- Want to make your own XL mousemat? XL / XXL mousemats too expensive? I mean the Steelseries mouse mats are like £30, and you can get a Xiaomi one off Gearbest for £7.
I wanted a leather XL mouse mat and I couldn't find many, so I made my own. As I was going to be making my own leather mouse mat I figured I'd record it and show you how I made my XL mouse pad.
A lot more time and effort went into making my own leather XL mouse mat than I initially realised, and I ended up spending more than I originally planned. If you don't have basic craft / DIY supplies like knives, glue etc then this could work out even more expensive. But DIY isn't about saving money, let's be honest. It's about making something honest with your own two hands.
I made my DIY XXL mousemat out of Scotch grain leather, cork backing and I used some Modge Podge to edge it. It wasn't hard at all - like most DIY projects I've embarked on, I found the most important thing to handle is patience. Plan your cuts, don't rush. Wait for the thing to fully dry.
If you're looking for a "how to make your own mousemat" then I hope this suffices. I made my own DIY XL leather mousemat and I couldn't be much happier. It's not perfect, but it's mine and it will hopefully give me many years of gaming. It sits nicely on my DIY PC desk.

good stuff. Not quite big enough for what I want to use it for. I just like the look of a giant desk covered in mouse pad material, even if it isn't necessarily going to be used for a mouse. My goal in the near future is to have one 6 ft X 3 1/2 ft, and 4 ft X 3 1/2 ft for an L shaped computer/tv desk.
The cheapest almost free mouse pad Iv'e ever made was one with a plastic folder (the ones with the slightly rough surface but great for gliding) and it feels amazing when using it.

The contact cement does not need any preasure to be maintained. Just press it really good the fisrt time. You can use a laminate roller to do this. Or even a baking roller can work, this is exactly why contact cement us used in laminates, ypu dont need to press it for any period of time after the initial bond.
I want to do my own mousepad too, but I would like to use neoprene or EVA foam and I've found that you can use texturized PVC on the bottom to prevent it gliding; do you know which kind of glue could be great to glue them together? I want to get something that is not too expensive but that won't come off later
@@OscarRamirez-yw6em eva foam will be eatern by the solvents on contact cement. Neopene wont. You need to first decide your 2 materials so we can give you a better advice.
also, what thickness will you be using (some glues can "eat" a little bit of the material and some other "sweat" over the surface if it is not thick enough
The easiest and cheapest big mouse pad I've found and use... an A2 cutting mat. Perfect friction, easy to clean and cheap as chips

my gf found some leather for 1 euro at a thrift store, now i just need a underlayer, but where i live the cork rols/mats are pretty expensive. but still if i find some secondhand cork mat for under 10 euros i wil still have a premium home-made mouse/keyboard mat:D

Well, this video made me realize I have to simply buy a mat.
Now I'm not that annoyed about the leather sheet on my desk. Its the same as that mousepad but all over my desk! The problem is it moves around with all the stuff on top of it and gets crooked easily.

My Logitech boasts about being able to work on anything, and so far the leather has been perfect.
Do you have any suggestions, how to make a "hybrid" pad, I'm an oldschool gamer and got used to hard pads during 2001-2010 gaming carrier, I push my mouse so freaking hard when I spray in csgo, that I can't use softpads.
I'm trying to find a hard pad with a cloth cover, ex alluminum core and just cloth on top.
I've been thinking of seperate the cloth from a QCK f.eks and glue it on a alluminum plate... haha

I'm pretty sure I just searched for "textured leather". You can try looking for scotch grain, sometimes I've heard of people calling it lychee grain.

Neoprene, foam rubber, craft foam. You could just have a big flap of leather if you wanted, it's your life :-)

do you meen for the mat it self or for the under-layer?
i googled it, seems pretty hardcore material, but the only downside from what i've seen that its a little on the thick side, for under-layer that is.
im making my own mouse mat with some leather, i've build one a month or 2 ago with allot of small bits of leather with the same rough texture as your leather without a under-layer , but that one didn't work so well because my mouse would get stuck on the edges of the leather seems.
now im making it with a big peace a bit smoother than yours from what i could see in the video, the leather alone is pretty nice but a nice piece of cork under it would be way better.
do you know any other material that would work just as nice as cork but is more squishy?

Leather, cork and glue? I bought the leather on eBay, the cork from a hobby shop and the glue from Homebase. You can definitely find all three things very easily in brick and mortar retail or online.
