  • Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker is here, and it's my least favorite film in the sequel trilogy. The relationship between Rey and Ben was fun, and one of the only things about the movie I enjoyed and found interesting. Here we go!
    Official synopsis:
The surviving Resistance faces the First Order once more in the final chapter of the Skywalker saga.
    Directed by: J.J. Abrams
Written by: Chris Terrio, J.J. Abrams, Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow
Starring: Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnal Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong'o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelli Marie Tran, Ian McDiarmid, Billy Dee Williams, Greg Grunberg, Shirley Henderson, Billie Lourd, and more
I wrote a book! It's called "Sorry About The Mess". Check it out here: www.amazon.com...

The most interesting idea the film hints at but doesn’t outright say is expanding the rule of two. I always thought the Rule of Two was underwhelming: one master and apprentice. And upon the master’s death, the apprentice suddenly becomes the master.
Palpatine’s line “I am all the sith” and the legion of dark hooded figures behind him, alludes to the idea that when an apprentice kills his/her master, not only is the sith covenant passed along but so too is their force essence, forever bonded to them. It follows, guides, and strengthens the apprentice and makes him truly the master. The passes along of the torch is what makes a sith all powerful. So Palpatine’s destruction of the Jedi order isn’t just the work of a genius politician but the culmination of a 1000 years of sith work. And it’s nice to know that the sighs of old got a front row seat look at the Jedi’s destruction along side Palpatine. This also literally explains the title “Dark Lord of the Sith”.

Gmail com I mean, “I am all the Sith” and Palpatine’s talk of his spirit transferring into Rey after she strike him down with her lightsaber seem pretty on the nose. The biggest problem for me was the plot mixed with the break neck pacing, it feels like weird poorly written fan fiction stitched together with an amazing final chapter. Plotlines are introduced and then never developed, so many characters just appear to do nothing.
I just wish JJ would've found a way to work with what was given to him instead of trying to retcon everything TLJ did. The reason people hated TLJ wasn't because of the twists, I think it had more to do with that movie being boring and incredibly hard to sit through (and the awful marvel tier jokes). My one problem is that Ben died and Rey survived in the end. I think it would've been cool if both Palpatine and Rey died, destroying the organisations they embodied and we're left with Ben - a powerful force user that isn't a jedi nor a sith. He's something unique, and that would've been cool to leave with a character that will define the force in the future in a new way, rather than by sith or jedi teachings but at the same time, not denying the positives of either through his hands on experience with both.

@@Buttcakes15 Honestly, the only two things that were meaningful in TLJ was Luke and Snokes death. Both of which could have been mentioned in the beginning title crawl of episode 9 and you wouldn't need to know anything else to understand what is happening. The Jedi being wiped out by Palatine (and Vader) was already made clear in the OT, episode 3, Rebels, Jedi fallen order and the comics. Poe getting rebels killed is meaningless, because rebels are always dying and somehow they always amass. Could have been mentioned in a sentence. Rose and Finn are practically ignored in episode 9.

@@Benjamin0119 Yeah, that's kinda what I assumed. I guess maybe Rey died because all the Jedi power in her was too much for her body to handle or something. Ben didn't get any extra back up power after losing so much of it. So it's possible maybe he wouldn't have died if he had his full power and wasn't injured. I do wonder if Rey had been the one to bring him back if she'd have also died. Like, is it a requirement for bringing back someone, a life for a life. Or is it just a matter of how strong someone is in the force and someone really powerful could do it without giving up their entire life force. And for that matter, is a life force finite? Or can it be revived through meditation and pulling in more energy from around her via the force. Like, is it like a spirit bomb from DBZ, basically. There's definitely quite a few unanswered questions in the film about how things work or happened.

    **Potential Spoilers**
Honestly, I didn't mind it. The first movies I ever saw were the original trilogy, which got me hooked onto Star Wars. I appreciated the prequels and watched them way too many times growing up as a kid. Yes, there are parts in the prequels that are a stretch, but they don't completely turn me off of the whole trilogy. I've had the same feelings with this sequel trilogy. I was somewhat disappointed with The Force Awakens, seemed like it was just an updated version of A New Hope. I enjoyed about half of The Last Jedi. I wasn't a fan of the whole Canto Bight "arc" of the story, but it didn't ruin the movie for me.
Going into this movie, I had pretty low expectations based on the reviews I heard about it. However, after watching the movie I feel like it was executed as well as it could have been given what JJ had to work with following The Last Jedi. The fans were divided, people were apprehensive of all new Star Wars content, and JJ knew this. He did his best to satisfy all fans, I feel.
    The good:
    - I enjoyed the development of Rey's skills, and the fine line she keeps walking in regards to slipping towards the Dark Side. The force healing power was seen in The Mandalorian, and although some were saying that its a huge plot hole since the Jedi never used it before this point, it isn't too far fetched that Rey, the granddaughter of a Sith Lord, could have the power to do this. Same thing with the force lightning.
    - I also enjoyed the dynamic between Poe and Zorii Bliss. I thought it was well executed, and opens up the possibility of getting some backstory on Poe.
    - I loved how all of the Jedi voices spoke to Rey. This is most likely going to be considered fan service to most, but I thought it was tasteful and presented an opportunity to tie in the prequels a bit more to this sequel trilogy.
    The bad:
    - I wasn't a huge fan of the Reylo ending, it seemed a bit forced to me that they are this emotionally involved. After everything that Kylo has done to Rey and her friends, I find it slightly hard to believe that she would forget it all in the course of like, a couple hours.
I feel that the thing that is bothering fans the most is how bringing back Palpatine has ruined Anakin's arc, but I don't believe it has. Anakin did redeem himself and "kill" Palpatine in ROTJ, and in doing so he saved his son and daughter from death at the hands of the Empire. He rose and fell, and ultimately redeemed himself. We cant expect that since he was the chosen one and brought balance once that the galaxy will forever remain in balance. And even still, he continues to bring balance by speaking to Rey and helping her do what needs to be done. I don't think that this movie ruined anyone's arcs. And the bottom line is, Star Wars was never about a single characters arc anyways. It has always been the struggle between the light and the dark, between good and evil. This movie encompassed that well, in my opinion.
Anyways, that's just my opinion on the movie. Some may agree, and I'm sure many will disagree. But in the end, we are all Star Wars fans in some way, shape, or form. And it's useless to be fighting with eachother over our opinions. :)

If I were to pick favorite scenes:
      1) The Star Destroyer escape up until the Rey Palpatine reveal was fun; reminded me a lot of what I think Rise of The Resistance must be like at Disney World. I was super happy to see Hux revealed as the secret spy, since it fit his character pretty well.
      2) Speaking of which I liked seeing the oppression of the troopers knocking door to door on the planet in the scene prior to that. It gave the First Order some much needed threat credibility.
      3) Kylo's redemption and return to the light as Ben Solo was a blast.
      4) That freaking Harrison Ford cameo during Ben's redemption. That along with all the Jedi voices Rey heard were great.
      Now for my nitpicks...
1)Reylo. My mom was sitting next to me and she said "Ewwwwww" aloud at that kiss. Why? The film was hinting that Finn had something to tell Rey the whole time, but it never came out. Was Finn about to confess his love to Rey? Where did that plot vanish to? If it wasn't for Zorii Bliss, I'd dare say Poe had more chemistry with Rey than Rey had with Kylo. It might have been more meaningful to me had Ben saved Rey by sacrificing his life for her; but leave it more of a platonic gratitude than trying to romantically link the characters, especially since one dies seconds later.
      2) Rey Palpatine. *Breaths in* boi. I came to love the idea that Rey truly came from "nobody" that TLJ presented. Making her Palpatine's long lost grand daughter killed that for me. Sure it wasn't the expected Rey Solo or Rey Skywalker or Rey Kenobi twists people were talking about back in 2015/2016... but I much prefer Rey "Nobody" than Rey Palpatine. Admittedly the idea is saved somewhat since Rey proves she is her own person by adopting herself as a Skywalker and rejecting her grand father's heritage... but still... did we really have to link her up to a famous Star Wars family? Also... prune face Sheev Palpatine canonically had sex now. That feels icky, the same type of icky I felt reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and discovered Voldemort and Belatrix Lestrange had a child together. Like Sheev Palpatine and Voldemort were the last two characters I ever wanted to know about the existence of their sex lives, and it haunts me.
      3) The massive spaceship battle was a wasted opportunity. I was so excited to see all those ships in a big battle, but the cinematography was so busy I never got the chance to really pin point what was really happening.
      4) So many logic holes in a lot of sub plots... to many to count here in this one comment.
      5) Other than Han's memory (ghost?) presenting to Ben on the Death Star II ruins... I can't think of a lot of "wow" cinematic moments. Last Jedi had those in spades, Yoda and Luke at the Burning Tree, Luke's Astral projection on Crait, the Holdo Maneuver, the duel in Snoke's throne room. Or from the other media, take for example the Battle of Scarrif in Rogue One, or Mandalorian's introduction to "The Child". All creative well shot moments that really grab your attention in the audience. Or to mention the Marvel movies... scenes such as Captain America summoning Mjolnir. There really wasn't many scenes in Rise of Skywalker that managed to excited my imagination and grab my interest the same way, it all sort of seemed generic. Our audience was in the theater bit tepid too, and that certainly lessened the impact of many of the scenes.

To make this movie better would be simply to have a shot with all the fallen Jedi behind Rey when Rey is killing palpatine. It would have Anakin and Luke just with their hands out or something so it’d be like they’re helping. Not only them but since it’s ‘rise of SKYWALKER’ it’d make sense to have them help in the final kill. We have the voices of the Jedi why not just have them all on screen. I think that would be brilliant fan service and would really make anakins being the chosen one just be perfect and fans would just eat that up. Also the last shot of the movie should be over the shoulder of Luke and Leia looking at Rey. Kinda imo this would have been a much better final shot in the story of SKYWALKER. It was an okay-good movie imo but not a finale of 9 films. This I think would’ve tied it up nicely

  • @sadodada

I liked it way more than I thought I would. JJ Abrams was in a very unenviable position having to direct this movie. He knew full well that he was damned whether he tried to take an innovative or a conservative approach and I think he did an admirable job navigating both. That being said, the pacing was awkward. There was a lot of shoehorning in an attempt to contextualize most of what the Last Jedi had to say. But in the end, taking an apologist approach to storytelling is probably not the best way to make the concluding chapter to a 42 year epic. I agree with you that the Rey/Kylo interactions were the heart of the story and I would have liked to see more of that. I never warmed up to Poe or Finn, they always felt like cyphers to me. Nothing against Isaac or Boyega, their talents are indisputable. I always chocked it up to poor writing. I was left a little perplexed by the Force Awakens. I expected more from JJ and Larry Kasdan. I saw what Rian Johnson was trying to do with Last Jedi and I applaud his desire to move the saga in new directions, but it was poorly executed and left me wanting. I like Rise of Skywalker the most of the sequel trilogy of films, but (and I’m sure I’ll get shit for this) the sequel trilogy felt less like Star Wars than the prequel trilogy. I think the reason for this is the absence of George Lucas. Now please hear me out. While Lucas has a LOT of short-comings as a writer and director, he has an unparalleled imagination. George Lucas is a great idea man. His attention to detail has also made him a first-rate producer. The one thing I feel the sequel trilogy has lacked is a consistent vision of where the story should go. Much like Rick McCallum has to share a lot of the blame with Lucas for the flaws of the prequel trilogy, Kathleen Kennedy has to shoulder the responsibility for the sequel trilogy’s deficiencies. Bringing in big-budget auteurs seems like a great idea, but a post-Lucas ‘Star Wars’ trilogy needs more than a ‘visionary writer/director’ and a laissez-fare approach. This is why the concluding third of the greatest intellectual property of all time has divided its fandom in a way we never could have imagined. That’s my two-cents. Now, Favreau, give me more Mandalorian, like now!

Id be interested in your opinion on the general character development. Ray's powers feel awfully unearned, Fin didnt get to do anything, Po is the same person he was before.. he doesnt get to become the greatest pilot, he just says smug stuff. The established supporting cast had more impact than the main cast... it's just a confusing mess that left me feeling empty and uninterested. The feeling I get after the 3 movies is that we have seen them all before.. but better so what is the point of ever revisiting this trilogy? It's confusing that Star Wars seems nothing more than rebels vs empire + deathstar.. like you have a massive universe with endless creative freedom to explore and yet it boils down to "I know that, therefore I clapped and cheered"
On another note: The prequels are bad but at least they had an overarching idea, a vision, a connection and at the same time a clear distinction from style and characters.

I both agree with you and disagree. I liked the Last Jedi and have been a defender for the same reasons as you for the last 2 years. But I also still really enjoyed myself when I saw it a couple hours ago. Yeah, it retcons things and undermines stuff Rian did, (just as he did to J.J to be fair) hut I'm okay with it overall. I like the fact that it was more like TFA. Which was the film I liked best of the first two films. I like how some of the questions I had were finally answered. And as much as I liked the idea of Rey as a nobody, I also feltckije this works better. It explains why she's so powerful, and explains the immediate connection Rey and Kylo have the moment they meet in TFA. I completely agree that all of their scenes were the best parts of this movie. I felt that way last time with TLJ as well. Their force connection stuff was my favorite part of the movie. There's some things I felt disappointed by though. Not enough force ghosts. No Obi-Wan, no Anakin, or Yoda. I'd have preferred a ROTJ scene with all the most important Jedi force ghosts watching on. I wanted to see Hayden play Anakin once more before it was the end of the saga. I like that J.J didn't just completely disregard everything Rian did. He kept the force connection as a key plot element, which was one of the best parts of both films. I wish Leia had been able to have more screen time. But I understand her death tied their hands and I was happy with how much they managed to do with her in the film. I also wanted way more Luke as a force ghost. He didn't really taunt Kylo like he had promised. Which was a disappointment. I liked that there's actual lightsaber fights again, there wasn't a single real lightsaber fight in TLJ. I was surprised that Rose was basically just cut out of the film and her relationship with Finn was almost non existent. It just further makes me feel that this entire movie was a massive course correction to address fan criticisms of TLJ. And it seems to have worked. The roles are reversed now. Critics are butthurt and giving bad reviews. And fans are giving positive reviews. Which I think in the end is preferable for Disney because fans are who they need to show up to make money. The theater I went to wasn't even full and it had only been out for a day so far. My parents were able to buy seats right next to mine in the back row, by the middle even though it was last minute. So clearly a lot of people just weren't as excited as they were last time. When I saw TLJ it was far more packed. Though I also saw it on Thursday instead of Friday last time. So maybe it simply sold out on opening day or night. I saw it at 3:30 too, so not exactly a night time showing so maybe there's more people later in the day who showed up. Either way, I think I've said all I have to say on the movie for now.

Maybe it won't happen, but until it doesn't I'm gonna hold out a little hope. There's several things I would like to see in a deleted scene. For one, what the hell did Finn want to tell Rey?! Why was this a recurring reference for so much of the film and then just forgotten about?! I want to know how the hell Maz got Luke's original lightsaber. Off hand, those are the two main ones I can think of. Can you think of any you'd want to see to tie up any unresolved loose ends? Either from this trilogy or the other 2.

I have watched Star Wars movies since 1981. Star Wars was my first movie, I love the Star Wars series. The Star Wars saga is special to me. I just finished watching the Rise of Skywalker, and I thought it was a great movie. I did not appreciate the Last Jedi one bit. I felt that it was the worse Star Wars movie in the entire franchise, I felt it just did not care about anything Star Wars related. I especially hated how it squander Luke's story and his potential in the Star Wars saga. I wanted Luke to be Yoda frankly. I wanted wisdom not cowardice, I did not appreciate him being some indifferent hermit on a island. I felt that the Rise of Skywalker was a nice rebound from that horrible movie. Let me know what you guy think?

I have mixed feelings about it. I like that Luke was much different to Yoda. He wasn’t some grand master Jedi who grew up in the golden era. However I don’t like him hiding out on an island after making a mistake as I would imagine him to go and try to solve it immediately although that would be the fault of the force awakens no the last Jedi. Seeing what we have now, I’m glad it turned out the way it did since we have Luke being a hermit in the start of the Last Jedi and have him face Ben at the end and then we see him restored in the rise of Skywalker. I think it works well even though I overall hate TROS

This was a pretty rushed and a pretty fan fiction like film, Kylo Ren was certainly the best part, but it feels like Rian Took everything JJ had set up like snoke and everything and threw it out in the last jedi, now jj cam back and had no idea what to do so he threw the Emporer in there, you can tell now this trilogy didn't have a gameplan, that was its biggest fault, and it also just further diminishes the ending of return of the jedi, Rey hasnt earned the title of being the chosen one, that was Anakin, this new trilogy put the prequels into perspective for me, 1-6 is my complete story, this trilogy is just an add on, poorly executed, and especially the first 30 minutes of this film I laughed at how much exposition there was, this isnt a good film, its pretty damn bad, and kylo ren being surpreme leader and not taking orders from another higher up didnt last long, Jesus this trilogy is so messy, Luke was handled fine i guess and the leia stuff was the best they could do, and that han solo scene was just great, Rey taking the skywalker name and being the one to take down palps didnt feel earned even though she was a palpatine, it was just laughable sometimes how deperate they were to tie everything together

in the plagueis novel palpatine and plagueis were trying to create a baby by using the force but couldn't quite do it I believe. In the comics (also canon) they explained that anakin was created by palpatine who discovered how to do it. Doesn't explain why he used some slave woman on a planet he has no connection to, but whateva. So, it's canon he could impregnate a random woman. Question is, WTF is the deal with his son?

It could have gone exactly the way Anakin was created, and that would have made some sense without missing out on too much story or exposition as to how Palpatine could do such a thing. He's done it before, we could move along with the story now. But instead we get an unspoken of SON??? out of nowhere that's never explained and killed off!?!?! Like there already asking us to sustain so much disbelief with Palps being back, and then they top it off with a secret son. It's so bad.

I really don't like it. I hate that the Skywalker legacy is turned into nothing but death, pain and being crushed by Palpatine. In my eyes, Palpatine won at the end. He was the cause behind the death of every single Skywalker and now the whole family is just gone. Ben should've lived.
And yeah, Rey took the name, but her being a Skywalker feels so meaningless. The only Skywalker she knew was Luke, he's also the one member of the family who she had the worst relationship with. Leia and Ben are Skywalkers, but by name they're Solos, so why would she not take the Solo name?
It's not a terrible movie, it has good moments, but in the end, I feel like those good moments are not worth the sour note on which the Skywalker saga ended.

Kylo resses the sidious inhabited rey, they kiss and ass kylo dies, her eyes turn sith. Having been the cause of the death of a loved one. Sidious and rey becoming one but rey is unaware of it.

Regarding some of the fan favourite decisions made in this movie, this quote from a TROS review resonated with me:
"Having the people in charge of Star Wars’ legacy acknowledging their own inability to move forward is a sad way for the story to end. Even as The Rise of Skywalker’s characters claim their ultimate triumph, the film feels clumsy, hurried, and above all, like an admission of creative defeat."
    www.polygon.com/reviews/2019/12/18/21024586/star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker-review-spoiler-free
I wish the fresh, but still Skywalker- focused spirit of Rian's TLJ had been continued. But it actually felt dampened in favour of fantastic yet ultimately dull decisions. The simple Rey is no one, whom the Force has chosen to be someone was not my first hope but it was the truest and boldest choice for the character. Oh well...see you all in about 10 years.
