What a fantastic review of this Defender! Thank you! My son has one on order (the 110 X-Dynamic SE in Eiger Gray) that will arrive this June. Ironically, he came home for a short visit and I Googled Defender reviews and yours came up. Although I think he's watched every review on Defenders, he had never seen this one. As he, his mother and I watched this video, it was great that you had all positive comments to say about this vehicle. As his father, I was somewhat holding my breath that the review would be positive. Again........thank you for your well balanced review of this Defender. Our son's other vehicle is a 2023 BMW X6 and I (we) agree totally with your philosophy on the nature of high tech cutting edge vehicles in terms of there potential for issues.....most of which can be corrected through software updates. Also......it also helps to first lease and then buy if you feel satisfied at the end of that 36 month period.
I just traded my 2020 Defender 110 for a 2024 Defender P400 and, except for the costs for regular service, only have good things to say about my ownership experience. The improvements on power and tech in the 2024 are noteworthy, in my opinion.
As a UK Land Rover user for many years I’m warming to the Defender and generally agree with your review. The one thing that really did’nt come over in the piece was the truly awesome off road ability of this vehicle even with standard tyres. If you get the chance to drive one at the Landrover test centre at Eastnor in the UK grab it with both hands you will be shocked at what this vehicle will do off road and will suddenly understand what all the handles and grips are for in the interior. Thanks for a great review and look forward to more.
One of these videos put it so aptly. They said that LR had quietly been designing and tweaking the new incarnation of the Defender since 1950 (I think) and so when it came out it was a bit of a shock to the purists because all of the other changes had been made in the dark. Made sense to me.
I love this car. It looks cool, handles well and is very practical. And you can customise it a lot and have one build to your liking. However, pricing and reliability are a concern
I love the look, Sam. This, for me? Is the best size!! Give it some 17" wheel/tire combo for a thicker side wall, and an aggressive tread pattern? You've got elegance, luxury, and a very capable vehicle.
Thank you so much for illuminating me on my new beast. You know more than my salesman and just corrected some nonsense that he somehow fed me after misinterpreting what LR taught him. I feel the same way you do about the vehicle. Thank you
I love this car...ESP the automatic high beam that turns on and off on its own and the illuminated pic of the defender that lights up on the ground for extra lighting. Also, love the heated steering wheel. The only negative on this car is the leaking of the wiper fluid from both front headlights which has been fixed. So keep your eye out for that.
Good review content; very thorough. It plus my test drive helped persuade me to buy my first LR; a '25 110 with similar specs though with upgraded white cloud interior. Anxious for a January delivery.
I have the 4 cylinder and mine does the same thing. First time I heard it I thought the car was going to explode lol. I inquired at the dealership and its normal for this car. Im sure down the road they will correct. Keep an eye out for wiper fluid leaking out by front headlamps. Ive had both fixed but its a common issue with the 2024.
Just saw this channel , good details. Well done. if you had to pick between a defender 110x with I-6 motor and with msrp of 103K or a defender 110x with 5.0L v8 but with less options and only 2k more than I-6 motor ?
Ever anything made in UK is reliable? The good the bad and the ugly. It gets 2 out 3 rating for bad and the ugly for me. Rover stands for rugged off road spirit. Now its more like prom queen. An extended version would look like a SUV hearse !
You could have lead with the fact that you feel strongly about lease only. I and my wife both are buy and keep for many many years people. We take care of items and keep them... As such, if it is a lease only due to $$/repairs after 3-4 years then it isn't the right thing for us.
Most people who routinely have high-end luxury brand vehicles know that leasing is most often the best bet if you want to get out alive financially. It's a known known.
@@TestDrivenTV Thank you for your reply (quite professional) but I do not agree and haven't followed that process with several marks and have found others along the way who also bought insead of lease. Thank you for your time
Lease it because it's an unreliable vehicle? Great review, but anyone spending this kind of money and wants to own it shouldn't have to be too concerned with premature mechanical failures.
Yes, you are right ! But it is not standard equipment, you have to pay extra for the central front tow hook ☹ Also the tow hooks at the back, you have to pay extra for that too. For example, the Ineos Grenadier, has 2 tow hooks in front and 2 tow hooks in the rear as standard equipment, that is how it should be 😉
The front hook is standard. The cover is easily removed to access. I think you’re referring to the added skid plate that permanently exposes the hook. Rear hooks are included in off-road pack.
The problem is, they're unreliable under warranty, too. Having to make excuses for a vehicle that close to six figures is...inexcusable. I have a good friend and a supervisor who are both having numerous issues with their Defenders after less than a year of ownership.
I’ve owned a Defender going on two years, only problem was had to replace my battery sooner than I expected, but covered under warranty. Every time I drive it the joy I get is worth it!
We have had 6 different Land Rovers none have caused any real problems, I currently drive a Range Rover Autobiography and in the morning my wife trades in her 2015 Discovery Sport and picks up her New White with blacktop Defender 5 door 👍🏴

Wow. Who spit in your soup? Deep breath, angry little man. It’s one little search away that you cannot buy a diesel in the US. Now go do some yoga or have drink. Christ.
That one piece rear door is a big nuisance. You can't keep the door closed and roll down or lift up the window as you can in a Jeep Wrangler or Toyota 4Runner so you can't hang anything long out the rear. I find myself needing that feature almost every time I enter a Home Depot. The door also opens the wrong way. Try unloading or something in NYC without getting run over or hitting bumping into the vehicle behind you. Might work in England but not in the US. Then comes the 20 different electronic gremlins that come with owning a LR product. You're rationalizing how buying this expecting it to be reliable is not sensible. WHAT??. You can buy many many luxury vehicles , most for that matter, and expect and receive superb reliability. I've had many. Only my 3 LR Rover products constantly left me stranded. More than once and within the first 10K miles. That is NOT acceptable for any vehicle especially this LR. Regardless of whether or not you finance, or lease, doesn't matter, they aren't reliable vehicles overall and you SHOULD expect them to be at this price or any price for that matter. They also have awful resale value. However, that said, I love your reviews, but I will still rightfully "whine" when a new one fails on a trip. I LOVE that Defender even with all its many many faults. I'm about to make the leap, but waiting for a descent lease or fiancé deal. I just hope these have improved in reliability. Watch TFL, that isn't unexpected, even they thought it wasn't really that unusual for their first one to self destruct in under 200 miles. Good deals seem to only exist in every car make accept Land Rover where they give you nothing when you're trying to make a deal and they think just being gorgeous and doing nothing should seduce you into spending way more then it's actually worth. Much like dating a really hot actress that everyone wants but you know the truth and she is NO bargain. Tried that once, never works out well. All said, it is a gorgeous and seducing beauty and I am still enamored with the possibility of buying one. I guess i didn't learn my lesson after all.
Bro, your argument make no sense. Complaining about the rear door design is pointless. If you need the ability to open the rear window half-door style, get a RR or RR Sport. Or stick with your Wrangler or 4Runner. Or just get a pickup truck. It is the same door design as in the G-Wagon, with the exception that the door opens from the opposite side. I've had my 2023 Defender 110 V8 Carpathian for a year and have not experienced any issues, aside from a flat tire from running over a bolt (bad luck). Of course, this is simply my personal experience, and YMMV. You are spot on about resale values and horrible depreciation. Land Rover still has a terrible reputation for reliability, which leads to the depreciation. The same can be said of Jaguar and Maserati vehicles; the depreciation of Maserati's is the stuff of LEGEND. I've seen new Maseratis marked down 35% because they were an unsold unit from the previous year. If you can get a good deal on a lease, that's probably the way to go. I guess I will just have to see what the resale value of my Defender is after 3 years, which is about the time I get bored and move on to a new vehicle.
@@DaemonGeek I wouldn't not buy or lease based on the door design, I just know that it would have made a lot of things easier if they did a half door design being that it is a "utility " vehicle after all. It wouldn't stop me from getting one however. My Wrangler- that I just turned in after 2.5 year lease, had a residual value of 48K.A couple of years ago a high residual wouldn't have been a problem, but now after Covid things changed. My 19 Wrangler was worth at lease end 5K more then I paid. The 21 I just gave back after the lease was up was valued 8K less then the residual. The good part of all this was I was able to give it back after the lease was up, but if I had financed it I would have been really screwed and upside down. As for the Defender, it seems the only way to finance one would be to lease so you can give it back and get out. It would likely not hold enough value after 2-3 years to trade it in for anything. Oddly enough, I've looked at slightly used Defenders - as in 5-15K miles and their pricing is the same as new. What idiot would buy even slightly used for the same or slightly less. It should be about half. My local LR dealer in Hartford , CT has been pretty awful to deal with, so I might as well go to one of many others both in CT and NY, and MA, and other states where sales tax is lower and pursue a deal there. Enjoy your V8, that must be a total blast to drive.
