When you watch nearly 3 hours of a film & you don't ever want it to end. HEAT is an absolute masterclass. Certainly one of the greatest films ever made.
Hear, hear. I would like to think that there are cuttings from the film during editing that could be inserted to make a directors cut, even if it last four, five or six hours long. The existing directors cut only works on creating a more visual movie without adding extra scenes. One of the best movies ever though!
Heat has many + moments but the film like a few other Mann projects, drifts off then slowly reels back to the story, building drama. Heat is a excellent movie.
So its 95 or early 96. I walk into my video store with some friends. I say to the guy behind the counter 'we want to hire a good new release. Any recommendations?' He hands me 'Heat'. He said 'it's the best movie I've ever seen!' I raised an eyebrow and looked at him skeptically and said 'that's a big call man...' He said 'it's so good that I wish I hadn't seen it just so I could experience watching it for the first time again. It's that good'. And he was right.
"So here's me, the bartender and this rabbi, the 3 of us are hightailing it down fifth avenue with this goddamn ostrich in the back seat of the convertible..." Jesus christ shut the fuck up with your "recollections", we're not all crowded around in a bar, obnoxious dope
I remember liking it upon seeing it for the first time. And repeated viewings have revealed more and more to me, which has increased my love and admiration for this beautiful film.
There will come a time when people will finally see Michael Mann for what he is - one of the greatest poets of our time. His world is that of nightly cityscapes, diffused sodium light and alienated men.
HEAT was an absolute masterpiece. It was like a once in a lifetime experience, De niro and Pacino going against each other. Sometimes I just wanna live in that era of movies forever ♥
Is it a crime story? a heist movie? is it story about a father? about the inability to conect with other people? About workholics? Is it a depection of the people that operate a highest order of their field? Is it about that certain loneliness at the top? The music makes you reflect so much upon the movie.
IMO it's a story about lonely people, hiding in their work, too afraid to face relationships. It all comes undone for McCauley, and his crew when he finally realises that.
The fact I just spent 25 minutes reading the comments here while listening to this tell me everything. I loved this film. Spoke to me in a way I can't explain. Just so damn good.
Beautiful. I knew there was something a little deeper that kept me attached to this movie since my younger years. The male condition. Never talked about on tv shows. Rarely displayed in movies. Most of the main characters that we really know anything about are in a fantasy that they think justifies ducking their responsibilities to anyone but their peers. It's exactly the reason that - Hanna's marriages fall apart - Neil doesn't get out and Eady is left alone - Chris will be separated from his family - Michael's family and Don Breedan's girlfriend are left to fend for themselves - Trejo and his wife are dead It's a truly great movie about the immaturity of some guys made to appeal to the immaturity of others, but it shouldn't be seen as endorsing anything noble. The idea that the guys in THIS movie are the ones who are more mature and stronger is a misreading of what's on the screen.
Driving with this on the highway at night is an incredibly comforting experience. Almost surreal. Just you, the car, and the road endlessly going under your headlights.
Two weeks ago I was in LA, speeding down the San Bernardino freeway in the dark of night as I blasted Moby's New Dawn Fades. The glare from all the vehicle headlights reminded me of the headlight glow captured onscreen when Hanna flags down McCauley and invites him to ☕

And all I know is... all I know is there's no point in me going anywhere anymore if it's going to be alone... without you "
The way Michael Mann was able to weave all these love stories into a crime drama, without them dragging the whole film down, is just one more testament to the greatness of Heat.
@@c3bhm Really?... How would that work when most of the leads are dead, and any of those who weren't, are too old (or sick) to reprise their roles? A re-make, perhaps? It'd never work, either way...

He doesn't know it then but he sacrifices himself, killing Waingro and saving future victims. Incredible cinema, from start to finish.

You see him looking at the sea like if he knew there was no escape. I really wished he would have taken that plane with Eady, but I totally understand why he didn't. I've made that mistake too. It's that eternal fight of those little voices inside you, one telling you to let it go and the other one telling you that you shouldn't, while your "real" you, actually know you definitely should let it go, but you decide not to anyway. You see him struggling with that in the car while driving to the airport, then decides to get out of the highway to his death. That part stuck with me forever. Regardless, it was a master piece all over. The music is hypnotizing.
Great take, asterio. When I saw it for the first time and saw Neil's wheels start turning as he and Eady drive to the airport I thought, 'Ohhh, s#it.' Cause instinctively I knew then that Neil would not make it to the plane, as much as I wanted him to ☹
It was the clash of duty and love -- of his code and his desire. We've all been there. I just hope his decision is a reminder to us all --> keep going to the airport if you can.
I always think about how Natalie Portman (Lauren) is sitting at a bus stop and her dad picks her up to give her a lift, and she leans over the front seat and greets the other detective with total familiarity 'hey Mike'. To show that those two detectives had worked together a long time, and knew each other's families, etc. It was a simple, great way to get that point across.
This movie carries a special place in my heart, try to watch it at least once a year - this track is so evocative of it, I love it. Thank you for uploading.
I watch it once or twice every year. It's my favorite film ever since I first saw it on VHS in 2000. I've never seen anything like it. It is packed with so much ambience and emotion. When the last song hits and the credits roll, I feel like I went back in time to the first time I saw it. It's a perfect film.
The symphonic-electronic texture of the score is mesmerizing. I relish the comments that convey what viewing this movie in the cinema was like. Sadly, I never saw Heat in the theater because I was in a long term rehab from 1995-1996 - notwithstanding, I have a visceral experience when I watch Mann’s masterpiece on Television. The image of Neil standing in the dark, staring out at the dark Pacific Ocean is beautiful - somehow this single-image captures Neil’s condition “I am alone, but not lonely.” Michael Mann, a native Chicagoan, first movie was Thief - staring James Cann. Filmed with the same cool and moody night blue backdrop as Heat - Both movies, Thief ‘80 and Heat ‘95 capture my attention and emotion every time I watch them. Michael Mann recently completed Heat 2, a novel that serves as a sequel, a prequel, plus a recap of Heat. Thank you for this video and all of the comments. MK
I remember when my dad first rented Heat, and we were watching it with the surround sound going full tilt. I was so immersed into the film and laughed my ass off when the metal scene happens and Kilmer was drilling into the deposit and my mom who was falling asleep almost shit herself it woke her up so bad lol. Regardless, it was a master piece all over. The music is hypnotizing.
yes, I couldn`t agree more.
Great take, asterio. When I saw it for the first time and saw Neil's wheels start turning as he and Eady drive to the airport I thought, 'Ohhh, s#it.' Cause instinctively I knew then that Neil would not make it
to the plane, as much as I wanted him to ☹
The escape was FiJi, he just couldn’t make it there…
he had to give waingrow his due, i mean that was non-negotiable for a guy like mc cauley .... esp after what that RMF waingrow did to his mates
It was the clash of duty and love -- of his code and his desire. We've all been there. I just hope his decision is a reminder to us all --> keep going to the airport if you can.
Sometimes having no words says everything.
One of my fav movies of the entire 90s.
The peak of De Niro and Pacino's careers
Sad that we never gonna have this kind of film art anymore.
Makes me think about time, what's gone and what's possible , regret and hope
“Hey Slick…you see that shit coming outta their ears?? They can’t f***ing hear you!!..cool it!!”
Rest Easy Tom Sizemore Aka Michael Cheritto aka Slick
He was making a move. I had to get it on
"Say what, say what!?"
@@BoiseState5000I had to get it on
Michael Cheritto: Well ya know, for me, the action is the juice.
'Stop talking, OK Slick?'
This music just saved me,thank you. This movie can’t be forgotten throughout the time, absolute masterpiece.
I gotta say, I read the entirety of HEAT 2 with this on repeat.
It was absolutely perfect. 💯
This video is so Michael Mann. The music, the dramatic blurry image, the bluish tinted background.
That Serene and Beautiful Blue Hue that runs through the Movie...and the Music too. ⚘️💫⚡️
This movie carries a special place in my heart, try to watch it at least once a year - this track is so evocative of it, I love it. Thank you for uploading.
Can't believe i just wrote the same as the beginning of this comment.
@@micheledeidda2565 Good to know i'm not the only one who thinks this movie is special / awesome. :)
I watch it once or twice every year. It's my favorite film ever since I first saw it on VHS in 2000. I've never seen anything like it. It is packed with so much ambience and emotion. When the last song hits and the credits roll, I feel like I went back in time to the first time I saw it. It's a perfect film.
Watched this movie over 1000times and always catch a diffrent little detail seing it over again. Its just so many layers of whats going on.
me too brother, over 1000 times, no joking , it's my refuge
That Alienworlds has got a GREAT ASMR, and I got my head all the way up it
Hahaha !
RIP he was the bollocks of an actor. Amazing also in Natural Born Killers.
"Look at me...Look at me"
"Are your talking to me?"

“Look at me! Do you wanna get some pie?”
Easily one of the best films ever made. Michael Mann is a genius. This soundtrack compliments it perfectly 👌👌
The image of Neil standing in the dark, staring out at the dark Pacific Ocean is beautiful - somehow this single-image captures Neil’s condition “I am alone, but not lonely.”
Michael Mann, a native Chicagoan, first movie was Thief - staring James Cann.

Listened to this while taking off from Mallorca at sunrise, incredible.
Huge
"Theres a flip side to that coin"
I had always wanted to dwell on the opening of Elliot Goldenthal's score. Now I can thanks to you!
Me too the metro link train coming through the early morning... one of the best scenes in the movie.

Yes!
I’m 34 and hadn’t seen this movie until a couple weeks ago, I feel like…maybe this might be the best Michael Mann project ever
Of course it is !
Don't miss Collateral, with Tom Cruise.
Also see Public Enemies and Collateral.
Same boat, I just watched it recently in full for the first time. I've enjoyed everything I've seen from Mann, but this was special even for him!
I'm SOOOOOOO happy I stumbled across this
Was very underappreciated back then by Critics. But, this was a true masterpiece from wrting to cinematography.
Beautiful ambiance, really captures the movie's atmosphere
1967 painting "Pacific" by Alex Colville is alive with this score
Wow, this is so cool! I wonder if this sort of thing inspired Mann at all? It looks like the complete vibe for sure. Thanks for sharing this!
Love you both, RIP... great film
Chris is at my place. Listening to Heat Ambience.
This some big ass ambient... and I got my head all the way up it!

One of if not the very best movies I've ever watched on the big screen. Truly amazing masterpiece! 👏
One of the best movies in history…fantastic atmosphere and this track fits exactly to it
Amsterdam 1995, one of the most beautiful theaters of the world, the Artdeco Tuschinski theatre. What a night! What a moment in time..
I watched this for roughly 20 seconds and then just put on Heat. I highly recommend this video.
This Slick ain't no joke man
Not even Waingro gave this a thumbs down... excellent.
Always gives me chills on my neck and spine. Love this ambience.
I put this one when I drive at night. And I get to where I’m
Going without even realizing it. Absolutely captivating.
Beautiful - be sure you guys read Heat 2. Amazing, and it brought back so much of this emotion.
Fantastic book.
Excellent reminder. You see, "For me, the action is the juice. I'm in!"
Thanks for mentioning the book. Just ordered it.
It will be interesting to see who they get to play Wardell. They have to get a new Hanna, McCauley, Cherito and Shiherlis. Val, sadly is a little too old and sick. @@travisbickle1601
Heat 2?
Now for me - finding a comment like this at exactly the right time - IS the juice
Best ambience ever created
Brilliant film. Don't think there will ever be another one like it.
This was a SERIOUSLY underrated movie. I don't say that about a lot of movies (that phrase gets tossed around way to much, IMHO), but this movie should have received a lot more praise than it did.
Suprise!...the sequel/prequel is Manns next project. Get ready to be mystified again !
no way it can match the og man@@ericsilva2280

Multiple awards given to this movie.
This film is perfect...It's so perfect...
Sounds like something you'd listen to enjoying the view above Sunset Plaza.
Before covid when I used to travel half way around the world, I would always watch Heat to get me in the mood for the adventure, these guys did some crazy stuff, and now I'm about to do some crazy stuff too (not criminal though) I will go on my first big Asian trip for the first time in 3 years this coming Jan. Once again, I will watch this movie a couple of weeks before Going, just like I did pre covid, good ol days. Let's all pray for a good 2023
Try 'Boarding Gate'.
The only movie I ever watched twice in one week
this film is one life changing experience
Music makes you think about Critical Situations in Life.
The US Marine Corps (late 90s)
used a scene in this movie to teach new Marines, how to "assault through" an ambush using fire & maneuver.
Yes. That is how Good this movie is.
