    I'm 66 years old and do not have the budget for all the costs of flying. I did take and passed ground school w/the intention of flying. However, I never got over 11 hrs of left seat time. Today, getting my license is out of the question, however I LOVE flying. SO, in lieu of actual flying, I realized my dreams of flying vicariously through Microsoft flight simulator. I have dozens of planes at my disposal from a Cessna 150 ( Cessna 177 is my favorite single and Beech Duke is my favorite twin) to a DC-10 and can fly them all realistically, and I treat all these flights seriously. I follow all the rules of actual flight, ie, I don't do stupid, unrealistic things like try to land a DC-10 on my local airport's 2000' runway. I fly these planes as if they were REAL FLIGHTS. If I crash, I'm examining, what did I did wrong, etc. I don't have to worry about fuel, maintenance, hanger storage, and ownership costs and I can fly anytime I want. I've learned how to fly IFR in bad Wx for the challenge w/out the danger. The simulator fulfills all my desire to fly. It's a GREAT, very satisfying alternative to real flight.

      I highly suggest looking at paragliding.. If your knees aren't there anymore, then a paraglider trike.. Nice thing with them, is it's a glider first and foremost, so if you ever have a medical issue, you have a much better glide ratio/chance of reaching the ground alive. The wing new is going to be around ~3,000, you can find used trikes and engines for around 1500-2000 for the trike (although it's an easy thing to make yourself if you have any mechanical know-how) and a used engine for 3000-5000 and new for around 7000. I'm a big fan of the fresh breeze stuff because I like how they engineer quick detachments so if the engine for instance were on fire, you can release the engine to escape the fire. They fly slow, easily controlled, and you can get several hours of fly time, and land them in basically any field.

      Not to plug any specific group in their comments, but there are many groups in the Flight Sim community who do group flights and/or information sharing if you're ever interested. I've found everything from diehard ultra-realism airliner groups to Bush/STOL groups. I tend to linger around the later personally.

    Im nearly 80 and am a retired Alaskan bush piolet and have had a string of airplanes. Taildraggers rule. My first plane was a 1947 Luscomb 8 A C 65. Have a few hundred acreas of a farm up in the mountains. I miss flying and would love a legal Eagle. ( Or a Kolb) This is a very well done presentation and realisticaly accurate and responsible. Anyone in the air should be well versed on FARS. I subbed cause I like your perspective. I live in the NE mountains of Washington state 4 miles south of BC border. Have a lot of experiences that none if these town boys or flatlanders will ever experience. Like crabbing onto a small sand bar to pick up a hunter surrounded by trees. Haha Really miss my Super Cub's stol. Will be watching. Dandahermit

    17:30 😅 I was the kid who drove 12 hours to buy a paraglider off craigslist, and accidentally came home with 3 of them and taught myself with books and videos.. I'm glad I did it.. but damn I wish I would have saved more for the real training.. Years later I befriended another paraglider briefly (not many around here) and he was a certified instructor and started asking me questions and realizing i didn't have half the answers made me realize just how little i knew and how much risk I had been undertaking up until that point.. Lucky.. very lucky..
    Now I'm looking at doing a home build plane.. I'm happy to listen to ALL suggestions that cost less than 15k all in.. Less is better though

    I am trying to find an instructor for ultralight planes I live in saint Petersburg Florida and have tried different places in my city and all the way to Lakeland Florida without success. Do you have any suggestions? Is there a problem with ultralights that instructors are not interested in giving instructions??

    • @TheJonjonj
      @TheJonjonj  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not that there is a problem with them it's just GA general aviation pilots just don't usually like them and don't think they are safe! Are they more dangerous? Sure but it's how you do it that will reduce the risk and the fact you're looking for instructions tells me you will be fine! I would join local ultralight group on Facebook and reach out to them! Hopefully they can help

    Don't buy a belite .the plane looks good but built poorly. I bought an ultra cub in 2012 first it was shipped without a battery. Then when battery arrived it melted wires under the dash . I couldnt find the problem. Until the 4th time. When the builder put it together he did not crimp the main ground on the engine block. It was parked in our hanger. When it is first started and warmed up I always had a tail tie down. Just on idle it would vibrate 8-10 ft. To the right found that the prop was used it had a hub mark that did not match. My. Engine took it to a cfi and aircraft mech. It was way out of balance . The airframe was twisted. The tail wheel bolts were bent .the left main spar on the wing had 3/8 inch of slack up and down right before take off it would lift into position with a hard thump .brakes kept locking up problems were endless. I parked it for 3 months when I came back to clean it up check it over etc. the rivets between the cab area and fuselage had just fallen out or pulled thru just from south Texas heat. And it was completely in two pieces on the concrete floor. Sadly belites are buy as is. No refunds. Although James is a nice guy .he's not a good builder. And when he sees a sucker he takes advantage. Go with. Badlands. !!!

Badlands seems like an awesome little plane

      You can tell from the construction it’s a poorly designed airplane. Fully riveted fuselage with a 2 stroke engine is never a good idea,they vibrate loose. The foam and all the subpar building techniques are quite obvious if you look at any of the construction videos. They took a great patented kitfox lite and ruined it… thankfully badland aircraft has revived the design
