We Singaporeans are not 'nationalistic'; we are 'patriotic'. What you witnessed is 'patriotism'. We will fight for our country, (as patriots) but we don't go round and beat down others as what 'nationalists' do.

Ohhhh. Thank you so much for the correction. It's my English mistake. Sorry!
I can't correct the uploaded video content but I will use patriotic to express Singaporean people from next time! thank you for your correction again :) !

@@tetsuyathejapanesefactsreporte Appreciate your understanding. But what you said in your vid about 'nationalism having a negative image in Japan' is not wrong too.
There are still many 'right-wing nationalists' in Japan who want Japan to be the 'leader' of Asia, overtaking other countries and even 'over-powering' them. To them, the 'Divine Wind' will blow again.

Yeah, unfortunately, there are small number of those people in fact.

I have lived in Japan for 24 years now and I’m still a proud Singaporean at heart but besides the 4seasons, food etc, I can’t say I’m proud about staying here in Japan as I would with Singapore. Change is very very slow in Japan to sometimes a very frustrating level; rule & regulations in most companies have not changed much in the past 20yrs. It’s sad to see this as there are many talented people here in Japan .
And one thing Japan and maybe the USA have to accept is nobody can always stay at the top forever. I hope the new generation of Japanese can learn that being the Giant in Asia is no longer possible, a more cohesive attitude should be projected to push for change instead.

Haha, are you a Singaporean person? If yes, I can feel how you feel about the situation of Japan. And as you say, there are so many great talents in Japan who are kind of being wasted. Actually, I have one video mentioning that point. When you have time, please leave your comment from your perspective by watching this video. I am discussing with my Brazilian friend working in Japan after graduating from Todai. Let me share my video as followings.

There are many halal chinese food available now in many food courts nowadays. If you been here long enough, you will find them. Chinese people eat malay food and malay ppl eat chinese food (Halal) and also indian having chinese food too. In fact, most of us do not care abt where the food comes from as long it taste good. The only concern for muslims is that it has to be Halal otherwise Singaporeans are pretty open to trying different foods from different cultures.

    Mr Tetsuya,
Unlike Japan whose historical roots goes all the way back in ancient time, Singapore is a very new Nation and nation building is very much an ongoing and a necessary process. Always a huge task in trying to gel different races with disparage background, culture, religion etc into one People who can be loyal and consider his home here. Not only during good times but bad time as well which would be the real test.
Thank you for another wonderful post.

Yes. I also heard the same story from Singaporean friend. When I tell my friend that Singapore was doing pretty good to control ethnicities, my friend told me that at this moment at least, but we don't know when the balance and harmony is destructed at any moment, Singapore is still struggling and always has to watch the situation. Also SIngapore is a new country who is still around 60 years old. So, especially old generation (this is just my guess without any evidence) might not be feeling they belong to Singapore regardless of their ethnicity. But the people who were born after independence would be able to behave and feel as pure Singaporean, so maybe after another half century has past, the citizen of the whole nation of Singapore would become more Singaporean.
And yes, exactly as you say, regardless of different ethnicity, as long as everyone is filled with safety and relatively high standard of living, people don't complain because for example doing demonstration just put them into prison but doing no aggressive action guarantees their stable life.

just to be clear Malay people may not be Muslims for Malay is a race while Muslim is a religion.

    • @tetsuyathejapanesefactsreporte
      @tetsuyathejapanesefactsreporte  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for your comment. Yeah, I can understand the definition of Muslim and Malay but in reality, in case of you, have you ever met Malay person who is not Muslim? In case of me, I think I have already met over 500 Malay people but all of them were Muslims(100%). On the other hand, in case of Chinese people, there are Muslims especially when Chinese people marry Malay Muslim people because generally, they need to convert to Islam. I'm actually pretty curious of Non-Muslim Malay person.
By the way, accurately speaking Muslim is not religion. Muslims are the people who follow Islam. Islam is religion though maybe you just made a mistake.

actually, when it comes to food, you can find different races eating each other's food. as long as its good and it meets the dietary requirements of the person (halal etc).
also, we are a small nation and need to constantly evolve to survive the tides of change of the macro environment

Singapore model is UK and USA. Very inventive and original compared to Japan, but where are they compared to Japan or Germany? Germany is similar to Japan with its stubborn discipline and adherence to proven best practises.

The Japanese are a key player in innovation of consumer products that we use daily. In fact, they have so much technology that the west isn't even ready for yet, especially countries that are "sue happy". Singapore's model can't be the UK or USA where private enterprise leads the way. In Singapore, the government leads the way... everybody else falls in place and follows orders.

Nationalism is not good. Just as racism is not good. In Singapore, nationalist spirits is important because many Singaporeans migrate to the West.

Nationalism could work both positive and negative. Also without nationalism, people can like or love their own country. But as you say, in Singapore, because there is that kind of reason, nationalism needs to be created. It is also to control the variety of ethnicities. I always feel Singapore is doing a great job to control the country.
