I bought that old luthier thumb plane in 2019. It's time to bring it back to life and send it to one person who doesn't expect it ;) I fited an old laminated plane blade to the body, and i make the wedge. It was a lot of work because the pin was a little bit skewed.. As the material for wooden parts i used jasmine wood. It cames from my friends garden, it was a big shrub with 50mm trunks. The wood looks almost like boxwood but it is not so hard. I can't find any info about it but the hardness seems to be similar to sweet cherry or better. For the finish i used blo, few coats of shellac orange and one coat of tru oil. Don't take it as a perfect restoration, i just want to allows it work again :) I hope you will like it! Thank you!
Z biegiem lat człowiek mimowolnie zaczyna czerpać satysfakcję z przywracania do życia starych klamotów. 👍🏼
Great restoration of a deserving old thumb plane. Excellent work replacing missing blade and wedge. Sometimes you just need a thumb plane and nothing else will do.
Otra obra de arte recuperada por el maestro Gakos, parece el zapato de un bebé, impresionante resultado final,un saludo cordial y por supuesto un gran like desde Narón, Galicia ( España)
I stopped at 1:07 to admire your plane cabinet. You’re going to need another cabinet! Great and inspiring work as always. I loved the curves at the end of the wedge! One suggestion, which I always make to other TH-camrs, you need a mat or rug to stand on. Standing on concrete takes its toll on your back and joints.
For a thumb plane that's really huge! I was a little worried when you made the width of the blade a close fit in the plane, since you have no lateral adjustment possibility, but with a strong camber on the blade, lateral adjustment isn't needed anyway.
Mega filmik i mega wykonanie. Pozdro i powodzenia.
The sole of the planer must also be curved in both axes and mirror polished ... Podeszwa strugarki również musi być zakrzywiona w obu osiach i wypolerowana na lustro...
Absolutely great work! My eyes are not so good. Was that a .10mm feeler gauge you used when checking the fit? If so, is that a good overall tolerance to use in most hand tool work? Thanks!
I think you needed to soak it longer in the vinegar, there was still too much rust there. Probably over a day. Citric acid works faster and doesn’t smell as much. Fun video.
What a little ripper. Stunning work as always. I’m still going through your videos so lm not sure if you answered this question but how many planes do you own and how long have you been making them.oops one more question do you still have the first plane your made thanks. Love your channel I get so much out of it
Who did you send it to in the end? (PS, as a violin maker I was particularly interested in this video. My thumb planes are made of brass, always a pleasure to use them. In David Russell's book there are some wonderful ones pictured.)
Pięknie go zrobiłeś Mati! Klin wyszedł bardzo proporcjonalnie. O ile to możliwe to podciągnąłeś poprzeczkę jeszcze wyżej - i pod względem jakości samego materiału i treści...pozdro chopie! PS. Dieta spirytusowa?
Please turn off mid roll or mid video advertising as it is very distracting from an otherwise great video. Susan Wojcicki is not paying the content creators enough to put up with these tiresome commercials. Boycott TH-cam premium apps and boycott TH-cam advertisers. Yup, it doesn't matter :) Regards!
It's hard to get over how much a luthier's plane looks like a baby's shoe.

Thanks Ron! It was Simple feeler gauge, 0,10 mm tolerance is good enough 👍
I think you needed to soak it longer in the vinegar, there was still too much rust there. Probably over a day. Citric acid works faster and doesn’t smell as much.
Fun video.
Thanks! Yup, i didn't have a time so i soakd it about 6-7 hours. Regards!
I think he got the rust... But I would have shown the neutralizing step with baking soda or ammonia. Unless that’s a trade secret :)
Awesome!
You done a beautiful job saving the plane the wood almost looks like old ivory. I would like to know about wooden ruler at 9:15 ?
Thank you! Yo can see it cleary here th-cam.com/video/EqVp1cTETMM/w-d-xo.html at 0:44. I found it in my basement after i bought the house. Reegards!
Thanks
