  • The United States Naval Academy is a great place to visit. The noon meal formation is especially interesting. Bancroft Hall is the setting and the midshipmen are the stars. Be sure to attend the next time you're in Annapolis.

    United States Naval Academy:
The United States Naval Academy (USNA, Annapolis, or simply Navy) is a federal service academy adjacent to Annapolis, Maryland. Established on 10 October 1845, under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, it is the second oldest of the United States' five service academies, and educates officers for commissioning primarily into the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The 338-acre (137 ha) campus is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn at the confluence of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, 33 miles (53 km) east of Washington, D.C. and 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Baltimore. The entire campus (known to insiders as "the Yard") is a National Historic Landmark and home to many historic sites, buildings, and monuments. It replaced Philadelphia Naval Asylum, in Philadelphia, that served as the first United States Naval Academy from 1838 to 1845 when the Naval Academy formed in Annapolis.
Candidates for admission generally must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a Member of Congress. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as midshipmen. Tuition for midshipmen is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" (an abbreviation of the Ancient Roman word plebeian) enter the Academy each summer for the rigorous Plebe Summer. About 1,000 midshipmen graduate. Graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps, but a small number can also be cross-commissioned as officers in other U.S. services, and the services of allied nations. The United States Naval Academy has some of the highest paid graduates in the country according to starting salary. The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades midshipmen's performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Midshipmen are required to adhere to the academy's Honor Concept.

I speculate that Taiwan's naval academy transfered USNA's noon meal formation to it's one. Pretty similar, and I had performed it, stood in the middle of yard in the sunshine for many years, though. To be honest, I enjoyed it very much. Salute from Taiwanese veteran.

Not always so disciplined. One time in the summer of 74 when marching up the curved ramp into Bancroft the guy next to me started boogieing to the music. We were toward the back of our platoon (3 columns wide). He forgot there were men behind us marching as well, including the platoon commander of the platoon behind us. My friend had to brace up for the rest of the day. I don't remember the exact words, but it started with "Hey Mister!"

    It’s not Lunch Formation !
It is noon meal formation .
In the old days people came from all over the U.S. as now but there were more regional difference than now .
The term for lunch in another part of the country was dinner or supper .
So noon meal was the solution and traditions die hard in the Navy !

Seems like no one gets it right. Its NOT "all present and accounted for." Its either "all present" or "accounted for." The difference? When you say "all present" that means everyone's in the platoon is in the formation. When you say "all accounted for" that means there are those who are absent from the formation but you know where they are. How can you say that they're all there but some are absent from the formation? That would indicate a false report.

When I was there (70s), it was simply, "all present," even though there were some absent because of watch and such.
Maybe they're trying to cover all their bases? As in, "They are all here...oh, except for the ones who are not. But we know where they are, honest!"
Kind of like a lawyer saying, "each and every document" was timely filed.
