Many/Most companies don't value support, they feel text works as good as anything, but I am a visual learner and thats how I teach as well, I think this is the best way to learn and I try to reach out to companies to allow me to do this for them, but many don't bother to reply, Terra-Master didnt reply either but I thought to make this video to help others and I am so very happy I could help you as well.
Just bought this same one. I have 2 - 20TB drives in the first two slots and the other two are empty. Mine has been synchronizing for 24 hours. It showed it would be 1000.0 minutes, which is 16 hours. Do you think this is normal and about how much longer will it synchronize? Also, if I buy two additional drives, will I be able to just sync those two? Loved your video - very thorough!
yes, it is completely normal, sadly mechanical drives are slow, and thats a TON of data, so you are good my friend. Yes you can add more drives, but sadly since I maxed it out already I can't show you, It would be nice to be able to work with Teramaster on future productions, but they never reply. Just wanted to let you know that I got feedback from Terra Master. They said that even though it said it would be 1000.0 minutes to sync, that is the maximum the system can go to is 1000.0 minutes. They said because I had 20TB drives, that it could take much longer, which it did! When I woke up this morning, it had finished syncing. Does yours continually make little clicking noises? Once again - thanks for your help!@@ThisBytesForYou
I thought so but its great that you made sure, and its even better that its done, thats a huge weight off of your shoulders for sure. As for noise, yes, it will do little clicks for ever as data is being processed, it can get very quite, but it will never be totally silent. if you could, since you have already established a communication to them, please let them know I helped you choosing this and getting your questions answered and let them know I am very interested in working together with them. I have reached out, but they have never replied. Thanks so much again my friend and congrats on the NAS, i do all of my video editing directly off of the NAS, its so smooth, and well of course as long as your network connection is smooth, you are good.
Good video, nice see the entire setup. However, I have to mention two mistakes: 1º You cant access the NAS using the USB ports in the back. Those are for external HDD, pendrives or addons. A NAS can only be access through the Network (Ethernet). 2º The drives you chose are SMR so they are painfully slow in write / rewrite operations. The worst part is not the inmediate low performance, but in case the RAID becomes degraded, once you replace the faulty disk, the rebuild can take 10 times more than with CMR disk, usually days. This situation puts a lot of stress in the other disks, if another one fails, you lost the data. So, for NAS drives, stick with CMR disk only like the WD RED PLUS/PRO or Seagate Ironwolf. In fact, use CMR only for everything. If the data is important to you, make backups. RAID is not a backup
I didn't choose the drives for speeds I chose them for reliability and endurance, still going strong today. Rebuilding, well that's a pain I will have to deal with to trying to save money and keeping quality, that's not an easy thing. And back up, yes it is if you backup, I don't, raid is more of a backup than no backup strategy what do ever, you just actually have to back up which I don't do, this is just alternate storage. But yes, you can use this for back up if you want to, but no, raid itself is not a back up, just a bunch of drives joined together. Thank you for correcting me on the USB portion. And thanks so much for your kind words.

Working on it my friend, I have a huge backlog of products sent to me to review, and I personally bought this, andthe drives, it wasn't cheap, but so very well worth it.
Great Video! Very clear and concise. I would like to see videos on how to make my TNAS secure. I would be great to see the prefix “https” in the browser search bar instead of “Not secure”
Thanks my friend, so very happy you enjoyed it, but for an HTTPS prefix, you would have to pay for SSL licensing... maybe I am wrong on that I forget what my Synology NAS at work has, if it is HTTPS or HTTP but I think they leave it more towards your router to take care of the security to take care of everything beneath it.
Am thinking of buying one of these, so this video was extremely helpful to me, thanks for making it. Other NAS reviews I've seen seem to suggest 1gb isn't ideal for RAM and more is better. I reckon 1gb is going to be plenty for my home use, my old single bay NAS copes fine with 256mb and has done so for six years without complaint. 1gb gonna be heaps! Can you give some idea of how loud or quiet it is when read/writing please, also do the hard drives and fans stop spinning if there's no file transfer activity? Looks like a nice quality unit with the aluminium casing and the brushed effect on the indicator light panel. Nice review, big thumbs up!
Always a pleasure my friend and so happy you enjoyed it. My day job, I am an IT manager and have been a Product Development Engineer for years, I have worked with many NAS devices. 1GB works but is not ideal, its just a little slower than others, the more RAM you have, like in a PC, makes operations faster, in fact a NAS is a PC, just a different operating system. As for noise, it really does not get loud at all. Every so often, i will hear a process, the drives maybe writting or reading data, very quietly, when i actively writing data to it, i hear it more but I have to be paying attention to it and there can be no other noise in the room for me to hear it, its very quiet. A bulk of the noise will come from the fans but since my house is always in the lower 60's°F, they don't have to work much. The rubber feet are VERY cushy and really help dampen the noise. I hope i helped you my friend and thanks again for your kind words.
Good info. Surprised it only supports SMBv1. Not secure, which is why you have to enable it in newer versions of Windows 10. Windows 10 moved to SMB v3.
me enabling it in windows might be unnecessary, but you do have to enable it from the TSO software in order to navigate through your machine and copy/paste files to and from.
Very good overview. Do you think this, or any other NAS, would be a solution for hosting your own website? They get expensive using hosts/features. Seriously curious. Thanks!
well, as I mentioned in the video, this can host a website but just remember, depending on how good that website is, you will hammer this NAS, keep it very well cooled and keep drives on hand, in case one does fail, think maybe more RAID 6 and thanks so much for your kind words.
Great system for file storage and media, may not play games from it. I have a different system as my Plex media library and these provide a great solution to that use case.
I probably won't play games off of it, but maybe will try it, not sure installers will be able to understand it but I am thinking will store, edit, and export my videos from here, since it's static and you are getting a gigabyte connection, and you are limited by your storage. I was able to get between 90MB and 122MB's per second on this transferring a 4GB file. If it was SSD's in here, I would be up to 600MB's, should be at least. I think this is awesome, still working with it
I just got my Terra-master F4-423, and it gives instructions to use the plastic pieces that have 3 pegs each to snap into the holes on the sides of each hdd to secure them in place. Should I use the screws too? I notice you didn’t snap any plastic strips back onto the hdd housings.
Defenetiv one step closer to buy a NAS, thanks for a great video Please clarify, if I use RAID 5 and have 4X6TB I will have 18TB available and 6 TB as backup I suppose, whats happen when one disk goes? Thanks
Thanks, my friend, I use it every day, I edit my videos off it, I LOVE IT. As for RAID5, If one drive fails the volume still operates but in operates in a degraded state (it no longer writes parity information). The important data should be backed up immediately and verified to be usable before any rebuild operation is started. If a spare disk is available, the controller can rebuild the data on the disk automatically. If a hot-spare disk is not available, you must replace the failed disk and then initiate a rebuild. If it's not, buy one quick to replace it.
I’m looking at the 4 bay 212 version. Right now I only have 2 drives which I want to run in RAID1 mode. Is it possible to add 1 or 2 drives and get them reconfigured to RAID5 or 6 without losing the data? I also want to connect this directly to my media box with USB. Is it possible to connect it to the network at the same time. I’d use the network to add movies to the drive.
hello my friend, I have not personally done it, though I will need to soon, but it is possible,... supposedly, check this out and let me know if it works: forum.terra-master.com/en/viewtopic.php?t=1544 I personally store all the videos here on it and I actually edit from it, its super fast.
When the disks in RAID 1 or RAID 5 are full i.e. no more space on them, do you have to remove and keep all the disks together or just remove one for keeps and reuse the other. Thanks for your reply.
ummms, well, I am running into that now... its almost full, all the videos I make, take up a lot of space. I dont recommend reusing older disks here, in my case, I bought 6TB disks, I will buy larger disks, then when I have all of the disks I need (so for me its 5, but maybe your raid array is only 3 disks) I would remove 1, pop in the new one, and let the raid take care of it, which may take a few hours. When thats done, remove the 2nd, and pop in the other and so on. I will make a video when I can afford to buy more.
@@ThisBytesForYou Thanks for your very prompt reply. Just to make sure I get it: If I have 2 disks in RAID 1 and they are full (no space left), I can remove and keep1 disk with the data and replace it with a new disk to pair with the 2nd disk in the bay. If this is correct, can I read the data on the removed disk by inserting it alone in the bay or just how can i read the data on this disk? Thanks.
@@GladDotse RAID 1, also known as disk mirroring, creates an exact copy of data on two or more disks in the array. When one disk fails, the other disk continues to function, and the system can rebuild the array by copying the data from the surviving disk onto the replacement disk. To replace one of the disks in a full RAID 1 array, you will need to follow these steps: Back up the data on the RAID 1 array to an external device or another storage location, as a precaution. Remove the disk you want to replace from the RAID 1 array. Make sure to power off the system before doing this. Insert the new disk into the empty slot in the RAID 1 array. Power on the system and allow the RAID controller to detect the new disk. Initiate the RAID rebuild process using the RAID controller software or BIOS. This will copy the data from the surviving disk onto the new disk. Monitor the rebuild process, which can take several hours or more depending on the size of the array and the speed of the disks. Once the rebuild is complete, verify that the RAID 1 array is functioning correctly and that all the data is accessible. This is usually how it works,... but that all depends on your controller as well, I can't tell which controllers work how, but this should work for you.
Hi! Do you happen to have the 2GB RAM version of the F4-210? I'm currently in the market now for a NAS and the 1GB version is about $85 cheaper than the 2GB. Is it worth getting the 2GB version than the 1GB?
Capacity as in storage yes, not ram, I've been using this one perfectly still today but I will be updating it very soon with another review on a newer unit.
Im having the same issue. Mine never worked I just installed the f4-210 friday night and when i went to install the software it never shown the nas. I can access everything from the web app but i can not map drives so i can move files from my pc to the nas. I have tried the chat to see if they can help me and they just send the link of the steps to follow, well I followed them steps and still cant get it to work. Also when on the chat it takes at least 20 minutes for them to even read or reply to every message
So it sounds like maybe you are on a different subnet, wifi vs Ethernet might be different. See what ip the nas has and what ip your PC has. For example, 192.168.1.1 is different from 192.168.0.1, so they can't talk. You will need to change the IP of the nas which means you need to change the gateway and aubnet as well.
Greetings and respect from Bangladesh. Your video on USB Booting Win10 on your ASUS ROG helped me in configuring my ASUS PRIME H310 M-E R.20 with Win10. Would you kindly advise me on which softwares and upto how much of Win 10 automatic updates I should update as my new PC Crashed two times due to having an account without Win.Product Key? Thanks and awaiting your response
well, I have never had an issue with that, as long as you follow this guide on how to create a windows 10 thumb drive, this is how I do all my systems, and I dont use a product key: th-cam.com/video/C759I7DBXd8/w-d-xo.html also thank you so much for your kind words and support. I hope you are subscribed so you can get notification on my videos.
hmmm, I am not sure to tell you on that, I think you would run into bandwidth issues aside from 2 or 3 pcs, it would run like a server share and multiple people accessing those resources.
saldy no, it is not possible to start a RAID 5 array with only one disk. RAID 5 requires a minimum of three disks to function properly. In RAID 5, the data is striped across multiple disks with parity information distributed among them. This allows for increased performance and fault tolerance.
@@ThisBytesForYou crap. well i was thinking if i had 3 small hard drives i could clone the array of three to one larger drive then add the second drive to the array and allow it to rebuild, then the third drive, but i have never set up raid before... i know that backing up three disks to one disk would cancel out the redundancy part but i thought it would be possible. thanks for the quick reply =)

@@nickkey656 always a pleasure my friend but realize, like on a Synology, your email is there, you set it up, and while the titles may not ask you for them, they filter through your Synology, they have your email, same with the Terramaster, you can just use a spam email, you know, one you only use for a spam account, then it would be private. Also, if its connected to the internet, it is much less private, you never know who has an itch to grab data, if it can be made, it can be broken. My day job, I am an IT manager, I battle this stuff all day long, its fun for me but unless you are actively fighting daily, there is no protection.
So, I have 7 drives in my newly upgraded computer now, with a total of 23TBs. I am going to be running out of drive space soon. About 80% of the content is video or engineering design work. None of this includes my future 4K files. I used to keep most of this in KingWin removable drives, but the SATA connectors in the racks started breaking off after 11 years. If I could find new connectors I could replace and I would be off and running. I have a solder sucker gun for reworking PC Boards. Also, why I am not impressed with plastic and heat. I have an entire tub of drives here.
@jmoss99 k, I need a larger one too but it was expensive for me as a small creator, and the drivers too, maybe one day and I tried planning for the future but money is money, they sell larger ones if you like but I think your stuck with plastic
I must have a voice that consultants can ignore. I have another consultant friend who thinks I don't need all these drives, mostly because he doesn't. He thinks he is a great consultant, but he doesn't listen. Rule#1, the consultant must listen to the client. This guy doesn't. He has 1000 up and 1000 down AT&T service. I am in the mountains and live on satellite broadband. IT IS ABOUT REMOVEABLE DRIVES. I don't need 50 drives up and running 24/7. You don't need all the books in the library open at the same time. They need to be there for when you need information out of them, but you take one off the shelf and open it, then put it back. I have about 50 drives here, just not in the computer. I need to get parts and repair the SATA connectors.
@@jmoss99 I agree, I love having a ton of drives, I don't have the money for a ton of drives, so ... for me, this is what I can afford, if you can do more, do it. Another friend of mine asked me yesterday, a similar question and I helped him find this off of my Amazon affiliate link: geni.us/Ax1cv1, he bought it, 16 drives.

Thanks so much for your kind words and support, it means the world to me.

However, I have to mention two mistakes:
1º You cant access the NAS using the USB ports in the back.
You are very creative and special, thank you for everything you do my dear ❤️🥰👍

Great video. I’d love to see a video going over how to use the various utility apps that you briefly went over at the end? Thanks!

@@AndrewGilmour-qld nice, congrats my friend, such an amazing journey
@@ThisBytesForYou That makes more sense! A lot of devices are going to enable services you need instead of disable what you don't for security.
This is going to be quite informative for many. It's a subject not easily touched by many.
thank you so much my friend, I greatly appreciate your kind words
I notice you didn’t snap any plastic strips back onto the hdd housings.
interesting, but they are different devices, do you notice the plastic pieces in my video?
Defenetiv one step closer to buy a NAS, thanks for a great video
Please clarify, if I use RAID 5 and have 4X6TB I will have 18TB available and 6 TB as backup I suppose, whats happen when one disk goes?
I’d use the network to add movies to the drive.
hello my friend, I have not personally done it, though I will need to soon, but it is possible,... supposedly, check this out and let me know if it works: forum.terra-master.com/en/viewtopic.php?t=1544
I personally store all the videos here on it and I actually edit from it, its super fast.
To replace one of the disks in a full RAID 1 array, you will need to follow these steps:
Back up the data on the RAID 1 array to an external device or another storage location, as a precaution.
Check the link in the description, it will take you to my Amazon affiliate for this, I don't remember which version it was.
Bigger capacity is essential. When ram is not welded, replace with max ram. Nowadays ddr4 is cheap. I upgrade is 32g at $70.
Capacity as in storage yes, not ram, I've been using this one perfectly still today but I will be updating it very soon with another review on a newer unit.
I have this NAS and have put 2 8Tb Ironwolf on RAID 1, if I want to add another 2 drives can I do this without loosing the data on the drives in it?
Yes, they would add on to it, so you are good

Im having the same issue. Mine never worked I just installed the f4-210 friday night and when i went to install the software it never shown the nas. I can access everything from the web app but i can not map drives so i can move files from my pc to the nas. I have tried the chat to see if they can help me and they just send the link of the steps to follow, well I followed them steps and still cant get it to work. Also when on the chat it takes at least 20 minutes for them to even read or reply to every message
Which issue, I don't remember showing an issue, did you watch this video?
So it sounds like maybe you are on a different subnet, wifi vs Ethernet might be different. See what ip the nas has and what ip your PC has. For example, 192.168.1.1 is different from 192.168.0.1, so they can't talk. You will need to change the IP of the nas which means you need to change the gateway and aubnet as well.

you can, but I use 4 and use all 4 for every day use, you can also use them for backup at the same time since you can have multiple directories.
@@ThisBytesForYou 2 or 3 pcs running all the time
hmmm, I am not sure to tell you on that, I think you would run into bandwidth issues aside from 2 or 3 pcs, it would run like a server share and multiple people accessing those resources.
is there is a way to start a raid 5 array with one drive and copy over data into the array until i got 3 drives in the array (to fit the requirement)
saldy no, it is not possible to start a RAID 5 array with only one disk.

I must have a voice that consultants can ignore. I have another consultant friend who thinks I don't need all these drives, mostly because he doesn't.
