I've weirdly heard horror stories and success stories from Chevy Cobalt owners. I flip cars too and have had about a dozen of them, always made a little money with them but just lost money for the first time on a 2010 Cobalt LT, timing chain issue, bought it with a lopey idle thinking it was something else. Coincidentally my grandmother has an '09 Cobalt with about 80k original miles that she bought new, never been in the shop for anything in 12 years, still on the original brake pads even.

This video is a good reminder of why you want to make sure you know exactly what you're doing before replacing things. The fuel pump was likely fine. If you smell gas and there is a leak, then that needs to be sealed first or the pump can't build proper pressure. See this code a lot in the Midwest with rust. Also with the timing chain, you use the marks on the gears and the marks on the cylinders head and not on the chain. Those are just there for retiming after replacement. Depending on engine design those links will only line up perfectly on the crack and can gears every 2-300 rotation of the engine. You definitely could have machined that head though. Especially on common engines like this you guy buy a thicker head gasket for the amount they machine. This is actually very frequently done to also help ensure that the timing chain doesn't get too much slack from over machining.

wow, I'm about to start this exact adventure, flipping, and doing it properly...I'd hate to have an experience like this as my first go at it lol. I'm taking notes, watching all the vids, and have a backer. hopefully things will be ok. I won't be flipping junk, I want to be a respectable person that has their name mentioned when others need a good deal on a used car, other than that, my conscious won't allow me to crap work, I've lost my ass on jobs plenty of times because I insisted on doing things the right way, I've also lost actual jobs because of that, some employers won't tolerate it when you let them know they're not doing the right thing morally. fortunately for me, I don't that much about being wealthy, I'd rather be happy, healthy, and someone people can trust, that 's worth more than any amount of green paper in the world.

I bought a 2009 cobalt lt in 2018, for 700 from my dealership. Gave me 2 years of reliable service. An awesome car for people who can roll up their sleeves and do a bit of work . It was like a mini luxury car. I cleaned and polished it, did all kinds of home maintenance. The fuel pump started to fail and I still sold it for 1500 to someone who was going to replace the fuel pump. Good car

Buddy, roughly how much would a mechanic charge for going through the entire mechanical repair process you describe (drop tank and replace pump, fix lines, inspect timing chain and adjust)? I've been watching a bunch of these kinds of videos, and it seems that unless you can do these repairs yourself, the cost is prohibitive in that there is no profit left. Suggestion: if you make more of these flip videos, maybe also keep a running cost list estimating the cost if a mechanic performed the work.

FINALLY you show us the REAL side of flipping...
You honestly did really well you could have been 1000s in the red but you cut your losses and just scrapped it.
OPPORTUNITY COST is the problem with a flip like this....
You need a vehicle you can flip QUICKLY so you can move on to the next project. U
The only real thing that matters is how many $$$ in profit you are averaging ever week not necessarily how large the margins are.

The ability to know to cut your losses comes from experience. You absolutely have to make a bunch of mistakes as your education into anything. Your decision seems right to me and it's refreshing to see the blatant honesty of: OOPS another lesson learned.

That's a great video for anyone thinking about flipping cars. It's not easy as some TH-cam videos portray but I think I would have run for the hills when I first saw this car in person especially when you said it's worse than you imagined. I used to be a licensed car wholesaler way back when.

I’m glad you showed the downsides. A lot of newer flippers might keep on trying to fix the car causing them to lose faith and become frustrated. Better to get rid of the headache before it becomes a migraine and a money drain.

My first attempt at flipping a car was with this exact make, model and year, only with a manual transmission. I bought it for $500, the brakes were completely shot, it had 235k miles on it (mostly freeway miles) but ran good and had a straight body. I did the oil, spark plugs, air filter, a full detail, replaced the brake pads, rotors, lines, master cylinder, for $400. That car was such a pain to sell. I ended up selling it for $950. I learned, the manual transmission and high mileage really turned most people off. I made only $50 but learned a lot.

  • @viejonbigoton

Your probably the most realistic TH-cam channel out their for flipping cars and I watched alot of car channel videos and yours is my favorite drama free and realistic scenarios and I like that you put how much you pay for your car and how much you make in profit also how much time is spent on each flip because alot of TH-cam channels talk about spending 50 dollars on a part to fix a car but they spend 40 hours fixing the car like a normal person has 40 hours a week to fix cars.
