I'm almost 80 yrs. old and come from Lancashire England. These types of rugs were made by women at home out of any supplies they could Often the backing was corn or wheat sacks. The fabric used was anything that could be cut into thin strips. They lasted for years, which was the point.

Hello Vera, my Grandma was English and she had some of those rag rugs on her floor.
I never saw her make them, so I am not sure if she bought them off of a friend or made them herself when us grand kids weren't around visiting her. I can't ask her now because she has passed away, 10 years ago, unfortunately.
Would she have used a tool like in this video to make them?

Hi Vera, Im from Lancashire as well and remember doing this with my mum when i was a kid, we used rags, brings back great memories. 😀

I have taught this project to my art students. There is a punch needle rug of a cat in a chair made by a student in 1975 hanging in my classroom right now. The only amazing difference is that the side with the loops was our right side and the side you display in your video was the back side. This is my first time seeing your method as the front. It goes to show you that you can learn something new everyday. The arts are always so amazing!

I really love your type of hand motions for your punches. My favorite is using the side of the needle. ❤overall your explanation of being an artist motivates me to create a video as to why I am one also. Thanks.

As a mom of 3 I really relate to this. I started crochet a couple years ago and its been so nice to finally have a creative outlet again. You can pick up and do just a little at a time and leave out.

Crochet is brilliant in that you don't need to finish the row every time and there's usually only one stitch on the hook.

You don't understand how happy I am to come across your video. I'm a 36 year old city girl, but I feel like I should live in the mountains far away from people. I love the idea of making the things I use. I will definitely start making my own rugs now that I watched your video. I always wanted to know how they were made. Thank you so much.

Hi Rose you came up on my home screen and I am so glad. When I was young rag rugs were what I was shown how to do and have fond memories of doing it with my grandmother. Thank you for bringing back those memories and showing how different it now is. I am going searching now for one of those hooks you use. Thank you also for allowing me to see what I have and how to use it. I am a crafter of various mediums so now I can use my huge collection of tapestry wools I was thinking of getting rid of. Hugs and Loves xx
