The plot is actually a lot better than you make it out to be but it seems you just wanted to make a bad faith review because "lol it's Sonic Chronicles, no one likes it"
As someone who also played the Advance series and Battle I also remember really enjoying the story lol i was like 7 when i played through this. I also vividly remember forcing myself to beat this game too. I cant remember if i ever had Omega on my team but i do remember seeing him on the Frost world. I actually never knew cream was playable. Do you get her from the side quest??
@DarkshadowXD63 after you find cheese and return them to Cream, she asks to join the party. You can actually say no and have her not join the party but if you've done the quest I don't see why you wouldn't
Sonic Chronicles is quite the game that is mostly remembered for its bad soundtrack, however I do like how Amy makes up an imaginary Boyfriend named Dexter to try and make Sonic jealous, I also liked the dialogue choices were given for what Sonic could say to others. Then we have Shade the Echidna, I miss her so much, she’s kinda like the Super Mario RPG Geno of Sonic, she’s cool and has somewhat of a fanbase.
I bought this game day 1 as well. While I LOVE RPGs, I was never good at them back then, so even this game had me fuming. The only vivid memory I have of this game, was of unlocking Cream, then somehow getting really lucky and getting a Chao that gave you insane MP recovery, slapped it on Cream cause even as a kid, I realized giving the medic near infinite resources to cast healing would trivialize the game, then well....trivializing the game.
I'd actually argue that the map traversal and party members having different abilities to do so was a great thing. It forces you to actually use different party members that you otherwise never would have used, which might lead you to seeing that party member has some decent combat capabilities you never would have know about otherwise. I will admit that it was a little clunky having to switch around party members, but as you said, the maps arent huge enough for it to be a massive problem. If you make it context sensitive or able to seitch party members on the fly youre gonna end up only using the same like 3 to 4 party members the whole game. This way you should have actually used most of the party by the time you have to do split parties so you're not being forced to use a character for the first time suddenly.
The Sad thing is that an RPG with Sonic characters is a brilliant idea, but this game utterly blotches in a way that's basically discouraged Sega from trying it again.
Rose tinted glasses are crazy because I remember enjoying this game a lot as a kid. I was really looking forward to the sequel, but ofc you know what happened there.
My headcanon to resolve the cliffhanger ending of Chronicles is that it's the middle game of a trilogy consisting of Sonic Mania, this game, and Sonic Forces. The Phantom Ruby is never referred to in this game because Eggman doesn't become aware of it or Infinite until Sonic and crew go to the Twilight Cage. The events of Chronicles are never mentioned due to this new threat and out of respect for Shade who didn't survive the ship crash. There are a few other retcons that need to be done to fully canon weld the Chronicles cliffhanger into the beginning of Forces but it makes a decent amount of sense otherwise
I hated how the narrative was basically for naught most of all. It remains this nebulous entity responsible for much of the backstory, and it never goes anywhere. It may well have been a fever dream for them just how coherent it all is.
@@ibilesfighter3.16Sonic 06 and Sonic Forces 😂 (No one wants to get mediocre games like Forces, even if its better than games like 06, on a technical level)
@@Hyp3rSonicI think we’ve been way too kind on Sonic Forces. It is such a chore to play through. The sheer antithesis of fun. Almost all of the Partner/modern Sonic levels, except for a single one, can be boiled down to „press the boost button to win“. The OC levels are just as barebones, but they take at least twice as long as the other one because the game constantly forces you into some of the easiest combat/puzzle sections ever put into a platformer. And Classic Sonic somehow manages to be worse than those three, combined, multiplied by a factor of 32. Whoever had a hand in designing anything relating to that abomination should 1. learn what the term „momentum“ means 2. actually play one of the classic Sonic games. Any one. Even the GameGear ones. Or that one awful Sonic 1 port that is basically constantly running in slow motion. Or even something like Sonic 4 or Sonic Blast. Anything. And… 3. never be allowed to work on a platformer ever again
Imagine a new Sonic RPG made by Atlus taking cues from Persona/Metaphor ReFantazio & Yakuza: Like a Dragon. And there’s a Super Hard gauntlet update that continues the story of Chronicles exactly where it left off. Complete with bosses that serve to remind people why Atlus has its own TvTropes subpage on hard bosses.
Finally, a more fair look at Chronicles. The music is actually better than ppl think and I hate how SomeCallMeJohnny gave many a bad impression of the OST but there's still bangers in it. I really wanted to like the game when I got it during my Sonic fanboy days but I did end up selling it back to LameStop for like a dime. I Stoll miss the Chao I raised in it cuz they did carry ngl. Also in this game, Rouge SUCCS (No pause)
To be honest if this game just had an awful story and gameplay structure it could at least be passable as a "commentary game" as the brainscratch crew put it. But no, what literally killed this game on day one, was the _sound design_ If it isn't empty without anything to fill the void, it's stock hana Barbara sound effects slightly off key to avoid a lawsuit and no i am NOT KIDDING
i remember really enjoying how they expanded on the existing lore. But it was such a slog to get through otherwise. And Super Sonic being just a QTE was so disappointing.
I actually really liked this game but am well aware that its flawed. Theres actually a lot of really good potential, it just wasnt able to realize it because EA was closing the studio so they had to rush to even get the game out the door. From what I heard Bioware pulled the music as well so thats why they had to use the really bad chiptunes for the soundtrack. For all the shit the game had happen to it, its amazing that the game is still as somehwat decent as it is
I remember playing this game a LOT when I was a kid. My DS' had a few broken buttons and this was one of the few games I could actually play on the system. ...Man, what a miserable DULL existence that was.
From what I understand this game is like... actually a beta. Like very much not what was intended, at least with the music and the mistakes. The soundtrack is midis for christ sake. They finished enough to make the proudct but the game likely had it's delovpement time cut short so they couldn't really refine it all. I don't really know if getting that da time would had helped and the game is rather stable for a beta but it's xlear there was more to clean up.
I would really enjoy more Sonic RPGs. Specifically it could be a great chance to expand the lore on Chaos Emeralds and individual character abilities. Using Chaos Emeralds kind of like Materia from Final Fantasy. As far as abilities; Namely Silver, Blaze, and Shadow. Theirs are a little shallow and unexplained. With a unique setting and character redesigns (such as a fantasy setting alternative, as an example) you could better explore the characters themselves. Personally I'd love to see Silver as the face of Sonic RPGs, it seems like his genre.
The sad thing is that the comics are a good foundation to make an RPG on. The IDW books even better. It just needs to be handled competently and with the same amount of care that Mario has for their RPGs. Incorporate elements of Sonics gameplay to emphasize speed and whatnot (my idea would be a fast paced ATB like system instead of turn based). Also Chaos Emeralds wouldn't really make sense as something like materia since there are only 7. (And Sega absolutely insist there are only 7) So instead maybe Wisps? Chaos Drives? Sonic 06 Gems?
@Ziggaton As someone who has read the comics I could not begin to disagree more. But as far as the materia thing, simply make them equip directly to a character and have several abilities they can teach. For each new Emerald you would unlock a whole variety of abilities. You could start with one element, or perhaps 3. Then every 2 new emerald you could unlock higher tiers of elemental spells, as an example. It was more of a comparison of mechanics, I wouldn't literally implement the exact materia system. Merely using them in a similar capacity would showcase their mystical nature. Making them feel like more than mcguffins.
@@fortello7219 Why do you disagree? It's the best example of Sonic characters realized as characters. I just dont think Emeralds have ever been used that way and it would cheapen their power to me for that to be the case. We already have elements in the lore like aforementioned Wisps and Gems or Super-Go-On energy tha can be wielded for character customization that fits better.
@Ziggaton I dislike the comics for the same reason I dislike all serialized comics. The medium itself it's rife with issues, and while fans may feel like they have a good understanding of a character from them they're just cherry picking their own head-canons. When there are hundreds of comics to pick from and 10 for your perception and 90 don't, that doesn't make them good as a whole. If you want to draw inspiration, that's fine, go ahead. But I would not wholesale use it as a baseline for literally anything. Also don't know why you keep bringing up the whisps. They have very defined abilities that wouldn't really work the way I described. And I don't really see how attuning to a chaos emerald (something we see characters do in the games) to use supernatural powers cheapens them? They literally do it several times, and characters will even retain abilities without them. (Depending on the game, it fluctuates). But yeah sure, use whatever. Sorry for trying to incorporate the most famous items in the franchise in a new way that would specifically service an rpg. They can be basically anything anyways, like summons or revives. They're flexible.
@@fortello7219 Comics arent an imperfect medium but they are so far the best version of the characters in longform narrative form which is analagous to video games. It's a good foundation to build off of. An RPG inherently is a lot more world building defined and narrative driven and thus it would be prudent to use the legwork already established. Also the Emeralds as stated are only 7 in number and generally arent wielded by individual characters except for only very significant plot reasons. If a character like Shadow has an emerald it usually spells having a significant role and power in whatever plot they're involved in which often entails the back and forth of obtaining them/stealing them between the protagonists and antagonists. My concession with using any other element of Sonic lore other than them is that they are usually very plot relevant macguffins that are only used with very significant plot purposes. To relegate them to basically a piece of RPG equipment or Materia/Magicite would cheapen that imo and I feel like many things can fulfill that role without it being the literal 7 legendary emeralds themselves. It's the difference between Mario's Badges vs the Star Spirits or whatever extra powerful macguffins. In that vein, I dont deny they can grant some sort of power when gathered over the game like the Star Spirits/Crystal Stars do, but I dont think it would serve them narratively to make them the interchangeable stat raising thing for the characters.
really didn't say anything that hasn't already been said. despite whatever anyone thinks, I'm not ashamed to say that Sonic Chronicles is my favorite game.
I actually have this game, a sonic rpg would’ve definitely worked. It’s just that due to the development problems and potential lawsuits, this game was dead on arrival. some of the music was a massive downgrade like the city music where tail’s workshop was, the music was a horribly compressed version of diamond dust from the genesis’s version of 3D blast also, the combat did try to utilize the stylus of the DS, but the issue is that the commands sometimes registered, and sometimes it did not. Also, those stupid bees had such a high evasion rate it’s not even funny. also, your dialogue choices didn’t have an effect on the story, which kind of defeats the purpose of them.
Sonic team did make phantasy star online and the sakura wars reboot game runs in the hedgehog engine 2 so it would be genuinely possible for them to make an RPG. Maybe have Altus or RGG help with development to help polish the game but not be the primary folks in charge…
Not at ALL what I expected to see in my sub box today, but a welcome surprise, nonetheless. I've been on a bit of a Sonic kick recently with Shadow Generations and Nyarly's Shadow the Hedgehog videos, so this is appreciated in adding some fuel to the fire
It seems jokes about smt content makers having some groupchat, where they collectively decide the topic they'll discuss in their next videos weren't jokes
I don’t disagree with most of your points but your attitude towards the game just made me sad man. I’d get it if this was a modern release but it’s such an old game that never got a sequel. Maybe I’m blinded by nostalgia some but it wasn’t as bad as you made it sound. Also I’m fairly sure you got the ending wrong. When Super Sonic defeats Imperator Ix (not Imperado, I have no idea where that pronunciation came from) he destroys himself to close the exit and trap everyone else inside the Twilight Cage. Eggman stayed behind to help them return through the wormhole, but when they get back thanks to the Master Emerald it’s clear that time hasn’t passed at the same rate outside of the Cage and Eggman has taken over the world in their absence. Some of the lore is admittedly hidden behind some obscure sidequests, but saying that the story “just stops” misrepresents the game to me.
It will never NOT catch me off guard when English people try to pronounce "Imperator". I don't see anything unusual about the word, since it's how "emperor" is spelt in my mother tongue (Polish), but when I hear others say it, I realise how weird it is to spell it like that in an English product. :/
18:52 - I am seriously trying not to laugh right now. But yeah, I don't like Sonic Chronicles. The worst part was that Bioware didn't even try. They didn't even bother when it came to the game and didn't put much effort. Hell, some of the music actually came from ripped MIDI files. They just wanted to get a paycheck and move onto something else. All this does is make me wonder wtf were they thinking.
True it did sound like a ripped midi but the DS used SEQ which is mostly midi and if it was a stream it would have to be super low quality for them to use the DS unused strm feature which basically a mp3 in a way
Something no one talks about is that if you pick the correct dialogue options you can skip some boss fights. I remember as a kid I used to replay the early sections a bunch and randomly one time when I was hitting random options in the shadow dialogue he made fun of me for being a coward then left completely skipping a boss fight. I think it was in the swamp area.
I Really hope that the sonic team can finally gives us a whole new sonic rpg game for Modern home consoles as that they are very interested in one along with sonic team ceo wanted to be made before he retired. However the most important is that they have to make a original story and also not mentions sonic chronicles to avoid any legal trouble against Ken penders just like when Nintendo made both Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi RPG series as Super Mario rag successors after Nintendo and Square which now called Square-Enix in the modern day cut ties for long time as square jump to the Playstation 1 along with many third party developers that was partner with Nintendo for NES and SNES originally for more full freedom.
I have to wonder if this is a result of rush development, lack of resources, general apathy, or something else. This game needed more oversight and management from someone who gives a crap.
Why Sega took so long to green light a Sonic RPG: Sonic Team doesnt want another team to make a better Sonic game than them. It's called the Yuji Naka Legacy. Proofs: Sonic X-Treme, Sonic Extreme (Sonic Riders prototype presented to Yuji Naka), Sonic Boom, Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins (contracted to other smaller game devs like Pagoda West and Head Cannon).
It goes without saying, this is one of the worst Sonic games ever made, down there with the likes of Free Riders, Secret Rings, Shadow 05 & Rise of Lyric.
eh, i think Chronicles is only contested by free riders, like sure if you feel that way its fine but every other game you mentioned has aspects that makes them pitiful instead of irredeemibly bad... Shadow 05 was the first game that is dedicated to a not sonic character Secret rings is just mid, and like many wii/DS games, i blame the stupid mandates/ambition on motion controls for that games demise Rise of Lyric was truly pitiful, was made for consoles but then like more than halfway the stuff was scrapped cuz of the "3 sonic games for nintendo" mandate and had to be reworked for wii U from scratch
@@aokyoutsuki7744I've watched a streamer do a full playthrough of secret rings, and that game is rotten to the core. The way it controls is truly vile.
@@carlschrappen9712That's why people dislike Secret Rings. The worst part is, once Sonic gets upgrades throughout the game, it's becomes fun & playable but the damage is already done.
Yes! Please do more Sonic content! This and your Black Knight review are really good. I would really like to here your thoughts on the Adventure duology especially!
Gawd I remember the time for when this came out and how much it suck upon playing. I was thinking "if mario can have multiple kinds of RPGs then why can't Sonic?" Nothing about this game is enjoyable, fun or even "Fair" when it came to the balance of say plenty of other RPGS, heck plenty of turn-based RPGs that had difficulty curves. It's so bad that you have to research and find that the stats are not 100% accurate as to what you may think they represent in typical RPG's. Attack has nothing to do with your physical damage but rather your hit accuracy and defense isn't even about tanking hits, defense is to improve your evasion.
How coincidental that I just played Dragon Age Origins (far better than Veilguard by a mile btw) and this video pops up in the front page. But yeah, Sonic Chronicles is a mess. It had interesting ideas, but terrible execution.
I was genuinely stoked for the game! Picked it up the day it came out and yeah... it isn't good. Hard to believe that they got it so wrong. A Sonic RPG could be really cool. I finished Sonic Chronicles... but I did not enjoy it.
@ I downloaded it on my modded 3ds a while ago to play again because I remembered loving it so much and replaying it a few times as a kid, definitely gotta dive in and see if I still enjoy it today lol
I guess it took so long for a Sonic RPG to be made because turn-based RPGs actively contradict the main appeal of the Sonic series, being able to go fast and mostly at your own pace.
i know one factor as to why this game came out the way it did was that large parts of the game became corrupted literally days before cartridge printing. it's most noticeable in the soundtrack being what it is (they were only able to salvage the main theme) and the use of stock sound effects. beyond this, i do not know how deep this impacted the game, but you can at least blame how bad the soundtrack is on it.
That's interesting. I had heard that most of the music got copyrighted by Bioware and they wouldn't let them use it for this game, hence why they used really bad chiptune versions of pre-existing Sonic tracks
@@IosLocarth first i've heard of it, but given the kind of generic sound of the main theme, i can see it. i still think it's funny that they had a couple days to try to redo the soundtrack and it came out as... well, like you said, bad chiptune versions of preexisting tracks. it does make me wonder what it would look like if they didn't have these development troubles, though.
@@ZapBlaze I am so curious about a timeline where this game got to have its actual intended dev cycle. There's enough here to know that the game would have been at least decent but almost all of the issues stem from them not having enough time to fully flesh out or polish things. Like, I need to look into it but as far as I've heard there's no major glitches? This is almost literally a game that was forced to ship a little bit past the halfway point of development
@@IosLocarth i highly recommend looking up speedruns of the game if you haven't. not because it's a masterpiece or anything ,but because the people running the games know a lot of things about the development and talk about it pretty frequently. it's fascinating in my opinion.

I'd rather play Free Riders than Chronicles and I think Free Riders is actually good cuz I actually had the proper setup and handle of the controls. BITE ME.
I think it takes more than a good setup and handle over controls. A player's physique can also be a factor. Some people actually experienced genuine physical discomfort playing that game with the Kinect. A chunk of people couldn't play this game until someone patched Kinect controls out of Free Riders, which invited a lot more people in.
When I was a kid I got this game at a Farmers Market lol I wish I never got it 😂😂. Jokes aside I played Elite Beat Agents so the fight mechanics where very similar but everything else was just baddddd. Like even as a kid I forced myself to beat it just because I was a die hard Sonic fan i got to the final boss fight with Super Sonic and i just couldn't that fight was such pain on top of dealing with everything else I just popped it out of my DS and chucked the game. Lol to this day I dont know where it is lol its somewhere in my old house. I hope the new people living there never find it 😂😂😂
Funny enough, I actually enjoyed playing this, but not for the reason people think: playing 3d Sonic games can be difficult due to weird issues made by combining the speed mechanics with hardware not built for it, and as a result I never truly enjoyed the series past the first three games. This game allowed me to enjoy the cast and characters, without worrying about my game breaking due to the character being faster than the stage. I actually forgot about that non-ending 😂

@DarkshadowXD63 after you find cheese and return them to Cream, she asks to join the party. You can actually say no and have her not join the party but if you've done the quest I don't see why you wouldn't
I would like to see Sega and the Sonic team try again at making a Sonic rpg don't just give up after your first attempt
I really do think the current IDW books would make an excellent foundation for it in terms of the writing and characters and tone.
Iizuka did mention he wanted to make a Sonic RPG before he retires, not sure if he’s aware Chronicles exists
My main takeaway is that Chao are the best part of any sonic game they’re in.
"I like these chao guys" -jimenez
Counterpoint: SA1(Specifically the Dreamcast version)
The Sad thing is that an RPG with Sonic characters is a brilliant idea, but this game utterly blotches in a way that's basically discouraged Sega from trying it again.
4:58 did big just shit bricks?
Rose tinted glasses are crazy because I remember enjoying this game a lot as a kid. I was really looking forward to the sequel, but ofc you know what happened there.
Glad to hear someone talk about the actual gameplay of this game instead of just making fun of the music and calling it a “review”
When I saw "Bioware" slapped on a game cover that used to mean something
I remember buying this game on release over the ds version of Final Fantasy IV
Worst mistake of my gaming life..... 2008 me was stupid
Man, I'd kill for a Sonic Rpg in the style of, well, Mario Rpg.
But the ambition 😢
Sonic fans when you tell them the ambition behind a game means fuck all when the game itself sucks donkey balls:
@@ibilesfighter3.16Sonic 06 and Sonic Forces 😂
(No one wants to get mediocre games like Forces, even if its better than games like 06, on a technical level)
Whoever had a hand in designing anything relating to that abomination should
1. learn what the term „momentum“ means
2. actually play one of the classic Sonic games. Any one. Even the GameGear ones. Or that one awful Sonic 1 port that is basically constantly running in slow motion. Or even something like Sonic 4 or Sonic Blast. Anything. And…
3. never be allowed to work on a platformer ever again
@@KeDe1606 Forces was always mid.
Hot Take: The DS held back Chronicles
all the cutscenes look like a flash fan game
💯
Thought the same thing myself
I like the story, if it got retold as a comic it'd probably be alot better out of necessity... And the battle music. That's it
Ah the only Sonic RPG that wasn't so great. Which never got a sequel even today.
In all honesty, I think Sonic '06 could've been a good RPG. Alas, this lass can only dream...
And write fanfiction about it. 😿
Ken Penders really saw this game and its overwhelmingly negative reception and thought “I deserve credit for this!”
To be honest if this game just had an awful story and gameplay structure it could at least be passable as a "commentary game" as the brainscratch crew put it.
But no, what literally killed this game on day one, was the _sound design_
If it isn't empty without anything to fill the void, it's stock hana Barbara sound effects slightly off key to avoid a lawsuit and no i am NOT KIDDING
i remember really enjoying how they expanded on the existing lore. But it was such a slog to get through otherwise. And Super Sonic being just a QTE was so disappointing.
They should do a new Sonic turn based RPG.
I’d like to hear your opinion on the Mario and Luigi rpgs. They do action commands better but I wonder if there are any problems with those games.
Man this video is really well edited. Props to the guy that did that, he sounds cool and sexy and awesome and-
I actually really liked this game but am well aware that its flawed. Theres actually a lot of really good potential, it just wasnt able to realize it because EA was closing the studio so they had to rush to even get the game out the door. From what I heard Bioware pulled the music as well so thats why they had to use the really bad chiptunes for the soundtrack. For all the shit the game had happen to it, its amazing that the game is still as somehwat decent as it is
I adore this game and it’s the reason I love rpg games now
I feel bad that you played this, Sonic really needs a good RPG
I remember playing this game a LOT when I was a kid. My DS' had a few broken buttons and this was one of the few games I could actually play on the system.
...Man, what a miserable DULL existence that was.
I actually liked this game… I don’t know why and I still do
From what I understand this game is like... actually a beta.
Funny, I remember enjoying this game when I was young but I’m scared to revisit it now lol
I like Shade and the Nocturnus Clan in this game. It sucks that Penders file his infamous lawsuit, meaning Shadde no longer exist.
really didn't say anything that hasn't already been said. despite whatever anyone thinks, I'm not ashamed to say that Sonic Chronicles is my favorite game.
I actually have this game, a sonic rpg would’ve definitely worked. It’s just that due to the development problems and potential lawsuits, this game was dead on arrival.
some of the music was a massive downgrade like the city music where tail’s workshop was, the music was a horribly compressed version of diamond dust from the genesis’s version of 3D blast
also, the combat did try to utilize the stylus of the DS, but the issue is that the commands sometimes registered, and sometimes it did not.
I wonder if you will test one day Tokyo Mirage Session ? It's one of this game that I don't know if I should play or not.
How's this for an unexpected comment: I like Sonic Chronicles more than The World Ends With You!
Sonic really deserves another chance at doing an rpg
It goes without saying, this is one of the worst Sonic games ever made, down there with the likes of Free Riders, Secret Rings, Shadow 05 & Rise of Lyric.
eh, i think Chronicles is only contested by free riders, like sure if you feel that way its fine
but every other game you mentioned has aspects that makes them pitiful instead of irredeemibly bad...
Shadow 05 was the first game that is dedicated to a not sonic character
Secret rings is just mid, and like many wii/DS games, i blame the stupid mandates/ambition on motion controls for that games demise
Rise of Lyric was truly pitiful, was made for consoles but then like more than halfway the stuff was scrapped cuz of the "3 sonic games for nintendo" mandate and had to be reworked for wii U from scratch
Replace shadow 05 with forces
It's actually good, y'all just have bad taste
Its execution was terrible, but I would be lying if I didn't say it was admittedly a guilty pleasure of mine.
They should remake or reboot sonic Chronicles game
Considering the recent entry in the Dragon Age series was a mess... I'd rather not trust BioWare for anything nowadays.
Great video cool to see you talk about this game it was very disappointing I would love a cool sonic rpg
I rlly loved this game as a kid so this definitely kicked me in the gut lmfao but the music was so good 😭
Right I thought this was a really good game.
@ I downloaded it on my modded 3ds a while ago to play again because I remembered loving it so much and replaying it a few times as a kid, definitely gotta dive in and see if I still enjoy it today lol

the fact that alot of your moves just fail if you miss any part of the 7 step qte is so dumb. ESPECIALLY HEALING OH MY OGD
I had this game when I was younger and loved it ngl
sonic final fantasy x series did it better

I used to want to play this so bad when I was younger. got around To emulating it and boy was I surprised lmao.

Worst RPG i've ever played.
It gave me an aversion to RPGs for almost a decade.
