This song was written for the United States bicentennial, 1976. My understanding is that "Madame Blue" refers to the statue of Liberty which was tarnished a blue-green color. The song says that the U.S.A. is not a child anymore and should begin to act like a grown-up.
You know, the older I get, The more I appreciate Dennis's phenomenal talent in this band. I love them all, but his imagining of rock~n~roll took us to new places! And I loved it! It really opened my perspective on what could be. Well done, boys!
Styx is in my top ten groups! "Snow blind", "Castle Walls", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man", are just a few of their other songs. They have so many great songs! I could listen to them all night long! Thanks again ladies!
The current version of Styx out on tour still sound fantastic... more prog rock with the later albums without Dennis, but Tommy and James young and the rest of the band still sound fantastic. I saw them many times through the 80s, 90s and 2000s, they always put on great shows and have been a tight band with all their lineups. Lawrence Gowan is on keys and sings most of Dennis' parts and is a fantastic musician as well.
They have many great rockers. Their biggest hits are Renegade, Blue Collar Man, Mr Roboto and my favorite Miss America. They do both ballads and rockers.
You're right about all except Mr Roboto. Never recommend that song to anyone ever. It's an embarrassment and was the downfall of the band. Their all time low point.
@@DB-kl9bp I agree the whole Kikroy project was a mistake but I do like the song Mr Roboto. Dennis DeYoung kept wanting to get more theatrical and the rest of the guys just wanted to have a rock'n'roll band.
Hello ladies! Styx is a band from Chicago, where i was born and raised. Before becoming famous Styx actually played at my brother's prom! Great band that is still rocking today!!👍☮️😎
EPIC band!! Styx has 3 lead singers. Renegade, Come Sail Away.... 10 top 10 hits first ever rock ballad in Lady from 1972 and one of the very few bands to have top 10 hits in 3 different decades ( 70's, 80's and 90's). I will suggest their last top 10 hit " Show Mw The Way". I feel its one of the best and most powerful videos of the 90's. Watch the video its incredible. Thanks for playing and reviewing this great live version of Suite Madame Blue.
This song has a different meaning to me. I lost my youngest daughter in a car accident ten years ago. I’ve heard the song many times over the years but one day after her passing I actually listened to the words and when it gets to heavens door it hit me like a ton of bricks. I cry now when it gets to that part and stop the song. Thanks for reacting🙏🏼🌹🌹🌹
On 9/11 I left work early and made my hour and half commute home. This song came.on and I listened to the lyrics. It really hit in the moment. I don't know what inspired the song, but America wasn't a child anymore.
Most Styx songs should be viewed through the lens of this 1996 “Return to Paradise Theater” performance. In most cases, it’s the penultimate performance of each song.
Dennis DeYoung wrote this in 1975 as America was gearing up for its bicentennial celebration in 1976. The song is not a celebration of the event, but a look at how it was being exploited.
In 1975 The Deep State got publicly exposed via the Church Committee. The US govt intelligence agencies abuse of power were ridiculous. The FBI, CIA, NSA, IRS, etc. think they are gods, and above accountability... and they probably are.
Awesome song I had the DVD to this concert which was fantastic, I saw them 3 times in N.Y. great reaction ladies y'all look beautiful today as always keep on rocking
I would think the song Lady may be a song you may recognized. Dennis wrote it for his wife and it's a sing we all would love sung to us. I have seen Styx several times over the years. We toon our sons to this concert. My grandson recently went witb me to a Styx show...so good! Dennis DeYoung has one of the best rock voices and gets overlooked.
I was lucky enough to be around in the heyday of Styx, got to see them twice in the 70's, and Dennis DeYoung I saw in the early to mid 2000's at Rockin' the Rivers...they were my go to 8-track to throw when I was cruisin' main back then...Rock ON!!
Styx is one of my all time favorite bands, thank you for reacting to them, and I hope to see more. They combine a classical influence on keyboard with driving rock drums and guitar plus great vocals. One of the very few bands where I'd buy the latest album before I'd heard any songs from it; was never disappointed.
Like Journey, just as great on vocals live as in the studio. My favorite song by Styx since I was a young pup. Listen to, "Best of times, "Don't let it end" "Babe" or, "Show me the way" to understand what I am talking about.
Also a heavier song (with a mellow start): “Miss America.” And “Crystal Ball” runs the gamut from soft to loud, and showcases another of the band’s strong voices, Tommy Shaw (who is playing the double-neck guitar in “Suite Madame Blue”). And from the Paradise Theater album, “Rockin’ the Paradise” (with the brief lead-in song “A.D. 1928”) and “Too Much Time on My Hands” are louder and more up-tempo. Great band. “Blue Collar Man,” as others have suggested, would be an excellent next listen. Enjoying your channel-thanks for all the time you put into it.
We were all waiting for you to continue because the harder part was about to begin, haha! Styx does all kinds of rock! “Come Sail Away” is my favorite Styx song.
I would recommend “Man in the Wilderness” by Styx. Tommy Shaw shares an interesting story about how this song originated during a tour that Styx was doing with Kansas.
Hi Lulu, huge Styx fan here. I put quite a bit of coments for your reaction to "Lady" live from Winterland in 1978, including that it was the first power ballad in music history. This performance was from the 1996 "Return To Paradise" tour when the "classic" lineup(except the drummer John Panozzo who was very ill and passed away during the tour) got back together after splitting up in 1983. It is an awesome live performance with a lot better recording equipment than the outdoor Winterland one from 1978. So even though it was 20 years after many of the songs were first released, they still sound great. Todd Sucherman was a Styx fan before joining so he knew most of their songs, and he is one of the best drummers ever - nowadays he also is a recording studio drummer for many artists, performs quite a bit outside of Styx, and he gives master classes in drumming and releases videos of his drumming with Styx in concert. He was Modern Drummer's best drummer of the year 10 times. For "Suite: Madame Blue" the Suite refers to a composition of music that has a number of different parts, "movements", that make up the whole. There is actually another part to it, an intro. track written and performed by John Curulewski on Styx's "Equinox" album. John C. was a founding member who left to pursue a solo career and that's when Tommy Shaw joined to tour in support of the "Equinox" album. This song also follows a loose characteristic of many of Styx's songs, in that they start out slow, build up, and then explode in full rockin'-out mode. Another aspect of many of their songs is that they are inspirational, upbeat, and even when dealing with a hard message or times they have a hopeful, "things will get better" attitude before the end. "Come Sail Away" is a popular song of theirs and is the "heart" of Styx and Styx fans. Check it out in the same "Return To Paradise" tour concert and see the energy the Band has with their fans. Styx has a wide variety of song styles, and has plenty of hard-rocking ones. "Blue Collar Man" is a Tommy Shaw song that rocks along with one of Styx's most popular song, "Renegade", . "The Grand Illusion", "Queen Of Spades" and "Born For Adventure" are some of Dennis DeYoung's more rockin' songs. James "JY" Young is the hard-rocker lead singer/songwriter of the group with songs like "Miss America", "Young Man", "Snowblind", "Man Of Miracles", "Half-Penny Two Penny", and "Midnight Ride". There are also some deep cuts and outliers that are very good and popular with fans. Back then there was Album-Oriented Rock, so we listened to whole albums at a time. Many of the fan favorites were never hits, never released as singles, and rarely if ever performed live. This includes "Man In The Wilderness", "CASTLE WALLS", "A Day", "Best Thing", "Boat On The River", "Love In The Midnight", "The Grove Of Eglantine", and "Clair De Lune/Ballerina". For what I say are "combo" songs, songs that have a combination of slow, conteplating, ballad-like parts; and more up-tempo rockin' parts are songs such as: "Crystal Ball", "Fooling Yourself", "Come Sail Away", "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue", "Pieces Of Eight", and "Light Up". I could go on for a year, but I'll yet you get on to more music.
Some of the songs you might be familiar with is their 1980 hit "Babe " also "Lady ", "Too much time on my hands " and the "Grand Illusion " ❤ your reactions. Have a great day!
Styx was never a raging heavy rock band... they were comparable to Queen - a mix of rock & pop w/ vocal harmonies... 'South Park' made them famous again in the 90's after Eric Cartman sang 'Come sail away' by Styx on one episode. Former singer/ keyboardist Dennis DeYoung was like Elton John - he would croon the romantic ballads like 'Lady' ... 'Babe'... He also wrote the sci-fi Styx album 'Kilroy was here' in 1983 which yielded one of their biggest hits - 'Mr. Roboto'. Styx debuted in 1972... and broke big in 1977 w/ their 7th studio album 'The Grand illusion'... which sold 3x platinum in the US, despite critics in the press hating their music... They were playing arenas and stadiums in the 70's and early 80's and scored back-to-back 3x platinum records - 'Pieces of eight' (1978)... 'Cornerstone' (1979)... and 'Paradise Theater (1981) 'Kilroy was here' (1983) sold platinum but endured a backlash for its experimental direction. Styx's 'Greatest Hits' album has sold 2x platinum to date. Styx was formed in Illinois by Dennis DeYoung (vocals/ keyboards) and James 'J.Y.' Young (guitar/ vocals)... Tommy Shaw (guitar/ vocals) joined in 1975 and was a key member who helped Styx deliver songs that made them a sensation... Shaw left the band in 1984 and eventually rejoined Styx in 1995... Their original drummer John Panozzo passed away in 1996... Chuck Panozzo (bass) is still a member but does not tour w/ the band anymore. Dennis DeYoung was fired in 1999 after he declined to tour ... he performs as a solo artist nowadays. Styx still records and tours w/ Tommy Shaw, J.Y. and Todd Sucherman (drums), Lawrence Gowan (vocals/ keyboards). Some of the memorable hits by Styx - 'Renegade' ... 'The best of times' ... 'Blue collar man'
Oh, I'm writing this before I watch the video. I bet Lu Lu will like this one. She seems to like Dennis Deyoung. She'd probably like "Come Sail Away" and "Light up everybody" too. Not to mention "Mr Roboto". BTW Lu Lu watched "Lady". A song Dennis wrote about his wide. Yes, it's a slow tune.
wow, so glad you chose this song, used to play that over and over when I first bought that album it was on. Your choices are getting better and better and your reacting, too!!!
“Miss America”, “Man In the Wilderness”, “Renegade”, “Blue Collar Man”, “Angry Young Man”, “The Grand Illusion”, and “Crystal Ball” are all great more rocking songs.
💜💜💜💜💜 Love STYX! Try "Babe", "Come Sail Away", "Grand Illusion", "The Best Of Times", "Too Much Time On My Hands" and "Fooling Yourself" (love Tommy Shaw singing).
I remember hearing this backbwhen it came out and the only station that would play it also included Prelude 12 as the intro to the song. Equinox to Paradise Theater are the best albums. All had great songs and all featured James Young, Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung's outstanding vocals as well as JY and Tommy's guitar work. Got to see the Cornerstone tour in 1979, and then Paradise Theater tour and they rocked. For something harder, Miss America, Renegade, Queen Of Spades, Come Sail Away are good choices.
Born for Adventure on Equinox, Queen of Spades on Cornerstone. They have so much amazing music mostly due to Dennis DeYoungs writing & composing, who they later fired from the band he co- founded over "creative differences. Very sad story.
Personally my favorite of all their albums is Paradise Theater came out in early 1981. The whole album is phenomenal, just go to the paradise album, enough said.
Todd Sucherman was on drums in this, so this was more than likely from the Return to Paradise album in '95. He replaced John Panozzo after he lost his battle with alcohol. Basically, it's a live album with two new studio recordings. I suggest you try On My Way from that.
More upbeat, harder songs would be sung by either Tommy Shaw (the one with the double neck guitar) or James (JY) Young. Some harder songs: Renegade, Miss America, Queen Of Spades, Blue Collar Man, Great White Hope.
This Isn't a ballad, it's one of the finest examples of progressive rock! Just as Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven starts slowly, but finishes with a roar, so does this classic! Glad to see you folks enjoyed it. If you want something up-tempo from the get-go, I'd suggest Blue Collar Man, a song most of us can relate to. These guys are one of the best live arena rock bands, so I'm going to offer up another live performance: th-cam.com/video/CDM6v1XhWEg/w-d-xo.html
This is the "Caught in the Act" live album Dennis holds the last "Moooooooore" 47 seconds.😲 I've had the privilege of seeing them three times. Twice with the original line up, including John 😇, and once with Lawrene Gowan. Dennis was better, but they still rock.
Lulu reacted to Lady for her solo. It's similar to Suite Madame Blue. There are soft parts, but it gets harder for segments. Styx is mostly a hard rock band, but did their share of ballads. Come Sail Away is probably their most well known hit. Try these harder songs: The Grand Illusion, Miss America, Renegade, Blue Collar Man.
If you want heavier, on the Grand Illusion album there is a song not many know call Miss America that is pretty heavy. Otherwise, yes, Renegade off the Pieces Of Eight album that came after Grand Illusion is also a good choice. Huge Styx fan here. Grand Illusion will always be my favorite album.
Try the song “LADY” is a ballad & for a good rocker “LORELI” is one of their greats. Studio versions would be best. Dennis’ vocal on lady is absolutely incredible. You know his vocal on pretty much any older STYX songs is great stuff.
The wonderfulness of being a viewer is helping you fine ladies. The long note is 25 seconds long from 4:15 =4:40. Lulu the answer to Lady is yes and no. Like this song it has both soft and hard edges. I have written on the Lady video, once more I suggest Lorelei from the album Equinox. Have a great day.
I am glad yall did this song, I like it. I just thought of another song suggestion for the future reactions: An REO Speedwagon song called Golden Country.
Saw this tour(mid 1990s, I remember Dennis DeYoung's " suit "). This is Styx's best song, Styx at their most theatrical and proggiest. And, Styx is so much better live
Not my favorite performance; this is from the 1996 reunion tour, and Dennis DeYoung (songwriter/vocals/keyboards) is being a showoff and stretching it out too long. The original performance on the "Equinox" album or the live show from Winterland in San Francisco in 1976 have more punch. This may also be because original drummer John Panozzo isn't here, as the alcohol abuse that killed him a few years later had driven him out of the band by now. His replacement (Todd Suchermann) has his fans, but Todd just isn't driving the song here. Mid, at best. I would avoid this show if possible; there are numerous pre-1985 shows available on video. Plus there's no reason not to do album versions. I'm sure you will get a lot requests for the Big Hits, so let me give you some hidden gems others might not recommend Quick is the Beat of My Heart (1972) A Day (1972) The Grove of Eglantine (1973) Golden Lark (1974) Born for Adventure (1975) Put Me On (1976) Miss America (1977) I'm O.K. (1978) Lights (1979) Half-penny, Two-penny/A.D. 1958 (live performance please) and, skipping ahead, Everything is Cool (1999) Enjoy!
This is sugary Styx with Denis singing. I have liked Styx from The Pieces of Eight album. I much prefer Styx with Tommy Shaw singing songs like Blue Collar,Man and Renegade real rock.
Lorelei..........Lady... great songs from their early albums.. these guys grew up in the next town over from me.... they're from Northbrook illinois, I'm from Wheeling.

Tommy Shaw is the lead on most of their harder songs. Renegade is a good one to check out.
Except for Miss America and Snowblind. Miss America is James Young, and Snowblind he and Tommy share half and half.
Styx is an awesome band!! This song, along with “Crystal Ball” and “The Best of Times” are my favorites!! Rock on Ladies! 🤘
Kathy's face on the long hold of "mourn" was awesome. Enjoyed it as always.
Mourn?
Conquered the world and MORE.
unless you are talking about a different part of the song.
Hello ladies! Styx is a band from Chicago, where i was born and raised. Before becoming famous Styx actually played at my brother's prom! Great band that is still rocking today!!👍☮️😎
When Chicago was a great American city.

Thanks for playing and reviewing this great live version of Suite Madame Blue.
For heavier songs from Styx, recommend - Renegade and Blue Collar Man
"Miss America" as well. "Come sail away" also changes tempo like this one.
This song has a different meaning to me. I lost my youngest daughter in a car accident ten years ago. I’ve heard the song many times over the years but one day after her passing I actually listened to the words and when it gets to heavens door it hit me like a ton of bricks. Come Sail Away gives you perfect vocals And heavy rock all in one. Just discovered your channel and great reactions. 🎤💯🎶

"you considered the world... AND MORE, HEAVENS DOOR"
this is obviously a reference to landing on the Moon.

Enjoying your channel-thanks for all the time you put into it.
Just saw them in concert recently, they are as good as ever.
Awesome
My absolute favorite band Ive seen them 3 times
Glad for y'all to be hearing them now. America...Miss America -next.
Lady, Come Sail Away, Lorelei, Sing for a Day, Mademoiselle... all of those should be sampled on here.
this was 1 of the 1st songs written for a 200th bday...lol short blonde is Tommy Shaw fantastic singer too
We were all waiting for you to continue because the harder part was about to begin, haha!
Styx does all kinds of rock!
“Come Sail Away” is my favorite Styx song.
One of there rocking songs is Miss America
Great song. Styx is a great band.
Speechless....
Pretty sure Lulu did their song Lady, which is one of their slowest ballads, and yes they do do bangers as well.
Lady is a power ballad. I wouldn't say one of there slower ballads IMHO.
You probably heard come sail away before. Other songs, Blue collar man, Renegade, Lady on and on. Great reaction!
I would recommend “Man in the Wilderness” by Styx. Tommy Shaw shares an interesting story about how this song originated during a tour that Styx was doing with Kansas.
Renegade....Blue Collar man
Hi Lulu, huge Styx fan here.
This is one of my favorite Styx songs.
Some of the songs you might be familiar with is their 1980 hit "Babe " also "Lady ", "Too much time on my hands " and the "Grand Illusion " ❤ your reactions. Have a great day!
Thanks

💜💜💜💜💜 Love STYX! Try "Babe", "Come Sail Away", "Grand Illusion", "The Best Of Times", "Too Much Time On My Hands" and "Fooling Yourself" (love Tommy Shaw singing).
"Lady", "Come sail away", "Renegade".
One of their upbeat songs is Blue Collar Man.
Love “Miss America”…highly underrated and underplayed song!
Great tune!
Renegade definitely needs to be next
Snowblind, Renegade, Too much Time on My Hands, Blue Collar Man.
Their album EQUINOX is maybe their greatest imo
It's from the album Equinox and my favorite song on that is Born from adventure but that all album is fabulous.
CAN HE SING? YES HE CAN LOL!!!!! I LOVE STYX
I have never seen that version! Wow, thanks!
great band
This is the "Caught in the Act" live album Dennis holds the last "Moooooooore" 47 seconds.😲
I've had the privilege of seeing them three times. Twice with the original line up, including John 😇, and once with Lawrene Gowan. Dennis was better, but they still rock.
Ok girls,so you wanna jam! Play Miss America by this band and it will make the hair on the back of your neck stand straight up!
Styx-queen of spades
Lulu reacted to Lady for her solo. It's similar to Suite Madame Blue. There are soft parts, but it gets harder for segments. Styx is mostly a hard rock band, but did their share of ballads. Come Sail Away is probably their most well known hit. Try these harder songs: The Grand Illusion, Miss America, Renegade, Blue Collar Man.
“….her black widow’s curse might find you yet…”
Miss America, mirror mirror. But this song picks up.
Lots of good Styx songs out there. I would suggest "Crystal Ball"
Thanks for the info
Crystal ball is one of my favorites
I am glad yall did this song, I like it. I just thought of another song suggestion for the future reactions: An REO Speedwagon song called Golden Country.
A song about America.
Any song off of "CRYSTAL BALL" or "GRAND ILLUSION" would be good choices, not a bad song on either album
Saw them 3 times two with reo speed wagon.
Renegade is a little harder. Styx was kind of theatrical with albums that were played like story.
❤
Saw this tour(mid 1990s, I remember Dennis DeYoung's " suit "). This is Styx's best song, Styx at their most theatrical and proggiest. And, Styx is so much better live
I was number #18
❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😢😮😅😊
I'm sure you will get a lot requests for the Big Hits, so let me give you some hidden gems others might not recommend
Quick is the Beat of My Heart (1972)
A Day (1972)
The Grove of Eglantine (1973)
Golden Lark (1974)
Born for Adventure (1975)
Put Me On (1976)
Miss America (1977)
I'm O.K. (1978)
Lights (1979)
Half-penny, Two-penny/A.D. 1958 (live performance please)
and, skipping ahead,
Everything is Cool (1999)
Enjoy!
This is sugary Styx with Denis singing. I have liked Styx from The Pieces of Eight album. I much prefer Styx with Tommy Shaw singing songs like Blue Collar,Man and Renegade real rock.
Hahaha you put her on the spot. Haha. Styx has a bunch of hits. I just don’t like Mr roboto….NO JUST DONT. Liked
What happened to the great music?
Lorelei..........Lady... great songs from their early albums.. these guys grew up in the next town over from me.... they're from Northbrook illinois, I'm from Wheeling.
