Dennis De Young left Styx in 1999. He was replaced by Lawrence Gowan on keyboards and have included some of his songs in their repertoire. Songs like "Criminal Mind" "Strange Animal" "Moonlight Desires" "Awake The Giant" just to name a few.

The song was written about the Bicentennial (1976) and it reflects on the role "America" played in world events and the downfall (at that time) of the country due to Viet Nam, Watergate, gas shortages, inflation etc. and that our best may be behind us. Much like it is today, unfortunately.

Enjoyed your reaction. I was a big fan of Styx in high school and this was one of my favorites. Loved Dennis's work but also loved the songs that Tommy Shaw penned and sang. As time went on there was growing tension between Dennis and the band. Dennis is a big fan of Broadway musicals and his voice is so perfect for that genre (as shown by his musical theater work later in his career). You can see more of that theatrical style creeping into their music, especially their latter albums Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here. Eventually they permanently split and after a lawsuit, the other band members go the rights to the name Styx and Dennis could use it as a descriptive term in any of his solo endeavors (like Dennis DeYoung and the music of Styx).

It is, and has been commonly called Styx"s Stairway To Heaven. You nailed that analogy. Styx also didn't rip off Stairway because it was written prior to Stairway To Heaven. It was on the Equinox album. Dennis wrote it for the Bicentennial. The song basically is about after 200 years our country has completely lost its innocence. Great song and great commentary. You both were all over this. Thank you

Okay just for clarification, Styx has many singers, the main singers are of course Dennis DeYoung but Tommy Shaw playing the double neck guitar is equally recognized as a lead singer. James Young has some songs (Miss America) he's lead on as well. I went to see Styx many times in the early days before the breakup and also saw this reunion tour. They are one of the few bands that can replicate almost exactly a song in concert and almost indistinguishable from the studio version. You have to be there to understand how those synths rumble the ground and your whole body.

    Its just Styx.
The song was written in the mid 70s, after the debacle of Vietnam, Watergate had just happened with Nixon being forced to resign, the gas shortages and long lines due to the Arab Oil embargo etc etc. This song was CRITICAL of America and our tendency to intercede in Civil Wars all over the world. So yes, Madame Blue was the Statue of Liberty, ie America. Styx/DeYoung was saying "we can do better, we are better than this".
Back in the 60s and 70s, folk and rock artists used their music to speak out about politics and societal wrongs quite frequently without fear of being "CANCELED" by the extreme fascist right wing.
See similar songs from the 70s criticizing the USA actions and policies in:
    KANSAS>SONG FOR AMERICA
    REO SPEEDWAGON>GOLDEN COUNTRY
    CHICAGO>DIALOGUE 1+II
    CCR (CREDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL)>FORTUNATE SON
    NEIL YOUNG>OHIO
    and Canada's own
    GUESS WHO>AMERICAN WOMAN
These songs were all critical of American policies, much of it due to the Vietnam War, which cost the US 50,000 American lives for nothing. These were SERIOUS songs. If they were written today, the MAGA EXTREMISTS WOULD LITERALLY TRY TO CENSOR AND CANCEL THEM!!
This live version is good, but its stretched out and milked a bit too much. I prefer the original album version, its much more effective and sounds more like the Progressive Rock song it was meant to be.
Styx' most Prog songs were this, Come Sail Away, Castle Walls, Man in the Wilderness.

My favorites by this group will always be Too Much Time On My Hands and Renegade - both written and sung by Tommy. I'm a drummer by trade. I'm not a songwriter. Neither are most drummers. It's definitely difficult to sing and drum at the same time. I don't know how guitar players do it. More power to 'em

I'm 63 and I've heard all of it of course from the '50s '40s even... Down to the Elvis's, through the Mick Jagger's, and all of the European invasion...
Styx is my number one, but not because of Dennis DeYoung, as styx was good for firing him since he was a non-negotiator, there's always that One person in the band that has to mess things up... But regardless Tommy Shaw has resurrected the band and they continue today.
Fooling yourself, Castle walls, sail away, boat on a river, and more... Tommy Shaw considered a lot of the songs as themed with religion overtones..
That's really what he wanted to keep with the group and stuff like Mr roboto, Lady, and this one Madame Blue were pushing a different direction. And styx as a group was working hard at other stuff and Dennis DeYoung was working on his stuff but didn't want to go off and do solos. And according to Tommy, Dennis always has an excuse as why he couldn't go out on his own and do stuff and leave the group alone for some time so that they can do their stuff so they were basically two groups in one. And like Tommy said it gets ugly in a divorce.
So they decided to fire Dennis and Dennis sued them and they all settled out of court and according to Tommy they're happy without him and they don't really see him returning which in their mind is fine.. because of the fact that Dennis is too hard to work with you know when you have someone that has to have everything their way or the highway that's what you get..
Nobody's saying they both don't have talent of course everybody has talent that is associated to this group..
But this will be my favorite group number one at the top even without Dennis. But I do love Madame Blue..
On a side note, I met the group Lynyrd Skynyrd at there apartment in 1970 in Jacksonville Florida as a kid. They have a few records mounted on the wall and said look at this one it's gold. Lol

They were my favorite band until I discovered Rush. 🤦🏻‍♂️ but unfortunately I don’t think Styx will get in the hall of fame due to the behind the scenes drama….. unless TH-camrs like yourselves watch more and more and garner a following that will show Styx to be instrumental in rock music through writing, hits, and inspiration. Let’s make it happen.

Dennis wrote this Song it came out and America was Celebrating 200 years of freedom there are 2 Albums during that time for Styx Equinox and Tommy Shaw had joined them for that tour then came The Crystal Ball Album which Tomm big part of the album the song Crystal Ball at that time in my life was when I was having serious Health Issues and after Major Surgery wasn’t able to go back to school yet recovering but my older Brother had this Awesome Classic Rock Album collection so nobody home during week but me and I was having my own course of learning Music Especially the Classic Rock ones he had both of those Albums and I would study Hard and very loud and both of those Albums are Rock’n after listening to them you would feel the need to Put Your Rock’n Shoes on as one Song pointed out and another Song from Crystal Ball would have You “ Turn me on to your Brand New Record Album and Play me Loud Don’t You Worry About Your Neighbors and I did exactly what the Songs were telling me to do! Also you started those Albums from very first song and Always listen all the way through! I became a Styx Fan it got harder down the line when Dennis wanted to take Styx to Broadway and combine the 2! As far as your trivia question I have a trivia question for Y’all. When did Tommy Shaw leave Styx ? I am going ahead and answer in 1983 Dennis had grabbed control of the Band and it was his way only and The Mr. Roboto album the start Dennis had done the Unthinkable and shoved Styx into Broadway almost at first performances were small Theaters and the Band was loosing money so to get on the Summer Rock Festivals he wanted to take his new direction and that summer in Texas Dallas and then Houston there were The Texxas Jams a Music Festival at football stadiums always had Great lineups in 1983 I had already attended 4 of these Events and Bands brought their Rock’n Shoes that one Sammy Hagar was co heading Styx the other co headers it was always over a hundred degrees even Hotter in The Cotton Bowl 2 of my very favorite Bands Triumph had just 2 weeks before played The US Festival and with The Top Hard Rock Bands and they had Best Performance of tha Day some Bands had kicked off the Day and Triumph was Near Perfect and 70 thousand got going then Ted Nugent Rocked the crowd Sammy Hagar who was a Texxas Jam Favorite just put on the Performance of his career and had the 70 thousand Rock Fans going and his encore he brought out Rik Emmet and Ted Nugent and Sammy Rocked a Led Zeppelin Song I had never seen a crowd just going nuts during that song and to me who got to attend 9 Texxas Jams that Performance stands out then we waited a while for Styx and finally it started with like a video of Kilroy this place where music not allowed and then there was a little acting about Kilroy and I had never heard that much booing and thousands of people are leaving by time Band started playing they were playing to the backs of a lot of Fans we stayed well there was to many people leaving and I wanted to see JY Young and Tommy Shaw I felt really bad for them that was Saturday and Sunday Houston is only 4 and half hours Away and the same show same reaction for Dennis version of Styx not long after that Tommy left Styx he had a Good solo career for a couple of years but here is where I should be Thanking Dennis because Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades of N. R. and Ted Nugent formed The Damn Yankees and they were Awesome you just have to listen to the Damn Yankees Super Group and then 1996 original Styx members from Best era all but original drummer he was twin brother of the Bass player for Styx he died that year and I Loved seeing them go back and visit the Grand Illusion album and then Return to Paradise not very long after those Successful comeback Dennis had become allergic to the lighting he was also running Broadway play and the time for Styx to go back out Dennis couldn’t find out what was causing headaches I am sure running back and forth attending his Broadway play.

I've seen Styx 3 times in concert... twice in the 70s and again in 2019. I far prefer their studio versions, especially of this song which is my favorite by them. I would suggest Crystal Ball, the studio version of course.

Styx sang quite a bit about the "myth" of Americas greatness. They were fixated on this theme throughout their music. The "Grand Illusion", so to speak.

I would tell you they were good before Tommy Shaw joined the group and better after. The name could still be on tour today, but without Tommy or Denis, it's just not STYX. I don't know what year it was Tommy went to the Damned Yankees.

Hi ! Who s back story in Old Montreal ? Marc ? Anyway, yes Old Montreal is great ! My first job ever was in Old Montreal. I was a car Jockey ! 😎In 1972 and i was also tripping there at night with friends in bars along Place Jacques-Cartier ! Back in those years there wasn t any restaurants with terasses like today ! very touristic indeed ! Styx is always one of my fav band while trucking in the Rockies in Alberta and BC. all night from Edmonton AB. till i get to my destination in Prince Georges BC. I was a highway trucker for 35 years, so i had lots of time to listen to music ! I wish i would ve seen Styx in concert ! Saw many bands but not them ! So it s always interesting to watch a live show on video ! thanks !🤠

P.S. The conflicting lyrics you mentioned can also be said of The Guess Who’s song “American Woman”. They were Canadian and sung by their point of view. Lenny Kravitz redid it and the video was more positive than the actual lyrics. Still a good song though and you guys should check out some of their music. Some real good stuff.

I am sure and see most of the comments are covering the real info of Styx.
    Styx not the Styx
Dennis de Young was kicked out
Dennis is the founding member with the bass player Chuck and his brother, drummer John Panozzo who passed away while this tour was happening.
Dennis has had a successful solo career. He finished a two albums the last couple of years that are Outstanding!
Styx is currently, very good but with Dennis they are insanely good. The harmonies of Dennis and Tommy are the best anywhere any time!

The drummer in this is not the original drummer of the band. He unfortunately died before this tour. But he is still their drummer. The original drummer is the brother of the bass player . He was diagnosed with hiv decades ago but is still fighting strong to this day. ❤️

Y’all really need to do Renegade and check out Tommy Shaw singing lead on a real rocker. He’s the guy playing the double neck guitar in this one. He’s a rock legend.
