Bowie was just one of those rare people who could quite literally talk about the most mundane, pointless things imaginable and yet be so captivating, so bloody interesting and fascinating, not just because of THAT voice, but his way with words, his diligence and ideas, just make him one of those rare icons. What I love is how freely and effortlessly he talks about his past, these extraordinary events and moments that the most avid fan would pay dearly to hear about, like they were nothing. The thing about being pinned down is brilliant. One can see Bowie's usual habit of becoming too self-aware of what he's saying and then disarming it with humor and self-deprecation. Excellent interview, grateful to see it in full.
His hair styled him. It's called genetics. Most men, not all, mind you, but most- have suffered massive damage to their follicles after puberty or certainly by their early 20's so that "styling" one's hair is no longer an option
+mano Fiske That's not true in Bowie's case. Bowie had great hair and a longtime hairdresser. That's how he met his wife Iman. She had the same hairdresser. He (the hairdresser) thought they would make the perfect couple, and invited them both to his birthday dinner in 1990. The rest, as they say, is history. By the way, Bowie is famous for his ever changing hair styles and hair color, thanks to his stylist. He even styled the couples' hair for Bowie and Iman's 1992 wedding in Italy.
He could do it in a lot of them. But I don't like how they had to try to tear him apart in some of the other ones. Thank God he didn't give in. He avoided giving answers, tore up interview papers and told people that whatever it was they were wanting to know was his own business. That's a role model. Lol. And thank God he became a better person later on instead of a worse one.

Life is fluid. and David Bowie understood this ..in his work ..his full body of work, in everything he did. such an inspiration ,true and real..so hard to find these days...rest in peace David Robert Jones..you will be sorely missed.
He was one of those people you thought would always be there. I loved Bowie's earlier stuff, absolutely hated Diamond Dogs, but you knew that the next album would be completely different again and that you could plug back in. With Bowie, there was something for everybody and his massive influence on music over half a century can never be forgotten.
This was a great video. In most interviews, Bowie was so irritated with being asked the same dumb questions over and over about bisexuality and what he was trying to do with Ziggy Stardust that he just shut those topics down completely. Here he really had a go at explaining those things in his own words, without the interviewer interrupting him much, and it was just fascinating. "Aesthetically promiscuous," I love it! What a mind this man had...
"Nothing in this world is a real reality, it's not something you can hold on to... it's a chance to rethink" ... this guy was on a whole new level. Whatever drove Bowie is something to be forever inspired by.
Wow. This is best Bowie interview I’ve ever seen. He’s soooo comfortable and open and seems in such a good place! His honesty and ability to self-reflect is what makes him a great songwriter and artist. That ability to intensely observe and philosophise, allows him to see patterns in things mere mortals cannot. He never lost that childlike desire to explore. Love you, David. My star man ⭐️
What a loose interview, his personality really shines bright in this clip. He was so positive and a real sweet person.Thank you so much for this interview, I started listening to him in '93 so interviews of DB from the 90's are my favorite.
That's the first time I've heard the word loose described tastefully! In a long time at least! I didn't start listening to him til almost 3 years ago but I watch all the interviews. I have my favorites. And in almost all of them, you laugh, lol.
If Bowie is on a screen, my eyes just will not move anywhere else, he is charming, engaging, mesmerising, funny and exceptionally good looking, and that's before he starts playing his wonderful music Forty eight years of adoration, still going strong 🤓🇬🇧
It is absurd that a lot of criticism leveled against Bowie back in the day was that he was supposedly "inauthentic/ not a real rock and roller", when in fact he was one of the most genuine, sharing and honest artists.
+kate davenporty Gorgeous speaking voice, beautiful laugh too; totally agree! It always stands out to me how well-read he was, therefore so articulate. Love the way he talks using such precise words to describe things. Amazing quick wit and dynamite sense of humor, too...and such good stories...

Did you see the Gary Oldman tribute? He said that David said the bad news was the cancer; the good news was that he had his cheekbones back, lol. Even then, a sense of humor...
+Laurie Thompson INDEED Laurie, what a blast it would have been to know him.Yes,i did see that tribute by Gary Oldman (another British bloke i admire) and had to agree about his amazing sense of humour. There will never be another like him :)

Endlessly gracious and funny and articulate and so interesting to listen to. I do hope that all his interviews are collected for the benefit of future generations.
David Bowie is such a complex person, so much more than what people thought he was. I always adored and respected the way he speaks of himself as an amalgamation of every person, song, religion and country he has ever encountered. He has never been one person, he has always been seven personalities at the same time, constantly moving from one focus to another
His eyes, his voice, watching his thoughts come to fruition..this man was a magical creature....intelligence on another level. We sure are lucky he fell to Earth
Bowie has long been a (hero?) of mine since I was 13 years old. I initially found him to be both shocking, and curiously astonishing. He seem to have a true artist's heart and lens. Looking up Bowie on TH-cam is like visiting a old departed friend or hero. Here it is almost 2020, and I am enjoying his musics and interviews all over again.
@17:00, oh man. that is one of my favorite stories about brian eno telling bowie he had discovered the future in donna summer's "i feel love". that is hilarious but hell, that was a good fucking song.

Jeez, I can identify so much with everything he talks about. Those emotions and views are what made him the only relatable real person to me in the first place.
The world needs a David Bowie. Expanding thought, music and art. Seeing what is a "fad" and bursting it's bubble in ways nobody could conceptualize. Jack Nicholson is the king cool of acting, David Bowie the king cool of music. Rest in peace knowing the art you created will live on.
I am absolutely in love with every single thing about this man here....every single thing about Bowie seems to have been created with the sole intent and purpose of making you fall in love with him
I'm glad MTV news are sharing these interviews. Amazing how they don't look or feel dated at all, and many of these are well over 20 years old now (dang, we're getting old). I guess that's a testament to the man himself really, how in every era, in everything that he was, in everything that he did, David Bowie was (and still is) timeless.
This poor, sad interviewer. Trotting out the same, tired, old questions. To have access to Bowie's brilliance and not go down those blind alleys with him as he's opening those doors, opting to choose to tread down the same, worn high street instead, is such an incredible waste. Bowie: "I know so many painters who title their works after they've done them, which is a real giveaway." Me: "Why? What does that mean to you? That they don't know what they're doing as they do it but can only tell you after it's done? Same with you as you went through stages of your career?" Interviewer: "Um, yeah. So, your previous characters were very 'white,' and then you played R&B..." No wonder Bowie went into hiding. How unfathomably boring these discussions must have been for him.
I was devastated by the interviewer's follow up question to that. It was exciting to see his eyes and expressions as the thoughts zipped through his brain. I wanted to explore his thoughts to that end... Oh well..
You can also see from his reaction, his expression after that how alienated he felt, at least in this interview. It's a common occurrence for myself when talking to people, they just don't get what I'm talking about, very few do.
Deirdre inDC Absolute TRUE!! besides he (interrviwer) was interrupting him to make his dumb questions!!! If David Bowie was interviewed by John Lennon and viceversa.. Than would BE a fckng GOOD interview!! of 2 ppl that understand eachother... at least 2 musicians or 2 artist and I would say that name. the painting after finish is what Bowie did many times. you don't control the creative process, you let the creative process take control of you... that's how i understand what he said
I enjoyed this interview... The leading questions were good and Bowie was very forthcoming. HOWEVER the interviewer lacked talent in following up on points Bowie made, he didn't flesh out the stories or dig more into what David said, and he dudnt keep the conversation going. He had a prepared set of questions and thats all he could say. When david would finish talking, there would be an almost awkward silence, instead of the interviewer continuing Davids train of thought...
Better to just shut up and let the other person speak if you don’t think you can add anything of value. Besides I like the fact that the more the interview just let Bowie talk the more we got. If anything the interviewer was fantastic and not making it about them or their ego
Definitely one of the best interviews with David Bowie I have seen. Great questions and he was clearly in the mood to go down memory lane. He seems to be enjoying it just as much as the interviewer in an appearing cathartic kind of way. RIP David Bowie! True artist and gift!
I just adore Bowie. If people listened to him back in the day, this world would be such so much better. He spoke on everything that was taboo back in the day.
6:32 "Most artists feel a lot happier discussing the process of what they do rather than what the hell it means" Really interesting... it's true most artist feel a need to create, that is by definition not rational. And the whole goal of the creative process is to create something as close as possible to what you have in mind. The interesting question for the artist isn't 'why do I have this idea' but rather 'how do I create this idea'.
+DreamPurpleFloyd Not necessarily. Focusing on the outcome- how do I express this idea- is one way of creating a piece of art. But it is equally valid and arguably more interesting to focus on the process itself. In that way of working, the artist has no fixed idea of what the outcome will be, and uses aspects of the process- self imposed rules, accidents, chance, collaboration etc- to influence the direction of the work. They may finally shape that into something more intentional, which would be like the painter coming up with a title at the end of the painting, as Bowie mentions, but they didn't set out with a particular result in mind when they began. Bowie himself used various 'experimental' techniques, cut-up lyrics being one, and it seems he took a more process-based approach to his work than an outcome based approach.
Exactly. There's no "correct" way to make art. You can start with an idea, or start with a process, or something else entirely, but it's wrong to say that there is only one way to do art. Sure certain mediums may lean one way or the other, but as long as you make a good piece of art, the process isn't going to discount that.
You're so right. I had the good fortune to meet him in 1987 and nothing was too much trouble for him. He was friendly, amusing, polite, charming and the most wonderful smile. He was so down to earth and treated you as an equal. I wish I could have spent more time with him, he was a real gentleman, they are few and far between these days. I do wish he hadn't done the drugs and smoking, though.
It was just a song that he wrote about how he felt about fame. No wonder he wrote it. They treated him like shit and he respected them thoroughly nomatter what. Even if he didn't answer the questions, he respected them. Even Jomathan Ross...that perv. I think he had the hots for Dave and Dave wasn't gonna have it. I think that Ross was just trying to bully him, but eww...nevertheless, Bowie could pick better if he was gonna go down that road.
"I know a Beatle that I always liked"- how humble a wondrous fan and a grounded Pop star- to be able to walk that line with such integrity says a heap about him.
This is a good interview, but I think the best one of all by far is Bowie in the Studio and ZDTV interview of 1999, which you can also find on youtube. It is absolutely amazing -- his humor, charm, wit and intellect come through like I've never seen anyplace else. Plus the last 10 minutes show the process of how he records a song in a studio, which is fascinating.
He was a trailblazer for many worlds .His early ventures into bisexuality . Must of helped so much for many people. Bringing it into mainstream media and helping people to know who they are . Also helping families and friends of LGBTQ+ people. Was lucky to see him live in the nineties.
“Aesthetically promiscuous” is innate Neuroplasticity. “Things outside,” what’s on the outside?” The definition of never getting stuck in a rut. So brilliant. Kabuki, drag, the drag/priesthood history. To drag in every piece of information and put it into it. Process over meaning. Titled works after completion is a real giveaway. The idea of being trapped or pinned down as a writer. He was an authentic Deleuzian!
It’s enjoyable for me to see him and listen to his stories every time 😄😊! Specially when you feel he is enjoying And see things sometimes clearer than others with depth , and great sense of humor and he is reachable for ppl over all that he is hot! And have the best hair cut ever Rest on mars 💫
it's such a pity he never wrote his memoirs , I remember during the 90's news about DB planning to write his memoirs it said he even got a big amount of money in advance so that the publisher would have the rights to publish it....... sadly enough it never happened because I'm sure that it would have been one of the best !
Just read one of David's favourite books,"The divided self", by R.D Laing. Really can see why he liked it. It's all there, people creating masks, false self, a fear of one's identity being trapped , and alienation. Well worth a read.
That man was the very essence of what a genuine artist is and ought to be. And that is why, at least as far as I'm concerned, he still can amaze me and surprise me even when he has been dead for the last 4 years!
To listen to him talk , floating like a butterfly , It's the best way to start the day ,after his passing. Off to work I go , with a massive smile on my face .In the car , I think I listen to Pin ups on the way

Interviewer: "Um, yeah. So, your previous characters were very 'white,' and then you played R&B..."
No wonder Bowie went into hiding. How unfathomably boring these discussions must have been for him.
I was devastated by the interviewer's follow up question to that. It was exciting to see his eyes and expressions as the thoughts zipped through his brain. I wanted to explore his thoughts to that end... Oh well..
+MiamiPush2theLimit Exactly. So brilliant but forced to deal with such blunting, inane, pedestrian questions all day. He was so incredibly special.
You can also see from his reaction, his expression after that how alienated he felt, at least in this interview. It's a common occurrence for myself when talking to people, they just don't get what I'm talking about, very few do.

Absolute TRUE!! besides he (interrviwer) was interrupting him to make his dumb questions!!!
If David Bowie was interviewed by John Lennon and viceversa.. Than would BE a fckng GOOD interview!! of 2 ppl that understand eachother... at least 2 musicians or 2 artist
and I would say that name. the painting after finish is what Bowie did many times.
you don't control the creative process, you let the creative process take control of you...
that's how i understand what he said
That's because the person interviewing him is none other than MTV's Kurt Loder! Talk about a boring guy!
SOO talented...And SOO beautiful!
Love him.
Those eyes
@@FrootKat BOTH but THAT MAN
I've adored this man my whole life 70's 80's 90's and the rest. If I'd met him I'd have been a jibbering wreck 🇬🇧💕
Oh YES, those eyes, that hair, that nose, his mouth, that voice, his mind, his music . . I need to stop now
Ohhh MY GOOOD David am obsessed with ur eyes ugh I want the same eyes that u have
I enjoyed this interview...
I like interviews where they just talk to him rather than ask him the same old question showing on a piece of paper.
I can't believe he's dead. He was like part of the pop furniture that you just took for granted.
So sad.
Yes even though I know he’s gone I still keep half believing he’s still in a studio in New York working on something amazing.
I just adore Bowie. If people listened to him back in the day, this world would be such so much better. He spoke on everything that was taboo back in the day.
He is my favorite artist, (not just of music ,I also mean an artist of mind/existence) but hard not to see he had like the coolest hair ever
"What else have ya got?" ❤️ life, adventure and endless curiosity.
Yeah, doing his Brando The Wild One impersonation
6:32 "Most artists feel a lot happier discussing the process of what they do rather than what the hell it means"
Really interesting... it's true most artist feel a need to create, that is by definition not rational. And the whole goal of the creative process is to create something as close as possible to what you have in mind. The interesting question for the artist isn't 'why do I have this idea' but rather 'how do I create this idea'.
This is so true.
I think a smile and one word from bowie - would've made anyone feel so important, he has the most genuine way about him, I'm in awe.
I love how he doesn’t make apologies for his thoughts that might come across to some as ‘pretentious’ or lofty.
He was so well spoken, and genuine. You can tell he enjoyed just having the conversation. The Moroder story is gold, too.
David made the English look really, really good.
I’ve lived in both London and the states and generally they are good. In comparison to here lol.
Bowie is the one and only. You and I can never ever be like him. But we can struggle and try to be as good always.. and that’s a start.
Hardly any interaction with bowie apart from questions :-/ luckily David's answers are fucking awesome.
David Bowie Will Live On
My niece was born in March of 2018 and I already put David Bowie for her to listen.
this made me so happy.
I could listen to him for hours
Handsome intelligent man sorely missed.
The song fame makes much more sense after his explanation.
The indulgence of art and music rests on the graves of warriors.
No one gives a shit about this when the supermarket shelves are bare.
This was when MTV was actually about music. Great interview!
Excellent footage has been going up this past week, much appreciated, keep it up, more please!.....thank you
I miss him every day💔
He's 'not a prophet or a stoneage man, just a mortal with potential of a superman' 🌟🌟
Beautiful man
he's so beautiful
What a delicious morsel of a man. Love the way he kept it real.
Hell of a speaking voice
This is a good interview, but I think the best one of all by far is Bowie in the Studio and ZDTV interview of 1999, which you can also find on youtube. It is absolutely amazing -- his humor, charm, wit and intellect come through like I've never seen anyplace else. Plus the last 10 minutes show the process of how he records a song in a studio, which is fascinating.
Yes! My favorite interview of Bowie.
Oh man I am so sorry he is gone. God bless his soul. Wish all the best to his loved ones.
He was a trailblazer for many worlds .His early ventures into bisexuality . Must of helped so much for many people. Bringing it into mainstream media and helping people to know who they are . Also helping families and friends of LGBTQ+ people. Was lucky to see him live in the nineties.
Many of his interviews across youtube are mostly about his beginnings...yet there`s so much to be asked and answered about the era that followed.
😢 I Miss David Jones So Much 💕😭
I love his honesty and brilliance.
So beautiful he is/was
So cute when talking about being like a butterfly…just love!❤
It’s enjoyable for me to see him and listen to his stories every time 😄😊!
Specially when you feel he is enjoying
And see things sometimes clearer than others with depth , and great sense of humor and he is reachable for ppl
over all that he is hot! And have the best hair cut ever
Rest on mars 💫
needed this man for 20 more or so years
it's such a pity he never wrote his memoirs , I remember during the 90's news about DB planning to write his memoirs it said he even got a big amount of money in advance so that the publisher would have the rights to publish it....... sadly enough it never happened because I'm sure that it would have been one of the best !
Just read one of David's favourite books,"The divided self", by R.D Laing. Really can see why he liked it. It's all there, people creating masks, false self, a fear of one's identity being trapped , and alienation. Well worth a read.
This is the best interview I've seen. He's so calm and everything.
I like that the interviewer lets him ride. Gave him the floor and let him go where he wanted to do.
He did well but never acknowledged or asked him to embellish on his replies, just moved on to the next question
That man was the very essence of what a genuine artist is and ought to be. And that is why, at least as far as I'm concerned, he still can amaze me and surprise me even when he has been dead for the last 4 years!
David Bowie is always fantastic in his interviews. So clear in his language and emotions.
To listen to him talk , floating like a butterfly , It's the best way to start the day ,after his passing.
Off to work I go , with a massive smile on my face .In the car , I think I listen to Pin ups on the way
he is so divine his soul shines
Somebody up there likes You Warren
Man, that laugh when he’s starting to tell the Brian Eno story!
