This song is pure Warwick. When she was young and could hit the notes. Vandross though takes this song to a whole different dimension. Warwick and Vandross presented different styles on this song and both are beautiful. But this is a Dionne signature classic.
Burt was lucky to find Dionne Warwick to be his voice for these songs. Ever hear Burt Bacharach sing, really bad, isn't it funny that someone so brilliantly musical can't sing.
I was today years old when I found out that this was Dionne's original record. Coming from a Dionne interview. What a beautiful thing that both her and Luther have such different takes on this song but they both hit you right in the heart. Dionne herself even said she believes Luther's version to be the official version of this song. I love that he admired her so much.❤
There's no voice in the industry which sounds so fragile yet powerful as Ms. Dionne's. Her voice is like a thin snowflake crystal that easily breaks even with the softest wind blow.
I think this was one of the prettiest songs Bacharach and David ever wrote. At the time, they pretty much were writing music with Dionne Warwick's voice in mind and her rendition of this song was absolutely perfect. No one else's version came close to hers. I was lucky enough to see her, when she was at the top of her game, and her voice, in person with just a single microphone, sounded as good as it did on her records.
I agree, but Dusty's live performance with Burt faking on the piano (and adding some horrible, out of tune singing of his own) is pretty wonderful in it's own way. Wish she had done a studio recording. I'm glad to have both versions, though it's Dionne's song.
Common sense on wheels Whattt, really??!!! She looked pretty and unique to me! I always thought her looks were a plus (in addition to her amazing singing)!
It just proof that beauty is in the eye of the beholder or in this case the lookers I like unique faces but this one nope needs more T& A to overcome da face
Indeed. This generation or at least 80% doesn't even know how to, or even express true love. I watch on TH-cam when people post their first time hearing an older love song reactions and you can literally see their honest reaction of something so beautiful. So sad most don't have a clue, and real singer song writers are definitely becoming extinct.
LOL. No, the listening audience are thinking that the good artists are here NOW.......people like Beyonce and Cardi B. Ha-ha-ha! You and I know that is not so but you can't convince them of that.
Natural, authentic and emotive raw talent!!!!!. There is no one like dionne!!!. Out of all the Bacharach girls, she stands head and shoulders above the rest!.
This is my first time hearing her version. She absolutely rips your heart out with her passion! It's like she was really going through it when she sang this. I still like Luther's version a tiny bit better because of all he did with it, but, man! Dionne reached back and SANG this song!
this should have like a billion views. this is real music. where can we find people that make stuff with this type of emotion behind. I get chills up and down my spine listening to this woman literally sings her heart out. Everybody wants be poppy, poppy

Dionne version was a true jazz ballad. This is how jazz is sung powerful in the full not to much timbre. Luther showcased vocal talent in his tribute, he done almost everything a singer could do in a balled. Love em both #BlackExcellence
I didn't know that she sang the song before Luther Vandross sang it. It adds a lot more meaning to her sitting and watching him sing it live with such joy in her eyes.
Overall I'm down for Luther Vandross' version of this song but I just love Dionne Warwick's simplicity and clean interpretation of how she sings anything...it is just so refreshing. Many vocalist kill beautiful songs by doing way too much, and the songs lose their original essence.
Always a class act. When I was in elementary school, my mom took us on vacation to Hollywood Florida. We stayed at the Diplomat, where Dionne was performing in the Crystal Lounge. My mom took us all dressed up to her performance. After, my brother and I waited in the lobby to see her leave … she changed out of her sequined dresses to jeans, and we hopped in the elevator with her and got her autograph. I have loved her music practically my entire life.

I love this song. And Dionne's performance is absolutely flawless. Superbly soulful delivery. Great memories, and such a consummate professional, with terrific musicians playing the fabulously arranged tune.KTF
Well said. Your description of her performance was so colorful and a pleasure to read. I love Dionne's version of this song the best. What a voice she had.
I remember being in my aunties kitchen when this song came on the radio. She was washing dishes , stopped wiped her hands, went into her bedroom and closed the door. She was divorced about a year later.
My mom's favorite singer. Every time Dionne Warwick had a concert in Kingston Jamaica, I was there with my mom. This song I'll never forget. Dionne Warwick is a constant reminder of my mom, there is a striking resemblance.
"A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 ballad recorded by American singer Dionne Warwick, and written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1964 ...
Another great one by the same writer, who wrote "Anyone who had a heart" was also sung by Warwick. The song writer said something about "all the musicians could not really accept the song, something about the unusual timing--whereas he says he played it for Warwick, who instantly accepted it-understood the timing and hit it first time. I had a very similar situation. My mother died when I was 10 and a few of the the popular songs at that time ("Walk Like a Man" and "Blue On Blue") are seared into my soul. When you are broken hearted, music finds such a deep place in you, and no one is more broken hearted than a child who has lost her mother.
What I have always loved about Dionne is she had respect for the lyrics, the music, the correct approach. No one can make me cry over a song about furniture and infrastructure like Dionne does
And Neil Sedaka The Hungry Years both wonderfully written songs
Luther Vandross' rendition of this song should have you sobbing loudly. He killed it, buried it, and sent it to heaven.
@@justtubing767completely agree. Luther makes this version sound a little generic. 😂
This songs makes me cry almost every time I hear Dionne Warwick sing it. Vandross, not so much. (Frankly, I don't like his version much)
