i love how they don't actually look at each other when holding hands, its like a period in time, one dying, being left in another life, and one starting anew, with everything in this life changed, not knowing where to go now, killing the only man who maybe truly understood him, tho they were rivals, the respect was something both knew they could never share with someone else, so AL's character for the first time, isn't chasing someone... like a new life has begun
How DeNiro's character held out his dying hand to Pachino who played his sworn enemy -- the affection these two men had for each other -- best thing I've ever seen happen in a movie.
Before I saw the movie they pulled it in the theaters before I had a chance to see it I had to watch it on video Goldberg did a review and it wasn’t till I watched it that it wasn’t clear enough that the Al pachino and Val Kilmer characters were gay lovers.
Michael Mann's crime classic. Heat is Mann's masterpiece. Everything is razor sharp spot on. The direction, the cinematography of LA, and most off the powerhouse acting of Two of the Greatest Oscar Winning Actors of our generation. Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro commands and dominates the film. And the supporting contributions of Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Jon Voight, etc. Heat is not just one of if not The Best Action Film Of The 90's. Heat is One Of The Greatest Crime Movies Of All-time.
+Emmanuel Williams I agree. Heat is one of the greatest crime films that has ever been made. It is also firmly in my top 10 favorite movies of all time.
+MindaugasLegend - *** 20 YEAR OLD SPOILER*** LOL =) - De Niro (Neil McCauley) is dying after being gunned down by Pacino (Lt. Hanna) at the end of the movie. An aircraft landing at an airport reflects his shadow, giving Pacino the advantage. - As he dies, De Niro's last words were; 'Told you I'm never going back'. - And yes, as in jail. They had a talk earlier at a cafe, ego to ego.
"I'm alone I'm not lonely!" Neil McCauley In the end as he lays there bleeding it seems he's both alone and lonely so he reaches out to Vincent to hold his hand. Very poignant ending.
Heat, (1995). This movie is number 1 on my World's Greatest Movies List, its right there with The Dark Knight (2009). It is truly one of the best movies of all time.
I loved this movie them from the very first time I heard it in the late 1990's, Rachel, and has it stuck in my mind ever since. Its such an iconic, famous moving, powerful, moving an unforgettable them tune with a cult status that goes with it!!! Do you agree, Rachel???
I think everyone points to the scene where they are in the coffee shop talking to each other and I think that is a very great scene, one of the best. but I think the scene that got me from the first time I watched it was their last robbery and the sheer intensity and violence of the scene. These men were willing not only to risk their lives to get rich, but they were willing to tear families apart and end lives to get rich. I think Micheal Mann shot this scene so well to make that narrative very clear.
Two legends in this movie. The highlight is their first face to face meeting...I agree, this is one of the best movies. Even the bad guys had a lot of class.
Well except Van Zadt. And especially Waingro are the only two bad guys who have no class. I was SOO Happy seeing Neil take out both of them. Even if it cost him everything in the end.
this film was 100% genius, perfectly directed, beautifully acted, loved the scene when neil walked away from his woman near the end knowing he would never see her again, the hole film was a 1 off, never again will we have a crime drama this good.
The beauty of this scene and score can not be summed up for me. I think we all hit a point in life where you realize just what life is. A series of unexpected bends and turns which often include departures of the ones we respect and value even if we don’t realize it at the time. This is exactly what happened in this scene. These two characters and individuals balanced each other out. There cannot be one without the other yet they both seek to destroy one another.
I was desperate for the film to end with this glorious song in the background of Vincent and Neil grasping each other's hand. I was so happy there was no tacky epilogue. Ending the film on this incredibly cathartic point is a sign of cinematic mastery. One of the best films i've ever seen.
greatest score has ever written, best movie has ever made, far best slightly touchy script has ever written, best directing and the harmony has ever mixed up. unmatchable fucking cult classic and one of the most unique dramas out there, fucking classic, fantastic.

Thank you!!! The version on the OST CD has the original Moby version - it doesnt have the deep "booming" sounds or the crescendo after 1.15 ... thank you!!
Just saw this for the first time! I gotta say it really does earn a place in my top 10 movies of all time! The ending soundtrack is just so heavenly and powerful!
I really think McCauley stood down and let Hanna take him out. He knew revenge in going after Waingro was his demise. He lost the exit to freedom, he lost Eddy and he was never going to get away even if he killed Hanna who he finally realized was his only friend. He wasn't going back especially knowing he killed that friend so he stood down, showed his shadow to Hanna who instinctively shot him. Watch the ending again and the split second delay on McCauley's part. All he wanted was his friend to hold his hand as he left this world. GREAT ENDING to GREAT MOVIE. A Mann masterpiece.
This music is amazing. It was also used in the final episode of "Big Love". I love the ending, these 2 sworn enemies, who in another life would've probably been great friends. The way Al Pacino takes De Niro's hand after he tells him "I told you I was never going back" was one of the most powerful moments ever in cinema.
