I can only imagine how greatly this trip impacted this young singer from East Orange, NJ… in so many ways. In all the countless interviews, documentaries, even her own memoirs, the personal journey is glossed over. I’m sure she must have come back to the States deeply affected. I’m sure it gave her new perspectives. And I would bet it may have also caused some pain, coming back to the USA - old neighborhoods, old friends - and feeling forever changed in subtle yet palpable ways, because how do you share what you’ve seen and experienced abroad? Dionne was afforded a taste of European high life that few of her peers back home were. Clothes, food, customs, all different. While in Europe, she might have felt herself standing out as the only black face in a sea of white faces; she might well have missed her “community” of friends, family and fans from back home. At the same time, there was possibly more freedom from overt racial prejudice in France; Europeans appreciated Black American musicians and entertainers far more than Americans at this time. And Dionne was in the sublime company of Marlene Dietrich and Sacha Distel, among other bright lights of continental show business, which gave her caché by association. It must have been overwhelming to process all of this new stimulation.
Nice such footage exists!
Dionne Warwick has always been very intriguing to me. Her voice, her bone structure, and she has a walk that's out of this world.
She really is a superstar isn't she
