I am beginning to think you break rods on purpose just to show us how clever you are. Seriously a great video armed with your two recent vids there is no reason why we can't all make effective repairs when we break our rods. Thanks John.
- Haha. I can absolutely promise that I do not break anything on purpose. :P I hope these workshop videos are helpful to folks. Im just keeping myself busy whilst the weather is poor. ;)
Thanks for sharing this going to it a try , got a few broken carp rods I have kept for years and not throw them away thinking they would come in hand one day .
just finished, using this method on my Shimano 2,75 test, carp rod. It seems to hold up nicely, but havent tested it on the bank yet. I liked the detail and the explanation aspect of this video. Thanks from Copenhagen, Denmark.
Nicely done, I am going to work on my old rod soon. One thing I have learned is that quick set (5 minute) epoxy is not as strong as regular set. So if you are not doing an emergency repair, I would recommend standard epoxy.
Haven't read all the comments so is this was already mentioned>> Sorry!! This fix works much better if you use a piece of fiberglass rod to mend it instead of graphite!!! It flexes much more and will not break again so easy!! Learned this at a National rod building convention in a repair class!! Good luck!!
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup th-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
Love it. Like to see it in operation though. I'm certain that it will hold fine, but i get a kick out of seeing full success. Also yet another pallet use :). Appreciate your work John.
What an amazing craftsman you are. My short bush rod broke three eyes from the top and is very thin. I don’t know if she’s salvageable. Thanks for a terrific video !! 👌🤗
Shield Spear - You’re best off removing as little as possible from the rod. So if it’s a clean break you’re laughing. If it’s spit right down the blank it’s game over. 🤷🏻♂️
Cheers John. Just Carried out repair to my major craft UL spinning rod for perch £245 and only had it 3 months wasn’t happy. Give it a test over the weekend for some big perch! Watched a few videos but when the start talking and they turn out to be yanks I switch off 😂
Used a similar method to repair a very thin walled rod (Fox Rage Terminator Pro Light Game Spin Rod) which snapped on New Years day. I used a needle instead of a section from another rod with araldite to hold it place. Having seen the video I'll try binding over the break and applying more epoxy to strengthen the area either side of the break. Anyway thanks for posting the video, I'll know how to do mend a rod properly next time.
Ive just snapped an Ugly Stik boat rod, so think I will have a go at this repair. Putting epoxy onto your whipping works well with a teaspoon, load up the back of the spoon with epoxy and then rotate the rod in your holder, and slide the spoon slowly across the width of the braid. You will need to rotate the rod till the epoxy stops sagging. I find after rotating it for a few minutes, is enough, then check and rotate every 10 mins or so. Ends up really smooth and bubble free.
Hello John I tried that repair a few years ago on a much lighter rod and when I next caught a decent fish the rod broke on either side of the spigot.I landed the fish though, also I find that the tea stirrers you get in caffs work well when glueing always handy int workshop
Great video. I do my wrap jobs a little different just to make sure the braid is tied on both sides(just so it doesnt slide and keep the wind super tight. ) The most painful thing is using that Milwaukee diamond grip screw driver to mix the epoxy!!! Haha
I was just rewatching this repair vid. I've got a sea spin rod I usually keep in my work van for skive time it has an insert missing from one ring do you think I can replace the insert or have to be the complete ring
Martin Corcoran - I dawbed up the narrow end of the spigot and pushed it back up inside the butt section so it carried epoxy with it coating the inside of the blank. Then slid it down into place.
One way would be to wrap and epoxy carbon fibre tape around the spigot that goes in the butt end to increase the diameter of the taper. Then sand to fit, push back down to increase the gap, bleed in epoxy, pull out to secure, when cured sand the joint then fit the top section.
Iv lost the eye off the tip of my rod, will I have to replace the full eye? Think I am going to try fill the end with resin and drill and file it first but not sure how that will turn out, any tips?
Omg....don't make thing difficult. Replace the eye. You can get a repair kit with 3 different sizes of eyes with Ceramic guides and glue for less than $5. Five minutes time.
Great video John, what could I use for the exact same repair on a nomura samurai lure rod need a really thin dowl..? Any help appreciated 👍 spent ages eying it up and only had it a week before I manged to snap the tip off last night 😭
I know that it has been already mentioned but I always take the rings off of the top section and then slide it into the but section. Much simpler, no spigot and the repair automatically locks itself in place. Also you've still got a whole old spare section to use for something else.
Buy thread.......heck , get the color you want. I would only use dental floss in a situation where I was trout fishing for days , way back in the mountains and I didn't bring a backup rod. This would never happen because I'm always prepared for such situations.
From a Yorkshire man that’s been in Australia since I’m 7 some how makes me home sick when I hear a English man/woman voice lol great vid are the normura rods any good and do they make a spin model cheers

Just broke my trout rod (packing up the car) and this video is great! Very informative and accessible repair instructions.
Another good video John - full of little useful tips & tricks!
Trampster - Just trying to help out mate. 😉👍🏻🎣
Brilliant. Fascinating. A craftsman at work! 🎣
Nice quality video, no poncing around, no superglue nonsense, a proper job.
totally enjoyed that, your tutorials are brilliant
Now i know how my friend fixes my rods, thanks John.
The Autistic Angler - Haha. Now you know. 😉👍🏻
The next fish you catch is gonna be that much more satisfying! Excellent video and workmanship. I’m gonna do the same thing for my rod
The simplicity of the rod building /repair holders made out of old pallets are genius.
Hi John I've watched lots of rod repairs and I must say yours is the best I've seen explains every process properly brilliant. Cheers
Thanks for sharing this going to it a try , got a few broken carp rods I have kept for years and not throw them away thinking they would come in hand one day .

Outstanding repair, good luck with that rod!

We have just bought a power stick with a broken tip. I knew youd have a video to help. Thanks
I love this guy’s ethos. Well done 👍
followed this vid by step, bit of stop and pause and fixed my Sons Greys stalker rod, and yes it’s caught another decent carp, Thanks 👍

So looking forward to it mate Ty.
Just used this method to fix a 7wt fly rod. If it does the job ill be well happy! Good video and nice instructions cheers 👍
Top class lad
Just done the same on a 9ft
Black master that I broke 9in down.from tip
Hopefully it stays strong now

Still catching up another great video Thanks
- Too many folks throw away rather than repair and rebuild. Its a real shame.
Great vid/vlog..very interesting 👍👍

Yeah sir I threw away a rod once but I won't do it again after your video, thanks for the tip enjoy brother

nice video john
Brilliant video bud wondered how folk mend rods.

Chris Timms - Not many folks repair gear nowadays. They either pay someone else to or just replace it. 🤷🏻♂️

Cant wait to see it get used now. Ive never tried doing that, Well i dont have any broken rods laying about. (touch wood) i never do
- Fingers crossed this will never need to be used mate. ;)
wow thank you Great video
Guerline Mcbarnette - It is my pleasure. 😊👍🏻
Thanks John
Martin Corcoran - Any time mate 👍🏻😉
Nice job, I normally take the eyes off the top part, then slide it inside with epoxy. Then whip the eyes back on. Just like a quiver tip
- That sounds a good idea. 😊
I also do it this way.

Excellent job great repair! Tom
Thanks, bless you for that
I broke my 7ft rod and lost the broken end so cannot repair, its now a little over 5 feet so i use it as a jigging rod now 😁
Love the accent😆. I'm from America

- Replace the whole eye.
Dude I bet this is the strongest rod ever now.
Hi John, did you put epoxy on the bottom half of the Spegit before sliding it into the bottom section? Thanks
Martin Corcoran - I dawbed up the narrow end of the spigot and pushed it back up inside the butt section so it carried epoxy with it coating the inside of the blank. Then slid it down into place.
Could you use an 1/8” dowel between the eyes of the repair to line it up or do you prefer “eyes on the eyes”?
- Sure you can, anything to keep it straight. ;)
16:03, you can hear the small crack.. Whenever I hear that, I smell danger.
how did you manage to get rid of the 3-4 cm gap you between original rod sections that you had at 7:40 ?
One way would be to wrap and epoxy carbon fibre tape around the spigot that goes in the butt end to increase the diameter of the taper. Then sand to fit, push back down to increase the gap, bleed in epoxy, pull out to secure, when cured sand the joint then fit the top section.
Did it work when you fished with it?
I have a surf rod that broke and I was wondering if JB weld would work
Iv lost the eye off the tip of my rod, will I have to replace the full eye? Think I am going to try fill the end with resin and drill and file it first but not sure how that will turn out, any tips?
Omg....don't make thing difficult. Replace the eye. You can get a repair kit with 3 different sizes of eyes with Ceramic guides and glue for less than $5. Five minutes time.
John is this the same for the middle section of a beachcaster
Great instructions. If you don't mind me asking, where is you accent from?
I snapped a old old rod then I but the but section I sloted in and made a kayak rod
- Good thinking. ;)
Great video John, what could I use for the exact same repair on a nomura samurai lure rod need a really thin dowl..? Any help appreciated 👍 spent ages eying it up and only had it a week before I manged to snap the tip off last night 😭
if you have a finescale model shop nearby you will probably find something there. They deal in miniature stuff and supplies.
Hi my feeder rod as broke just below the eye can it be fixed
what make and model was the rod? Cheers!
I know that it has been already mentioned but I always take the rings off of the top section and then slide it into the but section. Much simpler, no spigot and the repair automatically locks itself in place. Also you've still got a whole old spare section to use for something else.
Nice vid how do you fix a broken rod eye
william m 06 - I change them out completely. I show that on the rod rebuild video. 😉👍🏻
@@thefishlockerworkshop the eye is not completely off it just a small snap it can still be used but always snaps the line
william m 06 - That is why it needs replacing. You will not fix the porcelain insert, you need to change the eye.
Thank u :)
I don't have thread, what I do have is dental floss and artificial sinew…will either work as a replacement for thread?
Embroidery thread maybe. Six strands.

Did i miss the parts where you removed and reattached the handle?
Tip: Regular epoxy fingerprints etc can be cleaned off with Surgical Spirit before it 100% cures.
Is that called rubbing alcohol?
@@suzannemartin5984 yes it is
Great, only issue for me is the section where my rod is broken is so thin I'm struggling to find a spigot
Same here
small nail maybe?
Cocktail stick works on thinner tips
This is my problem too. I was thinking of rooting through stuff and finding a strong wire maybe.
mine snapped right at the connection with the feeder tip and left a chunk inside the rod xD
Never cut a rod for a repair.
Never going to be as before, and you will never have confidence in that piece of gear. Bin it.
Id trust it if john fixed it
My girlfriend thinks you look like Jude Law
