It’s what companies have done with it - exploiting the idea to do the bare minimum work so they can later milk more money from their consumers. Good DLC does exist, ones that expand on or build upon a solid foundation - not ones that fix it or were withheld at the start despite being ready (I’m looking at _you_ day 1 DLC companies!).

I'll always remember that whole secret campaign in Command and Conquer Gold, where if you launched the game via command console with certain arguments you would be playing as NOD (iirc) fighting dinos. Still have no clue how I discovered that because I was like 12 and could barely check my e-mail with the limited internet we had, let alone look up game secrets.
Personally, i always wondered why the painted world from dark souls 1 wasn't sold as dlc. It was an optional area, and very scenic compared to the rest of the game. Plus it has one of the most interesting bosses.

Fallout 4's DLC is some of the most overpriced i've ever seen. i don't care how good Far Hardbor or Nukaworld is, I'm not paying $20-$25 for them. as for the workshop DLCs Why did bethesda even bother? the modding community could've done that and done them BETTER!
I always think of the secret gamedev dungeon in Dungeon Siege where you had to grab items from both the singleplayer campaign and the multiplayer one + the starting weapon of a new character to get access too. It was such an amazing hidden addition to the game!

Well in case of Creative Assembly it is not really color but blood is a DLC, they should have made it free or better so the blood stays on the battlefield and doesn't just disappear.
Doom II is partly set on Earth, the secret Wolfenstein levels open from the middle of the city. I was amazed at the Painted World of Ariamis. New environments, new enemies and a new boss… you might not ever meet playing through Dark Souls.
+Accelerator Well, I have a hunch that in Dark Souls potentially everyone deserves to die, including the protagonist. After my first playthrough I realized that the titular "dark souls" might be the characters themselves (besides the literal interpretation of the "Dark Soul").
Oh yes, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. That was a great game then, and it's still a pretty damn good game now. Hell I'd rather be playing that than any of the new Tomb Raider games. There's some games that are simply deserving of a modern remake and that would be one of them. Hell, that one would've probably made a decent movie... Probably not a great movie, but at least better than that one Indy movie we don't talk about.
Pyramid was a pretty tough one due to its open-world style, which could be a little hard to keep track of as a kid. It's probably the one I struggled with most back then, too. Strangely I struggled more with King Solomon's Mines when I played it again last year. Sadly the installer is unusable on modern systems, running on a particularly ancient version of something. DX3 or something? However a 3rd party patch is available to install the game, and a few patches and "rescue" saves are available from lucasarts with a little digging (the new site is entirely SW). Sadly my playthrough ended at the penultimate level (the infernal machine itself) due to one gamebreaking bug necessitating a rescue save be used (an elevator at the start of the level was missing, making it impossible to progress), thus losing all my weapons and being stuck with the new save's set (which was underwhelming - I had been frugal with my heavy weapons). I suspect some doors may have been broken further in the level too, and I wasn't keen on attempting a difficult puzzle level with no guarantee that it actually works.
I think that if 505 Games was the kind of developer that made DLC for extra cash, then the Skeletron (the wierd giant skelly head with arms) from Terraria would definitely be a DLC, seeing as you have to go to a temple, speak to the old guy at night and not go into the temple's basement before killing the boss, otherwise you'll die to a giant skeletal head. I know that this game is a relatively new one, however it does look a lot like some kind of DLC that they decided to add in to the main game.
Don't forget, not only does RE2 give you two different characters stories but they also both come in the A and B version. It's really four different playthroughs before even getting to the secret characters!

You see everybody doing shit and getting away with it, with their pockets full of money, but you don't do it too because you wanna show some respect for your costumers, I think that's awesome. Back in the day before DLC was king, there was something called expansions like DLC today you had to buy them but they were sold in stores not downloaded (for the most part). Some of these were authorized, some not, some where just someone collecting a lot of the best fan made levels putting them all together in one disk, and selling that to you. Back when internet speeds sucked and bandwidth was precious this was still a good deal.
I don't remember the Aztec level in Goldeneye having Jaws or any of that futuristic stuff. Instead I remember it being a proper Aztec temple, and at one point there was an insanely frustrating tile puzzle you had to navigate correctly (or you died) in order to get the Golden Gun, which was the only thing that could kill Baron Samedi (and trust me, I spent LOTS of attempts with infinite ammo machine guns trying to mow the bastard down). But even after you complete that level, the guy shows up again, perfectly alright and doing that freaking laugh
Stop whining. Games used to release at 40$, them they went to sixty and everybody whined a ton too. When you buy a game you are supporting the publisher and their work. It's really not bad with all the cheap asses file sharing on Xbox one.

I don't think this is just a list of secret levels. It's a list of secret levels that would likely be DLC nowadays. Not only would the cow level not really work as DLC imo but even in Diablo III which was made in the modern DLC era, the secret levels weren't DLC.
Even if this video is old but the best free level of all time is the whole mini campaign in Command & Conquer Red Alert with the ants. With unique enemies, multiple levels, story and cut scenes. Pretty hard too. I think it was unlocked by pressing somewhere on the title screen while holding Shift?
While I would have liked it if you detailed what you needed to do to get to these secret levels for each on the list, it was still a lovely top seven that tickled my nostalgia bone quite well.

2:30 Considering the UK's RAF's nuclear missiles were secured with only a bicycle lock key until 1998 and some US bomber units in the 1950's were instructed to attack Russia if they stopped receiving the "don't attack" order, I would say that having to complete a puzzle to launch a nuclear missile is pretty stringent for the times in which the game released. I'm not sure whether my faith in humanity is reinforced or lost by knowing this...
Some people seem to forget that before DLC and microtransactions, there were purchasable add-ons, which usually cost about half as much as the original game. Quake 2 had "The Reckoning" and "Ground Zero" as separate add-ons that were both nearly as big as the original game was. Same with the original Quake, Sin, Doom 3, Tomb Raider (1, 2 & 3), Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Diablo 1, 2 & 3, Starcraft 1 & 2, etc. Granted, the transactions were less 'micro' & you got a lot more than just little things like skins or an added level or two. Good times, lol.

No, that's a bad idea in general. DLC shouldn't stop, it should be done better. There are plenty of games that have done paid DLC well, Fallout: New Vegas, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Borderlands 1/2, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Endless Legend, Mass Effect 2/3, etc.
Some games do DLC great, like forementioned Borderlands, but then there are some like Fallout 4 with stuff like weapon racks and mannequins for armor that should've already been in the game. I just don't like the fact that a lot of developers hiding 25% of a game behind a paywall instead of adding another 20% to the game, allowing the consumers who want more to buy it
dlc are not that bad pre orders are worse. you could end up buying a broken game and some game companies are locking core pieces of the game to force you to pre order. like how the total war company put a core faction in pre order bonus TWICE unless you pre order or pay $5 in a later dlc.

Star Wars: Battlefront is seemingly the most notorious of a new game knowing that millions of people would buy this game and yet they still turned it into a DLC gangbang. Fallout's the Automotron DLC could have easily been a sidequest in the main game also.

2 missions in GTA San Andreas comes to mind. The first one is ofc the Jetpack mission, that would be a "pre-order now to recieve exclusive jetpack mission." I forgot about those. I was never able to complete the 1,000,000 stud level. I only completed the young Indy one.

Personally, i always wondered why the painted world from dark souls 1 wasn't sold as dlc. It was an optional area, and very scenic compared to the rest of the game. Plus it has one of the most interesting bosses.

Fallout 4's DLC is some of the most overpriced i've ever seen. i don't care how good Far Hardbor or Nukaworld is, I'm not paying $20-$25 for them. as for the workshop DLCs Why did bethesda even bother? the modding community could've done that and done them BETTER!
I always think of the secret gamedev dungeon in Dungeon Siege where you had to grab items from both the singleplayer campaign and the multiplayer one + the starting weapon of a new character to get access too. It was such an amazing hidden addition to the game!
This isn't a level really, but what would definitely be dlc was Play as the Green Goblin in the Spider-Man 2002 movie game. When I was a kid, I had no idea it existed. I unlocked it when I got older and was a blast to be the overpowered main villain without paying $15 for a "Ultimate Oscorp Bundle"

I was amazed at the Painted World of Ariamis. New environments, new enemies and a new boss… you might not ever meet playing through Dark Souls.

Oh yes, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. That was a great game then, and it's still a pretty damn good game now. Hell I'd rather be playing that than any of the new Tomb Raider games. There's some games that are simply deserving of a modern remake and that would be one of them. Hell, that one would've probably made a decent movie... Probably not a great movie, but at least better than that one Indy movie we don't talk about.
ikr never made it past the pyramide lvl but i was just a kid then lol
Pyramid was a pretty tough one due to its open-world style, which could be a little hard to keep track of as a kid. It's probably the one I struggled with most back then, too. Strangely I struggled more with King Solomon's Mines when I played it again last year. Sadly the installer is unusable on modern systems, running on a particularly ancient version of something. DX3 or something? However a 3rd party patch is available to install the game, and a few patches and "rescue" saves are available from lucasarts with a little digging (the new site is entirely SW).
Sadly my playthrough ended at the penultimate level (the infernal machine itself) due to one gamebreaking bug necessitating a rescue save be used (an elevator at the start of the level was missing, making it impossible to progress), thus losing all my weapons and being stuck with the new save's set (which was underwhelming - I had been frugal with my heavy weapons). I suspect some doors may have been broken further in the level too, and I wasn't keen on attempting a difficult puzzle level with no guarantee that it actually works.

I think that if 505 Games was the kind of developer that made DLC for extra cash, then the Skeletron (the wierd giant skelly head with arms) from Terraria would definitely be a DLC, seeing as you have to go to a temple, speak to the old guy at night and not go into the temple's basement before killing the boss, otherwise you'll die to a giant skeletal head. I know that this game is a relatively new one, however it does look a lot like some kind of DLC that they decided to add in to the main game.

Back in the day before DLC was king, there was something called expansions like DLC today you had to buy them but they were sold in stores not downloaded (for the most part). Some of these were authorized, some not, some where just someone collecting a lot of the best fan made levels putting them all together in one disk, and selling that to you. Back when internet speeds sucked and bandwidth was precious this was still a good deal.

Day of the Tentacle has a place where you can play the entire original Maniac Mansion.
I don't remember the Aztec level in Goldeneye having Jaws or any of that futuristic stuff. Instead I remember it being a proper Aztec temple, and at one point there was an insanely frustrating tile puzzle you had to navigate correctly (or you died) in order to get the Golden Gun, which was the only thing that could kill Baron Samedi (and trust me, I spent LOTS of attempts with infinite ammo machine guns trying to mow the bastard down). But even after you complete that level, the guy shows up again, perfectly alright and doing that freaking laugh

I don't think this is just a list of secret levels. It's a list of secret levels that would likely be DLC nowadays. Not only would the cow level not really work as DLC imo but even in Diablo III which was made in the modern DLC era, the secret levels weren't DLC.

Even if this video is old but the best free level of all time is the whole mini campaign in Command & Conquer Red Alert with the ants. With unique enemies, multiple levels, story and cut scenes. Pretty hard too.

Some people seem to forget that before DLC and microtransactions, there were purchasable add-ons, which usually cost about half as much as the original game. Quake 2 had "The Reckoning" and "Ground Zero" as separate add-ons that were both nearly as big as the original game was. Same with the original Quake, Sin, Doom 3, Tomb Raider (1, 2 & 3), Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, Diablo 1, 2 & 3, Starcraft 1 & 2, etc. Granted, the transactions were less 'micro' & you got a lot more than just little things like skins or an added level or two. Good times, lol.

There are plenty of games that have done paid DLC well, Fallout: New Vegas, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Borderlands 1/2, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Endless Legend, Mass Effect 2/3, etc.
Some games already have free dlc, like gta online for instance, every month or so they bring out a new dlc, and it's completely free.
Some games do DLC great, like forementioned Borderlands, but then there are some like Fallout 4 with stuff like weapon racks and mannequins for armor that should've already been in the game. I just don't like the fact that a lot of developers hiding 25% of a game behind a paywall instead of adding another 20% to the game, allowing the consumers who want more to buy it
dlc are not that bad pre orders are worse. you could end up buying a broken game and some game companies are locking core pieces of the game to force you to pre order. like how the total war company put a core faction in pre order bonus TWICE unless you pre order or pay $5 in a later dlc.

Star Wars: Battlefront is seemingly the most notorious of a new game knowing that millions of people would buy this game and yet they still turned it into a DLC gangbang. Fallout's the Automotron DLC could have easily been a sidequest in the main game also.
Very few games have DLC that are actually worth the money these days. It has certainly become the norm to pay more and more money for less and less content.
Wasn't the Fallout DLC originally a mod that the Developer's thought was cool and added it into the game along with a neat story.

2 missions in GTA San Andreas comes to mind. The first one is ofc the Jetpack mission, that would be a "pre-order now to recieve exclusive jetpack mission."
And the second mission would be the very advanced jetplane that you get through some mission. The jetplane that can take off just straight up, you know it turns it's wings and it can shoot missiles.
