The term EZ8 is paying homage to the Sherman Tank M4A3E8 or Easy Eight Sherman. Basically is was a modified version of the mass-produced Sherman tank. The Gundam was modified from the mass-produced Ground Type.
That Zaku II shows how desperate Xeon was for pilots by peeking around the corner after its hands were blown off, the pilot was clearly inexperienced and was lucky Shiro only wanted to damage, not outright kill his machine
From how it moves, it's obvious that the pilot is a greenhorn who just got ordered to take out the Guntanks. That Zaku really is lucky with the pilot that took it down just so happened to have an existential crisis on the war because he had a Zeon gf.
I don't really understand how the Ez8 is so powerful. It's a broken Gundam frame that was repaired using Ground GM parts. So it technically should be weaker than Ground Gundam.
It could use beam rifles, but the pilot of the EZ8 preferred the 100 mm machine gun. Beam Rifles drain energy quickly and give away your position even more than a machine gun.
@@DamplyDoo Also the final fight would've been done far quicker if he had a beam rifle. The machine gun just gave the gouf a bit too much leniency to be more agressive. The shield bash wouldn't have worked if Shiro had a beam rifle.

more armor makes it more durable than the ground type. aside from that, i think they are basically the same.
