I hated how Han got his name at first. But after I rewatched the movie, I kind of see it as he kept the name to remind himself that he's alone in the galaxy, with no friends and no family. And the reason he kept it was also for identity's sake and because he was already associated with that name.

Garrett Hooks Yes, he is in the story less because Han isn't in it, he's the second fiddle to a fiddle that no longer exists. But to say that its for story reasons is reaching. He should have had more interaction with Rey and became her sidekick more or less. Instead we got a few minutes of Chewie hanging out with f'ing porgs. And he flew the falcon in like 2 scenes. Thats about it.

Actually, there were moments in Solo where I kind of felt bad for Chewbacca as everybody focussed so much on Solo it felt like it downplayed Chewbacca's importance. Like when Qi'ra automatically sat on the co-pilot seat without taking heed of Chewie. I was surprised there wasn't more reason for Chewbacca to stay with han. I believe in the EU he was saved by Han, which meant Chewbacca was under a life debt. Gradually it evolved into friendship instead. I didn't really feel like they went for this in the movie

I didn't get a chance to see it in theaters but after seeing all the shit talking on the internet my expectations were pretty rock bottom. Good thing I don't really believe people on the internet. The movie was pretty damn good. Was it amazing? No. Could it have been better? Obviously. But it was a solid fun movie nontheless to me.
Easily the best bit was seeing Maul and just getting validation that he was alive in the movies and not just in the show. It was an awesome moment.

There were a lot of people who said "I hated The Last Jedi, so I won't see Solo." As Spock would say: "That's most illogical." Any Star Trek fan knows that just because one movie is bad doesn't mean the one that follows it will be bad. I wish the Star Wars fans weren't so whiny.

Tricky. I think it's a good film, but there are many elements that don't feel like Star Wars to me. I am very conflicted about it, I love the Luke on Crait scene for example, but at the same time I feel as if Luke's character was the complete antithesis of everything he stood for and how he acts in the books, comics, movies, even Battlefront 2. I think just as a film fan, you can make the argument TLJ is better than many other of the Star Wars movies, but I weigh Star Wars storytelling first over what I thought of it strictly as a film.
TLJ falls somewhere around the middle of the pack of my favorite Star Wars films.

I mean you could just look up online how maul is alive and your set. I mean you dont have to watch 1-6 to wacth 7 but it helps, and I now thats different its just depends on how much effort you are willing to give, versus how much you want too enjoy the movie. I think the way Han got his last name is a homage to the Godfather in a way. It’s exaxtly the way Vito got the name Corleone. And when you think about it, in many parts of the world last names were originated by where a person is from or what they look like or what someone’s proffesion is. But I can see it was bit cheesy to many people including myself, till I started thinking about it.

Maybe they should've gone with a trilogy, Imagine if each of the three parts of this film were it's own film.
The first would be, as Hello Greedo puts it, about Han's early years as a teenager, then ends with the escape and Han joining the military and gaining his name.
The second is about his years in the Imperial Military, the first third as a pilot, then the crash and demoted to the infantry, where he meets Chewbacca and joins Beckett. The climax is the job, which of course goes wrong.
Then the final movie is about the big Kessel Run and the aftermath, where we finally see Han become the scoundrel we all know and love.

I know I'm biased being a filmmaker so I look for those specific aesthetic things. But it's really so fun to watch. My biggest criticism: the film was graded way too dark for my taste. I have a similar opinion on the re tread of things we already know making it into a plot or film, but it just didn’t bother me at all for this film, like at all, this has quickly become my favorite SW film to rewatch with RotJ holding that title since I was like 6, I don’t know something about it just feels great to me. Maybe it’s because I also watch a lot of comic book films and an inevitable thing that’s understood by the audience is that a comic book or few is partially adapted for a film. And sometimes a large part or even majority of excitement for said film is seeing how well those moments are executed in film, seeing the visualization of what we know, but as I said, I get it, heck I agree with it. But this film really just works for me.

The reason why the 'checklist' in Solo worked for me is that it was all in the context of story/narrative and didn't just get randomly thrown in there by coincidence. Han/Chewy showing up in TFA and just happening to find the Falcon after so many years, is a perfect example of a random checklist that was done because it had to be.
Every 'checklist' item with Han progressed the movie and was part of the story. He doesn't just randomly find the Falcon, but he meets Lando for the first time, he loses a bet (which we all thought he would win), develops a friendship (from a certain point of view) goes on a mission as a passenger on the Falcon, and THEN finally flies it when Lando is injured. The Kessel Run is not something he stumbled into but it was part of the story again, and a big part of the mission that he shows off his flying skills for the first time. Meeting Chewy and Han shooting first all have significance in the story, as falling into the pit with Chewy is part of him escaping the Empire, and shooting Beckett is his eventual descent into being a lone wolf (until he changes at the end of ANH).
I thought the movie did a good job of avoiding 'fan service' for the sake of fan service, as Rogue One had the 2 Cantina guys from ANH just happen to bump into Jyn and Casian. That is random fan service at it's worse. Solo really is it's own entity and that is why I really liked it, as it's a Heist movie that just happens to contain one of our beloved characters from a GFFA.

Solo is incredibly underrated, and it is by far my favourite Star Wars movie since the original trilogy. I don't care about the boxes being ticked, because that only really matters the first time you watch it to learn new stuff... But we watch Star Wars films hundreds of times. So, instead of these things being "new", they'll end up just being things that we know, understand and accept.
I just feel like this film is so enjoyable and reminds me so much of A New Hope. I'd love to see a second instalment of Solo, because Alden as Han is incredible.

I would love to see another shot at Solo with the same team and takes more chances. I wanna see this Han, Chewie, and Lando blast across the galaxy conning people and taking on heists. There's been some rumours and speculation that this could happen with a miniseries on Disney's streaming thing and I'd totally be down with that.

Yeah I think I pretty much agree with you on most points. I liked the Maul reveal, though I thought it was a little bit overdone, like there was no need for him to wave his lightsaber around in such a dramatic fashion. But I'm glad he was in there. Overall I think it was a fun movie, a safe movie but one that will bear repeated viewings in the future.

  • @frostbytefreemanfilms
    @frostbytefreemanfilms 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I totally agree with you. The beginning was my favorite part. Qi’ra was fantastic too, and while I do kinda feel that the movie kinda slows down after that, it picks up at the end when he “shoots first” and then the parallel to TLJ happened.
The way I see it, this movie shows Han as a man of contradictions. He has problems with his dad, and yet flies a ship his father was known for making that would carry all that emotional pain. Han returns to Lando even after he’s betrayed him before and loves despite being turned away before. He was turned away from his son, and yet is willing to give his life for him. Why does Han consistently put himself in situations where he only causes himself pain?
    As Qui’ra says,
    He’s the good guy.

Great review! It was ok in the movies, but I loved it on the small screen. FYI, I hated how he got his last name. Especially because his good friend who died in the novels name was So'ulo. He was his Rodian friend!.... So'ulo - Solo that to me was a missed opportunity.

This movie was destined to be divisive from the beginning. Inarguably, they COULD have selected a better/more interesting premise or subject to make a Star Wars Story film about, as opposed to a character that we didn’t really need to see an origin story for to appreciate him more.
But does that make this movie bad?
No, not at all. It’s pretty good. But still, perhaps unnecessary.
