INFO: Now that it's a little over 2 years ago since David Bowie died, i thought it would be a great idea to look back at some of the amazing things he did as an artist. Most people remember him mostly for his contribution to music, but he was also an incredible stage performer and actor. Because he combined these talents, he was able to create a shocking image that echoed far into the future! Let's see if we can dive deeper into David Bowie's Characters.

David Bowie himself was a stage character. His wife said that the man at home was very different from the one the world got to see. He never legally changed his name to Bowie and she preferred to say she married David Jones.
Of course, he is a true artist. Any actual artist will have that, it's ways of getting your creativity out and the personality will be based on specific characters created. Same would be with a painter, writer, etc.

I interpret ziggy's story on a different way. He was the Starman sent to warn/save us from exctinction. But got lost on the his life of rock and roll and eventually killed himself. I mean, the album ends with rock'n roll suicide.

And you can trace some parallels with Ziggy Stardust, which always made me curious as to why he chose to star in it.

Bowie's discography is one amazing biography. Line up his albums and listen to them in order and it's a single story. I can't think of any one who pulled off such an epic catalogue.
Me neither. This reminds me of an interview i saw of Iggy Pop. He mentioned that Bowie was the
hardest working man he'd ever been in contact with. The amount of albums he put out is a testament to that.
And luckily in Bowie's case he had the talent and luck to create top-shelf quality music too! Epic epic epic...
The one catalog I can think of alongside bowies that shows such personal progression is kendrick lamars
being a young David Bowie fan (13) and not being able to grow up with him in my life this video helped me understand him and his music a lot more so thank you for this video

Same but I am 17. I listened to Let's Dance and Under Pressure since I was 11 years old, but never really got into his music until this year -sadly, it would had been better if I listened to more of his discography before he died. He was such an amazing artist.
Trash Queen if you like Bowie you will probably like Lady Gaga, girl is as talented and complex as him, she has a different “gaga” character for every album. If you’re into glam rock you should start with Born This Way and The Fame Monster.
Ofc I too wish I could have experienced the Bowie phenomenon alive, but at least I get to reflect his work through Gaga’s artistry.

I was 16 in 1972. I thought at that time he’d always be Ziggy Stardust. I was surprised he went to different characters. I saw The Diamond Dogs Tour in LA. He played at The Universal Amphitheater. Somehow my buddy and I had seats in the 8th Row of stage left. We sat by Elton John , Diana Ross , and many other celebrities. It was a fun night as young guys. I’m so glad to have seen him perform. Mick Ronson really added to it all also. His guitar work just added something otherworldly and seem to be as unique at that time as Bowie himself.

Correction. Space Oddity was released and did not do well. It was only due to the space race that it was brought to light and hit the shelves hard.

Some of us feel like we just don't belong in society as it is now. Our experiences have tended to isolate us so that we do not connect easily to other people. Especially if we've found that reaching out to others has been less than useful for us in the past. I think people need to understand that issues people have with mental health actually have little to do with health per se. Usually in my experience depression and other problems are a normal response to extraordinary circumstances. There is no chemical imbalance in the brain, people have simply been treated badly with no way of seeking justice. It's enough to drive anyone over the edge. I think those of us who don't sink into depression under such circumstances are simply more stubborn. =D I know I am these days.

+Nóra Bánfi Where the hell did you even get that anyone tried to say that feeling isolated and different makes one special? Also being just different or individual and feeling isolated or even shunned from the majority of people are not the same. If you fall in the latter category you will have a hard time feeling "special", because your individuality will not be perceived as a good thing by anyone. That's why those who fall way outside the norm have to work a dozen times harder than everyone else to get somewhere or find a way to turn what puts them at odds with everyone else their strength. Which is also what people like Bowie did/do. And this is likely what the video was talking about.
What you are talking about are probably special snowflakes - well, they certainly aren't special, nor all too different as they more than often come from good, intact houses and are middle class, etc. In the end they are just regular people trying hard to stand out (see any tumblr special snowflake ever). That's in no way comparable to people who are actually socially secluded.

Interesting comment - sometimes I feel that way, too, just because I have different tastes than most girls my age and am interested in a lot of things other teens may not necessarily know about or have any interest in. Discovering Bowie for myself was one of the first times I embraced my unusual tastes and willingly admitted to myself, "Yes, I AM quirky - and I like that about myself, and I don't care what anyone else thinks!"
Though I'm not his biggest fan, I'm grateful that he inspired many of my favorite artists.
That's good. There are some artists that i don't quite get either but are massively influential nonetheless.

Bowie is my new obsession, I liked him before but now I feel more connected to his works, even though he's not around anymore.
I first discovered Bowie when I was a kid. He was my "saviour" from crap like the Osmonds, David Cassidy, Leo Sayer, and my home town's Bay City Rollers. I loved his music and his outrageousness for decades to come.
It is amazing how he constantly reinvented himself and every persona was yet another part of his multifaceted talent. Even the disturbing, Fascistic Thin White Duke had 'something'; perhaps a darker part of David's character. And who but Bowie could have played The Visitor, or Jared?
The day I turned on the radio and heard that David Bowie had died, I cried openly. It felt like I had lost an old friend, and I was truly heartbroken.
It's so nice to hear that hehad true fans like you. It seems like his music has done so much
for so many people. Maybe not practically or physically, but emotionally a lot of people feel
like music would be a much more dull experience without him. I truly think so too.
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy is by far my favorite album by him. There's just something timeless

Space Oddity was not a huge success at first it was very moderately successful. It ended up becoming much more successful after the release of arguably his Magnus opus, The rise and fall of ziggy stardust.

In the UK it reached the top 5 in 1969. Bowie was in danger of becoming a one hit wonder. Ziggy changed that.

Maybe a reference to the Manson Family murders claimed to be inspired by the Beatles. The man being a way of differentiating the general idea from the actual events to avoid complications but also referencing Bernard Crowe or Garry Hinman.

As a person with BPD and being looked at for DID, I completely relate with this. I have many characters that I've made and portrayed or sometimes they just show up out if nowhere and they live in my mind, they're like other real people and sometimes they take control over me. But I also mask, I mask other people and characters that are already invented.

As an attention-seeker with a need to comment about my self-diagnosed BPD on a video that’s supposed to be about David Bowie, I completely relate to this comment (I’m different)
He wasn't polarising, he was here to unite. To show people that you can be a total individual (ahead of your time) and still do ok and feel ok within yourself. He valued creativity and originality; the opposite to mass produced blandness that is devoid of character.
The greatest, most unique artist who approached pop/rock music, & fame, like no other artist amongst his peers, as well as his place in modern history...

I think you should make your next episode on the smiths or morrissey. They changed music history whilst only 5 years together with a unique guitar style and morrissey's clever lyrics. They even inspired great bands like Radiohead and Oasis.

Space oddity…man that song got its hooks in first. After that as a teen I started buying records, the Man who Sold the World, and I was hooked on Bowie. I couldn’t walk for a year, and while healing I got ChangesBowie. That record and my friend Ed kept me alive as I recovered. I’m sad I’ll never get to tell him in person, but thanks David. You were very special to me.

I think it's worth noting that Peter Gabriel with Genesis in the early 70s (at pretty much the same time as Bowie or perhaps earlier) would perform as characters throughout their shows, singing and telling stories through these different characters with specific costumes, mannerisms and a lot of the time different voices to go along with these characters

True . Peter Gabriel got the idea when he and Tony Banks ( Genesis keyboard player ) saw Bowie perform with his backing band , The Hype , at The Roundhouse in London in 1970 ; the same venue Genesis were performing at too .
To sum it all up, Bowie said it best...
He said, that he’s not a “Singer”, he’s a “Performer”.

I was 12 when he passed away unfortunately, I had gotten to love his music when I was about 10 and to hear that hero passed away was terrible for me. I'm just glad his music lives on and his interviews live on.
What Bowie did with Ziggy reminds me of Poppy now. How she acts in character in interviews and how she's basically killed the character off in her most recent record.

Joined the Golden Dawn ? He was fascinated by them, Crowley and Western Mysticism. A few if his lyric reference this but I think you greatly exaggerate. Where is the evidence of his membership of any Mystical Order?
Most members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn already died of old age before David Bowie was born. Although many imitators claimed to be associated with the original, none of them really was. Although most if not all occult orders claim to represent genuine heritage, none of them does and blatantly lying about it is part of their game.

Actually, Marc and Bowie were very good friends. In the late 60's they would go to somebody's house (cant remember who) and the 3 of them would jam together. They very much influenced each other heavily

as a prolific Bowie fan, Marc Bolan definitely. Never heard any one mention an Alice Cooper influence though. I could definitely see how he would've been though.
I agree with the characters of course but he also did it to keep up with the time which is why his music change throughout his career which was absolutely incredible and what made him smart when it came to music and popular throughout his career

Looking back, I guess that was also just a part of an act, and not actually the real deal - in order to stay in character. After all, he was the incredibly thorough Actor, as well as Ingenious Musician.
And, on an unrelated note, seeing his relations with his Friends, his Wife Iman, his Children and numerous other people he met during his Life - He, apart from being the great Artist, was also a great Person..... David Bowie surely is missed.....

We lost someone who tried to conquer issues over his upbringing ...then becoming a pure genius at all he attempted ...So sadly missed Bowie will always Rock... as well as so loved and admired. We have to celebrate the person's life and films and say Thank god I was born when Bowie was around...

In Low, there is very little ambiguous lyrics of themes. It's just that and the beautiful music that surrounds him on that album. That's what makes it so special, it's unassuming and straight forward.

I always prefered the first half of the album. But a friend of mine said i should listen more to the second part too. I guess it takes a bit more time to become familiar with the more avant garde, electronic stuff he did. What's your take on that?
You don't really have to focus on the lyrics, I mean each song that has them has an interesting backstory that's inspired by something real, but it's not really that important in comparison to Ziggy or Station. As for not preferring the second half, I can see why because it takes time to enjoy. Although Warszawa and Subterraneans always stood out to me as being really good .
I didn't even like Lowe the first time I heard it, but it's a masterpiece through and through.
