  • Did you know you don't have to use cash or credit cards when you travel to India? Now foreign tourists can load foreign currency into a digital wallet when they arrive at the airport. This technology is called UPI (Unified Payment Interface) and is India's impressive instant real-time payment system.
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that facilitates inter-bank transactions. It allows users to transfer money from one bank account to another instantly and securely, without the need for the recipient's bank details like account number or IFSC code.
With UPI, users can make payments using their mobile phones, without the need for cash, credit/debit cards or net banking. UPI transactions can be initiated and completed using mobile apps provided by banks or third-party payment service providers.
UPI has become a popular mode of payment in India since its launch in 2016 and is now widely used for a variety of transactions, including peer-to-peer payments, bill payments, mobile recharges, and online shopping. The success of UPI has helped promote digital payments and financial inclusion in the country.

This service is currently available for foreign tourists at Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru airports. Right now it’s only available for citizens of G20 countries too. It looks like they're testing it before they make it more widely available. Once UPI is fully rolled out to foreigners, I'd say put a good chunk of your spending money on UPI so you can carry less cash around and avoid debit and credit card foreign transaction fees.

UPI is money transfer mechanism.. you can transfer money directly from yr bank account to other person's bank account in less than 10 seconds and you only need other person's mobile no. Or QR code. And every local to national level shop in india have QR code. And you don't need to pay and tax in translations, yes zero tax..
You can even do it offline in less than a minute without again any tax.
And UPI inicustes and direct bank account money transfer and you don't don't any digital wallet. You can literally use UPI for any kind of payment you can imagine, literally from Amazon shopping to in local market to electricity Bill's etc.
And it happens in an instant.
Also UPI have already killed cash and card system in india. We don't carry cash or card, we only need a mobile phone. That's why india is country with largest digital money transactions.

It has its own issues - network availability, servers down, transaction failure. I was in Goa and on my last day I bought few stuff for 4000 rupees and made a payment from PhonePe. The money got debited but wasn't received by the shop owner. He said I'd get it back and I had to pay again by card. I left Goa and the next day the app showed the transaction as processed. I had to call the shop owner to send me back my money. Thankfully he remembered and agreed, or else I'd have had severe headaches trying to get that money back.

    • @iamchachachoudhary
      @iamchachachoudhary 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Another issue was I was alone in a restaurant in Bangalore and I didn't carry anything except my phone. Don't tell me to carry a power bank and tell me to keep everything charged all the time. It's like telling the electric vehicle owners to carry their own source of power when doing long distances. We can carry all the extra power but there will be a scenario when these things fail. Does cash fail? No. Does card fail? Yes, but there are less issues than UPI. Does UPI fail? Yes, fails more than the card does.

Personally they are the last company I would use at any airport after they wanted a $3 commission to change a $5 bill.
Tried setting up the app from outside of India but it will only accept an Indian number.
Tourists can get indian sim cards at the airport but they expire after 3 months, wonder what happens to your balance then if you cannot get an OTP.
Word of warning for anyone visiting Ladakh with a sim card bought in Delhi .Your sim is blocked and I am guessing your access to your money is as well.
