The guy was a class act, even though he's probably heard every question imaginable he still treats it like it's the first time he's heard it. Honest, humble, just a wonderful human being. My life was enriched by his presence on the planet.

Fortunately I was the right age when David Bowie first exploded onto the scene in England, and my sister and I went to one of the Ziggy Stardust concerts. It was so exciting, but SO LOUD. There were banks of speakers either side of the stage. Lovely memories

I love the bit about his bad stretch during the 80s. An artist should never compromise. And he realized that in the early 90s and contiued to follow his impeccable instincts. He even turned his death into a piece of art. What an incredible human being.
Every single time I listen to Bowie speak I am more and more convinced that the world has lost, not only a transcendent artist, but also a social prophet whose guidance, and wisdom, we miss on a daily basis! I always blown away by how David answers interview questions as if they are the first time he was asked.
His intelligence and interestingness and interest shines much stronger than his ego-- which is I think what makes him so appealing. I am as interested in hearing him speak as his music.

His sense of humour and that bit of self deprecation (talking about his haircuts, his mid-Eighties pandering, etc.) is incredibly revealing. He's so self aware here. So in touch with with his history, his influence, his mistakes. THIS is the David Bowie I want to always remember. As much as I love Major Tom, the Man Who Sold the World, Ziggy, Alladin Sane, the Thin White Duke, the Man Who Fell to Earth, the Berlin Bowie, the "POP!" Bowie, the "I'm done-with-this-pretending Bowie." I have nothing but love. For the artist, for the fans ("I'm just a space cadet, he's the commander...") for those who really dig deep and listen to the words. David Bowie is a poet, a musical genius, a master of re-invention (Madonna studied him, more than she'd probably like to admit) and he is and will always be the most listened-to musician in my headphones. At let's not forget the musicians who made it all come to fruition - Rick Wakeman, Mick Ronson, the Spiders, Mike Garson, Aysnley Dunbar, David Sanborn, Luther Vandross, Ava Cherry, Earl Slick, the ultimate rhythm section of George Murray and Dennis Davis. I saw him in the late 70's or early 80's. I expected the 8" stacks and orange hair. He came out with his hair blonde and a tux. He was dressed like Frank Sinatra. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

I was 10 years old back in '79 when Bowie's music came into my life.
He was like some kind of rare, divine chameleon who fused music, theatre, literature and fashion into his own unique art form, yet never repeated himself. It felt almost like he was a gift to the world whose talent produced so much fruit for us all to enjoy.
I always dreaded the time when he might not be around and still haven't got used to living in a world without him.

He was so wise. Looking back on his interviews, he was ahead of the game on so many topics and issues. The MTV interview where he, politely, takes them apart on their lack of diversity for black musicians is phenomenal.

I think this is my favourite Bowie interview. He's warm, engaging and articulate. He looks so happy and content here that it's beautiful to see.
Shattering to think in just a few years, he'd be gone. And with Blackstar - and Lazarus - a farewell letter to the world - Such overwhelming artistry and humanity. Love and respect.
Interesting how the interview concluded with the idea that he was no longer a trailblazer. Blackstar in my opinion is one of his finest works. Two years after his passing I can listen to this album and not imagine any other artist with the balls to create such an emotionally raw album while still allowing the music not to be overshadowed by his personal pain.

Wow,David seems so much more comfortable in his own skin as he got older. He was really geeky in his early interviews. This man was one of the greatest artistic minds of our age,and us mere plebians always have such a hard time reconciling the common mortal that embodies the genius. After falling in love with his art at 15,it knocked the wind out of me when he passed on. My alma mater Cleveland State University,to their great credit,at his passing,played nothing but his works for 72 hours straight on their radio station,WCSB. Miss you so terribly,David. You were the older brother I never had,who had the most wonderful stories to tell, with the most captivating voice. Such wondrous songs,Mr.Jones.
He aged so well. As a teen female I bought his scary monsters album. Still listen to it. Then MTV came out, blue jean became my favorite song. Wish he were still on earth. So much to say....

For me there has never been a music artist as talented as David Bowie. He could do anything act, sing, played on Broadway as the elephant Man and cryptically acclaimed. The man who fell to earth a master piece of a film. Ziggi stardust such a iconic album in music history . The guy had such grace and class. Then when it was time to leave this world he went out with such dignity and left us with a album of the quality as black Star. The word genius is used to often but not in Bowie's case. He sprinkled stardust where ever he went .

Used 2 get tickets by mail order, I wrote a check 4 the tickets & he endorsed the check with THANK YOU SO MUCH, DAVID BOWIE. 1st & only time I got a TY & an autograph from a Rock Star. R.I.P. I met him in 78 treseed like the STATION TO STATION cover..i was 17 he was a gentlemen .....told me i looked terribly smart
I've always felt that David Bowie looked less his age as he grew older, not that this is a bad thing. In his 70's interviews he comes across as the usung genius that has visions far beyond his (or our) comprehension. That of course made him compose some of his best work. I was born in 1963 and the first I remember of him was Jean Genie but I thought it was a Rolling Stones record (sorry). Then in the 80's he went "public" whith Modern Love and China Girls. I know lots of people didn't like that about him. I liked it! And he opened up more about his peronal life. Like when he was promoting Never let me Down in Holland he told the interviewer that he had just recently learned to swim. I was so lucky to be able to see him live in Rotterdam in 1987 at the Glass Spider Tour. After 1987 he kind of did what he wanted to do (to me that seems like an artist's heaven) and he seems to have opened up a lot more in that time in interviews etc.
I will always remember that fateful day when my brother called me and said he just heard that David Bowie had passed away. In 1977 I had seen people cry when Elvis Presley died, and I never thought that I would ever feel that way. But on David Bowie's passing I cried, and many months after that, which I never thought that I would. But I did. Because all the years I had been listening to and learning about music, he had always been there. Like a constant factor in my life. Him dying felt like it could not be true because he was immortal already. How could our role model, the one that told us that we could be US, the one that told us "be brave enough to be yourself" die? It just felt so cheap... "Time is waiting in the wings..." He that showed the world that there are so many pieces. facets that compose a human being, and that there are more sides to every story, more aspects to any person, than meets the eye...
David Robert Jones, David Bowie, Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke, The Starman, Thomas Jerome Newton, and many others that I don't know at the moment. Thank you David Bowie, for everything, have a great journey, hope to see you in heaven some day.

His humility and giving disposition are rare traits in general, and especially rare in those of such ability.
I'm also born in 1963....live in the NW Bronx....often saw Bowie walking in the Village....mostly in record and books stores. Never spoke with him....just a respectful 'nod...as if to recognize....yet respect his anonymity, as a fellow New Yorker. He always wanted NEW things....records...books....newest copies of NME and other music and art periodicals (talked with sales people as I was often in line also waiting for checkout at same time he was). I did have ONE friend who was, and remains a HUGE BOWIE fan....we saw hm on the SERIOUS MOONLIGHT tour....had to travel with friends to Syracuse in upstate NY, since his NYC dates were sold out...several Madison Square Garden dates...but , like you, I did see his GLASS SPIDER tour....a bit of a let down, but we "got" the Toni Basil choreography....and loved his musicians, esp. Carlos Alomar on guitar. I was turned off by his move with the Sales Brothers....TIN MACHINE. When I did see Bowie in NYC's Village/Chelsea....it was most often in later PM hours....8-9-10pm...often when record stores and book stores on 8th Street....on 6th Avenue were closing. I did cry when he died....had seen a photo from the premiere of LAZARUS the month before he died, I believe, in the NY DAILY NEWS which I have rarely looked through in recent years. He looked well and then WHAM....dead. Similar with PRINCE, a few months later. I'm looking through as much interviews with BOWIE as I can handle...IGGY PPOP and his producer Tony give a nice perspective. Hope his daughter is doing OK.

Bowie, Dylan and the Beatles were the soundtrack to my teenage years and I see them as the three best artists of the century. I played Bowie songs nonstop at one stage, drove my family crazy, but I was so amazed by his very sophisticated songs that I had to hear them again and again. Bless you Bowie for giving us such beautiful songs.
In the last 20 years of his life you can tell he is happy in his private life. He is a relaxed, contented man who has done it all and has nothing to prove. He has a happy home to go home to - wonderful man. David was the embodiment of the aesthetic impulse, a true artist for all of us. I love the way he talks of John Lennon, the way he took the avant garde and made art for the masses, without being elitist. When I was a little kid, "Strawberry Fields Forever" came out. I did not understand the music or video, but I knew the world had changed.
Bowie was always brilliant and articulate in an interview.
It's clear Bowie is the most content and centred he's ever been - he's found happiness with Iman. He's so chilled, he's tolerating this clumsy interviewer's awful, stilted questions with incredible grace!
I'm so glad he met Iman, this great man deserved that wonderful lady and the family life they created together. It underpinned the last decades of his life, and gave him the work life balance that was always missing. Love is the only drug worth getting hooked on!

David Bowie was definitely a very intelligent, articulate, multi-talented individual. He excelled in so many other areas besides singing. I was really amazed that he kept on working almost to the day he died. He was one of a kind and I doubt that we will see his like again.

Lloyd Gittens Leave him alone. Of course many people have died. That doesn’t make it any less painful if you’re a fan. I still grieve over the loss of John Lennon, George Harrison, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimi Hendrix, and Michael Jackson, to name a few.

In hindsight, David Bowie was such an enigma. constantly reinventing himself, his public persona. I've been a fan off and on for decades, but his last trick, coming out with a most curious and wonderful record, then adding an EP to it, then Releasing Blackstar as we hear he died of cancer that the public did not know he had! Amazing!
My first money making band was in highschool ('65) but I came in to my own as a weekend warrior from '71 for about 28 years. Bowie fascinated me because I got paid for recognizable cover music while Bowie was always coming out with impressive yet non-mainstream music. It would have cleared the dance floor to have played his stuff (If I'd been able to get my band at the time to play it) but that doesn't mean that he didn't impress the living sh*t out of me! I'll never forget watching him on Midnight Special or Rock Concert with Mick Ronson. Bowie's boldness with constantly unexpected metamorphosis of both image and music constantly amazed me.
Imo, his place in "Rock History" as an innovator is unique.
Simply a genius that we are fortunate to have experienced in our lifetime.......hopefully future generations will realise how much this man contributed to his craft. A true Genius!
Growing up in the 70's with a sister that absolutely idolised Bowie and Motown was bliss for me. A wonderful period in my life so full of music and love.

I watched his early concerts on TV in the early 70’s he was so amazing changed costumes many times a show. He is the most influential artist that influenced me to become a musician not of his caliber but no t many are. I miss him dearly such a humble man.
David was flaming at this time in his life. Still relatively young , prolific, and arty still in his long prime. I did indeed love this era of David. He could pull in anyone into his charming web....lot of great music to follow this interview...P.S. this is a nifty interview.

When he said Lennon was a huge influence on his music, I thought to myself how amazing it would be to one day talk to and write with David Bowie. Can't fucking believe how many of the people I absolutely adore are dead or dying. I'll never meet almost any of my current idols.

What a magnificent interview! Bowie is so at ease, his eloquence and intelligence are so effortless, he imparts incredible insights into music in general and his own musical growth. Maybe I can be a hero just for one day, but Bowie will always be a hero to me.
I remember seeing him on Midnight Special in 1977 as he performed Heroes. As a kid I thought that was the weirdest thing I've ever seen. A couple of days later I bought the album. Highly talented man. RIP

When he's like "Are we ever going to get to the present?" I felt that.
Seriously! He gave the interviewer a couple of hints at “move on.”
It's no wonder he got tired of interviews. I'd get tired of repeating myself over and over, too! I still listen to all the same interviews though. I only wish there were more.
Saw Bowie twice 70s, 80s and enjoyed most his work. Musical, theatrical genius but a flawed man at times- like most heroes.
However, I regret not catching his last tour of Australia. And at the time I had a feeling there would no big tours. Shortly after this interview and tour, he had heart attack and major surgery.
Led a quieter life after that. He even choreorgraphed his final musical release, successfully before his anticipated death.
I assume that when you say "when he's like..." you're really trying to say "when he said...". Why not say that? I just don't see how the indiscriminate substitution of one of these inarticulate placeholders such as "I'm like..." or "...and we're like, you know..." clarifies meaning in any way. I'm all for organic evolution of language, but something has to be gained in the process. This idiotic affectation is really arises from laziness, and doesn't contribute anything to transferring meaning or information. Obviously, I'm really, like, y'know, bummed by this shit, so apologies for being like, y'know, down on y'all.

Such a thoughtful man at that age. That same set of questions at 28 would have left such a different impression on us. Amazing how we can continue to grow as long as we go after meaningful relationships that we allow to mold us and the passions that light our fire! RIP DB. The world is a little darker without you.

I mean apart from his genius as an artist, expecially concerning music, but also about every other topic that he talks about, always makes me think again: "Wow, he was the best!" So glad he survived the cocain-years. Sometimes I find myself spending more time to listen to interviews than to his music. How interesting it must have been in his company, especially during these later years...

I don't understand. What does your being English have to do with anything? Pride in something we had nothing to do with (DNA/heritage) doesn't make any sense to me.

Bill Tetley His music saved my life as well. I was mentally ill and in the summer of 2017,I was going through tons of shit. I mean,things were really going wrong in my life. The first song that I liked by Bowie was “Life on Mars” and “Starman”. I listened to Starman and Fame and that’s when I first got my love of him and his music. I watched his interviews and fell in love with his whole Ziggy Stardust persona. Ziggy was the shit!!! To this day,I still feel a sense of sadness. I miss him a lot. It feels like he was my father or husband. I was also in love with David Jones. He was a loving,great father and a wonderful husband. It’s like I knew him before I heard his music. RIP David Bowie. I hope you’re enjoying the view. ❤️❤️
