Great video. It’s very helpful I just bought a TE-20 with a Z120 engine. I bought it as a non running tractor. It turns over if I jump straight to the starter but when I try the shifter for the starter it doesn’t feel like there’s anything there. So I’m betting the pin fell out! This video really helps thanks.

Hi Lance Very informative video, like looking over your shoulder. Our Fergie, a 1948 has been in the family for over 70 years, ( my wifes granddad, then father) for 20 years it's been earning it's keep by cutting an acre field, but now it's time to retire the old girl, to hopefully, a life on the show circuit, but sadly not by us. We have moved to a small property in a village, we no longer have the space to keep her, it will be a very emotional day when she's sold on, but only to someone who will look after her as we have done. There are a few odd jobs before she goes, one is the starter switch, it's got a brand new battery and the starters overhauled, so I'm off now to pull the switch as per your video...thanks again..
Hi Lance....after I replied to you l had a cup of tea, and then following your instruction removed the switch, it's a little awkward in situ as I have fuel lines and the electric above it, but out it came no problem. Next day stripped it, sure enough the contacts had burn marks, not surprising after 70 odd years, cleaned it all up, drop of oil, made a gasket, fitted new screws, cleaned up the 4 bolts and fitted new washers, fixed it in, connected battery......works perfectly...thanks again, I wouldn't have been so confident without watching your video ...next is to fix the hydraulic lever fulcrum which has broken off...
On my Tractor the switch is sliightly different as the top of housing is fixed on with 3 brass rivets not screws .I had to drill out the rivets to get inside .Cleaned all internals put back together and pop riveted it back on .Now works perfect again .
Fantastic videos Lance. I didn't realize that it could be that easy to get the standard starter switch repaired. I added a separate switch when mine went bung.

Thank's for this great video, 👍 i should take a look at the starter switch on my 1954 Ferguson TE-A 20 in the spring when the weather starts to get i little bit warmer here in Norway. And then i skould clean it up, even tho it works perfectly fine now also, because it dosn't hurt to check it and do a cleanup at the same time when it's so easy. 🙂

Good stuff again Lance...I have a New Holland TC48TD..starter switch problems this week...thank goodness for multimeter's...3 faulty items ...wire broken inside the insulation, switch contact points worn and a newish battery showing over twelve volts but no grunt...got it sorted now, new genuine switch too expensive so I got a rubber booted toggle and a rubber booted push button...sometimes chasing one issue can often be from multiple failures....cheers
G Day Mike, I was going to use the multimeter to show this one working but the two I own seem to have died sitting in the drawer. Replaced the batteries and still no go. Off to get a new one.
Hi Lance , had the same trouble...27 year old dick smith DMM died...got a Owon B41T from the manufacturer in Hong Kong, cost $50 US..by the time it was delivered it was $170 AUD worked good on DC but yesterday was checking power to my outlets( on full off grid solar awesome )DMM going out on overload intermittently..emailed manufacturer and got an instruction how to fix...un solder a service mount component..had to do it under magnification as was tiny...DMM all good now but next DMM will be a quality Keysight or Fluke...won't trust a cheapy ever again.
ha ha just switched across to youtube and AVE is doing a review on an Qwon B35....lower priced version of the one I was telling you about....Coincidence or great minds think alike, lol.
Yeah g'day Lance--all this stuff is so helpful--keeping this old machinery running right is 100% worthwhile..I have an mf-65 front end loader for about 10 years looking after 10 acres and using it to do up gravel roads--making shed pads --carting and stacking trees..I would have saved 40-50 thousand dollars on contractors and I payed $5500 for it..I have had a look at the backend and the crownwheel and pinion do not have a mark any where...Probably done 15-20 thousand hrs and still going strong...This old stuff was so under stressed you cannot wear it out..regards E

@@BundyBearsShed any words of caution with the TO30? got the Tisco replacement. Looks like a slightly different design (more of a sealed switch module) from the TE machines where you can really get inside.
Dont forget to put inox screws or bolts on places that you know will rust heavily in the future,and maybe change for hexhead instead of round,I do that cause they are not so much more expensive,and saves you time and sw.Often an inox nut on ord.iron is enough to help.Thanks for vids. from DK.
Thanks Lance! I replaced mine as the Bakelite was crumbling away. The previous owner had bypassed it tho and fitted a key start. Question - If I wanted to reintroduce this important safety feature do I just splice the two terminals into one of the heavy wires going to the starter? And is the starter solenoid before this switch in the circuit or after....? or not needed now at all? I guess that's more than one question...😝

Not much apart from that there is a parts book on my web site here. queenslandtractorspares.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/TEF-parts-manual.pdf On the diesel it uses a switch on the starter itself and you must hold the brass button on the r/h side of the gearbox in to start it.
Just bought a tvo Ferguson. Tractor starts if you cross the solenoid but gear stick doesn't seem to want to move up to engage the solenoid. Maybe I am not pushing it up hard enough. Going to remove the solenoid tomorrow with wires attached and push the button underneath before taking it out and dismantling. Maybe someone has moved the solenoid and it's not making the right contacted. Any thoughts on what might be wrong before I do all that.

I have a to30 I'm in us. I have a new starter, it was working properly, I turned it off then tried to start it and nothing. Nothing at all. Should you be able to cross those 2 Bolts on top of the starter switch ? It still does nothing. Is the starter bad already? Thanks, Bear man!
Hi, I'm helping a friend restore an old TED20 and we've taken a look at all the electrics - everything that came off the tractor appears to be 12V, apart from the starter which is 6V. (stamped with the following numbers: Lucas 25519F M418G V139 1 6V). Do you happen to know the part number for the 12V starter, and is it a straight swap?
The bolt holes are different between a 6v and a 12v starter. there are many out there running 12v through a 6v starter and they still seem to last a long time if not left winding for too long.
great video but my switch only has a two terminal switch not the circular one you show and both springs are rusted and broken can i buy one of your switches and where do i get it from
i did mate. I ve just done an engine rebuilt on a ted20. The stater switch was stuffed, I cleaned it up, but i think a complete tear down would have been the go

I went ahead and replaced my starter switch and it works fine except for the oil leak....its a fair amount coming out, I used some gasket goo but didn't stop leak, my question is ...is there supposed to be a gasket of some sort between switch and top of tractor? regards Craig Royden p.s. love your videos!!!
G Day Craig, There should be no oil in the compartment under the switch. You either have oil leaking fron the front of the gearbox or the rear of the engine. You might need to split it and have a look.
I know this was a year ago hopefully you've got it figured out by now but in case others are curious, I think the heavy gauge wire from the battery goes to one side of this, and the other side goes right into the starter with a heavy gauge wire, no intermediary solenoid or anything, the full load of the starter motor goes straight through this switch. hope that helps!
Anyone know how to time the FF40 (French version) the two pips line up for the cam and pump, but how does the crank line up? Is it the keyway to the bottom?
Have you every heard of a case where these contacts stuck and destroyed the starter? I believe that is what happened to mine. The starter kicked in fine, but did not disengage and the tractor started . There was a terrible noise sounded like the motor or transmission was coming apart, I shut it down and from that point on the starter was dead. :(
I recently got "Gifted" a TO30 in pieces. Found an engine for it. I am aware TE was Ferguson European and TO is Ferguson Detroit, but, just to verify, these starter components are same, correct?

Yes for sure, the tractor was already split in the video and I just used the opportunity to show how it worked. Start by undoing the 3 top screws and have a look inside.

Yes Matt. It need to be a heavy gauge. Think from memory the one I got was around 25 amp.

The big wire from the starter would need to go through this switch of sure, they are a good thing.

No not usually as it can be slid forward and back for adjustment and is well protested under the battery tray.

Pull the top off it and clean the copper washer and contacts, you will be able to see if it is moving then. There is usually not a lot wrong in there.

Just remove the gear stick and try to release it while rocking the tractor. Sometimes it can work.

Ive got a To20 - cant seem to engage into the start position but tractor cranks,,, no spark however. would that be the cause?

Im using a switch kit including starter Motor, distributor, generator, etc.
Yes the voltage will not matter to this switch

Hi lance my to20 1947 won’t lift much weight lifts about 250pounds I’m just wondering what it might be if you had to take a guess
Possibly a weak relief valve or just worn in the pump or worn piston rings. Also possibly the gasket between the lift cylinder and the main housing.
Is it true that there are now more TEA20's than were ever produced...???
I kept the original gear-stick start on my Fergie.
I wouldnt think so as there are a lot stripped for parts, they made over 500,000 of them.
Hey Bear! I went ahead and replaced my starter switch and it works fine except for the oil leak....its a fair amount coming out, I used some gasket goo but didn't stop leak, my question is ...is there supposed to be a gasket of some sort between switch and top of tractor? regards Craig Royden p.s. love your videos!!!
G Day Craig, There should be no oil in the compartment under the switch. You either have oil leaking fron the front of the gearbox or the rear of the engine. You might need to split it and have a look.

No Not as yet, Never thought to do one.
I know this was a year ago hopefully you've got it figured out by now but in case others are curious, I think the heavy gauge wire from the battery goes to one side of this, and the other side goes right into the starter with a heavy gauge wire, no intermediary solenoid or anything, the full load of the starter motor goes straight through this switch. hope that helps!
Anyone know how to time the FF40 (French version) the two pips line up for the cam and pump, but how does the crank line up? Is it the keyway to the bottom?

Is that just for 6 volt or will it work when you change to 12 volt
G Day Ronnie, The switch is the same for 6 volt and 12 Volt so it will work for sure.
Have you every heard of a case where these contacts stuck and destroyed the starter? I believe that is what happened to mine. The starter kicked in fine, but did not disengage and the tractor started . There was a terrible noise sounded like the motor or transmission was coming apart, I shut it down and from that point on the starter was dead. :(
It is certainly possible if the spring that holds the contacts apart was broken or weak, the slight arcing of the contacts may hold them closed.

I recently got "Gifted" a TO30 in pieces. Found an engine for it. I am aware TE was Ferguson European and TO is Ferguson Detroit, but, just to verify, these starter components are same, correct?
Yes I believe so.
Is the T30 Ferguson setup about the same way

If you bypass this switch you run the risk of starting the tractor in gear with possible unintended consequences.
There's no chance starting in gear, i put the switch in a place where it makes it not easy to accidentally start.

just had a quick look at my 1955 fergy and I have just ONE terminal. Its not used. No connections to it.

Seems like a awful complicated setup for just a simple starter switch, why was it designed like this? There must be a reason. Great video though , I learned something, thank you sir.
G Day Larry, It is very simple in design and over engineered but I don't thing starter solenoids were a popular feature back in the 1940s.
It's an early safety feature since you can't start the tractor when it's in gear.

Yes for sure, the tractor was already split in the video and I just used the opportunity to show how it worked. Start by undoing the 3 top screws and have a look inside.
