 2-3 total per walk now) but I don't suggest getting rid of them completely. It's still important to reward dogs for the behaviours we want them to keep offering 😊
@ Thanks for responding!
@@alisecornia Of course! 😊
This is difficult given that I do need to take my pup for walks...I am trying to condition him each time we go for a walk but inevitably I have to put the harness on. I'm afraid I am undoing all the gentle conditioning I am trying. I have to walk him with this harness because he is a "puller". I have noticed that the pulling is getting better so I do not want to abandon the harness.
100% fair, and if he pulls I'd definitely keep using the harness. For some dogs I actually find it helpful to use 2 different harness... one for the current walks (knowing he'll stay scared of it) and another that will be properly conditioned (and then switch to only using the conditioned one once training is complete).
@@happyhoundsdogtraining thank you...I did decide to purchase your 6 week training program so I could go back to basics. It's a great program. I am following your request that I do not take him out for any regular walks until we get through the first 2 weeks. In the meantime, the only issue that I do have is the way to train the cue "Heel" when I can't put the harness on him. And the emergency U turn. Should I put the harness on anyway?
Thank you! I'm so glad you like it :) Do you have yard access for his bathroom breaks and such? If possible, I'd suggest spending 1 week conditioning the harness (couple short sessions a day) and otherwise not having him see it at all. You can still get a head start on some of the leash program such as indoor practice (just don't add the heel cue), but the focus of that week is mainly the harness. Some dogs change their mind about the harness quickly when they're only having positive experience!. After giving it a solid effort for a week, if he still has some fears I'd change to using 2 separate harnesses (and then genuinely start the leash training program) 😊 It's a good compromise between working on his fears without restricting walks too long!
@ I decided to try and use a smaller framed harness for the indoor work, before we go outside (yes we have a yard). I am conditioning him to the larger harness that I eventually want to use. One thing however, I put the small harness on him today to see if we could get to the next step of the heel cue. He follows tightly to my side when not on the leash. As soon as I put the leash on him he completely forgot all the training to this point. I will have to go back to no leash I guess. At least for a bit longer.
this was wonderful. so clearly laid out thank you. I am looking forward to training my new 4 month old cavapu
So glad it was helpful! I hope it goes well with your new pup!
I have a 5 1/2 month old puppy I adopted from a shelter. My focus is to get her to quit jumping. Sitting should come first, right? What type of treat do you suggest?
Yes, train sit first! I'll link my tutorial for that here: th-cam.com/video/hD_1QJdehak/w-d-xo.html And I typically divide “dog treats” into three value categories: 1) Low value: kibble, fruit/vegetable dog treats, milk bones, etc 2) High value: freeze-dried beef liver, single ingredient or pure meat dog treats, soft & stinky dog treats, etc 3) Very high value: cheese cubes, boiled & shredded chicken, ground beef, roasted pork chop, etc I suggest using level 2 treats most of the time you're training with the occasional level 3 as an extra surprise 🙂
My Shiba is supposed to be a small-game hunter, so she hunts chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits. Surprisingly, she gave up on birds after a month
My 2 huskies recently killed a stray cat and it ate my pet parrot .Now i am both confused and angry towards them thats why i watched ur video but i am still worried bcz i want my dogs to stay with my other pets like chickens without any leash.i cant stay with them always to tell it to “leave it”or give them a treat…
Oof, that would definitely be upsetting!! As I mention in the video the goal at the more advanced level is to phase out need to cue "leave it" and have it become a more default behaviour. I rarely need to tell my dog to leave it for squirrels, cats, bunnies, etc anymore :) I would strongly suggest using management and not allowing access to potentially harming more animals until you've done extensive training though!
Ok I’ll try my best!thank you for ur advice 🖤
Just found your channel and am loving your content. New 4 y/o rescue pittie who's doing pretty well but needs improvement. I am especially interested in moving her away from very rough play that sometimes scares me. Plays this way with people. I don't have another dog and am limiting her close-up exposure to other dogs for now. Any videos on rough play?
Welcome to the channel! Glad you're enjoying it 😊 I don't have multi-dog videos yet or any on rough play, but it's something I want to create in the future!
Dem Baby gegenüber? Glaub ich sofort. Mein Hund kommt immer an erster Stelle.
Is this translation correct: "Toward the baby? I believe it immediately. My dog always comes first." I actually found the opposite! I genuinely worried I wouldn't be able to love my baby as much as my dog (didn't feel possible), but then ended up loving Emma on a whole new level. I had lots of guilt about not being able to prioritize my dog as much once I was a mom!
Thank you for sharing. ❤
I hope it helps those that need it! ❤️
I have tons of mom guilt with no dog to add to the mix 😂 Wonderful video!
Thank you! Mom guilt of any kind is such a beast 😭

Thank you!! 🙏
I'm going to try this, wish me luck. Glad I come across this video.
Good luck, I hope it helps! 😀
great video. super helpful. thank you!
You're welcome! 🙂
Thank you for your videos and the work you put in. My golden retriver puppy and I appreciate your videos, which are so easy to understand and follow. I am a first dog owner, and you've made my life easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you! ❤
That makes me so happy to hear!! 😊 Glad you enjoy them
My puppy learned to jump in a shelter that keeps dogs/puppies in pens where staff and visitors lean over to pet them and so they stand on hind legs to reach people. I wish they would employ your techniques from the start.
Sooo frustrating. Getting attention from strangers can be such an exciting reward, so I can definitely see that developing undesirable jumping behaviours quickly!
What is the best way to train friends ? Sometimes we’re in a situation where the dog is not inside or on leash and he jumps on certain friends who lean over him, laugh, pet him, shove him off, say down, off, etc. Is this going to transfer to those situations?

My dog jumps on me all the time and actually hurts me with his claws scratching the skin off my arms or actually jumping on me when I am in bed, often landing on my stomach. He is a 6 mo goldendoodle. He knows sit command but how can I stop this jumping when I am off guard.
That sounds painful! Few thoughts to help until you train him more desirable default behaviours: - Make sure his nails are well trimmed to help immediately decrease discomfort - If his nails already are short and it still scratches that much, temporarily using dog booties on the front paws until he's better trained can help - Use a leash (if two people are available) or a baby gate to minimize how much he CAN jump on you during training - Don't let him into zones (like the bedroom) where he can jump on you unexpectedly unless you're actively doing training at that time. Once more desirable behaviours are taught you can phase out anything you've used as management!
I noticed on the walk u said, "leave it." Did u give her a treat for leaving it? She was watching u, expecting it. BTW, I understand every move isn't seen on video. Just asking b'cuz u said they get rewarded each time they do it right. * Of all training methods or techniques I've seen, your's stands out. I love your style.
Thank you! Can you timestamp the moment you’re asking about so that I know I’m answering about the right clip 😊
My two Boston terriers one is 3 and the other is 1 and they both chase and harass my cats and they don’t listen to scolding or to stay
I think this full length prey drive video can help! STOP Animal Chasing: Complete Dog Prey Drive Tutorial th-cam.com/video/A7D9tE40xoE/w-d-xo.html
I typically subscribe to a 'balanced' type of training with corrections as well as ample positive reinforcement. i have a gsd puppy now and as she is so young i am avoiding corrections as much as possible. however, she has a tendency to chase my cat when bored so i need to work on the prey drive. anyway, i appreciate what you said about why you don't correct. it definitely is something to think about and adds gravity to the decision to correct, which i will continue to do but with more intention and care.
Of course I’d love to encourage you away from corrections completely haha, but I’m so glad you’ll at least use them more cautiously 😊
Thank you.
You're welcome! 😊
I've been searching for a good video to send to my own clients for reference, and this is EXCELLENT. I'll be using it going forward, thank you!!!
You're so welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
This is a great video! I've seen many videos regarding dog training and behavior but nothing was explained so clearly with actual examples from real life. I love the approach of positive training.
Thank you!! So glad you liked it :) I always try to ACTUALLY show dogs learning/using the skills in my tutorials 😀
I use this and slight leash taps and she’s walking perfect and stress free, I love R+ a lot it’s a great way to train, wonder why some balanced trainer don’t use R+ ….
Yes, R+ is so effective and much kinder 😀
Not my dog running away when I say boom
Oh no!! Might need a different cue word 😂
My problem is that my Golden wants to eat everything, i.e. leaves, sticks, mushrooms, etc., when I take him outside. He's responsive to leave it but it gets old saying leave it over and over just taking him out to go the bathroom.
That would definitely get frustrating!! As I mentioned in this video building a reward history for leaving things alone can help make that their default behaviour. However, 2 other thoughts! 1) Watch your dog when he grabs things. Does he seem excited about the object, or does he quickly look to you after you see what your reaction will be? Some dogs start grabbing/stealing things as a demand behaviour because they know it gets them attention! I’d address that differently than this tutorial. 2) You can also consider an anti scavenge muzzle so he can’t grab anything. Might lower frustration while you work on training. Just make sure to condition it properly so your dog doesn’t mind wearing it!
@@happyhoundsdogtraining Thanks for the reply. I did get an OutFox field guard to use while I sort the issue out long term.
My pitbull won't stop chasing my cats, my cats are in very scared for their lives
Springer spaniel and he chases squirrels
She looks like the husky, Shadow’s twin sister (of the Husky Moon channel). Her face markings/eye mask are nearly identical to Shadow’s. Those boys got sent away to board and train with e collars. 😢 This little girl lucked out. Is she yours or a board and train?
I wish she was mine! But I was just training her for a client 😊
Min pin x chihuahua and she used to do what we would call "the bloodless kill" when she would catch rats in our backyard in Brooklyn. She's 17 yo now so those days are behind her. 😊
5 dangers of filming with a Malamute puppy ;)
The knee bridge was a great idea, thanks
You're welcome! 😊
Thanks for the great dog training video!
