Dream Scenario is one of the best of the year. What a unique concept that's never been shown before tackling issues of cancel culture, fame, social boycott, isolation and discrimination.

Genuinely shocked it didn't get "picked up" by movie fans and taken to wider popularity. The movie has everything and it's so funny as well.

Godzilla Minus One is so good! Probably my favorite theater experience of the year with that really intense sound design and especially atomic breath. Just absolutely stunned into silence!!!
Some of my favorite underrated/under-talked-about films of the year: Influencer, Fair Play, Are You There God It's Me Margaret, Bottoms, They Cloned Tyrone, Missing, and Saw X (I'm serious).

I really enjoyed the Irish language film, “An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”-which I don’t think received the theatre distribution it deserved when it was released in Canada and the US back in March. I’m lucky enough to have an independent cinema near me, where I was able to see this beautiful, touching, and most memorable film about childhood, family, love and loss, and the effects of grief on our lives. It’s a bittersweet film that ends on a note of sadness, but also with a promise of hope, and it completely bowled me over emotionally the first time I saw it. I loved “The Quiet Girl” so much, I went back to see it three more times. I can’t remember the last time a film affected me so deeply. It should have won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film instead of losing out to “All Quiet on the Western Front” which, as good a film as it is, simply doesn’t measure up to “The Quiet Girl”. I think about this film every day.

Great picks. I'll have to catch up on the ones I haven't seen.
One I want to throw out there is technically only a 2023 release because of NYFF, but I'm counting it. Bertrand Bonello's "The Beast." A French film starring Léa Seydoux and George MacKay. Set in 2044, where emotion is a threat to artificial intelligence, humans undergo a procedure to have all emotion erased by eliminating deep-rooted connections to past lives. So, the film takes place in 1910, 2014, and 2044 as a relationship between these two people is dissected through each period.

Some here that I haven't heard of, I'll add to the list. Thanks!
Some underrated films that I feel no one really talked about:
    True Spirit
The true story about Jessica Watson who, at the age of 16, became the youngest person to sail solo around the world. But underneath it's really a celebration of nature and family.
    Linoleum
A film about dreaming big and realising what life really is about.
    Living
Based on a 1952 Japanese film, about a man coming to terms with the fact that being alive doesn't mean living.
    No One Will Save You
A sci-fi horror that really surprised me with it's constant close encounters and almost no dialog at all.
Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game
One of the most surprising films of the year for me, filmed as a mockumentary, it's funny, heartfelt, eyeopening and refreshingly honest.

I wanted to love "Beyond the Sea", but it got a little tedious. I know that is kind of the point, but I lost interest when the writers introduced "why" David wanted to stay. It is such a rote explanation. I would have liked it more if he just fell in love with being alive and free and reaching a point where, after years of giving up on life, he did not want to give that back.
That said, I need to add SO many of the movies you named to my "must-watch" list. Thank you so much for this list, Mariana. I hope you have a wonderful 2024!

Still waiting to see Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest but there should be more talk about Society of the Snow. An extraordinary film about this horrifying story, also based on a true story.

It's frustrating that a lot of movies get released later around the world, I usually don't want to see them at that point. Why is it still like that in this day and age?
My number one underrated movie, is also my number one movie of 2023, Godzilla Minus One.
Another underrated movie is Sick Of Myself.

Ahh, interesting #1. That haunted me. Hartnett says a lot in that final scene without saying anything.

There's a really charming film called "I like Movies", set in a VHS rental shop, that came out last year. Its fantastic. A witty and poignant film that's unfortunately gone under the radar of most reviewers.

I'd love to watch Dream Scenario but is not here yet. I'm adding The Five Devils to my list now. 😊
I have to disagree on Beyond the Sea, though. I really enjoyed it BUT there was a massive plot hole that I just couldn't get past.

When Evil Lurks is definitely an underrated/obscure movie but considering it's a foreign/Latin American movie I'm not surprised.
Then there's The Sound of Freedom which was phenomenal. Disturbing as hell but gripping at the same time.

I really want every to watch Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul, I went in last minute because the movie I was trying to see wasn't covered with my Regal unlimited, I was expecting a raunchy gross comedy and I was so shocked, It's a really great film and I want people to watch it. I also really want to see Dream Scenario and The Iron Claw

Excellent list, but I don't agree that Iron Claw, Godzilla and Dream Scenario are underrated. They are rated and praised high enough, even if they won't win awards.

Thank you! I include movies on lists like this that aren’t getting the viewership they deserve, so while they may be rated high by people who have seen them they are still under-appreciated from the audience size perspective.
