Marvin Gaye gave a master class on timing in this performance. He builds the tension at such a pace, that by the time he sings "Free" the audience is begging for release and he gives it to them then expertly brings the performance to resolution. It's the classic arc that all storytellers aspire to: rising action, climax, falling action, resolution. And he did it in under three minutes, yet any shorter would have felt unfulfilling and any longer would have been excruciating...
nguzosmusic you are right, the way he lets the timing slide into the back seat and then back into last week, and then he somehow ends up ahead of the beat?! What is that?! He planned that. Just wow haha.
The anthem is a hard song to sing, the range is 12 octaves which is challenging. The beauty of Marvin’s version is he doesn’t conform to the anthem, but bends the anthem to him. It’s genius and allows Marvin to give this amazing rendition using his talents… amazing artistry. (I’m here again after the 2024 Home Run Anthem. Uff)
