Have you seen the video on hemming your piece using a mitered corner? Cut your corners about 1” to 1 1/2” and roll the monks cloth in to corner. The object is to try to have the same thickness whipped around the corners as the sides. Not easy to do!
If you used Linen to punch your rug, you will not need to serge your edge. If you used Monks Cloth, you could mix one part Elmers glue to one part water together and paint the mixture on a border line drawl around the rug ( 2” is a good width) Let dry and cut extra monks cloth off. I hope that helps.
I don't have a serger. Are there other ways to preserve the edge of the monkscloth? I have Fray Check and a sewing machine to make a zigzag stitch, would that be enough?

Yes you can sew , or glue/ fuse the the monks cloth edge
