  • www.ultralightf... - Valley Engineering, Culver Props, Swing Wing II, VW aircraft engine conversion and reduction drive. Dan Johnson talks to Alaina Lewis from Culver Props about Valley Engineering’s legal part 103 ultralight aircraft the Backyard Flyer and their new two place experimental aircraft during the E.A.A.’s Airventure convention.
The Backyard Flyer is usually powered by a four stroke, twin cylinder modified Generac engine. While it is a very fuel efficient and reliable engine it is also heavy.
The Hirth F23 on the other hand is considerably lighter, but still comes with electric start and a generating system. Performance has to be seen to be believed! The craft is airborne in as little as 50 feet and climbs out at well over 1,000 per minute.
Cruise still comes in at the legal ultralight speed limit, by the use of prop and or a throttle governing system. The Backyard Flyer features welded aluminum construction, with each craft hand built. The wing swings for ease of storage and transportation.
The Backyard Flyer is available in both a taildragger and tri-gear version and now as a two place experimental aircraft in a taildragger configuration.

I have always loved the backyard flyer and was wondering why they did not have a two place unit. I’m proud to see that the company went to this. Now I just need to save my pennies. One day I want to learn to fly in this awesome machine. If grandpa ever wants to teach someone please contact me! Always a fan , Curtis!

It's 2021 and I am reviewing this from several years ago. This man and his creation is pure genius! Watching him take off in his plane makes it clear that this is a well designed aircraft. It takes off in such a short distance it's a hotrod. Sadly I found out that it's no longer being produced for sale. No explanation given, and they owe us none, but only that it is no longer available. This is a sad loss to light aircraft enthusiast everywhere. I wish someone could obtain the building and production rights and distributorship for this beautiful plane.

@@ultralightnews I researched his passing away right after I posted my comment. I am sad for the loss to the family and the many aviation enthusiast. It's a great loss. Perhaps some day the Backyard Flyer could be revived but it's not near as important as losing their beloved father and grandfather. Thanks for your response.

I'm developing a few planes at the moment, when I tested welded aluminium structures on the public, there was quite the backlash.
Unwarranted, but myth and lore rein supreme in aviation.

We build every modern plane out of Aluminum as long was you use the right materials and welding techniques it's safe. Guys complaining about fatigue and cycle time are probably in their 70s and couldn't fly enough hours in the rest of their life to worry about it. Everything has gone to Aluminum, Bicycles, Motorcycles, Snowmobiles and even the F-150! It's perfectly fine for an ultralight or even LSA.

Yes he was, as soon as Grampa passed they quit. They have the very best design I have ever seen. If anyone knows who has one that they want to sell please reply. If they are not making I will reverse engineer and build them. They won't sell the jigs, won't build them.

Love the Flyer--I have not seen a tandem seating version, is there one? If not I imagine it would be easy to do.

I suggest upgrading the sound equipment, the one voice per channel is hard on us headphone wearers. Otherwise great video and interview.

I don't guess someone else would be able to "Reverse Engineering " this puppy..???.. Seems simple enough to get a decent airframe...The wing is just "Reverse Dihedral "...looks like 👍 👌...

Is Valley Engineering still in business? There's no reference to the planes on the main page anymore, and a secondary page that does have a link, it doesn't go anywhere.

They’re not available… while people are constructing these airframes and wings in the leisure of their garage and backyard. All you really need is an engine, reduction and propeller… these were designed such as you can acquire the plans and build it yourself
