Japan is a dying society. The people who live outside of Tokyo have a low standard of living. Americans with only a high school degree can live in a big house and drive a new truck while a college educated Japanese salary man in a mid-size industrial city makes half and lives in a closet.

"reduce the living standards" Yes. By increasing the labor pool this decreases wages. And that is just the economic argument.
